Brad McQuaid back on the forums for an epic hit!
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 3/10/07 5:17:42 PM
I followed the game since near conception. Along the way I kept a cautious optimism as I saw what Brad was able to pull off with Everquest. Sigil has had every MMO since EQ to measure itself with and yet with all this information the game simply did not live up to the expectation(s), not of my personal beliefs, but the conceptualization that Brad himself projected. While playing the beta I was completely uninspired, the game lacked substance, meaning and purpose. My character was simply existing in a world and not really part of one. |

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes: One Month and Counting!
News Discussion « General Discussion 3/04/07 9:53:31 PM
I’m glad I had the opportunity to participate in the beta this way I had a glimpse of what the ‘vision’ was going to be. I kept a cautious optimism, however I feel Brad and his team grossly misrepresented the game. I wasn’t expecting another Everquest, yet at the same time I did have a little higher expectation from a guy that made what I felt was one of the best MMO’s to date. As far as the car and happy meal analogy, neither of these are as complex as hundreds upon thousands, lines of code, not to mention configuring hardware to software and appealing to all the different game systems consumers have. Besides, how many MMO’s have had a true polished and clean launch? |

As long as SOE can turn a profit they will leave the servers on and keep pumping out exspansions.

Originally posted by ThaleonEQ was the game in its time, but not now. Once EQ fell into the hands of SOE the glory that was an awesome MMO quickly evaporated into the hum drum of what is today's MMO uniformity, level grinding and mass raiding. Conan does look promising, but I'm not sure it will have the 'substantive' element that makes for a true 'in depth' MMO, however I am looking forward to it. That having been said you can't imagine my disappointment with Vanguard, to think this was The Great Brad that created EQ. |

The short answer is cost. Companies can be reluctant to push out new technology each and every time something new comes out. Trying to provide a wide range of technology and innovations over such a large country like the US is daunting. Money plays a big role because the cost is "always" passed along to the consumer. That’s a brief explanation, obviously there are far more details and nuances to the process from budgets, execution of plans, projects, contracts, development, planning, training and all the legal stipulations. |

Cameron is pursuing what any skeptic has been pursuing since the time of Jesus. We know form scriptures (synoptic gospels) and Jewish records that Jesus ‘was’ buried, his burial chamber was provided by Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the same Sanhedrin that sentenced Jesus to be turned over to the Romans. Members of the Sanhedrin knew where Jesus was buried as it was provided by Joseph of Arimathea, who was also assisted by Nicodemus another member of the Sanhedrin. Caiaphas along with members of the Sanhedrin commissioned that the Romans watch over the tomb to insure that no one would remove the body. Back in 2002 archaeologist discovered a burial box which was entitled James, the Brother of Jesus, naturally this was met with extreme scrutiny and skepticism. The question is, what level of scrutiny and skepticism will be leveled by the same people critiquing the archaeological discovery. I’ve seen a few posters mention that Cameron would be profiting from religion, in reality as with most Hollywood types he would be profiting off the controversy. Howard, as with any person who studied literature knows that Chretien de Troyes wrote about the fictional character Lancelot, as a collection of stories for the court of Countess Marie de Champagne. Howard knew his book was based on fiction so it wasn’t received with much criticism from the literature community as much as it was from the Religious community. Cameron at best will simply create more questions and skepticism than resolve the mystery of Jesus resurrection. |

Originally posted by DarwynFOUR I take it you didn’t have a chance to play the Beta? I’m very glad I was fortunate enough to have participated in the Beta, yet at the same time I was extraordinarily disappointed. I say with a heavy heart that Brad and Sigil misrepresented this game in their FAQ and in their “vision”. I wasn’t expecting another EQ, however I was at least expecting something with substance, genuine lore and a sense of belongingness in the world. I’m still beside myself that the Dev’s completely left out a Hook (and openly admitted it). Aside form a hook, which could mean half a dozen things to people, at least they could have made the game compelling during Beta, but it completely lacked soul, the very nature that made EQ one of the Best MMO’s out there. I had really high expectations of this game, but I remained cautiously optimistic because I wasn’t sure Bard and Company could pull off such a billing and sadly they did not. Friends of mine seem to enjoy the game, but for me it was a huge let down. I’m glad there are those that are enjoying the game, obviously their play style and emersion is very different from mine. |

After getting focused once again and managing my stress level I'm feeling 'normal' again. |

6-8 during the week, on the weekends I can get as little as five hours. There is quite a lot I want to do that I can't always do during the week.

Long story short, not having a hook in Beta really disappointed me. I never felt a sense of belongingness or felt part of the world as much as just existing in it. The graphics were impressive and for the most part the game ran pretty well for me. The crafting aspect and harvesting was pretty neat, a bit overly elaborate and at times it felt a bit tedious for its own good. There was a lot of button mashing, I played a Monk so I came to expect that, however it was pretty much the same level of button mashing with my Shaman and Drud. I preferred the original UI, I really liked the first journal that was presented in early Beta. The UI just became a WoW clone, which wasn't really a game breaker for me, but no less felt/looked way to much like WoW.
The quest were more like busy work than engaging, the lack of a decent story line or substantive lore was partly to blame. RL friends, Online Friends and my Guild Mates seemed to enjoy it, for me I expected a little more from Brad. I'm a little disillusioned from the whole experience so I don't anticipate playing it any time soon if at all. |

is Vanguard the best MMO out there?
General Discussion « Vanguard: Saga of Heroes 1/27/07 6:48:19 PM
Vanguard had the potential to be the next greatest Brad creation, however it fell short of the mark for quite a few players who were expecting a little more out of a guy who set the standards from which most MMO's are created. I wasn't expecting a rebirth of EQ, but I was hoping for something a little more compelling than what was offered.

I'm glad I had the opportunity to play the Beta. My friends (RL/Online) and 'some' of my Guild Mates seem to have liked it, perhaps my expectations were a little high considering how well Brad created EQ. I wasn't expecting a next generation EQ, however I at least wanted something a little more compelling than what was offered. First impressions can have quite an impact. I took into consideration that it was Beta, however most Beta's have some kind of hook implemented to hold players attention. This had a static, sterile world that just didn't have any substance to it.
