I am feeling so nostalgic for some reason. Probably because I read a new article full of "SWG" comparisons. I seriously miss the good old days, my old city, my old guild, my house... *Sigh* I've made myself sad now. What happened? lol. Ah well, at least when I look back I can always say I was part of something awesome. In the grand scheme of things I don't think a great deal of people got to experience the game. Not compared to the vast number of MMO players out there today.

[Preview] Origins Of Malu: You Control the World

Originally posted by Silok Definitely agree with Silok here. Who knows, maybe I'm just old school, but I find the F2P games with their micro-transaction stores to be tacky... Even if it's not pay to win I just don't like how most of them will try and wave the store in your face as often as possible. I'm a much bigger fan of paying a sub and just playing the game knowing that I have access to everything so long as I'm willing to put in whatever time and effort is required. The usual price of a subscription really isn't that much so I've never thought twice about it. |

[Preview] Origins Of Malu: You Control the World

So what I'm getting from some of these comments is that graphics that are not completely realistic are cartoony, cartoony graphics are child-like, and cartoony graphics are WoW-like... Sounds like a bunch of over simplification to me. So I'm going to do what no one has so far, I'm going to defend the graphics for the sake of the graphics instead of touting that gameplay is more important.
First off, the graphics look considerably better that WoW. Just compare the WoW screenshot in the comments to the screenshots in the article. The blood elf character is a far simpler model than the little guy with the green glowy thing in the the bottom screenshot. The terrain in the WoW shot is a bland solid texture, just compare it to the terrain of the screenshots in the article. And finally the water in the WoW shot lacks the kind of luminescence that the article screenshot has. Origins of Malu looks significantly better than WoW.
As for child-like, well I'm going to dismiss that outright. The art style has a bit of a surreal look to it in my opinion, which in my mind, does not mean child-like. (Even considering it surreal I still think I looks more real than WoW...) So yeah, it's not a graphics card killer, but why does every game have to be in order to say the graphics are good? These graphics are good, I like them, and I think they fit well. |

Ah sweet, I saw these guys at PAX and even got to speak with some of their developers. Awesome to hear even more about this faction system of theirs as well as crafting, but I'm surprised they didn't talk about combat at all. Seemed like that was what they were showing off most at PAX. They had a couple of interesting things, chargable spells and dodging. The spells were something like spells with cast timers from other games, except you could cast the spell before the timer had completed. So more time meant more power. Was confusing at first considering we didn't have much time to learn the controls. I had to play the demo twice before I understood it. Then the dodging seemed pretty cool as well. Spells would home in on your like other games, but if you dodged out of the way it would fly right past you. I also saw spells crashing into trees when I ran behind them.
Well, that's enough rambling from me for now I guess. I'm pretty excited about this one so hopefully we'll keep hearing more. This is the first major article I've actually seen for it. Wonder how long it'll take before we hear about beta. |

Yeah, I'm not sure what to think about skybuilding. It's definitely unique, could prove to fun and useful, but I'm not sure how the mechanics will actually work. It's either going to be incredibly limited in where and how you can use it, or the world will actually open and free enough you can use it anywhere. Not sure how they'd define world boundries if you could use it anywhere though.

Cool, so I'm not the only one who has heard of it, lol. Was getting worried for a second. But yeah, a good sandbox is really what I'm looking for. They seem to be pretty few and far between compared to the more wide spread themepark MMOs out there. I especially dig the idea of dynamic player factions that they had mentioned. That's what I'm really wanting to hear more about. It sounds like a crazy hard system to pull off, but if they can then it'll be that much more awesome.

So am I really the only one that's seen this one?

Has anyone heard much about a new sandbox called Origins of Malu? I saw it at PAX and it sounded like they had some interesting things in mind. The game itself had some technical difficulties when I saw it the first day, but when I saw it the second day it had some interesting fast paced combat. It was a little confusing trying to figure out how to play, but after I got the hang of it I started to like it. I went and checked out their website and around here, but there seems to be less info online than they were talking about at PAX... Anyone know anything?

What is "Coming Soon?"
Perpetual Studios Version Discussion « Star Trek Online 3/17/08 12:41:26 AM
Hmm... Well, after PE closed down I kinda stopped following STO because it all just seemed to be a mess of rumors, but of course STO decided to follow me. I came across the recent rumor control article on gamespot.com which is essientially the same kinds of rumors I've been trying to ignore, but it led me to want to swing back by here and see what's up. Still alot of rumors and day dreams, but the fact that the site is back up with "Coming Soon" has suprised me. What I thought might be dead actually still has a pulse. Anyway, I was just wondering, can anyone fill me in by telling me how long the official site has been back up with the "coming soon" tag on it? |

What Is Your 3 Most Important Gameplay Features/Mechanics
Perpetual Studios Version Discussion « Star Trek Online 1/28/08 10:23:15 PM
Ok, well I've got quite a list of things that I think would make the best Sci-Fi MMO ever. That's right, I said Sci-Fi MMO and not Star Trek MMO. That's because that's what I have always been looking for, a truely great Sci-Fi MMO. But don't get me wrong, I love Star Trek and I think this would be a great liscense for what I'm suggesting. Twitch / Skill / Aim based first person view at all times. This is for a true sense of immersion. So that you feel like you really are in the game. Even when you're on the bridge captaining the ship. Want to get a view of what's around the outside of the ship? Then I've got two words for you: "On Screen!" Full / Complete ship interiors. In my ship, I want to be able to know every inch of it. Again, this is for immersion. I don't mind having to show a little common courtesy by knocking first when it comes to someone's personal quarters though. And to go along with this, I'd like to see my crew acting normally. Meaning they can be seen walking around the ship, going about their duties, and seen in the off time just hanging out with others and such. Seamless. I'd like to see this game be as seemless as possible. Again, I speak of immersion. I don't want to see loading screens and the like. Or at least, when I'm looking at a loading screen I don't want to think of it as a loading screen. Examples: 1. If I'm in the transporter going from one location to another, then there's gonna have to be a loading screen of some type. I'd like this to maybe appear as a glowing, pulsating screen that could possibly be explained as what I'm seeing while being transported or something... 2. If for whatever reason I have to use a shuttle to travel from ship to ship, to a station, or to a planet's surface. I want to go along for the ride. Loading screens could be masked by docking or the entry into a planet's atmosphere. Both allowing the old resources to be purged and the new locations to be loaded. Though of course I could see some people not wanting to sit and wait in a shuttle just for the sake of immersion, so I would suggest a hotkey button or something that could skip that and take players directly to a loading screen and their new location. By now I'm sure you see I'm really into the whole immersion idea and honestly, that stems from how much I do love Star Trek. I've always wished I could live in such a future thanks to watching the shows and movies. So, since I can't do that I've been waiting for a game that has everything I've been talking about. If STO doesn't do this, well, I'll probably still play it just cause I love Star Trek. But I'll still be looking for a Sci-Fi MMO that can do all that I've talked about. And a few final thoughts... Skill > Gear... The gear in this game should be standard issue based mainly on a player's prefered play style. Gear based games are just designed to keep players occupied doing the same crap over and over again. It keeps them paying for the game with less worry about how quickly new content is added. And... Dynamic Game Content > Linear Quests / Missions... When the game world changes constantly through dynamic systems you're never doing the same thing twice. Someday a really great game will be released that does this in such an amazing way that the "WoW" era of games will wither and die. The key is to create dynamic systems that are fun and then successfully layer them in a very complex manner. Definately not an easy task by any means, but someday it will be done. |

Death of STO? Well, the STO we were led to believe was coming is probably already dead. But, I don't think anyone will let STO die. Meaning I don't see this as going away. Projects may die and liscenses may change hands, but eventually STO will see the light of day. I think a Star Trek MMO is inevitable. If it takes too much longer though it'll give me time to build up my resume which I can send in to whatever game studio has the liscense. I'd be more than willing to help with the programming. But let's hope it doesn't take that long, cause I still have to finish up college and get more work experience to be qualified... |
