Its a good game that i can easily see becoming a great one.  I'm not a fan of some of the things orson scott card stands for, but i'm not going to deny the fact that the dude can write a hell of a story.

I like the art style personally but i can see it being a turn-off for some people as it's stylized.  Performance wise I run at 60FPS with all the bells and whistles at full with a 3 year old machine.

the list of FPS games that i like better thaN firefall is a short list indeed.  add the RPG elements and you have a winner.

PROS:

--A variety of systems to keep you entertained, EX crafting, the storyboards, thumping and the "dungeons" as i call the dropship missions.

--A literally book-worthy story (written by someone i'm not too fond of, see cons)

--Good performance

--Fair cash shop and the availability to turn in game cash into cash shop cash

--the intangible factor of immersiveness

CONS

--not a big fan of the writer as a person

--world still needs some major expanding, this is especially noticable when you're playing thru your second battleframe

--missions still sometimes glitch (though not as often as before)

hope this helps.

I dont understand the whole pay-wall or f2p punishment, or even the "should have been p2p"...

The cheap people out there that dont want to pay a dime and support trion, you still get to play the game! don't complain about not getting AS MANY Labor points, its free! They have a subscription option... So just subscribe and you get exactly what you would have if f2p wasn't an option.

I'm really looking forward to the game, lets do something different and put some positive energy out there towards mmo's without it instantly being beaten down by nay sayers.

peace. love. be happy.

this, times roughly a million.  thanks :)

we are really getting to be spoiled little brats i9n the MMO world.  I remember back when I bought FF11, i actually had to pay 49.99 for the game before i got to play it.  I (GASP) actually had to read about the game and then, balanced that information against what my EQ1 guildies were saying.

I have no idea why people would complain about getting to play a game that cost tens of millions to make fr free even in a limited capacity.  I'm still happy they arent charging a box price.  sheesh.

and how dare the devs put in content X, **AND*** Y when all you want is X?  I mean they aRE FORCING YOU  to do "y" and... oh wait, they aren't.

seriously.  this is happening in every bloody new game that comes out.  people are drilling the damn game into the ground before the thing even releases!  EQN had people ripping it to shreds when THE CONCEPT ART got released.

THE CONCEPT ART!!!

..... better now, thanks.

at any rate i hope the people who want to play AA get a good game for a long time to play (me included there).  I hope those who don't find a game they they like enough that they can go ahead and spend their time playing it rather than engaging in the nonstop airing of grievances on the forums.

Festivus is only once a year people.

the F2P model is why the game list on this site has hundreds of blah entries instead of a couple dozen really strong ones (which would be better).

I am a WH nerd (though i prefer warmachine/hordes) and it saddens me to see a WH game be cheapened in such a way as this, but if it's a colossal failure due to crappy F2P, maybe it will be the game that makes people in control of the purse strings at game studios think about reverting to the old, tried and true method of just having everyone pay the same damn amount per month (with, naturally, discounts for multimonth subs).

remember when the only games in town were the EQs, FF11, AO, Lineage2, AC SWG EvE (in its infancy) and UO?  and they were ALL pretty good??

Me too.

the game is odd in that you have to get to max-level before the true open style of play is 100% available.

though i have met people who claim to have done their leveling through non-traditional means just because that's what appeals to them.

If you have patience you might actually find it is the game you seek.  but you need to get to 50, and then really dive deep into the game.

whether or not you agree with the way the AA folks have designed this system of "do silly leveling til 50 then the real game begins" is certainly an interesting topic and worth discussing but to just say it's dumbed down and not a sandbox makes it sound like it's staggeringly straightforward (a la WoW character progression these days) when in reality it's not.

if you're a fan of the old school MMOS though... you should remember that at the end of the long grind there is something cool to look forward to.... amirite?

Was surprised firefall didn't make it... I have seen it capture the imagination of at least one non mmo player who happened to be into halo type games as well as scifi in general.

i think they finally got it to the point where all it needs is a tweak here and an adjustment there and it'll be a long lasting and successful game.

i play it as a side-project mmo (though i try to logon once a day at the minimum for the login streak thingie) and i could see it becoming a main MMO if it got a little more depth without sacrificing the story and character progression.

hurry up & finish it guys; it sounds awesome.

as many others have said, the poll is woefully short on options.

to me:

if someone plays a f2p game as a big hunk of their weekly entertainment, and they CAN afford a few bucks to the cash shop or to a free/mium sub-like thing, but they choose not to, they might be deemed cheap or a freeloader.  I have no problem paying a few bucks if i'm getting 15 hours a week using a service and i dont know why anyone else would.  again this is for those who can afford but dont pay.

if someone can't afford a sub, and are playing a ftp game free because they cant really afford the free/mium sub or cash shop items, then that's fine with me and i hope they manage to get more money soon.

if someone pays over-the-top amounts of cash on a game (whales) then they might be better off with a subscription game that will hopefully only tap them for 15 a month.  otherwise i have no problem with them.  if they're doing it to exploit a p2w system however then not only are they asses, but the game is ass too... we are so beyond p2w!!

i think the key to FF is balancing the depth vs confusion slider as it were.

last time I played i thought there was a lot of dicking around to do just to upgrade your frame.  that's gone now but the crafting system is still complex.  which is good; you want both  rpg people and shooter people to play this game in order for it to prosper.

I hope once the kickstarted games that are currently in alpha and beta get released, they will be able to suck up a lot of the advertising space on this site (as well as the coverage, which thankfully is one thing this site does very well... cover the kickstarter funded games like CU) thereby relegating the clone games to the trash heap where they belong.

I do feel that, in spite of the bad games that this article highlights (lowlights!!),  we are about to see silver age (or, golden age 2 if you prefer; i used the comic book term) of mmos thanks to the crowdfunding bandwagon ushering in games where the programmers and producers actually interact with the owners (the backers).

and because i dont get to say this a lot, Bill I agree 100% with your article *grin*

I love this thread logic, FFA pvp games can only survive if carebears stay, but why would carebears play a FFA pvp game in the first place?

if you look through the thread you will find plenty of people who dont pvp much or at all but still play eve, a FFA PVP game.  It's a good game so people play it, and the benefits to the game of having (sort of) ffa, namely the economy being in a constant state of needing crafted goods, overrides the drawback of having a gank chance when undocked.

and again, I didnt touch pvp in eve from 2007 til i would say 2010 and didnt get ganked once during thosde 3 years.  only got pvp'd once in that time from a war target.

honestly as long as they make the patron status item (rex) available thru the AH, there's no reason to cry about it.  If you wanna spend 15, spend 15... if not and you still want the benefits, spend time in game getting plat and spend that instead.

EVE online is a true FFA Sandbox game that has been sustainable for many years... it does NOT have a "PVE base" and it's the main example as to why your premise is wrong. I'm sick of PVEer acting like the sacred overlords of MMOs. You guys just don't GET open world PVP and you should stop trying to shape every MMO out there to YOUR needs. There's plenty of carebear games.

playing eve since january 2007 and you're absolutely nuts if you think there's no PVE base in eve.

heck man, there's a PVE base of every solid PVP alliance!!  where the crap do you think the PVP ships come from?  not from the folks who log on and roam all day.

from what i hear the only players who will really need the new equipment slot are the endgame raiders.  and if you're an endgame raider in rift, you spend enough time playing the game that you should NOT feel bad about shelling out the 10 bucks or whatever to unlock the damn item slot.  if i do something for 25 hours a week for fun, then i am not going to gripe about spending a small amount of cash on it; in fact i would be happy that 25 hours of entertainment a week is only costing me 10 bucks or however much the slot's gonna cost.

as far as the slippery slope cash shop theory goes, we have to keep in mind that trion did not do this with rift when they made it free-to-play; in fact they're considered one of the better cash shop models in the industry (tera is another one).  So there isnt a precedent of this particular company creating an unfair cash shop setup.

I dont think AA is intended to play as a ftp game for the most part, though.  since you can only have property if you're subbed.  I'm guessing AA will have most of its revenue come from patron (sub) fees.

as far as the 150 alpha goes, i didnt pay it either, but since there wont be any box sales i guess you can write off the high price with the idea that the alpha / beta fees will offset the fact that there's no cost to "buy the game".  (i did buy the 50$ package)

from playing in other MMO alphas (through kickstarted projects) i can say it's fun to play a game in a pre-release setting; the devs interact with the players a lot more and you get to see the game improve... sometimes based directly off of your feedback.  I think the 150 was high to charge for this but i will say that it's worth some money for the experience, and i havent heard many of the people who paid the 150 complain about it... the majority seem to be happy with the game and their alpha experience (not all of course).

So you expect people to actually pay a subscription fee just to play a game where the goal of the game is to scam and grief people?

...

Lolz.

that is not even remotely close to "the goal of the game".  the goal of eve is whatever the player wants to achieve.  for some, the goal is to scam, but to others it's to build a financial juggernaut, for others its to kill pirates, for others still it's to build and sell space ships.  this also exists on the corp and alliance level.

it's actually exactly what makes eve WORTH that fee,

be careful with the enchanting, the more valuable the gear will be, the less pvp will happen if someone is afraid to lose it. dont make the game so much gear dependant.

well, since all gear will break eventually even just from use against mobs,  and there's no way to repair it (other than healing mounts), the game is never going to really be a "i cant lose my uber tunic" game.  unless you want it to just sit in your bank, it is eventually going to get worn out and need to be replaced.

a lot of players use their best gear to low durability farming mobs, then put the outfit away in a bag for pvp since if they're going to lose gear it might as well be low dura gear.

our clan had 3 separate 10-on-10 or larger fights in the2 hours i was online today.

also, the more popular safezone mob farms are often full of 2-4 low PP folks gaining their prow, or a vet getting their 140 (i think) freaks repeatable in.  good signs population wise.

Conman or not, he has a vision about the games he work on. If he can translate that vision in a game and polish it, he will make a lot more money than the 200k he could raise in the next 5 years as donation ...

behind every successful "idea man" there needs to be a team of very capable, motivated, and treated-fairly "implementation people".

Richard Garriott is another idea person but he is disciplined enough to know where his limits are and wise enough to get the right team around him.  Dont get me wrong, he has a larger than life character aspect as does our friend aradune, but he knows how to leverage his vision into an actual game.

Brad has the problem of thinking his ideas will propel themselves into existence by sheer force of how-awesome-the-ideas-are.  See also: vanguard.  Some of the ideas behind that game would still be visionary today- of course they never happened and the game had to be released in a 1/2 done state and we all know what happens to a game when it suffers a terrible release.

COULD brad learn from his mistakes?  sure.  DID brad learn? i duno, but i'm gonna have to see a LOT of proof before he gets any of my money, or for that matter even a lot of my attention.

the best thing about the game is its innovative payment plan; it will accept USD, Euro, Paypal, or Oxycodone

edit:  that was probably mean and harsh of me.  i'm sure a lot of people have serious pain-med issues.... my animus was directed at the guy who stole from gamers to finance his habit, not at anyone else.
