be careful with the enchanting, the more valuable the gear will be, the less pvp will happen if someone is afraid to lose it. dont make the game so much gear dependant.

well, since all gear will break eventually even just from use against mobs,  and there's no way to repair it (other than healing mounts), the game is never going to really be a "i cant lose my uber tunic" game.  unless you want it to just sit in your bank, it is eventually going to get worn out and need to be replaced.

a lot of players use their best gear to low durability farming mobs, then put the outfit away in a bag for pvp since if they're going to lose gear it might as well be low dura gear.

our clan had 3 separate 10-on-10 or larger fights in the2 hours i was online today.

also, the more popular safezone mob farms are often full of 2-4 low PP folks gaining their prow, or a vet getting their 140 (i think) freaks repeatable in.  good signs population wise.

Conman or not, he has a vision about the games he work on. If he can translate that vision in a game and polish it, he will make a lot more money than the 200k he could raise in the next 5 years as donation ...

behind every successful "idea man" there needs to be a team of very capable, motivated, and treated-fairly "implementation people".

Richard Garriott is another idea person but he is disciplined enough to know where his limits are and wise enough to get the right team around him.  Dont get me wrong, he has a larger than life character aspect as does our friend aradune, but he knows how to leverage his vision into an actual game.

Brad has the problem of thinking his ideas will propel themselves into existence by sheer force of how-awesome-the-ideas-are.  See also: vanguard.  Some of the ideas behind that game would still be visionary today- of course they never happened and the game had to be released in a 1/2 done state and we all know what happens to a game when it suffers a terrible release.

COULD brad learn from his mistakes?  sure.  DID brad learn? i duno, but i'm gonna have to see a LOT of proof before he gets any of my money, or for that matter even a lot of my attention.

the best thing about the game is its innovative payment plan; it will accept USD, Euro, Paypal, or Oxycodone

edit:  that was probably mean and harsh of me.  i'm sure a lot of people have serious pain-med issues.... my animus was directed at the guy who stole from gamers to finance his habit, not at anyone else.

no nei from the phantasy star games nor Aeris from FF7, i'm surprised... sylvanas is a good choice to represent WoW tho and I would have put FV number 1 :)  She's the icon of EQ to this day, almost 2 decades later.

Perpetuum is a lot like eve, in ways that you can discover simply by reading the forums or the official website.  so I knew I would at least find it decent since i'm such an eve fan.  But.... the community in this game has improved exponentially from the last time i tried the game a couple years ago.

everyone is optimistic due to the steam influx of players and i felt very welcomed and invited into the world by the players.

a player talked me into his corp, i joined half expecting it to be one of those omnipresent "invite anyone" corps and to want to leave instantly, but i ended up chatting and getting advice from them for hours and I am led to believe this is typical of clans in this game now.

this next part doesnt apply to me as i have an 85m SP on eve, but if you want to play a game like eve but dont want to feel 10 years behind (you are NOT 10 years behind if you start eve now but that's a different rant altogether) i would recommend picking it up from steam.

I'm happy to be able to endorse a small indie MMO and even happier to endorse 2 of them (DFUW being the other).  EA can eat it.

Da skull

Doctor Worm in perpetuum

for me it's one thing above all others in terms of features that are an abomination.

I think of the 10 or so people i met in EQ 12 years ago that i still talk to to this day, 9 of them i met through getting a group together the old fashioned way:  by communicating.

also, when GF are available somehow the overland population disappears in some MMOs.  last time i went to azeroth, i was on a high pop server but saw very few people because everyone was in a groupfinder dungeon.

For a runner-up i will go with pets and outfits that are asynchronous with the rest of the game, such as the motorcars in Archeage (which i am still looking forward to despite said cars)

if mass effect wasnt top i'd have called BS :)

might i add "dont starve" to the list as a neat setting for multiplayer sandbox MMO.  PVE, but the E *really* wants to kill you.

Brad is the type of Dev who you would hire just so he can spout ideas for more practical people to then make into actual good products.

He is also the type of guy who embezzles 45 grand from his employees and supporters.

If I had him on my MMO team, i could see him making a valuable contribution ao long as he stays away from three things:  the leadership roles, the corporate account password, and the oxies.

i got a new account and gave it a try (had played way  back in the day but wanted a new character and didnt feel like figuring out my old username)

it runs fine from steam .  IN NY i have about 100ms ping, not bad considering the game's in holand.  the reviews on steam are surprisingly good and I have found everyone in game to be polite and welcomeing as opposed to the first time i played when everyone was snarly and pessimistic.

the game is very complex and thus wont be for everyone but for what it is, it's very good.  fans of eve and people who think "i like the concept of eve but i dont want to be a space ship" would probably like it and should give it a try.

as always with sandbox type games, do yourself a favor and join a corp (guild) asap.  in sandbox games your guild is more than the sum of its parts.

Good bye

You don't know this.  Very few, If any, F2P PvE MMORPG's release active player base numbers.  We do know, for a fact, that many of them have released subscriber numbers totaling in the millions.  GW2, TERA, FFXIV, to name a few.  And there are many more.

Oh but we DO know this - none have released active player numbers - those million figures are registered accounts which is meaningless.

If those games had active # of players in the millions - they would have a LOT more servers because when you have a couple of million players daily - you'd need a shit ton of servers to handle so many concurrent users.

The fact that all of the games have shrunk or added very few servers means they don't have millions of active players.

That's how we know.

That is all speculation.  Players come and go.  These are F2P and B2P games.  Meaning players come and go.  That is why its so unpredictable.

BTW, how many servers does Eve have?

if eve servers were setup like wow servers, eve would have roughly 20 servers.

last time i went back to wow, there was only one real means of leveling: the dungeon finder.

only time you saw people walking around past level 20ish was folks gathering craftables.

Good bye

Athough I know that AA is not a full-fledged Sandbox, I still dont understand why every sandbox game that has come out recently has no option for a PVE only world.

the "It's our game" and "We finally get a PVP game" quotes are annoying especially considering that there are MANY "care-bears" (me included) who are dying for a sandbox game that will cater to the PVE crowd without forcing PVP down out throats.

If I wanted to PVP, I'd go play Battlefield with all the 13 year olds on an XBOX....

in some games, the economy needs for there to be PVP... there needs to be a way that "stuff breaks" so that there's constant need for more stuff for the crafters to make... otherwise everything becomes devoid of value.  Again I dont play AA yet because i didnt pay the 150, but maybe the way the game's economy functions requires pvp.  Something like an item decay system would be a decent workaround for a pve version but maybe not.

Good bye

there's a very successful MMO that has been running for a decade where all the good crafting loots are in the part of the world where there is open PVP.  People who like the risk go in and collect the materials then sell them for a profit in safer areas... people who dont want to leave the safer areas simply buy them from the market.

now I'm not in alpha (i bought the 50$ pack) so I dont know whether the markets in AA allow this.  but if they do then the game will be absolutely fine for not only pve and pvp people, but also folks like me who like both.

to be honest the game is good enough to warrant having a decent player base.

it aint perfect but neither is any other game.  It probably contributed quite a bit to the "mmo do not have to have boring combat" movement which is a good thing.  I am happy to have it on my system and play it now and then... maybe will play it a lil more while i take that eve cooldown that all eve players need every few months :)

You're just not using the english language properly.

Not even closEST.

It's easily one the closest games to EvE.  Not to mention the pvp in Darkfall is 100x better.  Don't get me wrong.  EvE is a great game but I just think DF is much better.

when DF implements its alignment system (assuming it's good) and deepens crafting a lot, then, to me it will be as good as eve.its not there yet... eve is one hell of a game.

however, (and i was there!!) DF at age 1 and a half is way ahead of where eve was at age 1 and a half

any tool or feature of a game that gives the player the ability to generate content is a sandbox element of that game.  A system that the devs put in place to allow this is akin to filling the sandbox with sand (and shovels, etc).  Eve's and Archeage's political structures add sand to the sandbox so to speak.  Poitical structures allow the players to generate content (in this case, political shenanigans and drama.. yay!!)  Rift's dimensions and their Build-your-own-class are also elements that are "sandy" although Rift is not as full of make-your-own content as, say, Eve.

a game can have any number of sandbox elements.  The argument of whether or not a game is a sandbox is absurd because there is no upper limit to how much freedom to generate content, other than just letting the player design his or her own MMO.  Even Eve has limitations on its rules; you can't craft a gate that allows a titan to bass through to high sec, you can't attack or steal while docked, etc.  Even something like second life has its limitations.

people have begun using "sandbox" to  mean "different from WoW" or to mean "that thing I like," or offasionally "the PVP system I like".

it means none of those things.

Do a lot of games with abundant sandbox elements have meaningful PVP (meaning you can lose items or territory in game due to PVP)?  Sure!  Does every "sandboxy game" need to have meaningful PVP?  Nope!  ATITD and Landmark look em up. neither have pvp at all (Landmark will eventually have pvp enabled servers, I think)

TLDR: please refrain from using the words sandbox and themepark so arbitrarily that they begin to lose meaning.

and if you enjoy the alpha of archeage great!  I will see you when they let the 50$ founders in!

Da Skull

if you are into customization of your character's skills, and more traditional mmo combat, rift.

if you are into action style combat and anime is your thing, tera.

i got the cheapest of the founders packs.. the 50 dollar one... and trying to keep the willpower not to upgrade it to the one that lets u play alpha heh.

its looking better and better.

I loved my time in WoW but when they essentially took away customization with the removal of the talent trees (they needed to expand, not slash those) they took me away too.

Even in my themeparks i need to be able to customize my character and to me the more theorycrafting, the better.

i wouldnt even put WoW in the top 3 themeparks anymore, especially since Wildstar feels so polished after only a month.  I'd play Wildstar, rift, or EQ2 over WoW for a themepark experience.
