Really happy about this, strongly anticipating the last 2 class info for TOR on Dec 3rd.

I agree with the list, however I would also argue that this list be revised in about a year, as new MMOs that come out may knock a few down. Especially with games like GW2, TOR, STO, etc coming

As far as they go I agree with all the choices with few exception.  Those being Club Penguin and Maple Story, however that said I understand the reasoning for putting them on the list.

Guild Wars and LotRO focused heavily on good story telling, although people may disagree with their mechanics (I know I wasn't fond of LotRO's) they are both really well put together games, with excellent storyline, lots of play.  Both are stable games as well, with few flaws and a thriving players community.  That isn't to say they don't have their flaws, all games do (even WoW); but the positives of these games really out way the negatives.  Heck Vanguard had a really rough start, but has recovered quite nicely in more recent months.

Like I said I would like to see this list redone every year now, to see how things grow and change.

Guild Wars has always tried to expand on the concept of combining RTS values into an MMO world.  In fact that was much of the concept behind the OGW.  Where henchman take the place of other party member, but where strategic elements like limited spell hotbars, character position, secondary class, etc all combine into how the game is played.  This was evolved by nightfall and the addition of heros and the ability to flag heros and henchmans position for best strategic value.

In fact part of the reason for ArenaNet's existence is due to the fact that Mike O'Brien and Patrick Wyatt didn't like the lack of RTS elements in the development of WoW.

I like to hear that GW2 wants to keep that tradition alive by allowing massive WvW battles to be more like an RTS.  This is a form of PvP I think I could really get into, I like the idea, love the concept and really hope they can pull it off well.

I would adore a good vampire MMO.  Although make it a bit of a fight between vampires, lycans, and other evils.  Nothing buffy like, but something more  like Hellsing or Underworld.

Interesting, looks like I will be playing a tactical commander aboard a cruiser class ship.  This will give me high damage taking capabilities but also the ability push with a bit more high damage weapon capability.

Really like the third one, with what looks to be some sort of science vessel... However this game is third on my personal hype list, more excited for TOR.

In regards to the article:

Yes, absolutely right.  Anytime I go into an MMO I hear WoW this and WoW that, it is a turn off.  It automatically makes me think the person talking about has a limited perspective, that all they can relate to is WoW.  And more often then not I end up with the reply, "This isn't WoW," or "If you want WoW go play WoW!"  It infuriates me that some people have such a limited perspective on games that they can't relate to any other game with out their WoW Crutch.

Each game is different, yes there will be parallels between different games, but that's true of all games.  But each game is designed to be unique, and games that purely throw themselves at competing with WoW don't do well.  The game needs to be true to itself, when it is it can be the best game it can be.  And if it is the best game it can be then it can succeed, not because it relates to WoW, but because it is a great game.

I went to the dentist the other day. They cleaned my teeth and then offered a variety of extra services. I think if the extra services aren't part of the core game (ie, removing details and then selling then to you later) then I'm all for it.

Kind of like how SoE is doing it? I agree that it is a great idea but SoE has been flamed a critsized for doing this.

Yea and I think if they do it that way it will be great.  Either following the SoE trend of extra fluff stuff being what is available in the game store, or following the GW model for it as well.  Either of those MT based systems I think would work fine with in the TOR system.  However, if they follow a more Asian market strategy, where you have to have the MT stuff to be able to play, then I think that is bad.  'Yes you can be a Jedi, but to get a lightsaber you have to pay $20, no get a starship you have to pay $40, etc' I think that is a bad system.

I don't mind the MTs as long as I am not forced to invest in them in order to play.

Yea signed up for beta a while ago.  I am very interested in seeing how the game pulls together, as it seems to draw on a wide variety of concepts not standard to the MMO industry.

I think they are just trying to emphasize the fact that a big open 'beta test' is still a loooong way off.

They are allowing us to sign up for testing now, but they want people to know that there won't be any testing right away for the vast majority of us.

Yea, I think they are simply making the distinction that is going to be very focused.  Like they will probably have every one test one class one session, and another class another session.  They may also consider the game pre-beta still so this would be more like alpha testing, which some games do do drafting for.  I am still excited about this and either way I am going to try and do the best thing I can.

It'll "be back up in the next few hours." ... sure... It'll prob be down all night. ROFL, just that much demand.

Rumor's also afloat about 2 of the games on your list and them being expanded upon into a trilogy.  NCSoft has supposedly begun working on Lineage 3, while I can't find an accurate source that can confirm or deny this I think it is highly plausible.  Likewise, supposedly EverQuest 3 is in development behind closed doors somewhere, however I much doubt this one as it took them this long just to get GH in EQ2, which were advertised as coming soon on the original release box *cough*

I would have ranked the anticipation for GW2 up a little more, but then again with the inclusion of GWF and GWNF does it more make it the 4th game in the series then the second?

All in all it was a pretty good list.

Damnit, now I'm having second thoughts. : /

Good! You're right guys...it's not worth it. Why ruin it now? Wait it out, give it a few months...don't ruin it for yourselves :P

Oh yeah...and STAY OFF THE SITE!!! Those of us DYING to test it are trying to get in still ;)

Yea I am def testing it.  I want this game to be the best it can be, and to do that I need to smash, blast, and beat the heck out of it.  That way they know what still needs worked on, like server capacity :p and so they can fix it, make it better, so those problems aren't there at launch.

It sounds like this going to be really focused testing, probably having it set up for certain classes areas to be worked on.  I don't think it's going to be the type of beta that we pick and choose what to test, I think they are really going to have a lot of control over the testing.  I think that's part of why they are going to be cycling through player each test session.  So if you want to save the story, best bet is don't sign up for test till they get out of the early stuff, sign up as late beta tester.

To be honest I think the game is more complete then they let on. The slow release of information is probably a better strategy in my opinion.

Very much so, that's why they keep a pretty standard flow of how and when info is released.

No, it actually scans the pc you use.

That's not good for me, my 8800GTX was sent off to get a new one.  It went bad and so BFG was replacing it.  Right now I have a crappy 8600GT in its place.  I have a dxdiag from a few weeks back but I guess it will scan with my crappy card in.

Well beta isn't going to start in the next week, wait till your new card comes back before signing up. I it will probably be a good couple months before they start actual testing and the chance of getting in first round draft is slim, so just be patient and sign up when your comp is back up to full.

That said, I ran across this in their FAQ.  I think this is their answer to trying to get everyone that wants to test in to testing.  You test a session, and then other people test another session.  This is from their FAQs:

When each testing session ends, will the chosen players be able to test again?

Our approach is to have new testers for each testing session. That said, players who give excellent feedback or find and report good bugs may be considered for additional testing sessions.

Does it require a dxdiag?  Because I'm at work and not on my gaming pc.

No they aren't using that, they are using an active file scan system from their end, java based.  I know stuck at work too, luckily I can access my comp via a gateway :p

Looks like I'll be running home for lunch.  Hopefully the site is up by then.

It's really messed up right now.  It's giving my a site unavailable message, but still letting me see half the thread in a really distorted look, I can click reply, but can't type anything...  so IDK they may not even realize there is a problem if some people can still get in and post.

Not the site itself, the beta tester system scan portion.  When I got to that, was told the browser was incompatible.  Had to flip over to IE, which I never use.

Ran fine in FF3.5 for me.

What min sys requirements do you think they will take? I have a duo core 1.8 4 gigs of ram, buy an ati raedon 1950 card :(

They have said that that is part of what they are testing, to determine min system requirements.  The beta signup scans ur computer, and they are looking for people from all walks and experiences.  But sys reqs will be determined via beta, not before.

FYI right now the site is bouncing up and down.  I suggesting waiting for a few hrs before attempting sign up to let them work out the issues they are currently having.

ye, corpg? show me 1 place where those words are written or said. wtf does corpg even mean? is it diminishing the size impression of the word massive? no one not even anet has ever called GW anything other than an MMORPG.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guild_Wars

Competitive Online Role-Playing Game.  Sort of a sub-genre of MMO, and how GW was originally marketed.
