Both collision detection and rubberbanding are not as intended in this video.  The devs have stated that the server was not optimal and the netcode has not been optimized.  They've talked about collision detecction before and what was in the videos was not what was discussed.  I'm assuming it's going to be fixed, but haven't had dev support on that one yet.  Remember, those videos are from the Alpha / Internal Beta stage, so ALOT will change.

And as for this game not "WoW'ing you...I'm glad.  If I wanted to be WoW'd, I'd play WoW.  Or even LOTRO, or Vanguard.  This game is much much diffferent, more mature (as in mature content, but hopefully as in mature playerbase), and much less high-fantasy, and a much different combat system.  I'm looking forward to this game pushing the envelope in some aspects that are considered 'standard' to MMOs.

I guess I really don't understand all of the DDO hate here.  IMO there are aspects of this game that are the best in any game at this point.  Also, the developers are creating new content constantly and are very active in communicating with the community.  I'm not saying that the game doesn't have any problems but every MMORPG that I ever played has problems.

This game is 100% better now than it was at the start.  I'm really interested in the opinions of people that have tried the game out in the last 3 months or so.  What is your opinion?

As a founder and a community advisor (no longer active), I can say that the only real standout problem I have with DDO is that it is static.  I feel like candyland has more variety in gameplay than DDO.  Almost everything else, I enjoy or appreciate as a valuable contribution to the MMO industry.

It's just a shame that I realize variety and the random element of an MMO is what makes it worth playing.  For instance, one of the most memorable moments in DDO where when I ran into another group within a dungeon.  I thought it was the coolest thing ever, then I found out it was a bug.  A few days later it was patched :(

I started lotro at the first stage of beta(so i've had a few months of experience with the game) I agree with some of the op's opinions and disagree with others. I'll just throw out points as they come to me.

The graphic engine is very nice, impressive graphics without needing a $2000 rig to play. Easily played with highest settings, was even able to play on my laptop on the very lowest settings(my laptop isnt really for gaming)

Classes and combat: Not a whole lotta classes and what classes there are very generic. I've played every one to max level and i never got a real feel for any of them. Imo there wasnt that much difference between the classes(which makes it easier for the devs to balance) Minstral was fun to play, burgler was ok, was able to both solo and group to max level

World size: This is my biggest problem and its funny i hadnt really realized it till they put the queue system in. The servers are going to be very small based on the world map. So if this game has any sucess be prepared to be waiting to get into the game(wow players may be used to this and accept it. Personally i will not pay to play a game where i have to wait an hour or so to get in, reason i quit wow 10 days in)

Crafting: To an old Swg crafter its a joke, but i guess on par with Wow's crafting(didnt get too into wow's crafting but from my small experience it was very similar)

Quests: Some were your typical kill x and collect x number of x, but other quests were very well writen and engaging.

The game will be alot of fun for some people (the lore is rich) but imo not a game that will hold most peoples interest for too long. They could probably improve the game vastly by simple doubling the size of the map, leaving the content alone. There arent many places you can go and explore on your own. Expect players all around at all times.

Flame my opinions if you will, but i've played alot longer than most of you. For a while i was addicted to the game, but it wore off pretty fast.

As another beta 1 (alpha 2) player, I have to agree with your post.  You have captured what I feel about the game without being biased.  It's a solid game.  To me, it doesn't offer anything new or different than, say, WoW.  But it should be successful as alot of MMOers became MMOers with WoW and are looking to move on after a couple years playing WoW.  LOTRO will be easy to transition to, and offers alot of the people that want to get away from the immature crowd (hopefully) a place of refuge.

That said, I feel like the game is a little too bland, and doesn't push the envelope in any direction.  For me, it's a small step to the side when I was looking for a big step forward.

Nonetheless, you all can argue over whether or not the OP did what he says he did at lvl 6.   Truth is, the gameworld is small.  Maybe not the smallest in all MMOs, but small compared to how VAST Tolkien's works make the world out to be.  I mean, there were whole chapters (and long chunks of movie for the moviegoers) about the hobbits' travels from one area to another.  Enough to make stories about and have memorable scenes.  In the game, those journeys have been reduced to a couple skirmishes, in a super-saturated MMO world.

If it were my call, I wouldn't change the content, # of enemies, or anything else, I would just scale the world up 150-200% at least.  LOTR was epic in part because it was huge.  I definitely feel like they missed that little tidbit when creating this game.

I'm not sure you guys were around before DnL launched...They promised SO much.  The game was supposed to be innovative on many fronts, much like Darkfall sounds.  DnL was created by a no-name company, much like Darkfall.  DnL released amazing videos (riding a dragon high above the earth through clouds) much like Darkfall just released a video of great gameplay footage.

The vaporware feeling comes off of not having a big company backing the product.  Not having a set release date, and having many many more unknowns about the game than knowns.

true, graphics are not AoC level, but they were aiming for low poly count (or so i heard) so thats what you get. But who honestly cares? Darkfall offers so much more than any other mmorpg in the near future. Graphics only take you so far.

Problem is, many many games promise a ton of new and different things and the closer to release you get, the more reality sets in and how they cut out all the cool extra stuff and how you are left with a game very similar to the rest out there.

I have yet to see a game live up to all the crap they make up pre-beta, and all the trailer footage they show pre-beta.  IF this game delivered on what they are advertising in things like that video, THEN I'll go buy the game.

Well to be honest I live out in Steamboat Island area in Olympia, WA which is out in the boonies.  The nearest cable connection is 700 feet from my house + all wires to my house are in the ground.  No dsl available, lines are too old and I usually connect at 32kbs with earthlink.    Satelite cost like 400 bucks for a dish and like 60 a month.

Ok just making sure you were aware of satellite internet.  To say 'no service is available in your area' is not true.  It just isn't within your price range I guess.  I don't blame you, it is a bit expensive.

Also, what general area do you live?  There are some service providers that cover large areas that are often overlooked.

I agree with the other poster in that I would not pay a monthly fee for a game with a modem.  In fact, I would probably stick to the old CS or old NWN and that's it.  Oh or diablo 2.

I don't think he's trying to make a point.  He's just discussing how some guilds (alot of guilds actually) approach guilding for reasons that can clash with the casual gamer.

I've seen many good, relaxed guilds turn to crap when they've tried to 'step it up' and become like the hardcore, hardworking, acheivement-based guilds.

To each their own I guess...I guess Jon just feels like the hardcore guilds don't realize that not everyone wants to be in the uber respected cool kids club.

Not sure what the point is Jon.   Of course there are different types of guilds for different sorts of players.  You prefer casual guilds, I've had some good times in them as well, but of course, there are guilds formed that have more structured goals and purposes.

Marvel Online has the potential to excel where CoX had all it's shortcomings (signature powers, great game lore, content, stuff to do outside of fight ie secret identities).  That, on top of at LEAST a year's wait before it could be released, makes it a great game to act as almost a sequel to CoX, just as CoX is going completely dead.

Let me first state that I do not like WoW; I played it for a few months then quit, like almost 2 years ago.

That said, I would not change a thing about WoW.  It has 8mil subscribers.  It is by far, the best MMO out there.  Simply because I don't like it, and you don't like it, doesn't make it a bad game, or with any flaws.  If there was a single game in the universe that everyone liked, we would all be playing it constantly.  Chess?  No, too nerdy for some.  Checkers?  Too simple for the chess players.  TicTacToe? Nah.  WoW is a complete, great game....one that I happen to not enjoy.  But I would be crazy to try and 'fix' the game to match my tastes.  That would most likely piss off the 8 million subscribers that still enjoy the game the way it is.

You must have not been playing many games if you think your system can run 'any game on at least medium settings' if it's 2 years old.  Have you touched SWG, GRAW, Rainbow 6 Vegas?  Off the top of my head, those 3 games on mid settings could take an older system to their knees at 1 fps.  Vanguard is in the same boat with them, except Vanguard is still in beta.

I'm not saying Vanguard isnt a system hog, which it is, or a great game, since I dont want to play it after trying the open beta, but you are living in a fantasy world w/ that kind of a statement.

This whole article was retarded....first, this website, and the games he's referring to, are called MMORPG, ROLE PLAYING GAMES.  People in MMOs SHOULD roleplay, thats what the games are there for.  I could go on, but really, I don't need to.

And why should games need to encourage roleplaying?  It's player-driven.  I mean, we all log in to a fantasy world to do things.  Some people chose to embrace the alternate reality and roleplay, others chose to log in and kill things.  I think the games are fine how they are, and just wish everyone would leave everyone else to play the way they enjoy as long as it doesn't hinder others from doing what they want directly.
