As for the original topic. I agree asian games tend to be grindy and slower pace. Also many times the quests are mean.. AA actually does have a few decently written questlines though.

However most western MMOs come with an i win button these days. They are easy, fast and never dangle any carrots over your head instead they force feed you from a trough of  glittery rewards that leave you feeling like you have accomplished nothing after playing.

Goboy it's obvious you haven't played archeage.. Your cliché examples just don't apply

You guys all crack me up.. Most people that are following it are most likely people like myself. I come back every now and then to see what's changed. At this moment the concept is appealing but there is not enough meat to get hyped over anything.

as for the comments about games matching up to EQ. Well not even EQ matches up to EQ these days if you read what everyone says about it.  I was a classic EQ player from beta up to 2004. im afraid of going back to that most cherished game. I enjoy my rose colored glass memories.

You do realize that these are RPG and throughout RPG history actions have been determined by the roll of a die.
It definitely has its ups and downs.  The biggest ace this game has is that the PvP does help to build community within guild if your in a good guild as I am it can bring some fun times.

not current, but EQ1, EQ2 and Vanguard. Its funny how the group oriented games seem to promote friendly communities. City of Heroes also deserves a mention here.. had a very friendly community.

Most games are so solo oriented these days. People are out for themselves. Half the time it feels like your running around with bots. Even in groups. I have dubbed groups these days as hit and run groups. They don't say hi, they don't say bye. They just group kill a few things they need and move on by hitting disband.

So I typed up the original earlier from my IPAD.. I just went back and made ALOT of editing and changes.. but ya  The outlook is the same. The game has the potential for some fun times. However they could have done so much better with so many things.

Also the UI is really missing some really basic standards in MMO fair. examples no inverted mouse look, No guild MOTDs. No in game voice clients. it also seems a bit clunky for a lot of people. I have 1 friend give up due to constantly being kicked. I really didn't want to to get into a lot of the negtives that you see so many times like bots and hackers, and mega inflation due to them. I wanted to talk about my overall game experience.

Ohh the game runs pretty smoothly for me, and I run over a Verizon wireless MIFI. on an ASUS gaming laptop. the friend that left due to being dropped has a computer that will run circles around mine. His is brand new. mine is 2 years old... just a few more points. so there you go.

Greetings all. I figured I would chime in and give my opinion on AA after a month of Patron Status Play. I wanted to point out some of the good and the bad with this review. So grab up a chair, and I hope you enjoy, or at least find something usefull.

To start out let me tell you a bit about me and what I look for in a game. To start I enjoy PVP and PVE, I have to be honest though and admit, that I find myself PVEing more than I do PVP. I enjoy participating in group oriented gameplay and especially raids. However I am fairly casual in my gaming habits. I work 70 hours a week. Normally in games crafting would be a way for me to kill small bits of downtime. In this game however crafting can definitely be a grind and takes a lot of time if you want to get anywhere with it.

So I will start with Crafting/harvesting.  Starting off crafting in this game can be very useful right up front (well at level 20 anyway) I started off trying to skill up in both weaponsmithing and Armorcrafting (Plate). However It didn't take me very long to realize how insanely expensive it was going to be do this. I ended up dropping weaponsmithing for plate armorcrafting. (even that is expensive on its own.) Mats just cost a fortune, making it hard to keep up. Armor smithing thru the 20s is great and easy with what you are making actually being useful. Then the 30s and 40s I almost found it useless (but still expensive) since dungeon armors are better than crafted armors. Then finally top tier armor is good. However good luck getting there.

Tiere is so much more they could have done to help Crafters, like  maybe instilling something along the lines that Vanguard had where you could craft work orders to level up, then  sell those work orders  to vendors. Something Along the lines of trade runs, but just using crafted items instead. No one is willing to spend any in game gold for lower tier crafted items, so its use it or its wasted.

This leads me to another point in Crafting. AA is a game that has the claim that Crafted gear is the best gear you can get in the game at the high end. I think this is the wrong way to do things in a fantasy game....PERIOD... sandbox or not. I am of the opinion that crafters should work hand in hand with adventurers and their  dropped items from raids and events. Offering different ways of improving those itemsOr repairing item damage, not competing with those items. As I said above I enjoy my PVE. I want there to actually  be a point to it at the top end. I want that dragon to drop uber gear. let me then  take that gear to master crafters to make it  even better, or possibly even change the weapon type or maybe what stats it effect. I mean whats the point of taking the risk to raid if the reward is worse than what you can just pay a crafter to make, or make yourself.

Ok on to PVE. The mobs in the game are fairly dumb. BAF radius in most areas are miniscule making outdoor adventuring dull and lifeless. There are some decent dungeon battles  though, however nothing groundbreaking or new. Open World raid mobs tend to be a zerg fest from the lack of healer support, or even true tank support. This is due to the very poorly designed healing abilities. Healing is mana inneficient, they take to long to cast, and have have long recharge timers , and until you get to the high end of the game healers don't heal for very much. They really need to make more adjustments and buff up healing. As for Tanks.. They get better at high levels. But agro management can be a pain with long cooldowns on taunts and agro builders. This is especially true due to the fact that 95% of the players are playing DPSers, and most  only seem to know how to Zerg. I play a paladin (occasionally switching to abolisher) So I am experienced in both the tanking and healing department,

This takes me to PVP, which is where the game does seem to shine. PVP can actually be a lot of fun at times, it also spices up some of the bland open world PVE. I do feel however that there are quite a lot of imbalances that need to be worked out. Stealth is a bit to powerful, and Stunlock, and  CC effects are a bit over abundant, which can be very annoying. I get my PVP in Spurts, as  I am not a PKer, However I will attack Reds when I see them or (Purple/grey).. As a Paladin as my main build honor  points can be hard to come by. Fully dedicated healers get screwed even more on this.  This also needs to be adjusted. I also feel  the justice system needs to have harsher penalties (longer jail times) for friendly PKers. Making the decision to grief other same faction players  hurt a bit more.

Ok class design. While fun. The cookie cutter builds are starting to rear their ugly heads. DPS is king in this game, which is unfortunate.  I also dislike the skill rank system. Which you have no control over how they rank. I mean seriously with all the hoorah about designing your class. you cant even choose how to rank up the skills associated with that class. it makes no sense and seems like a huge oversite in overall leveling mechanics.

Things I have not done much of, are  trade runs. Just don't have time for it. I have however escorted some friends on theirs. And land ownage. lets face it. Its hard to get.. even though land is starting to open up on my server. As it stands right now. I don't know if I am going to even bother. I already have a lot on my plate when I get the chance to play. Owning land is just going to be more things to do I don't have time for.

OVERALL. The game is fun, but grindy. As a casual player it took me about the full month to make it to the top level. That doesn't put me in the high end of the game by a longshot.  PVE needs a huge  shot in the arm. I was hoping for open world dungeons Akin to Vanguard or EQ. Unfortunately I got uninspired instances. So much for fully open world. As I stated above. I enjoy the fact there are Open World raid mobs to take down. Its a shame as the game progresses  that most likely no one will be doing them for 2 reasons. 1. The  lack of healers and 2.  the fact whats the point when better gear is to be had from crafting. PVP is definitely the highest point of this game. Especially if you like being a stealthed range weapon wielding DPSer. Unfortunately Tanks and healers while present are underwhelming and waste their skill points on skills that do nearly nothing for them in PVP.

Do I think I will stay with this game for the longhaul? Its to soon to tell. I am interested in seeing what changes may be made to it. However. I know when EQN comes out I will be there to try it out. As it stands right now. Its keeping my interest somewhat. However it has left me feeling fairly disappointed on several fronts where I felt a game of its design should have shined it fell kind of flat.

A lot of SOE hating going on... For me they have  been behind  of my top 3 favorite games of all time. Eq1 and vanguard...

they have made some mistakes sure. But I don't see them as evil in anyway.

Is it as challenging as eq1 was for PVE content? Or is it another solo oriented game? Obviously there will be benifits for grouping for WvW. Which i would partake in if  I played. But how is the PVE? Are the group dynamics good. I am tired of solo games disguised as MMOs.

Also what's this game going to cost at launch there is no way I'm going to spend over 100.00 for a game that in 3 months will most likely be FTP.

I would say age of Conan.  Great story, great setting, fun combat. And some great depth in character development.

Want a New EQ?

From what you described, no.

I would much rather take a ARPG with a non-fantasy theme.

I highly doubt any devs will put significant down-time into games anymore. And if that do .. well ... i am glad that i have other choices.

Then please by all means go find you an ARPG fansite, this is a site for MMORPGs.

I am sure you want games that also that cater to solo player. There are plenty of solo player games out there as well.

Want a New EQ?

Make mobs harder. and more challenging. Which will encourage grouping.  Make a large majority of the world like this. Sure have a few solo oriented areas, make them give jack crap for xp and loot though.

Give a little downtime in between fights. Not to the level that EQ was at. But give people a chance to breath and actually talk to one another. Don't want to make it chat.. then modernize it with voice client.

Get rid of Instancing, UNLESS its to tell stories (ALA GW2 or Age of Conan Style) make the world Open world, and yes that means dungeons to.

Have it where mobs will chace you for long distances.. Some more than others. Trains anyone?

Cut down on the chores. Have some quests. but make them actually mean something. and make their rewards less about XP and more about the story an the final item.

Have dynamic lighting and shadows, ohh ya and dynamic darkness as well.

Make it Open world. Not this guide me by the rails experience we get now. Let the players go out and make their own adventures. Once again less quests does not mean no quests, but don't make them guide you around the game world.

THrow different level encounters throughout the world. Stop being so organized. have the players looking over their shoulders in case a level 40 sand giant shows up in a  mainly level 13 area that will step on the players.

Death Penalty as severe as EQ1 at launch? no tone it down some.. not a lot, just some.

There.. That's whats needed, and all the people saying it wouldn't work. Well they are wrong. However the gameplay has to be smooth. It cant be bug ridden.

Vanguard had a lot of these. and its looked upon fondly by many of the old EQ1 crowd. If it hadn't been so damn buggy at launch it might have had a chance to be one of the greats.

thanks all. I unlocked my Herald of Xotle, but I am thinking of rolling a conqueror or Dark Templar for a tankish type character.. not sure which one I wan to go with.

So over the last few years many of my friends have started MMOs less and less. This includes me. I toy around with GW2 every now and then but, my play time with that is really low anymore. as most of my friends lost interest months ago. Or didn't care for it  to begin with.

Well its been years since I played Age of Conan but I remember really enjoying my Herald of Xotle there, so I started talking to some friends and about 4 of us are going to go back to it. One has never played so we are all going to start over. Even though I know I will toy around with my Herald because I remember how awesome a class I used to think he was. I think I made it to around level 70 before.

So update looks really good how is the community these days? I am thinking maybe if we all get back into it, maybe it will re ignite the interest of gaming again!

I am still waiting for a time machine so I can go back in time and play everquest 1 at the beginning again.
Even though I have no interest in this game whatsoever. That is awesome news for the community.  Hopefully they don't ban innocent people by mistake.

Well, it all depends upon what you expect out of a zombie apocalypse game. You mentioned you will wait for a real zombie MMO, but you're not going to get a real one from SOE. If you're just looking for another adventure game similar to EQ, but with a zombie theme, then I'm sure that's what you'll get. And, maybe you're the type that will enjoy that.

But if you're looking for a more realistic survival game, based upon a military simulator like Arma 2, where your actions have real benefits and consequences, where you are truly competing with other players, and where you can craft and construct custom buildings any way you like, you're going to be greatly disappointed with SOE's zombie game.

Well I for one can personally attest to the fact that SOE has put out a multitude of different types of games with different types of play styles, so to sit here and claim it's from SOE, and that they can't, or will not make a survival based game that is more realistic is a bit far fetched. Especially when that exactly what they stated that's what they are wanting to do. And I bet they can and most likely will do it better than any indie company can. Yes I have that much faith in them. Has SOE made some mistakes in the past? Sure thing.  However they have also made some of the best games to ever grace the MMO market. At least IMHO

I  feel this preview article was terrible.

I will wait for a real zombie MMO. H1Z1!

What a bunch of foolish posts. You guys are victims of mass marketing.

If anything what you will get from a large corporation will be anything but 'real' because they always cater to the lowest common denominator merely for profits rather than realism. You will get a dumbed down zombie game that will be as unrealistic as possible, because the masses are scared to die or lose anything in a game.

You will never see anything commercial that will ever compare to DayZ Epoch. What you will get is a WoW game with a zombie skin, practically guaranteed. So, I laugh at your foolish comments. Even DayZ Standalone promises to be very watered down compared to DayZ Epoch.

DayZ Epoch is open PvP and full loot. When you die, you start over and everything on your body drops to the ground. That is realism. You're not going to see anything close to that in H1Z1, what you're going to get is a zombie themepark with none of the risk, danger, excitement, and competition of DayZ Epoch. You probably won't  be able to custom build bases, and you probably won't have realistic military gear and game systems to play with either.

On top of everything else, you're going to have to pay a $50 and $10-15 monthly fee to be subjected to the corporate pile of crap which they will call a zombie game.

Get DayZ Epoch for $5 and you can build and play a realistic and dangerous zombie game indefinitely for only $5.

Don't be a sucker.

Well let me look at SOEs track record for me and then lets see if I'm a sucker. EQ1 was by far the number one game for me I have played in my MMO Experiance. I also played vanguard thru all the bad parts because the game was huge open immersive, and for me better than 95% of the crap that is released today. EQ2 while I was amped up for turned out to be a let down. But I came back to it years later and had a good time there. Planetside 2 is an absolute blast to play. The only game of theirs that I have played I didn't care for much was DCU, and it wasn't terrible.

So you call me a sucker when I am amped that a company that have put out at least 2 of my top 3 games then ya.. I say you got it wrong. .. I trust SOE a lot more than an indie dev team with limited to no resources. I have tried my share from teams like that and usually walk away unimpressed of feeling like i wasted my time, thinking it might be good.
