WAR: 1 step forward, 2 steps back? (realistic flame)
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 6/02/07 2:55:39 PM
I would just like to say that having anything less than total war between all of the races would be very un-warhammer like. I can understand the need to keep it organized and fun, as in the case of a specific story line or campaign, but it is also important to stay true to the roots of the game. There should be no restrictions whatsoever on who you can march your army against! I think that the interaction of the different skills in the game in various situations will provide a lot of depth and diversity, though it may lack a high number of classes like Daoc.

I've been waiting for this game so long that I am bound to be disapointed, no matter how fun it is to play. That won't stop me though. =) |

Kelkyen Rants: How classic D&D hurt modern mmo’s
MMORPG Game Concepts « Developers Corner 5/26/07 12:18:17 AM
The D&D system didn't hurt modern MMOs, what did was the people who tried to aproximate it in a computer game without even understanding why or how it really worked. MMOs aren't built on a "system", they are built on a stereotype. The rules for any pen and paper RPG are intended to be nothing more than a frame of reference, second always in importance to the pace and fun of the game. Why choose the D&D system or it's many clones? Because it was popular, and for no other reason. Skill based systems such as Fasa's Shadowrun had the advantage of facilitating a faster pace of play with the ability to aproximate realistic situations and smoother character scaling far, far more accurately than the D&D system. The D&D system was fun because it was an end in itself for many players, who loved to roll every type of dice possible.. It's worth noting on behalf of all geeks that there were no set "Roles" that the classes played in D&D, ever. That choice little nugget of crap was brought to you by the MMOs. Munchkins. I'm as sick of this as anyone, but I'm afraid the main reason this situation persists is the fact that these systems lend themselves very well to the time sink! $$$
