In the OP form - it would hardly work. As one author correctly mentioned: 95% from 50 players...and game is nice for 50 players.

I could imagine such thing work in a bit different way. Let us say, developers state: we could introduce new continent, another 50.000 quests, deeds, NPCs...and it costs that many USD. If we get this money, you will see new continent. If we do not get this money, you won't receive new continent. or cosmetic weapon. Or new mount.

Just not promise to promise about promising...

Blending ancient technology woith modern - would be OK for me. Something like "Thief II: the metal age" where I enjoyed both bow with arrows, swords, shields...and landmines blowing up steam walking robots. It had a really nice mix.

Should be a game with such settings, it could be ok for me too.

Precise example by thr OP: no, it won't be good. First medieval, then - oops, we have Nuclear Blaster...

Two games I could reccomend:

Istaria: completely free. F2P restrictions: only one race, cannot own plots of land. All content available for free players without restrictions;

Lord of the rings online: well, I am able to play it without investing a penny. Basic content is free, basic classes are free. What you pay for are all regions, except starters. F2P restrictions: no swift travel; gold cap limited [can be unlocked], 3 toons per server [additional may be unlocked/purchased], limited boxes in inventory [can bve unlocked/purchased]. All items may be bought at store for Turbine points (TPs). TPs are earned for deeds, like "kill 60 spiders, get 10 TPs".

OP probably meant that there is lack (in his opinion) of role-playing games.

Well....there is as much RP as one wishes to create, there are communities with role play.

And no, mmorpg genre is not dying, decaying, rolling to its doom, mmorpg genre does not need to re-emerge.

Istaria.

An old game. Pure PvE, player-driven economy. Free players can play Human race only (no Dryads or Fiends) and cannot own plots. Community is small, but friendly and helpfull.

Paying players can choose any race, including might Dragons, own plot of land and have more Consigment slots.

Lotro became pay to win (1,5 months of grind to use lvl.25-40 of weapon...or pay 300 euros) , cannot reccomend it.

Other games - depends on your taste. You could also try Everquest, Everquest II. if you enjoy Diablo type of controls and graphics - reccomend Path of Exile. For some adult content (running with 1/2 of bikini) and a bit gore - Age of Conan.

First option: buy Istaria, update graphic, introduce another 1 million quests, all wise proposals made by players  and enjoy the best PvE themepark.

If Istaria is not for sale/another billionaire bought it...Well, then a game that is:

  • pure PvE themepark
  • free to play, Istaria type model
  • if I am ever forced to have cashs shop - I would sell ONLY fluff items. Cool dress of the Morning Sun for some $ that gives zero advabtage, just cool look. Or War Pig of Gendalf the Noob for some $ - no combat use, no status, just pig you can ride.
  • easy mode
  • player-created content, from cosmetic shoes to some nice quest or story,. of course, after developers approve
  • solo friendly: each quest could be soloed. Irt may happen that lvl.30-40 quest is soloable only at lbvl.85, but it's still soloable
  • Hardcore server for those Screamers who want to enjoy permadeath and other things. You want it, you got it (though no PvP)
  • soft, bright scenery, Istaria/Lotro type
  • possibly - many fantasy races (of course, for paying members)
  • Random Number Generator is not crucial anymore: while it could work deciding what would lvl.7 Grulet drop, it won't stop players from obtaining end-game items
  • fantasy game, but without adult themes (no bikini armour) or anime-style (no pandas holding 50 meters high and 5 meters tall swords)
  • player housing and plots. Buy/rend land, plan buildings, build them and enjoy
  • each class is clearly defined and does what it is destined for. Ranged tank nukes from afar, but is weak at melee; melee tank smashes anything that is near, but has very poor ranged attacks etc. No "support" or "second tank" roles since they are worthless
  • player-owned market. No "Superb Shiny Combat Armour" that drops from spider or grulet
  • developers/all staff would have to create new toons every now and then, see how things look from single player's point of view - so that my stuff would get non-biased experience
  • many random events that happen now and then, from "kill 1,5 rats" to "craft me a candy, plz"

Istaria is a good game with nice community. Playerbase is somewhat small, but dedicated.

My advice:give it a try. If you start as free player - you have all quests and territories available, though can play only as Human race and cannot own land plots. Paying 15$/month lets you play any race, including mighty Dragons + own land (ever dreamed about your own settlement? or a set of fountains in the winter lands? Storage facilities where you need them?).

Should you need help - if you are on Order server, feel free to join Universal Soldiers channel and ask my toon, Naktieskarys, for aid.

Now Lotro is offcially pay to win game.

I thought some "wise" developers were unwise enough to tax general chats ("you are f2p? No general chat then!"). Turbine made it deeper.

Legendary weapon would have some 40 levels after you "imbue".

25 levels are free. 15 levels - paid for thousands of mithril coins.

So far every single game I have heared of was not taxing levels, be it combat, crafting, legendary or anything else. Lotro has made first step towards pay to win model: first, but not last.

LI system needed re-thinking, but developers made it pay-to-win way. Instead of asking experienced players what can be done, they simply taxed it. It's not overhaul, it's taxing.

Whart's next stop, Turbine? Taxing combat level? Number of weapons I carry? Crafted items?

[offtopic]time to revive my thread about new online game: Lotro is just going down, either to Asian grind or some Russian pay-to-win model[/offtopic]

Istaria.

Economy is almost entire player-driven. You need good armour? Ask armourer. Need spells? Spellcrafter should be around. Player owned plots have structures from  tier 1 to highest tier 6 that need your aid to appear (no NPC would come and help).

Restrictions: plot owning only for those paying 15$/month. Free players can be only Humans and do not own plot. All other content is available to every player, paying or not. Graphic is not top one, community (after, say, popular Lotro servers) may appear small (but is is friendly and reliable).

If you choose Istaria's server Order, feel free to find my toon, Nakties karys on Universal Soldiers chat.

Played (i.e. was active longer than 7 days):

Istaria

Lord of the rings online

Age of Conan

(all others: download, play, realise I don't like, uninstall)

Istaria.

Pros: good community: should you need advice on killing that grulet or where to get some quest, there would always be someone to aid.. Player-driven economy (no, grulet won't drop Shiny Armour of Total Defense). All All content open for free players. Restrictions for f2p are minimal. Crafting is very good, there are player built settlements that serve as crafting centers or simply amusement parks (just not a fountain in the ice lands...).

Player-drvien economy does shine there. You want build a settlement? Ok, plan it, place scaffolds...and then playerss could aid you.  You come and see this structure is finished, that is almost done by people you have never known before.

Cons: pretty aged graphic, each Tuesday - maintenenace that takes some 4 hours. Community is small (but once again, very good).

Istaria.

No cash shop (unless you treat "cash shop" as online store with mugs). Few paying plans, top one - 15$/motnh allows all races and plot owning.

it did not read all of 3 pages.

My reccomendations:

Istaria:Chronicles of the Gifted

Really free to play: all content avauilable, all quests, all skills, inventories etc. Restrictions for free players: only Human race, cannot own land.

Community: small. Pros - noit so much competition for that valuable ore or wood; community itself is very helpfull.

Multiclassing: finish all battle and crafting schhols.

Player driven economy, including player plotds at strategic locations serving as crafting stations.

Grind:initially - very little. As you multiclass, you will find yourself in a grindy position. Building may mean grind, but it pays off.

Lord of the rings online

Free to play with conditions: some regions are free, others - purchasable with Turbine points or ca$h. Restriction for free users removable with Turbine points mostly.

Turibine points: now are hard to earn for a new player.

Community: normal size and mostly helpfull.

Economy: Auction house / loot driven.

At top levels game is almost completely based on random number generator. You fight in territory A and get a lootbox. There could be tokens of territory A...or tokens of territory B. Or territoroy C. If you have luck, good for you.

Content tending to force-grouping and hardcore, at top levels. Good, if you are fan of this.

Grind: medium. Initilaly "kill XYZ grulets" is not evil. later, we have some really evil slayer deeds.

Pros: heavy lore orientated. If you like Tolkien and cannot miss Gandalf + mr. Frodo - you may enjoy it.

Both games are PvE with only optional PvP.

Lots of questions from casual soloer, PvE fan (and pvP hater) looking for somethinjg other than Istaria and Lotro. I.e. to replace Lotro with something.

And so it goes. Please forgive me if questions sounds silly.

  1. Typically - how do I level up? Quests (like in Lotro), mindless slaying of grulets/rats/whatsoever like in Istaria?
  2. Number of game-given quests - low, high...?
  3. Race. Does it give something to me? Like in Lotro - Hobbits can be burglars and are sneaky etc.
  4. Housing: does it have one?
  5. PvP: can I be attacked by someone higher by 30 levels just because big guy wants to kill noob?
  6. Is there a build similar to Lotro's Minstrel: powerfull ranged AoE magic user, capable of powerfull self-heals?
  7. What about in-game income? Is it easy to earn in  game coins or a hard work?
  8. Crafting. As far as I understood, there are lots of schools, but the deepier you go, the more expensive it is. if I am to pick one school - what would be the best for soloer, posisbly - local Minstrel type?
  9. Skills. What skills are crucial for Minstrel-type toon?
  10. What equipment is crucial for Minstyrel-type toon?

To be honest, it is very weird to hear.

I rarely use other chats - only Universal Soldiers. There we have almost competition (much like in Lotro) about who could help first.  One player started a plot at a very good location: i was lucky to aid first, then one of the most respected players helped, then yet another, our Guild leader told if plot owner is out of money, it's no problem - leader will help him. Now we have many players helping one player with a plot. We gain nothing of this - no xp, no money, just being happy ot help others.

I used to go to New Trismus, stand/run around, ask new players if they needed help or wait untill they ask me. Now, when there are so many plots to aid with, I could hardly afford this.

So, if you are on Order server - feel free to join Universal Soldeirs chat and I beleieve your questions will be answered, should you need help - you will be helped.

Would be extremely hard to run. Easy to run Wikipedia when every person that uses internet for information search, uses Google and Wikipedia.

Harder for game. You should convince every single to give money for expenses and profits.

I could foresee a game that would employ "kickstarter v.2.0" engine. Something players tried to discuss with Lotro team about housing.

Situation:Lotro team is not excited about housing and plan no upgrades on it. Players told they (devs) could kickstart housing upgrade: calculate costs and tell players - if you want, vote with your money, once we get funds, you get housing. It's not pay-to-win or even pay-ti-play (if you are satisfied with current housing, no need to donate), but it could work.

And pure donation game...well, it could stay on the surface with very low and very loyal player base.

Well well well...

TERRA: played. Tried some "mobile artillery of terra" - smth that attacks with disc. Almost playable. Then tried archer: very good, playable. Then - some kind of sorcerer that had AoE attack and self-heal. Killed by lvl.3 Tree. Result - Terra uninstalled. Sorry, dear developers, it is hard when 2 of 3 your toons at lvl.3 die from non-named lvl.3 monster.

Terra does have strong influence of anime. Pandas, fat goat-men, swords that are bigger than person, holding it...Tried to cope with it, but perhabs with little success.

NEVERWINTER: thought about trying once. What stopped me, was some weird and not neccessary "Arc" software. Come on, if I want to play game, I will install game, not third party soft(spy/ad)ware to launch game. Is there anay way to bypass Arc?

WURM: well...what about PvP here? if it is sandbox, does it mean someone could come and ruin my hard hard work?

Tera would have worked except it flirts a bit too much with anime.

Interesting game. Downloaded via torrent, installed. Now have 2 ranged classes, bot female. No chance to customize body (i.e. make really big-chested...). Robes, head, even voice can be. Controls are harder than I epxected and need to run to trainer once I get new skill.

So far, mixed impressions. Anime is not evil per se. Even pandas aren't. Controls are not so easy to learn. So far little story. yet...yet I will try to get accustomed to Terra (provided I could escape PvP so that no one could attack me).

AoC maybe?

Tried earlier. Good side: big-chested ToS running around in little bikini. bad side: sometimes hard content, once you finish zone, almost no way to return back.

Otherwise I would buy GW2, it initially do have a cost (saw it for 25 bucks at my local store this week) but it have a very different level of polish compared with any F2P game I played, it fits your bill perfectly (it do have PvP but it is in special instances and you will get hitpoints like a max level character if you enter there so no 50 levels over ganking even if you enter the PvP zones willfully).

Only thing not exactly to your wishes with it is that the housing system at the moment is rather bad, you do have an entire block but I have just a few gathering nodes, a skillpoint and an X-mas tree in mine.

Well, besides that you have to cough up a few bucks to get the game but the advantage of that is that GW2s itemshop is a lot less severe than in any F2P game I played and you could get anything in it for in game gold (I bought some cosmetic armor and wepons and an extra character slots recently for gold that actually is pretty fast to get in once you have a maxlevel character).

Unlikely that I will try, since it envolves paying...and I am hardocre free-to-play...but thanks for advice anyway. Maybe I'll try it one day

Istaria.

Many crafting schools (you can learn them all and level up to lvl.100). To make things more interesting, there is player housing and should you contribute to it, you get xp. So: if you make marble brick, you get xp; if you make Marble keystone from it - you get xp; if you add marble keystone to nuilding - you get xp too.

Weapons can be customized with desired effects or just empty spaces for crystals.

Dear mods, sorry for necro-posting...but maybe it's better to revive old thread than create another with same title?

Once again - asking for same help.

Lotro has sbecome un-playbale for me. The only thing I force myself to do is to turn in task items, take Hobbit presents, pay for house upkeep. Also - chat with my Kinship, the only aspect of game that still holds me there.

I have returned to Istaria, now am over-busy with crafting (so many structures, so many help needed, so little time)...but still am not convinced if it is really my game.

I do enjoy kind of peacefull games (Lotro could be one - wonder in green hills of the Shire at, say, level 30 and enjoy nature). Istaria could be one, especially with crafting and finishing every single crafting school. Age of Conan - played, but did not like. It is brutal and sometimes hard for me.

Any other advices about quality f2p fantasy game?
