Well, variety is nice....just support the game and you are supporting the industry.

I prefer melee combat in all the games I play, even sci fi games.  Pre-CU SWG was my favorite and there will be no sci fi game that will match it...except for CRUSADES by vizualfx.

Anyone else let down about the class choice, I mean mythic boasts about 20 classes but the classes are just mirrors of eachother with very little to distinguish themselves. Most have the same abilities just named something else. Kind of lame to me although I do enjoy WAR and plan on buying it.

They are not exact mirrors...they only mirror the mechanics and some class specific skills.

But WAR really does "borrow" alot from COH .  Originally I was going with Guild Wars but that i think about it.  It is more like COH where everyone has stamina.  Only people who don't know what they are talking about think its like WoW.

Here is how it is like COH:

1) a fairly large action resource that regnerates at a moderate speed.  Of all the previous MMO WAR combat is definitely closest to COH  no question.

2) a number of CC effects most notably Knockdown and especially knockback are movement, position and animation based.

3) Auto exemplar in PvP.  COH was the first to use this and Bolster is EXACTLy the same thing.  The only difference is WAR gives people who are above the bolster level an edge and COH makes everyone exactly the same level

4) class design is much more similar to COH although far more locked down.  Tanks that have damage you have to watch.  Blasting support types (Defenders to Arhcamge shamn engineer magus).   An egineer is just a traps Corruptor.   The hybrid and special class mechanics is straight out of the City of Villains playbook.

Yep I was talking to someone in game during OB and they mentioned this.  The more i think about the more it makes sense.

The whole WoW clone meme is rather sad.  Shows how set into a mental rut many people are.  When you look at it in detail it makes very little sense especially when there are games that have twice as many basic game mechanic similarlities.

Now if only the WAR had the huge build varitity of COH.  Of course the balance would probably suck then.

Although in general there is a decent number of classes and good customization.  But nothing like COH

Good!!  I love the way CoX plays, it is the only other account I keep active...I love how they recently tweaked Stalkers.  I will always keep my CoX account along with my WAR accounts....what i have already canceled and will never resubscribe to is WoW.  The developers as so damn biased towards the alliance and druids it is disgusting.  They even mention their favorites in their own forums and their constant disdain for other classes is obvious in the lack of responses in those class forums and the manner in which those few responses are made.....such bias and unprofessionalism....I am amazed but not surprised.

Bud, the e-mail that had your open beta code also has your headstart code.  Go back and look at that e-mail, it is in the second half of it....I had the same concern as you and reread that original e-mail.

See you in game!! GO DESTRUCTION!!!!

This is an excellent point. Everything about Star Wars in the 2000s -- mainly the prequels -- are directly aimed at the kiddos.

Hate to break it to you, but the Star Wars from the 70s and 80s was also aimed at "kiddos.". It's probably why grownups where so bitter about the prequel movies. They never realized the grew up and were watching them from an adult perspective.

Hate to break it to you, but the SW fanbase is much much larger in the 30-40 year old group than < 30 year olds. Every SW convention or fanfaire I see, has a lot of middle aged people dressed up like Obi or an Imp officer, look for some pics around the internet.

Yea, the original movie captured the hearts of the youth when it was released...those ppl are now early 40's.

I understand trying to capture new markets by attracting the youth of today but i think they might be going about it .....wrong.

Again, they are ignoring their original fan base for newer markets...what will happen to those ppl a few years down the road?  WIll they be ignored for yet a newer breed of customers?

I have given up on Lucas Arts and any chance they might make a SWG similiar to the Pre-CU.  i am waiting for Crusades by vizualfx.

Smedley told me that focus groups drove the changes and what was best for the game.

Those focus groups started after the decision was made to alter the game, and they originated at LucasArts, not SOE.

I probably said this before three years ago, but them throwing the market researchers under the bus still continues to piss me off. As a (former) market research industry insider, I know for fact that their focus groups were bullshit, moreso than what most people suspected.

They got what they paid for -- they didn't pay much so they got shitty research. From a statistical standpoint they had minimal or no quantitative data at all: you don't get that from focus groups. The best they might've mustered is surveys of applicants and a couple of "show of hands" answers. Worst yet is that the interviews were localized to the bay area of Cali. ONE group out of many nationwide.

The whole thing reaks of least-possible-investment, and they definitely reaped what they sowed. Research is extremely valuable, IF you're willing to spend more than $10k on it...

Well..

Regardless of what they paid.. I was contacted 3 (yes three) times for focus studies on SWG.  Everytime I was told up front that it was an independant group hired by Lucas Arts.. SOE was never even mentioned any time that I was contacted.

The first time somehow they didn't realize I was not local to the area they wanted.  So that was a no go..

The second time I was "to old"

The third time... I had a played an MMO before..

So out of 3 contacts I took part in 0 studies..

They got exactly what they paid for as you say.. but it was apparant to anyone who was contacted they wanted a different demographic.

In fact the third study didn't only want you to have NEVER played an MMO... They preferred that you were heavily into playing console games.

Which is why when I see people hype up how the next Star Wars MMO.. will be awesome since SOE won't be involved... I just shake my head and move along.

Won't matter who makes the game.. Lucas Arts owns the IP and it was pretty apparant that I'm not a customer they want.   At 39 I'm older than they want.. and I don't play consoles.

Wow...amazing.  I guess there are young idiots in charge who think if you are older than they are you dont have money or hobbies....quite the opposite infact.

Me and my wife are in our 40's and we pay for several games for ourselves and our two sons.  Guess all the accounts we pay for are not for them.

Ignorance is bliss.

i actually canceled my account last night.

i hate how they nerfed my enhancement shaman into nothing and plan to keep him weak in comparison to the other classes in the expansion.  I do not want to reroll one of the three truely epic and overpowered classes.  they have a tendancy of destroying your characters pvp abilities to create another OP'd class in the hopes you reroll that class.  That way they don't have to add content and ensure ppl who only care about being l33t will keep playing.   That is not me.

Hehe, seems I have seen that Icon before Fatal!

Glad to see you are posting here and talking with the members of this forum.....I don't think I have ever seen a company do that before.

I can't wait for this game!

I was a melee stacker in SWG and that was the most fun I ever had in a game system....until my class was deleted and I was supposed to choose something else, I chose to cancel

I have been looking forward to a game like this for years now.....finally!

Well, I find it surprising that some players are relatively old!

Me and my wife are in our early 40's (she doesnt post or read forums) but I can post some childish rants at times (means of release for me).

Anyway, I do remember a guy that played City of Heroes, his characte was called Coyote.  He actually died but he was a great advocate for the game and a known entity.  Cryptic actually took his character and made it part of the newbie introduction.  I thought that was a great thing....he will always be in the game he loved, and those that knew him will always see him.

I thought that was a class act by Cryptic.

Howdy, does AoC have their epic armor yet?  I remember seeing the epic (or whatever they call it in that game) of the ranger, it was very nice....

At least they are together again!

Hi, I am wondering how one would replicate Batman in CoH...I know you cant make an exact replica, which is good, (copyright and all) but how would you do it?

I would assume he would be a technology scrapper, with dark melee as his primary and will power as a secondary?

For the epic power I would think the one that has the exploding shuriken and stuff.

For costume options i would go with one of the techish looking chests or maybe the chitin chest...the get the spines for the gloves...the helmet might be difficult but still doable....

Have there been any new "batmen" running around CoX lately?  I remember seeing alot of Wolverines when the game launched...and tons of MR America, Canada and Soviet Union....never saw a Union Jack though.

Anyway, any suggestions?

Oh, I had no idea that the OP was talking about D&D....I seriously doubt that would be the case.  I initially thought the OP was refering to some SW RPG.

Anyway, I think the game would have more to do with KOTOR and SWG.  There are devs from both games working on this one.  I am familiar with SWG but not with KOTOR.

So, in KOTOR can you specialize?  Could you focus on melee and and use the force only for jealing or buffing?

I would love to make a melee based character that relies on the force to heal and for utility like force cloak or enhanced running.  However, I prefer to use mundane melee weapons for combat.

In SWG I was a melee stacker but with the "village" I gave up much of my template to incorporate force powers, but not lightsaber junk.

I hope I can do that in this game....it can only happen if it is skill based.

I haven't read the entire post yet but I understand that four classes have been dropped.....I think the scrawny chaos buffer/debuffer guy...I  cant think of the name!!  Anyway, I am sure that class will probably go.  It is not really part of the Chaos armies...if you check out the Army books for the table top game.  Aside from that, I would think the dark elf disciple will go away too...which makes me cry cause I love that class but I have not seen that in the Army book for dark elves....

Anyway, back to the top to vote!

This is a very interesting question and one that companies should pay attention to.

Now, I left EQ to play SWG but the reason I did is because I was very frustrated in EQ.  I wanted to see the end game but my guild was too small.  I could hardly find a group which meant I didnt get to play...but what was playing in that game?  It was really just a grind, but with a group.  So I was ripe to switch games....(take note publishers).

THen out comes SWG!!  Yes, I love the SW IP, I love science fiction and science fantasy (SW is science fantasy, not fiction)  (A definition, offered by Rod Serling, is that "science fiction makes the implausible possible, while science fantasy makes the impossible plausible." )

So, I was ready and there was an opportunity...SWG.  But, what kept me in this game?

It was everything...no forced grouping, housing, the most elaborate crafting ever, player based economy, socialization (you end up doing it due to the economy...no way around it), skill trees vice lvls, player cities and housing, mission terminals and the sandbox style.  It was those elements that made the game for me.  I would play any game that offered those elements again.

In SWG you could play without a group, I never thought I would enjoy a game so much...my only complaint was the "betrayal" from SOE...

Short answer, no...we dont need SW in SWG.  In fact, the MMO by Bioware and Lucas will probably not meet their unrealistic expectations....most SW fans are older and older folks prefer the old SWG style...not the wow style.
