World of Warcraft: Battle.Net Dial-In Authenticator
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/14/10 12:46:42 PM
Or pay $7 for an authenticator, use Chrome cause it's faster and download your addons from a site like WoWinterface which is a little more player friendly, imho. |

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Digital Preorders
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/01/10 12:22:46 AM
I prefer digital delivery but not from Bliz with the problems they had when 4.01 launched I'd be a tad upset (nice way of saying extremely p!ssed) if they screwed me over on this as well. But that said my girlfriend and I already decided to forego the collector's edition, we only want the pet anyway, but I can't see anyone spending $80 and not getting the box. I still have the orig. collector's edition on my bookshelf :D |

General: Game Designers Address Misconceptions About PvP
News Discussion « General Discussion 8/02/10 3:30:21 PM
As far as I'm concerned, and this is just imho as always, an MMO without PVP it too much of a walk down a path in the forest. It's pretty, I enjoyed it but I never left the path. The only real, unscripted moments any game can throw at you has to revolve around other players. The chaos factor. Without the chaos, possibilities, whatever you want to call it, it's still enjoyable but not as much as it could have been. For me. When the day finally comes that someone launches a true triple A title, maybe not focused on PvP but allowing for the fact that players can do what they could if it were a real world, with definite consequences of those actions in place, I'll be happy man and I think many people will finally understand that there isn't a true challenge unless another player, prick or not, is behind it. At least in an MMO, FPS, etc. Don't get me wrong, love games like Bioshock but unless Bioware can pull that off in a multi-player world, we're stuck with each other as our best competition. |

General: Exteel: NCSoft Pulling the Plug
News Discussion « General Discussion 7/29/10 9:27:39 AM
NCSoft didn't used to be that bad a publisher, they've just turned into the modern SOE within the past say 2 to 3 years. Before this I honestly thought of them as respectable but the way they've handled everything since Champion's Online has really tarnished their rep. NCSoft, for me at least, was never a plus for a game but they are definitely a minus now along with SOE and EA. |

I think he was just making a game mechanic comparison not calling Diablo an MMO. And no, I haven't heard of one. |

It must be the age group but I'm the same kind of player. My girlfriend dragged me back to WoW a few months ago and I agreed as long as we started fresh on a new server and ran the content instead of just a speed run. Enjoying it so far, as a mage too. And yeah I think you nailed the biggest problem with WoW and games like it, no one wants to run the old content unless they need points for gear by running heroics. But at least the journey, for us anyway, has been fun so far. Honestly the best part of WoW for me is the addons so you might want to look into that. I'm not a big fan of the stat tracking one's but the UI changes are great and I don't think anything besides my character window is the same as what Blizz supplied. Good luck, hope you enjoy the trip. One thing I forgot, the dungeons may be a bit of a disappointment to you. They definitely aren't EQ or UO rated. More often then not it's a tank pulling too many trash mobs that'll get you killed than a tough boss because the boss fights, at least at lower and mid levels, aren't very challenging. It's kind of a let down. I killed all those guys to take him out? Really? But if you get into the lore and enjoy the story it's still worthwhile. |

Your experience in WoW at this point will completely depend on your guild. Most likely to get leveled up you'll end up in a large guild that doesn't raid much, has vent but isn't used much. Best thing to do is stick with them til 80, learn what you got to learn then move on to a raiding guild you like. It might take a bit to find the right group of people. If you're going to give it a shot now is the time. If you enjoy it you may want to level up another character after Cat hits and having BOA items will help tremendously. My advice, if you want to try horde anyway and want a large player base, go to Arthas. Solid, large community and a guild like Twisted Fate is a good place to start. Pretty active leveling guild that will get you to where you want to be and run by a fairly mature lady. If you played UO when I did you're probably about my age and want to have fun but not deal with the regular bs you'll find a lot of in other guilds. When you hit that 80 point get to a raiding guild that will teach you the fights or raid with the 80's we have running around til you do. Even if you don't hit that guild Arthas is a solid server, either side really, but Alliance side is a little sparse when it comes to good guilds. But don't wait, if you like the game and want to experience other classes it'd be good to know old world before the new one hits and at least be in range of getting decent BOA gear when Cat does hit. Good luck. |

Star Wars: The Old Republic: Friday Update; Community Manager Confirms Race Restrictions
News Discussion « General Discussion 6/20/10 9:10:44 PM
Give me a SW game that fits the mythic or go make a different game. As long as it fits with what we know, and especially when it comes to the Chiss this is important, do what you got to do. If you aren't happy because the Star Wars mythic doesn't fit your MMO fantasies go play a non SW MMO. This is Star Wars, why wouldn't they do everything they could to make the game based on the Star Wars IP fit into the Star Wars universe. Anything less would be a ridiculous waste of their time and ours. |

General: Forsaken World: E3 2010 Trailer
News Discussion « General Discussion 6/20/10 9:03:33 PM
The video is fairly useless, no story or even, with the obvious WotLK overtones, speaking over the video to give us some idea what this is all about. I'm kinda intrigued but I won't be looking into this game yet strictly because the video told us absolutely nothing. If they're gonna throw something like this at us it should have at least been actual gameplay footage. At least we'd have an idea what the game is looking like. Right now I have no clue what the devs are intending. Inform and entertain, it's like someone who has no idea what a Kindle is watching Amazon's commercial for it, it's pretty but what was that for again? |

At this point I would with a warning of the cost he's going to incur though. Make sure he enjoys the trial and has friends playing that will play with him too. As much as I regret the changes Blizz has made to WoW, for instance SW Harbor, no one runs through Wetlands anymore, I still think it's an interesting game to a point. Pretty much anything after you hit 80 seems like a waste to me at best. But if he enjoys the trial and can get into the addon aspect of the game, one of my favorite parts, he might enjoy it for the first few runs to 80. |

Who played WoW in vanilla that still plays?
General Discussion « World of Warcraft 5/29/10 4:50:52 PM
Originally posted by Ozreth Gotta agree with this. I remember open world PvP as pointless but weirdly fun. One of my earliest wow memories was me standing on the road in Silverpine Forest outside of Sepulcher waiting for some horde to hit me so my guild mates hiding behind a rock could jump them. Lol pointless but fun. After BGs it all went to the twinks, really too bad. Except for 80s running around southern Eastern Kingdoms there really isn't much OWPvP going on. |

I recently realized how much I enjoy the freedom of UI addons in WoW. I'm really not a big WoW fan, I play mostly for my girlfriend, this is her first MMO and I can't seem to get her interested in another. But with this realization I'm wondering if this is why I'm no longer playing CoH or the several other MMOs I've played and how the MMOs I'm looking forward to will fare. I'm a huge SW fan, sorry I'm just a geek at heart, I read the books, love most (sorry George but you screwed us) of the movies and TV shows and got a warm tingly feeling all over when I saw the first shots of Tatooine. Memories from early SWG, I left long before "the change", came flooding back and I swear I felt like a little kid at Christmas but if I'm locked into a UI, even one that can be unlocked to some extent, I don't think I'll be as happy as I could be. I feel the same for all the MMOs I'm looking forward to. I really think WoW shouldn't be held up as an example of what a MMO should be except for this point. Nothing against WoW or Blizz but I'm an old school player who misses games with the challenge early UO and early EQ had but I think UI addons are something any future MMO devs should really be looking into. Just to be clear I'm not talking about game changing addons, Questhelper (before Blizz created their own) comes to mind but at the same time I think alot of the changes we've seen in WoW's UI, etc. can be linked to past addons. Anyway does anyone else think this is a necessary feature or completely disagree with me? |

Who played WoW in vanilla that still plays?
General Discussion « World of Warcraft 5/29/10 4:17:11 PM
Been playing WoW off an on, mostly on, since early beta and yeah I still play. The reasons I've always gone back is to keep my girlfriend happy but I recently realized another major component I thoroughly enjoy and really miss in other MMOs, addons. Yeah I'd rather play an early EQesque type of game, I really hate that Blizz thinks we can't handle invisible enemies at 10 or realize that getting clubbed in the back of the head before then might slow us down but I cannot stand being locked into a UI after having the freedom I do with WoW and that's why i think I'm still there, besides the fact that we finally found a server I'm really happy with. Arthas is excellent on both sides for those looking, highly recommend Twisted Fate for horde if you're looking for a guild, solid, mature but not boring guild. Nothing similar that I've found on Alliance side I'm afraid. But still a very solid community... for WoW. |

General: Blizzard to Integrate Battle.net and Facebook
News Discussion « General Discussion 5/06/10 12:56:53 AM
Let's just hope they don't require a facebook account for battle.net, or plan on it. Really trying to avoid this thing, no I do NOT want to plow your field... thanks. |

Originally posted by FC-Famine I've been a big Funcom supporter, I stayed through the ridiculous AO beta and launch and played for years and have been recently thinking about rejoining AoC but the above statement may have changed my mind. This is the same bullsh*t logic the MPAA and RIAA use against pirates. A blanket statement saying you can't help your players (yes I'm boiling this down I know) because some may be gold sellers or using power-leveling services is, to quote the late great John Wayne, ri-god-damn-diculous. Now the sad fact may be that you simply cannot help these customers but handling it like this, pretty much telling them you cannot control your game because of outside influences, is not helping. Quit passing the buck and get down to what anyone would expect from a subscription service, service. As far as how you handle these occurrences this needs to be addressed as well. This is not the glory days of EQ and UO where we really did not have a choice, we have almost too many at this point and your customers can and will leave if you cannot protect their investment of time and money, and it is an investment. I'm betting these weren't items easily obtained on a level 5 character. As far as the logs go, if they are available and you want to keep your customer base happy why not check them? I'm betting it's a problem of costing Funcom too much to scroll through those logs to help these customers and possibly stop a thief. In closing, quit using the excuse that you aren't doing anything differently than your competition, that just doesn't fly. Try being an innovator. P.S. Smiley faces do not help when you were just told your service provider cannot provide a safe service. ;) |

What sandbox features/depth would you like to see in a Zombie MMOFPS?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 4/16/10 1:19:38 AM
Being able to spread the infection is a must. Still my favorite WoW moment was infecting NPCs or players in new areas with whatever they called the plague a couple halloweens ago when WotLK launched. That was remarkably fun and hours of entertainment. Focus on a skill tree (no classes) that you switch between depending whether you're a human or zombie would be a nice touch. How far you progress in each tree could be skill based instead of level. For instance if you really just want to spread the infection you could focus your zombie tree on that while focusing your human tree on healing or melee combat, etc. Add to that the ability to fortify a human position, realistic feeding requirements for both sides and realistic use of a city, as in subway, sewers, etc. basically multiple layered exits and entrances to fortified positions and it sounds like fun to me. There would have to be some kind of penalty though for switching sides at least at first, otherwise I'll be throwing myself over the wall to join the undead horde every chance I get. |

Depends, if we're talking Bioshock 1 timeline, yeah it could be interesting, if we're talking Bioshock 2, meh. It's not that Rapture isn't interesting without Ryan it's that Lamb never was interesting, that and the fact that they either need to find a way to rebuild Rapture or, like a couple of the endings suggested, move on to a new setting which could, handled poorly, kill the series. What could be really interesting is seeing a BS (ooh they gotta fix that) MMO start with the opening of Rapture and slowly seeing the populace moving into madness, but how long do you drag that out for before people get bored. Maybe start with a standard human avatar and be given the options as to how far down the rabbit holes available you'll go. If they can keep it interesting I'd be willing to sink some time into that. But how do you handle factions, if it's beyond Lamb or even during the war. Too many questions and possibilities filling my head, gang (as in guild) warfare, are Big Daddy's (or Sister's) playable, if it's set another ten years after BS2 what could possibly be left? A big one, how do you let players really have an impact in either a world ruled by Ryan and Fountaine or a world on the edge of collapse, literally buildings falling on your head. The power vacuum Lamb would leave behind could be interesting but we all know now what happened after Fountaine and Ryan fell so those years would be trite at best. One good possibility, again depending, this could be the first good FPS MMO if they head that way. But either way leave GFWL on the street corner where it belongs this time. |

Now can I have my stones please? |
