It's ironic because the reason the iphone is so great is because it has so many apps and is compatible with everything but mac comps aren't compatible with anything because pc owns the market. (Also macs are wayyy overpriced)

at least a mac has something you might have never seen:

I find it even more funny that blizzard refuse to release any quarterly subs figures since ~AION~ has gone live in Asia. Considering how happy they were to talk about the sub numbers before.... A little korean game like Aion has really shut blizzard up, its really funny

YES you are right:

  1. yes, aion had tremendous impact on the release of subscrition numbers
  2. yes, there has never been a moon landing, all has been filmed by the CIA in a filmstudio
  3. yes, still they keep those aliens imprisoned in area 51
  4. yes, sliced bread is a korean invention

Glad to see you jump in the water with us. The water is chilly, but tolerable. You problably know more than us being in the business, so answer me this.

How hard is it to implement flexible payment options?  are there additional expense/ managing factors we are not aware of?

That being said I cannot imagine the future of MMOs in the west not implementing RMT in their systems.  As long as games make item shops optional and not essential for the gaming experience, I have no qualms with it.  I am particularly intrigued with the free to play game Nodiatis (I posted this elsewhere too).  Players who buy goodies spread the wealth (by givign in game coin) to other players whether they subscribe or not. What I am not a big fan of, but could be a useful tool is the epic item concept. If you loot an epic item, you have to purchase 'virtues' to enable its use. Otherwise you can only sell it. This may tie in along with the non raid service subscription you offered up. If you don't like to raid, but you like the gear of raids, well $5 of unlocking fee allows you to wear / sell / trade the epic item. Of course you still have to pony up the gold to buy it at auction, etc.

They also have 'time cards" which grants a player rested experience (increased rates of advancement, drops, etc.). $4.99 grants you 6 hours of rested time. Note the game normally grants two hours of rested time to all players per day after that advancement rates are reduced.

Other things that may be of value is the rebate. Buy now, get a rebate later.

despite the fountain of your knowledge about mmorpgs in the western market:

<quote>

I cannot imagine the future of MMOs in the west not implementing RMT in their systems

the following  games fare well without microtransaction crap:

WoW

LotR

Vanguard

SoR

AoC

Does anyone have the # of current paying subs for aion. I havnt seen it mentioned for a while, Last I heard it was around 3million but that was a couple months ago. Ive been searching around, but havent found or heard anything on current numbers.

It could very well be approaching 4mill by now at the rate word of mouth spreads.

hm ... may i ask a few questions in response?

  1. how important are subscrition numbers to you ?
  2. are you a stake holder? (then i would understand any interrest *smiles*)
  3. is the number of subscriptions something you base a decicion upon?

BTW:

quantity is never any (good) argument.

think of: "millions of flies cannot be wrong. shit tastes great" :)

despite having watched all the films numerous times, i still find sthe backround so much jedi/sith-centralised that it will be difficult for everyone to come up with a good reason to get involved with other professions or classes.

the main reason is not about jedis/sith beeing overpowered, it's about how (even roleplay related) interesting is it to play something else?

and here in my opinion is the bigger problem:

if you cannot show or produce enough "feeling" or "immersion" about other races or classes you will end up with a jedi/sith population about 99.9%, but thats not a game related issue it is much more related to story background or the lack of those regarding non jedi/sith lore and/or fiction.

According to Mr Heimburg Blizzard's B team is now working on the game, with more talented internal developers working on other projects. It would be an odd decision, to move your key talent from a franchise which still has over ten million subscribers.

Eric Heimburg has been involved in the MMO scene for a long time and has worked on Asheron's Call 2 and Star Trek Online. He talks about the bugs which have crept into World of Warcraft and how instead of being tweaked immediately, they now take longer than ever.

MMOZine Issue 13 For our latest World of Warcraft coverage, click here to download MMOZine Issue 13 for free."More and more little mistakes have crept into the game recently - changes that are positive on the surface, but have not been implemented with the finesse that makes them worthwhile."

But we cannot see WoW's dominance changing and the fact that a there isn't much management oversight, may make forthcoming changes more radical and exciting for gamers.

"When the game stops being in the spotlight, the live team suddenly gets a lot more flexibility to make the game fun, instead of being forced to stick to now-outdated "design visions"."

The article is posted on the right, offers gamers an insight into what may be going on at Blizzard towers. We may see some big changes over the coming months.

even the "C-team" of a professional and proven(!) game-development company like BLizzard will do much better than all the "one-day"-flies that spam us with their "suboptimal" crap!

Time to take a step on the dark side and tempt fate, ladies and gentlemen.

Many of us are anticipating TOR with baited breath; heralding it as the saviour of the genre and eagerly awaiting the long-overdue focus on storytelling and "traditional" RPG values.

But there's that tiny element of doubt, isn't there? It's there, wriggling around in the back of our minds, trying to make itself heard. We all have it; we're fans of a genre that feeds on hype and delights in sacrificing the hopes and expectations of its devotees upon the altar of business stratagem; here's my list:

Failure of the Core Concept

Like so many games, TOR has a unique selling point; Story. WAR also had a unique selling point: RvR. So did AoC: Combat + Citybuilding. They promised so much and disappointed us so utterly; what if TOR does the same thing? A fully voiced version of WoW questing where NPCs demand (in a strong "imperial" accent) that you go and kill 10 x gizka?

The Bait & Switch Endgame

Much is being made of TOR's solo-friendliness, but then WoW is solo-friendly too, isn't it? Right up to max level where the mentality has always been "Raid or Reroll" .. ! .. What if TOR is the same? Your "hero" finally reaches level 80 having completed his epic storyline and finds himself on a strange planet infested with radio chatter such as "LFM: 52 needed for PUG Emperor raid lawl. Bring consumables, force-healing specced jedi ONLY. No sabernubs ffs, we got enuff DPS."

Monochrome Morality

I'd hazard a guess that most of you have played KOTOR1+2 so will know that the actions of the character will almost certainly cause alignment shifts in TOR. I remember reading an article a little while ago that stated that strong dark/light side characters would gain special abilities which made me worry; is the much-vaulted "player choice" essentially limited to character creation?

If I start along the "light sided" path by saving a puppy rather than killing it, skinning it, baking the meat in a pie and force-feeding it to the crying child who owned it .. am I doomed to forever walk the path of the altruistic doormat for fear of gimping my character? If halfway through my development I have a moment of madness and slaughter a girl guide troupe (rather than pay 5 creds for some cookies - lightside style) will I be forced to reroll?

What about you? What's the worst that could happen?

The definitely worst that could happen is:

  1. ncsoft takes over the game
  2. asian samurais and skirt wearing manga jedis are going to happen
  3. gameguard will be implemented, and all the bottters laugh themselfes to death
  4. you will have to preorder it on about 75,- € in order to try it out
  5. THIS is what i call  WORSE, and thats just the beginning *laughs*

Can see it breaking 10 million once it hits the millions of PS3 out there. Even going with a modest estimate, Sony has to be racking in the profits from the in game sales just from seeing the large percentage of people in the game with paid for items.

Oh my god, how can anyone over 12 consider this piece of childish nonsense beeing able to draw 100k subs?

BrainJunk Studios will be developing an MMOG based on the Twilight novel series. The game will allow players to play either a Human, Werewolf, or Vampire and explore an "open non-linear" world set around Forks, Washington.

The game will also feature a journal that allows players to teleport to different periods of time in order to experience the events found within.

The Examiner has interviewed head of software development on the project, Brandon Gardner, on the game, who described it as:

an open non-linear world set around Forks. I like the idea of letting players explore the world, and discover new amazing things that are not even covered in the book or the movie.

One really extremely crucial feature in the game engine that was licensed for the game is unlimited world streaming, and this feature allows for the game to go in an open, non-linear direction.

The game will be closely based to both Twilight and Midnight Sun allowing the player to play, and experience the story from either Bella’s or Edward’s perspective.

I’m thinking of including New Moon into the project as well. I really think it’s important to allow players to experience being human, vampire, or phasing into a werewolf.

Go here for the game's official website.

the current amount of information on the given site gives the mathematical term "convergence to zero" a new meaning :)

I bought VG awhile back and didn't like it  in the least. I've been hearing from many people for months now of just how good VG has become. I have my doubts because SOE is a terrible company and I wish very bad things on most of the people that work there for shoveling such filth. Anyway, is Vanguard a good, quality RPG? If so, how are the populations on the main servers?

hm

not so easy to "answer" because anything is so subjective, so i give you just my thoughts

  1. i have never played SWG but many veteran players told me SOE killed the game and i found their explanations trustworthy
  2. SOE might not be the worst company because at least they have some proffessional staff to maintain and/or develop games
  3. considering companies like ncsoft and considering the crap they produce my potential anger against SOE declines :)
  4. think of high hyped bullshit/hoax companies of the of the past=DnL and present=ncsoft/aion-??? -> what will remain of this stuff if the hard market rules set in ? :)
what did remain of the WoW KILLERS=AoC, WAR, ... ???
  5. i found much interresting stuff in my first few days of the vanguard trial so that i will try it out un til the end and decide then if i subscribe it as my new 2nd game:)

So I have been on a long and mighty quest to come up with a ''perfect'' name for my MMORPG Characters, in relation to their race, game lore etc. And to be quite frank, It doesn't exist. No matter what kind of name I come up with, I can always find a flaw with It, no matter what It is, however subtle or large. On the other hand, many names I can find something that I like about them, but there is the duality of It having a flaw.

For quite a while now I find our character names are a very important aspect of us as players, and I no longer consider them an afterthought.

Now sure, there are names that are more out of place, and of low quality in regards to effort of thought put into them, there relation to the games lore and characters race aswell as the overall style, sound and pronounceability of the name. Now to be honest, while we can all say there are names that are more fitting and names that do not belong or are ''lame'',just remember It is two sides of the same coin baby.

Names, the judgement of names, ''right'' or ''wrong'' names, out of place names, are all based off our own individual ideas. I do not believe there is a right or wrong style of choice of name for our characters, merely a set of ideas that creates a reality of right or wrong for each of us as individuals. For the immersion RP gamer, names that do not fit with the lore, race or overall game world atmosphere could be deemed as wrong, stupid or incorrect. For those with a sense of humor, names that are out of place are perfectly suitable. Those who are lighthearted and easygoing, names don't really matter as long as they are not total jibberish or offend the moral taste of.

So remember my friends, next time you go judging someone by their name, or think there is such a thing as superior names and terrible ones, just remember, It is two sides of the same fence. We should treat each other as human beings, with honor, respect and love.

Any name can be considered Godly or total garbage, It is in the eye of the beholder.

hm

i have met character-names like

  1. "holzkuh" (this is german and means wood-cow)
  2. "radioactiveman"
  3. "bananenbrot" (again german means banana-bread)
  4. and other nonsense ....

my generel feelings:

  1. i cannot respect someone who makes a complete idiot of himself.
  2. I cannot think of joining a guild who accepts such stupidity which shows no respect for the game and any taste in particular.

just my 5 cents on the topic :)

After that some of us started playing WOW (I think that was in Oct 2004 or was it Nov 2004) anyway those of use that didn't have the money to play WOW started playing Project Entropia. It was a F2P game that you could also cash out at any point and make real money out of it. I was new to the MMO world and didn't know that much about it then( not that I do now LOL). I did like the character creation in that game, I think it was one of the best to date that I have seen. But it was my first F2P game and I think it left a bad taste in my mouth for those types of games. So after reading most of the new posts about F2P games I started thinking about this game and was just wondering what ever happened to it and if anyone remembers it?

this bullshit is now called entropia universe you find that crap here http://www.entropiauniverse.com

BTW: THIS is definitely NOT free to play *laughs*. it is well known for THE real money game in the world! reading a newspaper or  using google will help you *smiles*

Since it's free, I can have fun without feeling like it's been a huge investment, and the quality is high enough that I feel like it's worthwhile to play. I was always a little intimidated by other mmorpgs because it seemed like such a big investment, but now I can have fun playing and take my time to explore the world without getting scared. Anyone else want to share their experiences with the game after playing other types of computer or video games?

ok here is my opinion:

i checked it out for a day and was completely shocked what a crap one of the so called higher regarded microtransaction games is!

oh i have a question if you dont mind:

how can you tell the "quality is high" if you "have never really been into mmorpgs" , so that you hav not so much to compare ? :)
