i play - and in the past played in any game i played so far - only one single character.

i want to be inside an emmersive world were i "am" actually this character and feel part of the world, so i had never the desire to setup additional accounts.

at the time  ultima online 2 (and after that downfall in the WHISH forum) has been developed i voted for the 1 char per acount limit :)

the discussion is not about a "favourable review" of aion, it is about telling us that aion is the best mmorpg that has ever been developed.

THIS is exactely what many feel is so much offside that the whole credit of this site is questioned.

Considering the mass produced pro ncsoft stuff this same "reviewer" has published, its understandable that there is a healthy discussion!

PS: until now i have not seen the "reviewer" to join the discussion and explain the rating more detailed to us -> why?

 

Maybe because he doesnt feel that he as to explain his opinion about the game he reviewed to a group of haters QQ'ing a bout Aion being the highest rated review on this site.

or maybe, like some other poster already pointed out, he needs to grow some balls.

As for number one, I would say that after playing many, many MMOs and Aion to level 36, that Aion certainly does not deserve the best rating out of any MMO. It is a ridiculous claim by even the biggest fans of this game. However, this reviewer has chosen to give the game the best rating an MMO has ever received on this site.

 

This brings up a serious question about how credible this reviewer is. There are really three options.

 

1. He was completely unaware about how MMORPG.COMs ratings were delivered in the past and gave his own personal rating. This would tell me that he is completely out of the loop when it comes to what this site offers in general when it comes to reviews. He is possibly very young. Or possibly very new. This is unacceptable for any site that wants to consider it's site credible.

 

2. He thinks this is the greatest MMO of all time. This is a real possibility. However, based on him saying that it is basically everything we have seen before, I do not believe this is true.

 

3. He is a shill for the developing company. (I would rarely ever even think this is a serious option, but after reviewing the various reviews he has done for the game for various sites, it's hard to deny there is nothing there). 

 

These are 3 very depressing options for me personally. I have basically been a lurker on this site up till this point. But I have to say that this review is embarrassing for this site and it has really given me perspective on how much responsibility this particular site would like to accept for it's reviews. Which is going to end up causing me to move on to others at this point.

this "review" reads like a payed? fanboi advertisement rather than a real review.

the "reviewer" does not join the conversation and explains to us all why this game is the best mmorpg released up to the current point in time!

this guy needs to grow some balls, as some other poster already stated, if he thinks this is the highest development in mmorpg-development he should say so.

skimming through the large ammount of pro aion/ncsoft stuff this "reviewer" has mass produced, this "review" is not only close to meaningless its counter-productive to the game as a whole!

That little part of my mind conjures up vague images of pulse-pounding adventures, desperate touch and go fights, exploring an unknown world, and other good stuff.

Alright, let me get to the main part of the post. I made a barbarian and loaded into the game. Some guy (npc) gave me a rusty ax and told me where to go. I had no real choice because there was only one place I could go. I suppose this conveniently eliminates any chance that I might be too stupid to find my way. So off I go, following the yellow brick road...er...whatever.

Oh, look, barrels and boxes along the side of the road. Whack 'em and money falls out. Um...what? Who the f--k would leave money lying around in a barrel on the side of a road? And why didn't those NPCs get pissed off at me when I whacked the barrel right in front of them and took the money which was presumably theirs?

Oh, crap, old roleplaying instincts and common sense are messing me up again. Sometimes I forget that I'm in candyland. Ok, I told myself, just whack the pinatas and take the candy...er...money..and shut up. So I did and continued on my way to see this npc I was told to find.

"I'm off to see the wizard, the wonderfull wizard of Oz", I sang to myself as I followed the road collecting candy...er..money.

Very quickly I found the wiz...er...the npc. "Blah, blah, blah follow me", she said. Okie dokey.

Now at this point I'm in a dungeon, right? Dungeons are supposed to be scary places filled with dangerous creatures, right? Hey, the npc said so and she wouldn't lie, right? But you know what? It wasn't scary and the creatures weren't dangerous. It was just whackity whackity whack and they all fall down.

A new song came to mind and I hummed it as I slaughtered the hapless, helpless creatures. "Ring around the rosie, pockets full of posies, ashes, ashes, you all fall down." I felt kind of sorry for the poor things but I guess I was expected to kill them so I did.

When we got done with this dungeon the gal (npc) who led me through it had a reward for me. Oh look, it's a firey ax!

Oooooo, shiney! It's all firey and stuff!

Really? A flaming ax? Right out of the gate? Oh, wait...I'm in candyland, sometimes I forget.

Ok, so then I was in a village. It was the typical sort of thing where quest giving npc's stand around with neon signs over their heads. They all wanted to tell me where to go for some reason. I guess I must look stupid. So they gently told me where to go and sent me off with a pat on the head.

Yay! Adventure!

So I did some more dungeons....whackity whackity whack...."Ashes, ashes, you all fall down."

Going through those dungeons there was never a moment of trepidation on my part. Never for one second did I think to myself, "Hmm, this could be dangerous." And even if I had died I'm pretty sure I wouldn't lose anything so what is there to be afraid of even if the creatures could hurt me. I suppose they make games that way so as not to hurt anyones' feelings. I mean, you wouldn't want some little kid to get his ass handed to him and NOT feel like the worlds greatest hero, right?

/sigh...oh, sorry...I mean, um...WEEE FUN! I'M A HERO, I'M A HERO! LOOK AT ME MOMMY, I'M A HERO!

And each time I finished a dungeon/quest a nice npc gave me some more candy. Oooooo, shiney!

Well, I could go on with this but I'm sure you all get the picture. This is just another example of where we are with mmorpgs today. We're not in dark, dangerous worlds full of real adventure. No, we're in Candyland.

 

so you think this is somhow special and related to D&D?

you can enter every newbie zone in almost every other game and you might expierience the same.

NO, you are wrong here. considering the 18 pages of this thread there is definitely an annyoing grind. i do not se 18 pages of a grind related thread in any other game so far.

thats the point. its like in lineage 2 (the first and last game i tried fron ncsoft):

they have proven to not beeing able (or willing) to come to terms with botters and gold sellers regardless wether they use gameguard or not!

after reading through the posts of this thread i think i would have liked the pre CU SWG. The skill tree some posters mentioned here remind me of UO2 wich unfortunately never happened after i wanted it so much.

i have never tried SWG, but seeing nearly all sandbox/skill-based games going down or away makes me feel unhappy.

but alas, ncsoft did not get to terms with botters and goldsellers in lineage2 (the worst thing i ever tried) and here they do it no better.

Much like myself most of those players are busy playing... not coming to the forums... this is my first trip to MMORPG forums in some time I stop in once in a while as I have for 6 years.

Everything you said WOULD be true if you put the amazing "IMO" in there. Instead you displayed your opinion as fact or the opinion of everyone which is most certainly is not. All MMO's are a THEME PARK... it's simply how you look at it. All mmo's cater to a certain playerbase... People cried I WANT CHANGE! Darkfall came out and it failed... That Chronicles of Spellborn.,.. failed and pretty much every mmo since eq2 and wow failed if you listened to people on the forums. Yet each of you have a game in mind that isn't fail even if someone else on the interweb forums says it does.
