I know this is obvious to most of us old timers but I figured i'd dash the dreams of the newbies that think a AAA sandbox will ever release.
People want to be a hero in a mmorpg, in a sandbox your this insignificant little nothing skilling up to be a even better nothing. Kind of like real life. Not many will pay for that type of simulation... Now you know.

You must never have ever played a sandbox game to think that that is even how sandbox games are.

Here is the correct answer: Because no company has gotten it right yet and the big names don't wanna take the chance. The best mmo and top selling mmo of all time will be a sandbox mmo. All we have to do is wait until the right person gets told how to make a sandbox properly, and makes it.

What do you have to do to have a chance at one of these keys?

Because the few who have tried made shitty games and the big corporate types see that and think that means the whole idea of sandbox is faulty.

The only sandbox to ever really get it right was plagued to death with bugs and an all around garbage code base. It can be done, I have a few in my head alone that could compete with WoW. We just gotta wait and hope to get lucky.

OP - Your big mistake..... was in not simply deleting the email ,and ignoring they even sent  it afterwards.
Think of it as an email offerring you the "free chance to stick a fork in your own eye".

Did that found it more fun than trying to play STO.

Thanks everyone. I`ll move onto something else.

Because you couldn't figure out how to install a game? rofl, alrighty.

Make sure you download the demo client, not the regular client like I did. To get the demo access on your account you have to download and install the DEMO client. At the bottom left of the page the email link sends you to it has to links to the demo client.

Now I know why MMORPGs have gotten progressively worse since the first gens. It's not longer a scene for hardcore rpg nerds, it's a scene for popular hip socialites.

Trolling is a myth put forth by people who wish to stifle opinions they disagree with.
I have been banned for that myth several times.
Forums are for discussion, even if they are baiting posts in nature, they trigger discussion which is the whole point of a forum like this IMO.
And in the end, if a post really annoys someone, they are free to not read it or even put the person on ignore.
Guess I'm just trolling here.

Well said. I think the reporting process is flawed here, as clearly - only one complaint (because you can't report something that has alreeady been reported) is enough to result in a warning or ban.
Clearly in MMORPG's eyes - trolling is any post which prompts someone to report it as trolling.

Wow, that's.. so Orwellian. It's disgusting in it's oppressiveness. A discussion board where you have to walk on egg shells with your own statements is a useless discussion board.

No offense to mmorpg.com, I love the place, but I have a deep-seated hatred of the state that heavy moderation leads too.

i'v played a few mmos (WoW, AoC, Aion, War, DF)  and, a few months back, i was bored so decided to try the free trial since i keep hearing and reading all about how good Lotro is.
i am a fan of Lord of the rings. i'v red the books, watched the movies, the cartoons, so i figured why not try the game?
my experience was not long lived. first the character selecion was pretty uggly. i looked at the character modles and i did not like what i saw plain and simple. anyways i figured well maybe it gets better once i actually play. i got into the game and started walking arround, i did not like how my character moved or any of the fighting animations (Aion has far better combat animation).
Looking arround the world was far from beautifull, even at highest settings it fell far short of games like Aion or AoC which are graphycly amazing. now i should point out that i opted for the "download wile playing" option for the free trial so i'm aware the graphycs options were restricted. needless to say i didn't play for more then a few hours before logging off for good. i just coudn't get into the game at all. the whole game felt a lot like War but graphicly not even close (and i consider War mediocre at best).
What exactly do people find that is so good in this game? why is it rated so high?
this is not a flame post, on the contrary i'm seriously trying to figure this out what i'm missing here.

You mean to tell me that I just wasted all that time reading all the text of someone who bases a game solely on graphics? The opinions of people who care about graphics don't even matter! You could have given me a warning or something, man!

Good. "I quit" posts are annoying. Just because you have an opinion, doesn't mean you have to share it. If you don't like a game, don't play it.

But then haters won't have anything to point to as "proof."

Ever tried... not reading them?  Works a treat.

But then fanbois won't have anything to bitch about.

If you are using a hand held controller to play an mmorpg then one of two things sucks. Your pvp skill or your mmo.

You make a f2p item shop game, and put a $15 limit per month per account on that item shop, and I'll play it.

My question: How likely is a game dev to do this? My vote: not a chance in hell.

The only people who prefer f2p over p2p are people with a bunch of disposable income who enjoy beating people more than then enjoy a challenge.

Remember Brucie from GTA 4? He prefers f2p.

Shadowbane. End of story. Anyone who disagrees either never played it or pussied out before really getting into it.

As much as I hate WoW and what WoW has done to MMORPGs, it is the best MMO ever made.

SO FAR!

I haven't given up hope that another good mmo will one day be made.

The people in charge of this game are idiots. Why is there even a time constraint on a freaking MMO? Do these people detest the idea of making money or something?

Having to see in giant letters...

"PVP FAIL!!!"

on top of a Shadowbane screen shot every damned time I come to this site is an absolute disgrace to the greatest pvp ever to grace the world of MMORPGs. Shadowbane was an absolute success in every aspect other than graphics and engine quality. It was the developers who failed.

The game was VERY hard, and VERY unforgiving, that means that the vast majority of people who tried the game left immediately screaming failure. Those of us that stuck with it were rewarded with the only mmo made so far to feature real pvp.

Then, it was taken away from us by a garbage company (ubisoft) wanting to focus on the kiddy gamer market (consoles) and what do we get for our suffering? We get people from the majority that failed at Shadowbane getting the right to plaster their biased, uneducated slander about something VERY near and dear to our hearts all over the front page of our favorite MMORPG website.

Thanks MMORPG.com, thanks.

EDIT: There is probably way too much QQ in this post, but dammnit, when you live constantly in an ocean of people who call you a fool because THEY were too shortsighted to see the one and only MMO that has succeeded in what every online RPG since the fist mud has tried and failed to, and then see crap like this, it hurts.

Sorry, but if you can honestly mention Shadowbane and "pvp fail" in the same freaking article, then you have absolutly no idea what you are talking about. All it means is that you were one of the people too ignorant to understand Shadowbane, who left without giving it a decent try because of the steep learning curve and unforgiving world.

Shadowbane did NOT fail, it was by far the best mmo foundation ever laid. Shadowbane was a groundbreaking success in every single aspect other than graphics and engine quality. Shadowbane did not fail, the people in charge of Shadowbane failed.

We are but a handful of months away from Shadowbane's relaunch now, and it will be better than ever. Maybe now that people are finally starting to realize the absolute pointlessness of modern day cookie cutter mmos, they will give a REAL mmo a second chance.

If the game had been true to the IP it would be an enormous undertaking.
Think about it. Each station would need it's own mini-game with content.
Now multiply that by the different ways players would want to play each station.
Now add the skill trees and the changes each would make to overall play.
The mind starts to bend under the strain.

It wouldn't be all that hard. I know EXACTLY how to make a Star Trek mmo that fits the IP perfectly and would be fun as hell, and would be everything ST fans have always wanted, and wouldn't be any harder to make than any other modern MMO.

I only got about two more years till I get my CS degree and get started on the path that leads me to the head of such a game. Just wait, it WILL happen. :P

I don't if I quite qualify as a trekkie, but I am a fan of the Star Trek universe. Obviously different people have different complaints about the game, but I think it's fair to say that several of us are unhappy because we do not feel that the devs are trying as hard as they could be to stick as close to the cannon as possible. One of the devs was quoted in an interview as saying something along the lines of that the most important thing for them was gameplay and ”fun”, with sticking to the IP a close second.
Tman5 summed up ”our” position quite nicely in another thread:
As to the fun vs IP argument: I think IP should come first, fun second.  Because if the IP itself isn't already fun , why bother with a game in the first place?  If you put someone else's concept of "fun" first, the IP just becomes paint.  Star Trek is more than paint.   That is the concern of those of us who are skeptical of this effort.
As for the part about coming around, I can only speak for myself, but I fully intend to give the game a try before making a final decision. I know that it will not be my dream Star Trek game, but I still hope it will be fun to play nonetheless.

This Tman5 is right. When it comes to IP vs fun, I've always said; "Umm, are you trying to say that our IP isn't fun already? Are you arrogantly assuming that we have been sitting around watching Star Trek all these years going; "Ya know, this is... OKAY, but it could be a lot better."? No, we are Star Trek fans because we actually LIKE Star Trek."

It's like when the new movie came out. I was like; "Do you honestly think we've been sitting around all these years watching Star Trek and thinking; "This is cool and all, but it would be a lot better with more explosions and motorcycles!"?"

Though, I did eventually watch the new Star Trek and enjoyed the hell out of it. :P

That's a great analogy!

Thanks, I'm proud of that one, lol.

Anyway, to answer the second part of your question, come around? I'm already on board. It's Star Trek ffs, of course I'll give it a whirl. I may be very disappointed that it doesn't seem to be being developed as awesomely as I would have had it developed, but still, I'll give it a go.
