Oh and for pose balls you'll need an animation script inside them so it will run when someone "sits" on them.

Nah, not everyone makes sexual material. I don't, I make cute things for the tiny avatars mainly or I make some furniture.  Eventually I'll get around to making some clothing for a regular avatar also, but being a rpg'er myself, I lean to the fantasy items or things you wouldn't have or wear IRL.

There is a huge market for the newbies that come in and just want to try out the virtual sex scene or the clubs, etc. So a lot of people will make things targeting them. It does seem just about everyone gravitates to those areas when they first enter SL. I think it's because they are the more visible and more highly advertised places. 

Personally I enjoy the fantasy themed sims, victorian themed sims, or Japanese themed sims the most. There's even an anime themed sim.

The problem is that the media is hyping the sexual content in SL, even though there are many that don't have anything to do with that.

Plus the other people that are looking for a traditional MMO with the quests and hack/slash RPG are not going to be happy in SL unless they want to make their own RPG game in there. No, SL is not a "game" in the traditional sense of a prefab game in a box. It's really a virtual world where you have to be the one creating your avatar/toon/character to what you want it to be, not what a game designer dictates. It's only limited to a person's imagination on what you can do there. It's disjointed looking because it's entirely made by the players. So, no you will not have a uniformed look and feel to it that you get with a prefab game. You'll get somewhat that by going to a private sim or island where the player that owns that island makes it into their vision. 

So in short, it's the players that make everything in there which will always mean somebody is going to make something sexual. It's human nature to go that route.

Yes, you can make a Jedi Order or whatever else Star Wars like. But in order to do the things such as powers in other MMORPGs you need to learn or hire a scripter. Some players have already made a game in there called Dark Life that acts like a basic MMORPG. You would need to make your own robes through a photoshop progam and import the textures. Also make light sabers out prims. I think some people have made those already but not scripted to interact. People have made interactive weapons for PVP. There's a samurai sword game on Samurai Island someone made. It's all scripting, texturing and builiding. Learn how to do that and yes, you can do anything there.

I just compiled a long list of SL related sites on my *gasp* blog. I think there are many helpful sites in there and many more that will give people a better grasp of what to do or how to do things in SL. (Other than hopping on sex balls with escorts in the clubs. lol )

After reading a few posts in this forum on SL, I thought I should post this link for new users.
Wired Guide to Second Life and Foolish Frost's Guide for New Users.

Wired's guide is more of a travel guide for new people. It's not complete since this is an ever changing virtual world, but it's a place to start. Foolish Frost's guide is a big help with using the interface, making prim objects, what's in the inventory, how to pull things out, etc.

Like someone else mentioned on here; Second Life is not a MMORPG. The fun of this "game" is making things or buildings or clothing/armor/avatars. I came over to SL after playing Everquest for 7 years. I was wandered around thinking the place was rather boring at first. I started to play Tringo to make money. These days Tringo is not as popular as it once was. Then later on I finally started to make things and I make my Linden money by selling them now. The learning curve is high but reading the offlicial Second Life forums in the Content Creation area is a big help.

Looking at the Events Calendar is rather futile since it's awash with "yard sales" and "sexist whatever" contests. Forget those. Try the Wired Guide out first for looking around and exploring. Dark Life is player made RPG game, one of the very few there and it's very good. Based mainly on EQ. Another player made game is the Pot Healers in Numbukulla sim. It's based on the Myst series. That one is free to play with several freebies though out the game and a big freebie loot area at the end. Very nice build also.

Yes, there are of new people on there with crappy builds but they are still learning to build and those are on the Mainland sims. Mainland sims are a crap shoot for good builds but they do exists just harder to find. :)

I will admit this can be a giant 3d chat room if that is all you do and there a quite a few people that only socialize on there. But there is much more to do on there than just chat, it's the learning that takes some time and patience. I was lucky and had a friend teach me over a year ago. :) 

I hope those guides will help out people wanting to try out SL.

I will say again though, if you are looking for a typical MMORPG, don't bother with SL. It's not for you. If you are looking for something that you'll learn about 3d design and scripting, trying to tweak things and create things for fun. Then SL is deffinately for you.
