Who says we have to fight aganist him...? why not let players see the invasion first hand? And the invasion happened before the first dragon. As Elona returned from the brink of Nightfall and slowly rebuilt, Joko bided his time. In no less than sixty years after he had been freed, the undead lord of the Desolation, having learned from his past mistakes, rallied his undead army to its former power and marched into Vabbi. Instead of outrunning his supply lines (which had been his undoing the previous time), he instead dammed and diverted the Elon river, both supplying his desolate domain with precious water and simultaneously depriving Kourna and Vabbi of that same resource. Faced with a devastating drought and famine in Vabbi and northern Kourna, Vabbi surrendered to survive. Kourna and Istan soon followed.      This is from the WIki.

the story in Elona would be cool but it seems pretty stright forward. Joko goes and takes over everything and the Land is shut off due to the Dragons.

but again the way they could go about doing this story would be very cool.

"instanced zones: check"

It may be a personal preference thing, but I cannot believe most serious MMOers would consider instancing (outside of maybe raid instances) as a positive.  For me this is always a deal breaker.  I was playing EQ2 this past week and having fun with it until I had to pop out of an instanced dungeon and it gave me the choice of porting back to ("Frostsea or Frostsea 2"), my desire to continue died right there.  Open world instancing, I'll pass. A big part of an MMO for me is feeling like I am growing and helping players around me, and open world instancing kills this immersion factor.  I think the fact that STO has so much in common with SWTOR is a big reason why no one is gushing, and I am sure once the honeymoon is over, not many will be gushing over SWTOR either.

Have you played a game without any instancing?

like EQ 1 or FFXI or UO or DAOC (pre 2004 when they added in instances, one of the first games to do so)

It really hurts the game community to be competing for EVERY SINGLE MONSTER YOU SEE.

I remember having to wait 2 hours in line to kill a quest mob in EQ.

Yeah, its really game breaking and it makes me feel like I'm not in a real breathing world that there are portals in a fantasy game... Oh wait, I think sitting around waiting with 30 people for one monster to show up seems WAY more "realistic" doesn't it?  (haha)

Instancing is a necessary evil, sorry.

only in a traditional questing sense would instancing (outside of story based contant ) be nessessary. Which is something I am looking forward too in Guild Wars 2. I want to see if Anet can pull this off and see just how co-op we can make content and if we can push away from the "me me me me" that MMOs have become.

ON TOPIC: Downloading now I was waiting till i saw a decent review post F2P move. excited to see what is going on.

I love how people are so concerned about what they believe to be a lack of world pvp. it is as if people do not understand just how massive daoc rvr was and just how closely WvWvW is modeled after it.

that was really good. I hope you can continue.

Why do people think that this game, being B2P, will be able to contend (content-wise) with other MMOs? Take a look at the original GW... you paid for all new content. The game was released in April 2005... That following september they put in some free content that really should have been released with the game. April 2006, exactly 1 year after release, the game finally got some content/expansion which wasn't very well recieved, but boost their sales. Six months later on October 2006 they released another expansion that users expected to have more than it did, but it was better recieved than the previous expansion. 10 months later (August 2007) the final expansion was released and since then no new content has been added.

I just don't see how it's worth it. You may have gotten your money's worth, but the game has been dead and seen no content for over 4 years. Is it worth waiting so long for content? I can see how one may have an argument if they compared it to WoW who's content can take up to a year to come out, but there's games out there that push content as fast as every 1 to 2 months. And honestly IMO the lifespan of the original GW (a little over 2 years) is pretty bad and makes me feel like any time devoted to the game would soon be wasted.

okay let me get  this....

1." you paid for all new content"are you trying to say that there is any bit of content that you do not pay for in a P2P game? becuase that is false. I have played Guild Wars for over 5 years now. I have spent less then 200 dollars on it. In subs alone I would have paid around 900 dollars for those 5 years. All while recieving weekly patches that do not drop servers and I am able to play even while they are patching the game server side, thus allowing me to always be able to play the game. The game now has am amazing amount of content that keeps me coming back.

2."The game was released in April 2005... 10 months later (August 2007) the final expansion was released and since then no new content has been added."  Look. I do not know what you expected from Factions or NIghtfall, But what i recieved was a well done PvP expansion that allowed for more players to get in on the action, they didnt have to have the right build or be in a strong guild. They could PvP when they wanted to. Factions added 2 maps (Jade Quarry and Fort Aspenwood) along with the PvP compaign which had five maps (totaling seven in all)  + a cool (yet short) PvE story line and two new classes which changed how PvE would work from then on.

With Nightfall it brought a PvE heavy expansion with the addition of Heroes. at the time you could only have three heroes, but this still helped a as the helped progress the story in NIghtfall and fill a spot in the party when you couldn't find anyone. The focus on PvE was able to happen from the extreme focus on PvP that factions was. Also the addition of two new classes helped give players more options for groups.

The final expansion Eye of the North, further added to the PvE content, expanding on the lore of the overall game, and helping to bridge GW to GW2. This added some of the hardest content to the game as well as develop a HARDMODE for all the content before it, thus revitalizing some of the older content and adding more of a challenge for the hardcore players.

SINCE THEN...we have had free content expansions in the form of the war in kyrta to further bridge the games as well as Embark Beach, plus a bonus mission pack to add to the lore. ohh and still like every week to two weeks we have balance changes and fixes. They have been a little busy for a while working on this new game.

3"I just don't see how it's worth it. You may have gotten your money's worth, but the game has been dead and seen no content for over 4 years" not dead at all, and we have seen new content. yeah its not an expansion BECAUSE ARENA NET is working on GW2. they even said it themselves that the next expansion was scraped because they wanted to do too much and were limited by the guild wars 1 engine.

4"I can see how one may have an argument if they compared it to WoW who's content can take up to a year to come out, but there's games out there that push content as fast as every 1 to 2 months. And honestly IMO the lifespan of the original GW (a little over 2 years) is pretty bad and makes me feel like any time devoted to the game would soon be wasted."Well the life span of the game is much longer then two years as it is still running (trust me i played for an hour today I know it is still up). How would your time be wasted by playing Guild wars as compared to any other game? Oh wait those other games don't give you rewards for playing them that move on to the next game. The fact that the hall of momuments exists its nothing short of awesome. My character in Guild Wars will be remembered into Guild wars2 and the titles I earned from the titles in the first game will be with me till the end of guild wars 2. SO in fact your time is wasted playing any other game because the rewards will die with it. Plus the fact that Arenanet said themselves that they will keep guild wars running as long as people are playing it.

Good post though.

OR...focus on real end game content. make things to do not just dungeons and raids.

As much as I am sure this has been brought up, GW2 has its story, DE, mini games, Dungeons, PvP, WvWvW and crafting. ALL at max level.

In fact all of this is through the game. there is not a quest "rat race" to run. In fact Anet has had problem when they bring in testsers because the testers didnt know what to do because there wasnt an NPC guiding them.

Remember when you started a new MMO and you had to ask people where to go/what to do. The good old days will never be back. unless companies like Anet try and break the model. its sad when the MMORPG loses both the MMO and the RPG aspect.

wait...is MMOExposed replying in a thread he made? almost deserves a sticky

Planetside 2 in second (because I would rather pay a sub than microtrans)

also I think GW2 and Archeage will be 2013, so I'm not getting too excited about them yet, but no doubt will later

further out, im interested in what zenimax online are working on and world of darkness.

sleepers might be Dominus and DF2

One i'm not looking forward too is WH40K, I mean a WH40K game with PVE!!! as the main focus and 2 lumped together factions because "wow has 2 factions"

guild wars will be 2012..based on recent Anet blogs

too bad the real problem with the game is the engine they built it on....This is the major downfall for a lot of other MMOs...if the gameplay becomes limited by what the engine has to offer, then none of these problem can or will be fixed...

The Hero Engine is just not the right fit for a SW MMO

Shadowbane and SWG had some crazy stuff go on due to guilds.

Sounds like either Jade Empire or Baldur's Gate. Either one would be cool

Can't imagine it being BG, then again everything is possible.

I feel that any touching of Baldur's Gate would ruin some of that magic...again i doubt it will be BG...but i also dont know how much forgotten realms they can use

the teleporting is a way of messing with the mind of the enemies....thinking you are one place then BAM...you are in another.

I'll agree that the PvE is top notch... but there is zero galactic PvP system in place.

Others have also said that you do not come across the other faction until later in the game, so there really is not much non-BG PVP before that -- in that you are not going to be bumping into an enemy player until into your 20's.

Is that not the case?   And I am refering to encountering and being able to engage an enemy player in the open, say while you happen to be questing, like you can in WoW.

It's actually very similar to early days DaoC, if you think about it.  You didn't really pvp until you hit max level and headed out into the frontiers.  Although, there are of course the usual BGs you can hit at earlier levels.  But the world pvp fun is not going to happen until level 50.

hmm.....i remeber my days in thid and molvick.......pretty extreme PvP in there..hell Lion's Den was full of action....sure woring on MLs and RPs in 50 was the true form of DAoC PvP..but saying you didnt PvP till max is simply wrong..

IN FACT having an XP off feature allowed me to keep my arms in thid , as well as my scout.......so i will say that you may not have...not I loved the BGs in DAoC and they were perfect steping stones to 50 RvR

I've written nothing short of a book on this site about my love for all that SWG was for the years I played it.  It was not a perfect game, often far from it, but it did something right that has been forgotten in modern MMO development.  SWG handed us an amazing universe and the tools to build our own story.  With those things, we created amazing communities, and adventures for years.  For many who loved the game, the problems and shortcomings of the game didn't matter all that much, because we were making our own content anyway.

In light of all the negative chatter SWTOR is getting now that people are playing it, I think what the pre-NGE SWG game stood for is more important than ever.  We need to return to MMO games that are virtual worlds.  Living, breathing worlds that in and of themselves tell a story, and let the players adventure in their own way.  SWTOR is the 'themepark' mindset taken to its extreme and look what we have.  It's an MMO that makes gameplay second to story.  It might have sounded good on paper, but in practice it isn't working for many people.

RIP Star Wars Galaxies, and the past players of my favorite servers:  Bria and Intrepid.

*tear*   those who wandered the planets in Tempest...I miss you. In SWG i never had to do any quests or go to talk to any people..hell i barly had to leave tatooine....the expanse of space called to me though....its rought to see this one go down in flames, i knew it was happening, and all we as SWG lovers can do is wait for EMU

I have no problem with Themeparks...but Star Wars should never be confined.

All I know is it's going to be tough pulling me away from this.  It's a blast.  And it's not even released yet.  I don't know what else the industry can do to make it even better.  An MMO is an MMO.  Either it captivates the audiance, is fun, and appealing or  it becomes F2P with an item mall and thrown in the 5 dollar bin at wallmart.  Either way, I'm so glad I found this game.  I'm so tired of the Elves, gnomes, dwarves, warrior, mage, type MMOS.

that jedi knight tank and sage ranged dps caster is really breaking the mold here...

Some great questions were asked and even greater responses. The one thing that worries me is End Game. I know they want the whole game to be that, but lets be real. There needs to be some meat when your max level. Dungeons is a good step but players will need some other things to keep their attention. Hopefully the dungeons and their difficulty is high enough that they can last.

ohh yeah dungeons with 3 ways to go through them in explorable mode...PvP that will hopefully bring back some DAoC style excitment, minigames, crafting, rare DEs , and all zone that can scale you down so all content in the game is avaible to a single character....

no after max level, everyone will be board....better add in a 3 dungeon grind that makes you waste weeks of your time getting the last pieve of gear so you can able to.....grind for your next set of gear so you can....grind for the max level gear...

i play games for fun not for another job

sucks for you guys as i was the first poster on these fourms...so I know i have my invite

Kidding of course.

"ohhh my big shot hero" =] love you roman
