"Quit playing in 2005" - Enough said. |

This is the one major thing that WoW did to the MMO community that I can't stand. Previous to WoW the amount of "asshats" was a very small number in comparison to now.
Now we have a few million teeny bopper, Bieber fans who act like monkey's because parents don't watch intently what their kids are doing on their computers. You know 98% of them wouldn't be playing online if their parents knew 1/4 of what they say or how they act. There's also that anonymity factor. Everyone can be a tough guy sitting comfortably behind a computer monitor knowing full and well that nobody will see their true self. For a kid, that's a pretty powerful thing. Hell, that's powerful for any age that isn't happy with their real life.
The best thing we can do for them AND us is utilize the ignore feature. If enough of us partake in it's usage, sooner or later those "asshats" will realize they can't get much done without others.

Simply stated... Anyone that says the graphics in this game suck, or aren't that good are running older systems / PCs.
There's only one real problem with the graphics at this point, and that's the fact that their FSAA algorithm is a little off. What this means, in a nut shell, Every visual in the game gets sampled 2-4 times, every time. It's like you going to an all you can eat buffet and having 4 of everything at the same time. Even people like me running cutting edge enthusiast systems, can't run the game with 4x Super (Smooth Edges works fine, but as soon as you hit multiple SS you can see something isn't quite right) Sampling enabled. (and I'm running 2x GTX580 hydros) This is a known problem, and is being looked at by developers. Even without the SS enabled, if you've got your antiliasing stepped up the game looks beautiful.
That issue aside, even without SS at 4x the game still looks great. I do agree with some people that some of the character animations are a bit on the dull side, but that too is being looked at by the developers. I'm also under the impression that people using mobile GPU/CPUs are having issues, of which, are also being sorted by developers, as well as VGA manufacturers (driver end).
In the past, most MMO's were/are both CPU and GPU intensive depending on where you had your sliders at in video settings. RIFT is of a newer breed where 90% of the graphics abilities of the engine are GPU extensive. I, personally, wouldn't expect the best you can get, eye-candy wise, in this game unless you're running an Nvidia 400 series card (or ATI equivelant) or better. We're moving into a "new age" for graphics engines where the majority of the processing is going to be done on the GPU itself, and everything previous to the 200 series just won't perform well, if at all.
Some suggestions on video settings for people who simply can't upgrade right now: Turn OFF: Fullscreen FX, Shadows, Super Sampling. Keep your sliders on the low side for partical density, ground density, and view distances (all applicable sliders). |

This whole WoW clone thing is getting entirely too out of hand.
First of all, WoW is a clone of MANY other predecessors. Second of all, the majority of the people claiming anything to be a WoW clone is what we old schoolers refer to as the "WoW generation" a.k.a. the "asshat generation".
Is RIFT a WoW clone? Absolutely not. Are there similarities? Absolutely. Trion simply took successful aspects of other games, as well as not so successful aspects of other games and improved on them. I suppose in that respect, they are similar.
To say that RIFT is a "WoW Clone" is simply a lame little fanboy comment. Even if it WAS a clone, wouldn't you rather play WoW with far superior graphics?
RIFT is a surprisingly great game, and it's the smoothest, and cleanest beta I've seen in 20 years of gaming. Anyone who was around for the WoW beta will agree, it was nowhere near as well done. That fact, in itself, is enough to negate any "clone" claims.
(Yes, 20 years, I'm that old. My first MMO was on a college campus mainframe, and it was text based)
The first thing people have to do to truly appreciate, AND enjoy an MMO is enter the game with an open mind. If you enter a game with a pre-disposed attitude, you can pick apart any game out there. There is only so much that can be "different" when it comes to MMO's. There are several variables to this, a big one being mainstream technology. Do yourself a favor. Take advantage of the next beta (starts Friday at 10am PST) and see for yourself if you enjoy the game or not. Will it seem familiar? Yes. Will you recognize some features? Yes. Thanks to some familiar mechanics the learning curve is minimal, as far as basics go, but if you're going to excel at any given class, it will take some effort on your part. Is it something totally new and innovative? Not entirely, no, but what they've done with some other games ideas is very refreshing, and entertaining. |

Very well done all. Look forward to the next bash! |

Do Any Games Use An In Depth Skills System In The Way That Eve Does?
Jita (General) « EVE Online 4/25/09 12:36:13 AM
I've been playing MMO's since back before the 3D days. In comparison to EVE's depth of play, the only other game that I feel comes "really" close is an old-school game called Anarchy-Online. Sadly, it is now dated graphic wise, though there are plans to soon release a new DX engine for the game. This game has the same "deep" skillset that EVE has. While I'll agree UO has a rather vast system, AO is a bit more than that even. Anyone who ever played the game for a long period of time would probably agree.
Side Note: No, this does NOT apply to the freebie version. This pertains the game as a whole, including all expansions. The "Froob" version doesn't count. |

*sigh* Yes, an orc will always look like an "Orc". A Dwarf will always look like a "Dwarf", annnnnd so on. Logically, as time progresses, so does technology. DX10 with Vista is opening all sorts of new advancements with graphical rendering. So yes, anyone who doesn't think an Orc looks like an Orc, or a Dwarf looks like a Dwarf.... does have their head in the sand. (for lack of a better term in respect of the website). This is generally covered by saying they are the same, Genre. Yes, the game looks excellent. The mechanics, design, skills, classes, PvP system however won't be too comparable to WoW. OTHER than genre specific lore. I look forward to trying / playing the game. I was a little concerned when EA stepped in, but they are keeping to their word. They're allowing Mythic to go balls out, with a much larger wallet than Blizzard had to start with. That alone makes a difference, at that point it's all about the devs. .. |

However, if you take the time to read about WAR, you'll find a lot more available than just your typical sandbox grind. Then again, none of them are designed with the intention of people playing with a bed pan installed. .. |

ON TOPIC: Warhammer is nothing like WoW. Is it the same Genre? Yes. Warhammer has been around longer, and the devs have been working on warhammer since Blizzard started on WoW. At this point, it's all heresay, however when the game finally hits the shelves I can promise anyone who likes this Genre / style of game, will not be disappointed. A lot more time, money, and listening have gone into WAR. Deeper graphical quality, content, variables, mechanics, PvP, PvE, RvR, and the list goes on. Please stop saying WAR is a "WoW Clone". It's simply in the same Genre. From what I gather, in my personal opinion, for the more "in depth" players, WoW won't hold a candle to WAR. Same genre, totally different class, and far more interactive devs. CLONE = A group of identical genes, cells, or organisms derived from a single ancestor. |

Comparing DDO from Day 1, to now. I just gotta say... they're definately learning from mistakes, and not necessarily all their own. That, in itself, is very promising. |
