Glad you have fun. By all means, make the most out of the trial and see if you can still enjoy it.

I used to play the game for a while, and while it had some potential, they dropped the ball on too many key issues. Now, with EA strangleholding the game, and it's budget / staff all but squandered, there's little chance I see of this game ever becoming what it was supposed to be (and by now it's probably more cost effective to just make a new one).

I will say, though, that the first portion of the game (tier 1) can be an absolute blast. The real problems of the game don't really arise until after the trial (tiers 3 & 4), so be wary. If you can afford the money, it may be worth it. Otherwise you may want to hold out until 2010 / 2011. Should prove to be a better year for MMOs (knock on wood).

Well, i figure by the time i've played the heck out of the trial and buy the game for 20 bucks i'll have gotten a few months of enjoyment out of it which isn't too shabby for 20 bucks.

It's fine if you have money to burn, Grimey.

Free Trials abound.

Seriously. That was at the second time you tried to play this game and you didn't know *anything* about the game you were trying?

Anyway, good to see you had fun. Let us know how it works out for you.

No, I actually didn't know anything about the game.  I try to go into a game without knowing anything about it so I don't read negative reviews or read something that could turn me off of the game.  Had i read this was a PvP heavy game, I'd not have played it.  I'm not saying it's a great method for everyone but I like having a clean slate when I start a game so I can judge for myself what it's like.  Then if i find I like it then I'll start to read up on it more and learn more about it.  I didn't group with people until I'd known something about the game so i wasn't hurting anyone else with my stupidity so, i'm not sure why you had a problem with this method.

So i'd heard about WAR for a while and tried the trial quite a while back and thought it was the stupidest game ever.  I was even playing with a friend and it took us just a couple of hours to claim this a lost cause and give up.  Fast forward some year or so later and I thought since I was MMO'less for the third straight month I needed to find something to eat up my copious amounts of free time now available.  I looked for some free MMO's because, hell, one might be good when I ran across WAR and saw that it was doing an endless free trial.  I thought why not give it another shot and installed it.  The game started just like I remembered but due to the fact that I sometimes get busy and don't have time to play I don't think I got a great feel for the game the first time.  I still wasn't that impressed with the beginning but as I started playing a bit more (What option did i have at this point, i had no other MMO) I started to get into it.

So I had rolled a DoK and really did not pay attention the fact I had rolled a healer class and saw that I could kick the crap out of stuff so assumed i was a DPS. (I know it's not now so stop yelling HEAL ME DAMN IT!)  I started doing more quests and then stumbled upon "Public Quests".  I read up on it and started doing one by accident and let me tell you.  This is the most fun i've had in an MMO yet.  This is almost 6 years and probably 50 MMO's tried worth of history here.  Those things, were addictive.  To boot, i got loot! (Rhyming not on purpose but didn't change it either).  I teamed up with some people and got to meet some great folks.  They told me about scenarios but I shrugged it off "Pft, this is fun.  I don't care about no stinkin' scenarios".

So a couple days later I'm reading up on scenarios.  This is after a little RvR action so I didn't know what to expect as I thought that was the PvP area.  I was wrong.  There is more PvP.  I hate PvP.  I abhore it.  I quit Aion because of the PvP.  I quit WoW beacuse of the PvP.  I liked Guild Wars and FFXI because i didn't like PvP and GW had an option of just doing PvE and FFXI lacks all manner of PvP.  I ask in public "So is this game PvP heavy?"  I am assured it is essentially the game.  I put it off the list of buy but decided to try it anyways.  I hate hate hate hate PvP.

So there I was in a Scenario, loving the hell out of PvP.  I don't know why.  Maybe because of the sheer size of it?  15 vs. 15 and on a busy weekend it can be even more it seems.  I just sit in the back and spam cures to anyone i can possibly cure.  I run around, I do everything i can to keep my tanks alive.  THEY'RE FLANKING TO THE RIGHT!! COVER THE VALLEY!!  Yeah, I'm excited about the PvP finally and it's awesome.

So this is my first week review.  Overall the Tier 1 of this game is freakin' fantastic.  The Public Quests are awesome and have great payoffs.  I like that PvP is not forced in the PvE sections of the world (Looking at you Aion).  I just love everything in the game so far.  I'm not great at the game but i have been in some parties that lived through what we were trying to do so i know i at least did good enough.  It's a great game and am doing the free trial right now until after tuition is paid *shiver*.  Then i'm going to look into getting it.  Until then i'm going to make some more friends, learn more about the game and get my renown up (level 8 nearly).  All in all this is a definite buy so far.  I've been playing a week in the same little section of the world and am still having a blast so there is definitely some content so far.  Hope it keeps up.

Well, I've reported them in-game and I'm in que...estimated time 9.5 hours, if you are stuck, please recall or start a new character.

This is why i cancelled my sub already.  I'm sad not only because i've wasted 60 bucks (and probably sealing the fate on not buying Guild wars 2 beacuse of it) but i REALLY really like this game a lot.  I'm waiting a couple months though to give them time but if they let it go way of L2, i'll just try to sell a CE account with Head start bonuses.

they are committed to making this game great -- looking forward to being here a good long while.

I couldnt agree more. Ncsoft is a great company no matter what the haters say. Their the best company out right now IMO. And that included Blizz! lol If they continue to keep Aion running the way they have been we're all in for a great time.

Good on ya NCSOFT!!! :-)

People are leaving the game.  If they keep running Aion the way they are running it now, they're going to be without customers.

Gold Spam Gone!

Well, i've defended the game enough but the time came for me to cancel.  People saying they should wait to see how many people are staying after the first month.  That's ridiculous.  I would think they wouldn't do this because it's idiotic.  I just cancelled after i'd had enough of the gold spammers.  I'll wait a few months, come back, see if anything's changed and if not chalk it up as a lesson learned.  On a completely unrelated subject, anyone want to buy an account? LOL 24 Sorcerer, some other lowbies.  Anyone? Collectors Edition? Someone?

Sound like you are all complaining to much. It's a japanese Mmo have some paitents. I really have'nt heard any complaint on the asain gammer end. But internationaly I'm hearing way to much griping. Im sure they are work on something. Give it time and quit whing. And if your complaining about the graphics and textures. You might aswell quit playing games. If thats all you play for.

Well, unfortunately I have now contacted NCSoft about a refund i'm afraid.  Tonight was all i could take and just was the straw that broke the camels back.  I was out doing some quests when there were about 5 bots running around killing everything and i was having to compete against them.  I tried the commands to report, wouldn't work.  Couldn't file a petition.  Couldn't find a way to get ahold of a GM.  This is an egregious part of the game that I will not put up with.  If this was a free to play game i'd have quit long ago.  But i paid 60 bucks and they expect me to pay 15 dollars a month after.  That's not happening and I'm now contacting them to get a refund of the 60 dollars on the basis of misrepresentation of goods and services.  Failure to refund the money will lead to me and some others following up with a class action lawsuit.

The score isn't unreasonable, but I'd suggest 7/10 myself. It has some flaws and the linearity of the game and the increasing need to grind to progress weaken it a lot for me. Also there isn't really anything new here, this isn't the next generation of mmorpg that will change our perception of the genre and I didn't find it immersive. Long-term too I think players will react to it in a similar way to WAR, I don't think Western players really want a PvP heavy game, more a PvE heavy game that allow you to dip into PvP as much or as little as you want. Also, very long server queues at launch are really bad, players paid for head-starts and they wasted their money if they couldn't log in and play easily. Hard-core is always a straw dog in mmo discussion, a game is either good or it isn't.

I'm with you on the score.  i'd go 7/10 myself too maybe even 6/10 but it's a fun 6 to me.  It definitely has some flaws but it's nothing game breaking and I think it's things that will be ironed out in some updates.  Even though this game went through beta they have to release it into the wild so to speak and monitor how it is played and make changes accordingly.  This can take time.  I think, however, you miss the point of MMO's.  I cant think of one MMO i've played over the dozens i've played, that grinding wasn't required.  I do agree that the western world typically likes PvE but i find the PvP aspect fun which is coming from a guy who absolutely hates PvP.  And by hate i mean i HATE it.  I never liked it in any games as it just seemed boring as crap.  But i like that in the PvP zones you have to watch your back a little and pay attention.  And if you're in their zone the same goes.  I had one guy fly in and try to jump me just as 4 other friendlies were coming in and suddenly it went from ganking me to him getting pounded into the earth.  That sold me on PvP fast.  How a situation can turn in an instant.  The queues were annoying as hell.  No doubt but i've not run into a queue in days and they've gotten shorter.  The connection problems are getting fewer and further between too and again, it just takes time to iron out the bugs and details.

What to add but, yeah.  OP hit it dead on.  I'd like to say also, this is how you post a critique to a game folks.  I feel it is very objective and sounds like someone, like myself, who enjoys the game but feels there is much more that could be done to make this enjoyable.  The flying thing is what bugs me.  First, i didn't think i'd be getting wings at freakin' level 10.  To me that's pretty soon in the game and when you get the things you cant even fly in most places.  I can understand int he open world but why not make it where you can fly in the main cities at least.  This not being an option completely astounds me to even now.  It's a lot quicker than walking clear across Sanctum or paying to teleport across.

I've had two great moments so far.  i was walking on the sky bridge and i'm thinking it won't let me go off the side and not paying attention.  well, i'm on the one where you gotta wait for the little "Car" thing to take you to the other side and i'm on auto run when yikes, i go off the edge and im yelling "CRAP CRAP CRAP! WTH! CRAP CRAP!"  Was a lesson learned

Another was, i was doing a quest when it warped me to Asmodian territory.  Way up on a mountain.  I was supposed to just warp back but felt the need to explore.  So i climb down the mountain and *gasp* I see an Asmodian not paying attention.  So i debate and come to the conclusion, yeah, lets jump this mofo.  So i commence to casting and whipping his ass when 2 of his friends pop up and i'm now outnumbered.  Quickly i bind the one guy, sleep the other, stoneskin real quick then turn the other into a tree.  I then hammer the "teleport" button to get the hell out of there before someone could get me.  I thought it funny enough to laugh so hard as to not be able to breathe right.  It was just gut reaction to incapacitate them asap and bounce.  Just was funny that i warped standing infront of a guy i turned into a tree.

Figured i wasn't alone in this but this was funny OP.

I'm a FFXI player and i've logged into it 3 times since beta went down and just went "ok, lemme just check to make sure they didn't put it back up.  Nope not up"

Gave up on FFXI as just don't find it interesting so i'm playing Flight Simulator X.  I am hoping to complete a transatlantic voyage tonight by going through Canada, Alaska, Soviet Union, Soviet Union, Soviet Union (big freakin' country), Germany, then seeing if I can get a cessna across the ocean.

This seems all stupid.  I'm not sure why they would do this.  I heard it's only if you change your information for players already signed up and paying but i can tell you, they cut off my account because of some secured 3-d whatever crap and my card doesn't support it, i'll be looking into legal actions.  They implement something that allows us to not play something we put this kind of time and money into and basically say "Fuck you" if we try to fix the problem.  I can understand they want people to play XIV but they're getting rid of customers too soon before even the last expansion is coming out.  At least implement this just a couple of months before XIV.  This is stuipd and i can guarantee that if they do this crap for XIV i will not, under any circumstances be playing it.  Not like i'm happy with what i hear about it now anyways.

I heard about this but that it wouldn't affect existing customers unless they changed their billing information.  Did you change it?

Bottom line, as with all betas, this one as well offers but a glimpse of the potential the game has to offer in the long run. People are supposed to be able to decide, given the beta info, on whether they like the game enough to make the initial purchase or not.

Unfortunately everyone think this is what Betas are for.  Beta's are not a lengthy trial of the game.  It is to Beta test the game and report bugs.

Beta Test: A software version released to a limited population of users for functionality and bug test evaluation before the final release to the general user base.

But yeah, this is an evolution compared to spending a considerable part of your budget on pain killers that you never really needed to end up dying of overdose...

I was with ya all the way up to this part.  It was at this point when i said "huh?!"  How exactly did kids overdosing on pain killers work its way into this conversation?

Anyways, i was looking at the game (on the website) and i too sort of got the "Free game (that you must buy things for" vibe from them.  I agree with the others that a game is made to make money but I really dislike cash shops that basically become a requirement to play the game.  It's along the lines of "Get a brand new Mercedes for free! Oh, the tires are 8,000 dollars each.  Holy crap you want an engine too? Walk this way, lets talk addons".  What good is a free game when you're paying more then you would a subscription game with no cashshop.  That's basically how i come to the conclusion of if i want to play a free MMO.  "Would i pay 15 bucks a month to play this".  If so, that becomes my monthly budget for the game.

I saw that was giving away beta keys so decided to look at the games website and the game really doesn't look all that great.  It's hard to tell from trailers posted on the site but even they don't look that great.  I mean, i know game developers want their games to look awesome and great and powerful and "hard hitting" but was all the really fast cuts and "screen shaking" necessary?  Seriously?  The first thing i noticed was "I'm not going to be able to see what the hell is going on because my laptop is going to shake into the floor from this game".  I think they need to calm down the "action" of the game a bit in the videos as the only game play one showed nothing of value (in my opinion).  I'm holding off on signing up but seems this one is going to be a pass.

When i first started up Aion beta it felt SO like an asian grinder but i started picking up that it was like WoW but as i got to know the game more i found it's similar to both but nothing like either.  Something i've always found lacking in almost any MMO i've ever played in is story.  To me a game isn't "Just go level and fight PvP".  I play MMO's to be immersed into an environment that feels like I'm not just running around and doing absolutely nothing but that i'm following a story and a plot in the game.  Maybe I'm alone but a game MUST have a story for me to be remotely interested in it.  WoW failed BIG time to me with that in that the quests just seemed a means to an end.  Not like i was actually doing something worthwhile.  Asian Grindcores feel the same way.  Aion even in Beta seems to ahve put together a nice little story (i'm only level 18 at the moment mind you) that feels like i'm part of something.

The game, like any MMO, can be what you make of it.  The fact that something is hard and time consuming does not make it any less worthwhile to do.  You want to complain about crafting, go try Final Fantasy XI for a few months and you'll understand frustration.  I've not gotten into the crafting part of Aion yet (infact, i dont know if it's even in the beta or not) as i've really not had much time to play but crafting in any game should be ridiculously difficult to level if it's going to earn people money.  If it was easy, EVERYONE would do it and then it would just be pointless then.

I have to mention something too about a statement you made. "However if you are looking at the game this subjectively and critically just go find another game."  I think this is a poor way to address it.  I like the English voice overs on the CutScenes but i like the voices now when casting and such.  Just because i would rather have those than the English voices does not mean i am being too critical.  It's just my preference and dismissing someone who has one different than yours, i think, is wrong.  I very much plan on keeping them as Japanese voices when the English ones are introduced.  It adds to the game for me just as much as the gameplay, stories, quests, adventuring, graphics, and music.

So I'm starting out, and I want to play a Warrior, and a Samurai/Warrior later on, 'cause I love anything that wields Katanas. But I do have some questions...

1. Is there a "best city" to start out in? I was told to pick up a great axe ASAP as a warrior, so maybe there's a possibilty say, Windurst vendors, don't carry that. Just asking anyway.

2. The quest to become a Samurai probably isn't soloable at 30. What job-quests ARE soloable at 30?

3. As I am starting out fresh and don't know a soul, what's the best way to make money? Should I worry about professions/crafting right away, wait til 10~20, or not do it at all?

What server are you on? Perhaps someone here can assist you.  I play on Bismarck and Pandemonium.  My main is on Pandy and could do a lot more.

If not, is their a quick safe way I can get to bastok from sandoria, or is the only way running there?

If you are on Pandemonium or Bismarck i can help you out to get there.
