I admit that being able to attack anyone anywhere anytime and being able to steal their items, mounts, houses and whatever else as harsh and unforgiving. But to just respawn seconds later is not that hardcore. Now im sure exactly sure how this works but I heard someone mention that lineage 2  added some feature where you made a special class and when you died playing as this class that was it, no respawn and your character was deleted.

I am in no way a fan of lineage 2 I was only using it as an example of something thats actually "hardcore". I mean whats more hardcore than your character being deleted after you die?

Having said that I am excited to see what darkfall brings to the table (if when it comes out). Im just tired of kids claiming it as hardcore when really, its not.

Ahh... the refreshing "Who is more Hardcore" thread.  It's been a few days since we've seen one of these.

I don't remember who said it in the last thread that was like this... but he's got you beat.

He was promoting that when your character dies your account is deleted.  If you want to play again you have to buy a new copy of the game...  NOW THAT IS HARDCORE!

Back in the day (hops in his "Back in the day time machine™") When the first Call of Duty came out, i played it non-stop.  Then, soon after United Offensive came out and so did some mods.  My least favorite was the "Bleed out" mod.  When I'd curse and scream about this people would say "But, it makes it realistic.  If you got shot in real war, you would bleed from it".  I would always say "I would bleed out but I'd not respawn 10 seconds later either.  I play this game to *not* be in reality.  Reality would be if you died in this game you had to go out and buy another copy and/or never be able to play it again."

I wish i'd done the same. I  bought the game for 50 bucks and spent 30 on subscriptions. There are times I wish I could hop back in and just play around but not worth the subscription hassel to do it.  Would have gotten 200 bucks out of it i'm sure quite easily and i rarely would play it. Guild Wars: A PvP focused game where the zones are all instanced (except cities and towns).  It has a PvE side as well but It was thrown in to appease PvE players.  However, the PvE in Guild Wars is great in my opinion.  You do not need to play the game for a month to be able to get some money, gear, and a lot (if not all) of the missions completed as well as quests and skills put together.  Guild Wars is for an extremely casual player who may have only a few hours a week to put into a game.  It has no monthly fee and again, very low level cap so playing just a few hours a week you can still get pretty far in the game.  Hardcore players may become bored with it quickly.  I was a hardcore player for 2 years and only lost interest when I found Final Fantasy XI.  I rarely did PvP despite owning a guild of around 200 people and we did do GvG.

Lord Of The Rings: Online:  I have not played this much recently.  I played the beta and bought it when it went public and played for a few months.  Problems plagued the game and i quicly got frustrated and bored of it.  I did the recent 5 Day Trial for returning players but it never did capture me in the time I got to play.  However, This game is different than Guild Wars in that most areas are not instanced.  The Game is also very PvE centric instead of PvP (The exact opposite of Guild Wars in this respect) and has a ton of quests, missions and even crafting (Guild Wars has no crafting period).  More time is needed to get much done in the game but not a great deal.  You can probably get by with about 10 hours a week as long as you could string 2-3 of thosehours together in one sitting.  The game is fairly easy to pick up and the graphics to it are stunning.  The plus to the game is that it can be as simplistic or complex as you make it.  When I played, making money was not a problem and even to this day is the only game where making money isn't a grind.  If you dedicate just a little time to it, the money can be made quite easily.  I'm not sure how this is accomlpished but kudos for this.

As you can see, the games are really only similar in genre only.  If you are looking for an easier, quicker game.  Guild Wars is the game to play.  If you want a more complex game (yet still fairly simple) then LotR is a good game.  It does have a monthly fee however, unlike Guild Wars but it has by far more content to make up for it.

Heh, Minidragon.  He's actually pretty cool with my dealings with him.  Of all people to have a god complex he never has (with me, others claim else wise but maybe they just preceived it as that).  Bismarck represent!

Minidragon still plays? I was on Bismarck FIVE years ago and I remember him.

yar, still does.  Probably could explain the massive amount of gil too lol.

I played this game from the day it released for about the next 2 years. Now i am comming back after all this time of playing alright mmos but not being quite as satisfied. I have been wondering if there are much people using DRG/NIN combo these days? I'm also looking for a good server that has 2k+ pleople on between 10pm-2am pacific timezone (doesnt have to be up around there aslong as it has a strong ah and community with people to party with at lower levels so it doesnt take a week to go from 14-30). I will also be starting a new character so any help anyone can give would be much appreciated. Also if anyone has a large linkshell that invites all levels and has a wide level range Please send an invite my way once i get in game.

I was also wondering if the server seraph was still highly populated and or do people still party in the sharingan maze? use to love that place :P. At this note i look forward to partying and playing as well as making friends with everyone on whichever server i do choose.  And if anyone i knew back in the day still knows my characters old name windrose im back...

Bismarck has a pretty strong population.  On weekends it's not difficult to see 2k+ steady.  During the week it's generally about 1700+.  If you're looking for 2k+ you're looking more along the lines of Odin which you cant even create a character there anymore.

I meant forum as in public speaking place not as in a Bulletin Board Forum.  You should ask in game on your server.  I'm on Pandy too.  What is your character name?  I'm fairly low level (just got subjob andchocobo) but I have 75SAM, 75RDM, played for 3 years on Bismarck so I am a fountain of knowledge.  Only 50% of it is guranteed to be of help and/or correct. =)

Wrong place.  Also, you didn't state a server so that kinda makes it hard for anyone to say "okay, i'll partner up".  It's generally best to solo if you're new so you can learn the jobs and then meet people in the game.  Having a set person to level with can be annoying as they may not have the same schedule as you or may not play as much.

I'm asking because I level in those areas more still and I want crystals :P My first server was Leviathan and those regions were pretty much all beastmen controlled when I left earlier this year.. There's been a lot of changes since then so I don't know if there's something else that impacts region control?!

Otherwise Bismark doesn't too bad either, thanks for your input. :)

Edit: Finally found the news page where this was announced! Looks like the transfer will happen January 7th. And Bismark is not on the list.. :(

Click Me for News

Yar, Bismarck isn't on the list because it's got a healthy population already.  I didn't know how far along you were or if you were going to just want to hold onto your character or not.  I guess the freebie thing you mean was the world transfer.  The reason that those servers were put as options are because they are the lower population servers.

The "noob" areas are never under beastman control as, well, a lot of new players as well as old exp in those areas.  Far more than you'd realize.

I see Pandamonium on there and is the only one I can speak of first hand.  Me and WSIMike/Shanree both play on there and I enjoy it.  I duo with a friend of mine from Bismarck and so far i've found people to be quite helpful in missions and such.  The one thing I noticed (granted, i've not met nearly everyone on this server) is that the "racial divide" seems to not be as prevelant than on Bismarck.  It could be because the population is lower and they cant just say "Japanese only" which i found to be a huge bonus.  One 64THF helped my friend and I do Windurst Mission 2-1.  I do not think this would ever happen on Bismarck and it was quite a breath of fresh air.

I've ran across probably 30-40 people and not one bad one yet.  Have even made friends on there.

I've seen many people recommend Odin for new players.

You surely haven't seen that on these message board.  Quite a few of us have tried to steer the new players as far away from Odin and the "More people = Best Server" mentality with almost a feverish approach.

Not sure what freebies you meant.  However, my only answers were already given so i'll not repeat.  Beastmen were answered too.

There are no RP LS's on Bismarck and I do not believe there are any on Pandamonium.  However, Bismarck is a strong server, Pandamonium has less population but is where my second home is and so far seems fairly decent.  I've not actually LFP much on it but when i did, was fruitless.  I was looking during the middle of the day on a Wednesday though so cant fault the game for that one really.

*ponders*  :D

In a sense they made it easier.  The quests and locations are all the same and the key drop rate is the same only the coffer chest pop rate is increased.  However, you can only pop 1 like every 30 minutes or so as to not feed the RMT's.  The pop rates are increased, but not your ability to pop the chest.  Make sense?

I think the eliteism is shrinking only in percentage but not in size.  More players are accepting of less than uber gear (like myself) than the Eliteist crowd is growing.  There are some that are hardcore "You gotta have this piece for this job" but my thing is, if you are in party and our party is killing well and getting good exp, i dont care if you're naked doing it.  As long as you are doing your job well enough to help and not hindering us, i really don't care how you're doing it.  I think a lot more people are coming to that.  However, I like to have the better gear, the +1 gear, just because it means i can do just that much more and have more options myself so i help my team eek out a little more damage or cure just a little bit better.  However, i have my line as well.  I understand sometimes having a subjob that's gimp, i've been there, but it should be kept to a minimum especially with so many things changed like higher exp for Easy Prey monsters, bonus exp from signet, Fields of Valor, things I never had, it should be kept to a bare minimum.

i have played WoW and War,

these have both made me feel like turning away from MMO's,

but i think final fantasy might be more of something i might like  because-

My main thing i like to do in MMO's(well all games actually) is fight some awesome bosses, not like the poor washed out, recoloured ones in WoW ,  and then the other thing i like about MMO's is how i can advance my character and work on it, not like regular games where you hit the last boss and are down with the game, i like working on my toon and playing with others online. and while i find pvp fun, its only something i like to do once in awhile, not alot.

The only thing im afriad of about this game is -

When your looking for a party A) about how long does it take to find one on a  med-high pop server, and B) while im looking for one, is there useful things i can be doing in the meantime?

thank you for your responses :D

I am going to say something you didn't want to hear. You mention the things i CANNOT stand about wow and gaming in general.

You sound like you just want to raid for gear.Superficial gaming my friend, you might as well stay in WOW.There is a lot of players in this game just as other games with the same mind set.I just HAVE to have that +1 elemental staff or i HAVE to have that Kraken club. There is a game in there outside of boss drops, players need to play it for fun and not treat it like an expedition to get the HOLY kraken club.

I have to say that, for the first time maybe, i disagree with ya Wiz.  As much as I love playing the game, leveling jobs, doing the missions (Zilart Missions are my fav storyline by far, ToAU a close second), I also try for that +1 elemental stave or that Kraken Club because it makes my ability to play my job better.  I mean, there are whole sections pretty much, of this game, where all you're doing it going for the loot. Dynamis, Nyzul Isle, Einherjar, and Salvage.  I think he actually sounded like the typical FFXI player.  Aren't we all working on our character to improve them?  Wether it be gear or combat skill or even levels.

This is probably true but hopefully they'll add some stuff about it so he/she can see if it's for them.  I attempt to do this when discussing Bismarck and Pandamonium.  Incase he wants a smaller population, he's got Pandy.  If he wants an extra medium population server, Bismarck.

BUT!! I am wondering if Fairy was the right choice, I am a junior beastmaster and would like to find a place where BST are not shunned on a regular basis. Fairy seems ok now, but back a few years back their economy was very high, also it seems many english players reside there?!

I'd like to know if there other servers you'd recommend, Pandemonium also looks good, people seem really friendly there. If anyone know of a good BST or solo centric shell also let me know.

And does anyone know WHEN these transfers will happen because I can't find that info anywhere for some silly reason. O.o

My Reccomendations are Pandamonium and Bismarck generally but I've noticed that Pandamonium population is fairly low.  I was around a bunch of people (higher levels) today and they said it is generally low which means that if you have a good reputation you have a much better shot at a party but means, less parties.  Less competition in farming but fewer people buying your stuff.  The exact opposites of a heavily populated server.  However, Bismarck seems to have grown some and it can rock about 2k during peak times and genearlly not below 1500.  I've found this to be in the "sweet spot" but it's getting a little high too.  I'm glad to know my server is rebounding (we had a large population drop when transfers were availabe).  Right now it's good, i'd reccomend it over any other server (it's my home server too) but other than that the only server i've played on is Titan and it seemed dead when i did.

I'm not quite sure why people keep pointing this out when they talk about FFXI or any MMO.  I don't consier killing mobs for exp grinding as much as leveling.  Maybe it's just throwing a different name on it but the connotation to "grinding" seems to be a bad one.  You have to do some repetitious activities but there is a reason for it.

You really don't want to rush into Summoner or Puppetmaster though, because Summoner is arguably one of the most tedious and expensive jobs, constantly having to defeat higher leveled avatars in tough fights just to use them, then again if you want money or need special items, and even again later on. It's border-line ridiculous.

Puppetmaster is very fun and my personal favorite job but it's also very expensive and not alot of people like PUPs, so you may have a rought time getting into a party. Above all though, just have fun. I think people take FFXI too seriously sometimes.

“The contents of this post do not necessarily reflect the views of MMORPG.com and its management.”

I agree with you on the BST part and PUP part, but Summoner is not tedious or expensive.  You don't constanly have to defeat avatars either.  You defeat them once to get them and then you go back through again to get Fenrir.  You don't need to defeat them more than twice.  Finding people to do this in a linkshell is generally fairly easy as a lot of people have to do them and just don't but I would reccomend another job before Summoner so you can make friends who can help you out with this.

I'd reccomend SAM or DRK.  At 60DRK you can /SAM for Meditate.  That with Absorb-TP is awesome stuff.

What server do you play on?  If you play on Bismarck or Pandamonium send me a message.  Shazamalicious on Bismarck or Oban on Pandamonium.  Or send one to Shanree on Pandamonium as he is always helpful too.

Well, I should start off by saying that I bought FFXI several months ago and was really impressed! The problem was that I had no idea what I was doing, or where I was going -- thus the game got very frustrating very fast despite my researching of the many, many guides for new players.

All-in-all, what I would like is to have a nice linkshell (If that's the equivalent of a guild - I think) on a nice server who can teach me the ropes so I can start becoming a functioning member of FFXI!

Thanks,

Ras

Welcome to Vana'Diel.  I can understand your frustration of this and was fortunate that i had a rl friend get me into the game so he was able to show me the ropes.  I will extend to you the offer I extend to any player (new or old) on here.  If you are on Bismarck or come to Bismarck I will help in showing you the ropes and giving you information.  I can give you a pearl to a great LS too that is almost always active, good people, and willing to help when possible (and given a heads up).

I also play on Pandamonium (i'd say with WSIMike/Shanree but alas, he's ditched me lately lol) and just started there so I am going through the "noob" levels again.  It's fun for me because i know what to do so the game goes along smoothly.  I'd reccomend Bismarck however as the population tends to be higher than Pandy lately and because I can actually offer assistance on there where on Pandy i can only lend advice and very little ph
