Guild Wars 2: ArenaNet Pulls Back the Curtain on PVP
News Discussion « General Discussion 8/17/11 1:05:31 PM
And that's the root of the issue here. GW has always been focused heavily on Storyline, and PvP has always been off by itself, segregated from the PvE gameworld. You will never see Open World PvP in Guild Wars for that primary reason. Heavily involved Storyline content and Open World PvP do not mix. You're just not going to be able to focus on the storyline when you have gank fests happening in the world, the focus shifts from experiencing the storyline and your place in it to survival, while trying to get tasks done to progress whatever story there might be. Having any time any where pvp pulls you out of the narrative of the story, and breaks immersion. With that said...it might be possible for them to create Open World PvP, but it would have to be in terms of a separate server, and not one single persistent world. Though, that might change the way they approach their focus on storyline....which I'm not in favor of. I think I like it separate like it is now....when they focus on PvE then that's all they have to focus on...they don't have to worry about how changes will impact PvP gameplay and vice versa. |

I still think they should get a chance...set their death count to 0 with a patch and those who want it can get it...now even easier. I got my LS as a result of an accidental deletion of my main character...after I deleted her I decided to remake her and go for survivor...which I eventually got. I personally dislike these kinds of changes...it creates divisions in the community...those who got it before, and those who got it after....and only serves to cause problems in the community. |

Dude...it's been that way since the start...don't even pretend this is something new to Guild Wars. Personally, I love the fact that I don't have to interact with the asshats out there, and since it's Free to Play, there are plenty of those. |

Love the changes to the heroes, already picked up some mercenary heroes in the store. Drunkard title is better...maybe I'll actually get it now with my stockpile. Survivor was never very hard...now they've made it even easier, and if I read the patch notes right, eventually everyone wiill have the title maxed. I personally don't like the change since I actually took the time to get it before the change. What I did wasn't incredibly difficult for most of it (farming an area over and over and over again for xp a loot), but I did finish it off with Elite Skill Capping, so there was some risk. If I were one of the people who got it early on (before the easy ways were found), I'd be rather pissed. Defender of Ascalon also got a boost with more quests to do...which I like, but again, I can see how people who got it before will be mad. I never really put a lot of time into my defender candidate...but now I should be able to get it. |

ArenaNet...by far...there's a reason I'm still playing Guild Wars and can't wait for Guild Wars 2....they do their job...and they do it RIGHT. |

Champions Online: Headed for Free to Play
News Discussion « General Discussion 10/26/10 9:58:38 AM
While I I haven't played CO in a while, it might be nice to check it out for free. What interests me more is the Gold level benefits, as they will likely be similar for STO when it goes F2P, and I have a lifetime account. It will happen, it's just a matter of time now.

2 of those are mine, one NA, and one EU...should have only gotten EU. I'm not paying anymore money (and I haven't since buying the copies of the game) to them until they fixed the seriously flawed game that currently exists. The frustration:fun ratio is too damn high right now...my time is better spent with other games where it's no where near as frustrating.

I'm sorry but you don't go to those lengths (especially for mining) unless you're in the RMT...which as far as I know is still forbidden in the game. This is a business...not gameplay. No different than the gold farmers in China. |

Lifer for STO here. I beta tested the game so I had played it before I decided to get it. I still enjoy it thoroughly. Does it take my power as a consumer away...yes in one form it does...but I still regularly buy the Cryptic store stuff as I want the full game experience...not a basic version. I'm sure a lot of lifers do the same...at varying degrees...some buy more some buy less. That still makes us customers. Another aspect being a lifetime subscriber affects is the weight of your word of mouth, especially if it is close to launch (but not right after launch, I'm talking within a month or so). When someone who's subscribing monthly quits a game they haven't invested a lot into the game...they don't have anymore time commitment to the game than 30 days or so....so if they quit...it's not a huge deal. A lifer has to play a certain amount of time to get their money's worth...for STO I have to play for about 18 months before my money will have been well spent. If I quit well before that time is up...that says something significant about the game. My opinion of the game is elevated because of what I have invested in the game. Now maybe you'll say my opinion of myself and my status in the community is inflated...fine...you think that, I don't care...but you know what I say is true. You know that when you hear a lifetime subscriber threatening to quit a game that you shouldn't take it lightly. That is an indication of a serious problem with the game...an indication that you should steer clear. The power of word of mouth...especially from a lifetime subscriber, is an important factor to consider. What about the lifers who bitched about the game immediately after launch? They fall in a special category...people who didn't know what they were getting into. They foolishly bought the game before they knew what they were getting. They are not committed to the game like I am committed to the game. They are not in it for the long haul...they just want their frickin refund. |

A person signing up to a forum for a game that interests them is a sucker? Umm...okaaay. Yes the population will go down as a result of their launch woes...but I would bet within the first year they'll gain back at least half of what they lose after the first month solely because at it's base it is a great game. Atari's the publisher...they definitely pushed it out the door early...not letting Cryptic actually finish the game first. I believe that Cryptic is a solid company. They know they have dug themselves in a hole...and they will work themselves out. They developed a great game...and it is unfinished...but what is there to start with is an excellent game. They just need to flesh it out more. They certainly have source content to work from, so coming up with that isn't as much of an issue like it is with most MMOs. Yeah I'm a bit of a fanboy when it comes to the game. I'm a fan of Cryptic...and I've loved Star Trek most of my life. The lifetime sub for me was a no-brainer. There are plenty like me as well...which will keep Cryptic going for a while. I'm taking my time...letting them work out the launch issues while I play Mass Effect 2. In a month or so when the irate 30 dayers leave I'll hop back in and it should be a very smooth experience. |

Stargate Worlds: Stargate Resistance Announced; Worlds Still Coming
News Discussion « General Discussion 12/13/09 9:15:59 AM
I think the real issue I have with this new game is the fact that they are delaying the game I want to play for a game that looks no better. They want to compete in the fps space with game that looks 4 or 5 years old. That was an issue I had with Stargate Worlds, and now it's been carried over to SG:R. I highly doubt even if it is polished that it will do as well as they hope it does...simply because it is not up to the same level of other AAA games of today. Both games are going for a realistic style. There is no attempt to make it stylized or non-realistic...and so the attempt at the realistic looking graphics seems to fall short. Basically, I don't think they can realistically compete at the level they way to compete at, and they are relying too heavily on the Stargate franchise to pull them through. |

Stargate Worlds: Wood: Resisting Stargate Resistance?
News Discussion « General Discussion 12/10/09 4:44:46 PM
I didn't like Champions...but then again I've lost interest in superhero stuff. As for STO...guess we'll have to agree to disagree that they are ruining it. Some aspects are certainly not in line with what I want to see...but I wouldn't say they are ruining it. |

Stargate Worlds: Wood: Resisting Stargate Resistance?
News Discussion « General Discussion 12/10/09 1:12:41 PM
I know I said it was a cash grab...and that's pretty much stating the obvious. There's a difference between a company developing a product and releasing said product on a predetermined schedule like most games do, and developing a product with assets from another game that is still in development for the sole purpose of getting some kind of ROI...ANY kind of ROI. The latter is a cash grab...the former is just normal business. SGW was normal business...Resistance is not. I expect that it will be a rushed product plagued with problems...and I expect that will doom SGW to cancellation. Having said that...I hope I am wrong. I want to see both games succeed...but I just don't expect them to at this point. Cheyenne...please feel free to surprise me...but at this point I'm hoping MGM pulls the license and goes with a company with a proven track record (ie the company, and not the individuals, has released a product)...because you're looking like Perpetual at this point. Here's hoping the same thing happens with SGW that happened to STO. |

Resistance sounds like a quick cash grab. Q1 2010 for a game we've never heard of? Yeah, definitely a cash grab. Cash from both the players who buy Resistance...and investors reassured by the release of an actual product. No doubt the money is needed for SGW to see the light of day. |

Stargate Worlds: Site Returns, Funding Issues Persist
News Discussion « General Discussion 10/15/09 11:52:23 PM
MGM...different development company please...they clearly shot their wad and can't be trusted with this great IP. I don't care if it means another company has to start over from scratch. I want to see Stargate in MMO form and I have no confidence in Cheyenne's ability to create the game and most importantly KEEP IT RUNNING. |
