MGM...different development company please...they clearly shot their wad and can't be trusted with this great IP. I don't care if it means another company has to start over from scratch. I want to see Stargate in MMO form and I have no confidence in Cheyenne's ability to create the game and most importantly KEEP IT RUNNING.

Great article. I found out that I don't like hardcore pvp. I like pvp games like: BF2, CoD4, UT3 because of the reason that I can jump into a game, frag some ppl, and walk away. I like the "no strings attached pvp". Call me shallow but I game for one reason, to have fun :)
Now my defintion of hardcore pvp is putting items/levels/time on the line every time you log in and play. To me this seems like to much drama for a video game and I don't see the value of putting in time and effort just to lose it all. It's kind of like gambling your paycheck with no payout. Now I can understand why this is fun for some people but it just isn't for me.

This is right where I stand. I like to have fun. Whether that means playing and enjoying a storyline or mindlessly bashing in some AI opponents...it's all about fun. I don't play games that aren't fun....and for me...putting the hurt on another human just isn't fun. I don't take enjoyment in knowing that because of me someone has to work back to the point before I met them. In other words, I don't take enjoyment in the suffering of other human beings.

No strings attached PvP is fine...I prefer PvE though most of the time since most of the time PvP is still about trying to make the other person suffer even if there are no strings attached. Whether it's trash talk or trying to humiliate someone in the community...it disgusts me. That's why I PvE most of the time...the AI is a dummy opponent I can take joy in making suffer all day long without any repercussions. I can beat them up to no end and they'll keep coming back for more. That is fun. It is an escape from real life...which is why I play games.

Those screenshots look awesome. Very happy to see a shot of a Klingon ship as well. Nice job Cryptic.
Everyone already know that the ship models will be able to be customized, so anyone complaining that they don't like a certain design on a ship needs to realize that these aren't the ONLY way your ship is going to look. Jeeze. And as for complaining about the NX registry being the same as on the other Starfleet ship release, give me a break. They've already stated that you'll be able to choose things like that yourself. I realize the ability to read is a tough one for some people on gaming boards but its amusing how blatantly ignorant some people are when it comes to POSTED facts.

(blatant exaggeration ahead)
Customize all you want but a piece of dog crap will still look like a piece of dog crap. Some people just don't like the cartoonish look. I have to admit...if these are screenshots (it's VERY hard to tell) then it looks cartoonish to me...which I hate. If it weren't for it being Star Trek I would have already written this off after seeing those.

There's a reason I never used up my 10 day WoW trial...I hated the graphics...I couldn't get past how cartoonish they looked. I'm not saying these shots are as cartoonish as WoW is...they aren't...but they are cartoonish. If they are staying with this look then they are going to have to have an amazing game to get me to play for any length of time. I would much rather they go with an EVE-like look than this look.

They seem to be keeping pretty quiet about their progress, but they do seem to be making it.
There's still a dearth of things like screenshots and some game information is still sketchy. But the game footage snippets look promising.

We're still probably 6 months away from release...probably 4-5 months away from dropping the beta NDA...until that happens they'll keep their lips shut just because they don't want to peak too early. Peak too early and you have to keep up the hype until you release...peak close enough to release and it's not a big task to keep people interested in your game.

It's my understanding that Beta will be officially starting on the 19th. That is when CME is supposed to be activating the beta accounts for the TTH premium members that were sent off this week (I'm one of them) as well as the first group of closed beta testers from the forums (I think Khatie said there were like 7000 or something).

LOL yeah...might want to check that link.

At least now there will be no mixing it up with ID softwares up and coming FPS called Fury.

Yeah at least that will never happen...not that it would've happened before this announcement...since well...the id game is called "Rage".

This whole concept was flawed to begin with...trying to make people pay for what is essentially a console fighter game. After the P2P failure it just kept going down hill since it probably was easily beat by dedicated fighter games.

NCSoft is becoming like the person who starts digging between the sofa cushions looking for change. I thought paid subscriptions were supposed to drive content and development. Now it seems like they are looking for any way to squeeze more money out of their player base. What's next? Power-leveling? Influence for sale? Special costumes that only those with money to burn can buy? Oh wait, they already did that one.
With no expansion on the horizon, just what are they adding these new "services" for? It's tacky and very, very said.

It's an option for those who want it. Don't want it? Don't use it. It's that simple. Clearly there is a market for this. And if it means the company can get more money from people willing to spend it...then so be it. Just means they will have more money for future projects. If you enjoy the game...why look down on it when they offer additional options. They aren't forcing anyone to pay anything more than they are already paying. With Champions Online and DC Online (even though, IMO it looks like a freaking joke) coming their subscriber base will no doubt take a hit. If them offering this kind of stuff to people who want it means they will be able to continue development with lower subscriber numbers...that's a great thing for the game.

IMO this is a good move. Good way for them to make a little more money without impacting the game a great deal. Might cause a few people to just purchase their respecs instead of going through the process to earn them...but I don't think that will be too big of an issue.

Would be nice to see a way to completely redo the character...including powersets. That should be epic level though...meaning it takes a lot to earn. With powerset proliferation I'm sure there's plenty of people who would like to change a primary or secondary to one of the new ones to fit their character idea more...or simply for a change of pace.

Well I won't be able to make it but that's good that they are starting to have playable demos at Cons.

Wondering if they will be showing off Star Trek Online at all at GenCon. Considering they are showing off the first gameplay footage at the Star Trek Con in Vegas just a few days before, I would expect them to at least have some videos at GenCon.

"seemingly public spaces" and "public spaces" are two entirely different things. There are lots of "seemingly public spaces" on the internet, but all of them are run by private corporations or organizations who have every right to stomp all over your freedom of speech rights on their private site. Just like every business has the right to impose a behavior policy on you in their place of business, or have the police forcibly remove you from their property.

I honestly don't know of any US government run site that has a public forum. That is the only forum freedom of speech would likely be protected in...when the government comes into play and hosts a public forum.

Doesn't matter if the server is a foreign country or not...an entirely US based operation can still censor you into the next millennium if they want to. It's all about how they want to be perceived by the public. That's why a lot of companies are extremely loose on what they allow on their sites. They want to appear to the public to be a freedom of speech friendly forum...when in fact they can restrict that any time they want.

Eww....is that bunny hopping I see...please tell me that won't be a dominant part of the game. Please tell me there is some factor that will reduce the ability to bunny hop.

Honestly the more and more I look at this game the less I want to play it. My interest in this game is being replaced by my interest in APB.

Ok.. The background from the timer is taken from the article( the top picture). The article itself is old and worthless which is why I couldn't find the relation. I was looking in the wrong spot. Good find or whatever. I still don't think the timer is for ST:O. Maybe an Easter Egg.

Why would they hype it to compete with their current project? Its surely not a beta anouncement after only a few months. If it is the game hasn't changed much from PE's design.

Beta....lol no. It'll just be the announcement that they are developing it. As of right now there's no official word on who if anyone is developing it. This could just be Cryptic's way of hinting it to start the hype.

Why wouldn't they hype all the projects they are working on? They are in the business to make money...you don't get money unless you generate interest in your product. This is just the start of that.

The two games would be targeting the same general market, MMO's...but they target different niche markets within the larger MMO market. EVE Online and SWG would be direct competitors for STO...among other Sci-fi MMO's. For Champions Online the only direct competitor they have is City of Heroes/Villains as they are the only comic book MMO I know of.

With that magazine shot it pretty much confirms Cryptic is the STO developer or at least are tied to it in some way. That much is clear from the use of the image.

You know...it usually helps to post a link to said video. I'm getting nothing.

People arguing that this type of piracy doesn't cost the game industry money are kidding themselves. If the people playing on the pirate servers weren't playing on the pirate servers they'd either be playing on the official NCSoft servers...or they'd be playing another game. At some point a good chunk of the people playing on the pirate servers would be paying money to a legitimate company...so someone is losing money from at least a portion of the people playing on the free servers. Assuming all of them would eventually pay money is going a bit far I think as a smaller portion of the people playing on the servers are no doubt just cheap and wouldn't pay no matter what. But they have the right to make that claim...it is their IP after all.

Good luck to NCSoft...if you like the game pay for it...if not don't play it...simple as that.

Lineage 3 it's one of them as the president of NcSoft said in an early interview that they will setup a team this year to work for L3.
But what's the second one?

Stargate Worlds perhaps?
It's been announced yes, but they don't have a publisher yet (or haven't announced it)...and they are running on the U3 Engine.

Then again...the press release talks like they are games they would be developing in house...which wouldn't fit SGW since it is being developed by CME.

I like the women, but the guys look a bit too muscular in the arms. I think Goa'uld should be healthy looking and refined but not as brutish as these guys. Still early days until we see some renders though.

Just a few months....beta is due this summer...they are shooting for release in late 2008. They got their teaser trailer commercial running on the SciFi channel during new StarGate Atlantis episodes. In that you can see a Human, Jaffa, Asgard, and drone rendered. Don't know if it's actual in game footage but it should give you an idea of the style they are going for.

Concept art is just that...a concept...an idea...doesn't mean it will be exactly what is in game. They are presenting it just to give people an idea of some of the stuff they are coming up with.

Besides...why does it have to match or be similar to stuff found in the series? They have a galaxy to fill up with stuff...there's bound to be a hell of a lot we haven't seen and bound to be a lot they created from thin air. Everyone wants to talk about canon...they will be defining a lot of the canon in the Stargate Universe that simply could not be covered in the movies and series.

Goa'uld come in all different shapes and sizes...why wouldn't there be "brutish" Goa'uld? They are power hungry egomaniacs....why is it difficult to accept that they would take a muscular male as a host? If anything I would expect them to take hosts like that...simply because it would fit their ego.

For me...I like the look of the female on the left the most...to me she screams Goa'uld...she's got that attitude-laden look to her. The others...meh...don't like them as much.

The glow...they are obviously looking to expand on the "bling" they wear in the series.

This set of concept art is no doubt just one of the sets they've come up with for Goa'uld. Persoally I hope the character creation is extremely complex so we can create great looking Goa'uld that exude power and that egomaniac attitude. Or at least in game system of clothing to allow us to create a unique look. Of all the races I think they are the only one that really requires a unique look...

They announced the winners quite a while ago (like August 2007 or something). This announcement was simply that they will be including them in an upcoming update.

Also lag /= bug, lag = connection problems

exactly...lag does not mean a game is buggy as hell. This launch has actually been relatively bug free.

The only thing you mention that is a bug is the CTD...but that is by no means a rampant issue. Last time I experienced one was early in my beta experience...like 3 months ago. There are a few issues but I would not say it is buggy as hell...at least from my personal experience.

Just got done getting my Privateer to Rank 9. Love it so far. The best part to me in this game is you can actually use some serious strategy in the battles. Its unlike any other game I've ever played. I just got done playing eve (since i started this one). Eve, right click orbit, F1-F8...wait for the ship to blow up...POTBS is great, even if I'm outmanned and outgunned I could still win the battle by just being a better captain.
I got in a group with two Rank 21s and another rank 9 and we were having a blast doing the Red Tide Mission over and over. I think it may be the funnest group I've ever been in.
If you dont like the strategy I understand you hating this game because it takes forever to do a battle sometimes. Killing a single ship can take a while, but if your into real strategy and piloting I think this game is GREAT.
Avatar combat is nothing special so far but I dont really mind that. I do like how a rank 21 Captain (max level at the moment) is not so overpowered that a Rank 9 has no chance of beat them. This will be good in pvp and I cannot wait to try it out.

I gotta say I agree totally with this post. I had a similar experience last night with a group doing Red Tide. I had soloed that mission before...but with a group it was much more fun.

And I love the strategy involved...so much so that I'll probably be getting into at least port contention when launch comes...if not open sea pvp. Never thought I'd say that as I normally hate pvp. I just don't like the atmosphere pvp usually brings. The strategy involved with this game though is excellent and I have a feeling it brings a great aspect into pvp, something other games lack.

Yeah Avatar combat sucks right now....I have a feeling we'll see some improvements on that soon, but that's only half the game...the other half is fun as hell.

Sounds like the OP just failed to make sure his sub was properly canceled and is now trying to take it out on SOE by trashing other games they are invovled with.

I am by no means an SOE lover...I went through the whole SWG NGE disaster...I permanently closed three SWG accounts as a result of that. I have dealt with SOE with many of their games. I've been subscribed to SWG (as I said), Planetside, The Matrix Online, and shortly I will be subscribed to PotBS. Why do I trust them with my money again? Because SOE has screwed up once...and in that case they were the developer of the game (SWG). Planetside I just got tired of...not my cup of tea. MxO I got tired of...it just wasn't done properly. Not SOE's fault, and they are not the developer of this game.

The whole time with dealing with multiple games and multiple accounts I have never been improperly billed...not once. I have started new subscription...restarted old subscriptions....canceled old subscriptions...without a single problem. So take this as an isolated instance of someone (probably) screwing up on their own and trying to blame SOE for it.

Yes SOE screwed up big time with SWG...I still hate them for it...but other than that they have done business properly for me at least.
