Star Wars: The Old Republic: A "REAL" Honest Review.
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 12/03/11 9:51:09 AM
Hey, nice review op.
I was going to write up a similar review which I have done with most of the games I have tried in beta. No point now since you seem to have done a nice job and do a similar breakdown of things like me.
Although I think you rated things too high overall (i.e. I think SWTOR is a solid 8 to perhaps an 8.5)

I was semi-interested in this since I played NWN1 for over 3 years on the Online servers. Thenl I read the part that Cryptic is developing it. Honestly, for anyone dumb enough to actually spend money on this, I won't feel sorry for them. Cryptic is as close you can get to a MMO company that are scammers. I wouldn't trust them with anything or believe they will do anything close to doing it "right." |

Maybe it's just me, but the graphics look outdated, I mean this is 2011!
j/k. Really funny read, man. |

Yeah, I have to agree with your statement.
From looking around aaportal.net and youtube, everything looks great except the melee combat. When I see it on youtube, I literally start to fall asleep. The ship battles look cool though.
We will see how it goes. It's good to see newer games breaking the traditional "Theme Park" mold and trying new and innovative things. |

Great interview with Lord British

Really good interview. Perhaps it's just me, but could I listen to him talk about UO stories all day.
Good memories. |

Don't fall into the Chicken Little Syndrom of the "sky is falling."
Honestly, I don't see ganking being too bad come release. Tribal areas are completely safe atm, and they are quite big. And with the added craptastic combat system, I think most people are just going to stay in their tribal areas and craft and build up their towns.
Sure there will be a few skirmishes here and there with pkers vs crafters around the junk piles, but once a few of the nearby tribesmen come as reinforcements, the pkers will back off.
Currently, it's pretty bad because there has been so many wipes and server crashes, etc, no one is really building anything since it will just be wiped; hence, many people are just wandering around checking out their area. Also, since the main attraction currently is crafting and building and there is no point to doing that, many people are just bored and wandering around killing people. |

The past week was possibily the worst week to long on, with probably the majority of people not bothering to log on. The servers were being tested for stability and rollbacks, so they were being constantly taken down and forced down to recreate situations where a rollback (improper saves) would happen.
The lag was also on purpose, because when Release part Deux occured there was so much lag and it really messed up the server. This occured only when major lag hit the server, so Jordi wanted to recreate the lag so he could see the problems and fix it.
Now, if you read any of the posts in Announcements on the official web site, or read any of the threads talking about this in the Prelude section you would know, but you did not.
This tells me you are not an informed person, and quite frankly have no business making reviews. |

Long time MO supporter leaves the game and tells why!!

Interesting read, Thaeric.
You make some valid points. I didn't try MO, I learned my lesson with DF.
Like XBludX, I suggest trying Xsyon...perhaps not now, but in a few months you might be surprised. |

That's really the greater issue that these PvP whiners don't understand. You can't undo tribal warfare. Once, a system is in place and it goes live there is going to be tribal warfare. Now if something (exploit...unexpected "feature") occurs which people do that wasn't "planned" and tribes after tribes get conquered and months and hours of manhours of terraforming and construction are ruined....you can not "undo" this process besides a complete rollback.
Creating, impimenting, and testing a sound, secure, and robust tribal warfare system takes time, and planning. Most of the people (and I would say the majority of the Xsyon community) understand this. Most of the playerbase are probably in their late 20s to 30s and been around the days of UO, etc. They understand this, and have seen so many other games fail from rushed development in which the devs cave into forum demands not knowning what is involved. It's just "I want it now!" mentality.
For the PvPers that can't wait, I say just forget about this game for 6 months and then come back to it instead of QQing on the forums with really no idea what you are asking for (development and testing time that is involved). They really have no f-ing idea at all, and are truly quite ignorant and naive. |

Cool response. It seems that you really got what I wrote to your original thread. Like I stated before, you seem to have a cool head about it all, although I can see through your posts the fustration and dissapointment you are facing. Trust me, I have been there. I am not sure if you read my Xsyon Review a few weeks ago and saw what I posted about Darkfall, but I followed that game for over 4 years wondering and imagining only to be dissapointed.
What I learned was never to invest that kind of time or emotion and thought and wonder into a game ever again. It's a cynatical way of looking at things (perhaps life?), but I guess at the same time you won't be so greatly dissapointed that you miss out on some of the good things. I mean is $40 worth it for 2 and a half months of an interesting game world with a rich crafting and world building simulation. I would say, yes. Others would perhaps not, but I would say, since you already paid the money give it a try. It's actually quite fun. For how long? Can't tell you that, but I think it's worth it for the time already paid for.
Also, as stated earlier, idealism is really a killer. It's really for the Disney movies, reality is a lot more on the lines of comprimise. And even though I disagree with you on some to many points, I also fear and wonder where the combat system and tribal warfare will end up. Like you, I was drawn to the FFA model; however, unlike you I understand for the need for a "city building" mode initially (i.e. Prelude). I can wait the 6 months until tribal warfare comes in. If I don't like the model and they put in complete safe zones and there is no tribal warfare besides consensual, I will probably look elsewhere to spend my time. In the mean time, I will put faith in the devs to make the right decision, and enjoy the time till then. |

Well let me start off by saying, I can understand your concerns, and it's good that you aren't raging and keeping a cool head. However, some of your thought processes are flawed.
I think you are dishearted on some facts of what you thought Xsyon would be in your mind. So in actually, you are disappointed from your own idealistic process. Look, it will always, and I mean always be impossible to live up to ideals. Even your ideals can't live up to your ideals. If you thought Xsyon would be like Shadowbane, well that was your mistake not the devs fault. Xsyon is Xsyon. However you thought the game would be or think it should be, it won't be. That is the first fact that needs to be understood and excepted or you will never be happy.
Idealism is an impossible thing to live up to in a tangible element. Xsyon is the creation of Jordi's vision, his idealism. He never said I will make the perfect game for you personally. It is his. Sure he takes feedback from the forums, and tries to comprimise here and there, but ultimately he will not and can not make everyone happy. Understand what you want, someone else might not want. It's not up to you to decide the fate of the game and nor should it. If you want to make a game in your vision, then go for it, until then you are whining that Xsyon isn't what you thought it would be. So let me be clear so you understand. Xsyon is not your game, and it isn't the idealistic Nirvana. It's a game made by someone else's vision and trying to match his idealism, not yours.
And for the fact that you believe that the devs are making it up as they go. Sometimes that is how it goes, especially in the sandbox model. Many things are player driven and where that takes us in 6 months is uncertain. You might not agree with this, but that is how it goes. We have a base system and a frame work to go on. Will actual bills be used as currency or will the barter system prevail forever? Who knows? Will people make amazing structures and towns, or will people just get bored and just wander the wilderness attacking everything and everybody? No one knows? Will the major tribes break down and everyone will just go to homesteads? Who knows? How do you expect the devs to think 6 months ahead when, we the player base, don't even know what our actions will be in 6 months. I think Xsyon is great for this. It brings in Chaos Theory, because we, the people, are the agents of this. We can be unpredictable, and so with such a rich environment of almost anything can go, it's very hard to predict what will happen in 6 months. |

I think trading will be your best option. I hope you butchered that coyote, because it's bones might be something to trade for flint.
Also, don't be shy and ask in local. I rarely see help requests turned down in chat. People seem quite helpful...at least for now.
I usually solo in MMOs, but I found a good group of guys and I am enjoying the collective effort we are all doing. I would suggest doing that.

Originally posted by sn0wblind00 All that you wish for (which I am also looking forword to) will apparently happen after the Prelude phase which will last around 6 months. However, by that time probably all the good locations by the lake will be gone and one will either need to join an already existing tribe or create one in the mountains by a river. By that time I am also guessing the junk piles will be all gone, so it will be even harder to start off, but things like mines and farming will be implemented for resources. As for me, I am enjoying seeing the world and our tribe evolve. It has a charm to it which I like. Kind of reminds me of the game Civilization, but instead of the overseerer you are the characters in the game. Right now, it's the worker, lumberjack, etc. Regardless, the game is unique. I think we can all agree with that, even the haters |

Yeah, sounds good. Hit us up in game.
As for hunting, you are right there are some good hunting grounds near the tribe. I ran into a family of bears and called for back up. Shaggy came to help me and we killed about 6 bears in a row.

Yeah, I remember you. I am glad that the basket was helpful. I remember when I first started and had to struggle with just the default pack. It was a chore.
Well, you know where our tribe is. Come by, if you need an invite let me know. The tribe is Divided Allegiance. |

I am Canadian (i.e. US servers), and I am getting the same problem, so it's not just EU. Also, the web site for Rift has been down for a while now too. |
