I dont read these forums for Eve much, when I'm currently 'into' Eve I usually exlusivly use the official forums. But I quickly glanced over today and my thoughts where "whoa".. lots of thread of people trying to get into eve.. dont understand it... need help.. lose patience or whatever. So I thought i'd explain how I have recently got back into eve once again because, truth is, Ive been off and on eve for more years than Id care to count. I know a lot about eve have some great memories and experiences, but I could never really last for long before another game distracted me or I got bored.
So why is it different this time?... well I'd done my usual thing of re-subbing to check out the latest expansion. Now, I dont know about you but I have a regular Teamspeak server where I have friends that I know in real life. We all play different games and occasionally we will play the same game. Non of them are Eve players, they may have done a trial at once time before or whatever, not players that I would even bother trying to convince to play eve because of its 'complexity' But one of these friends... a pure RPG, typical 'wow' player of many years.... tried and played many mmo's and game, wouldnt consider himself 'hardcore' at all, not a "rocket scientist" is married, has lots of kids, suddenly told me that he had BOUGHT eve! I was a bit suprised by this, if im honest, not because I think he doesnt have the ability or determination to play a game like Eve but because he had tried eve before and many times said that he didnt like it. So, I just answer the odd question from him.. I didnt push him at all, if anything I explained things in a way that implied complexity and that he'd have to research it a bit himself. To my suprise he tells me that he's been using probes and doing exploration, he's been mining and manufacturing, playing the market... even been into worm holes, low sec... 0.0 and ran missions and even joined a corp! all in two weeks! I asked him why it was so different this time around?..... his answer was simple. Podcasts!.... like me he struugles to sleep at night and needs something to listen too, and started listening to random podcasts he found. This seems to have helped in a big way! So as my own feelings of bordom for eve started setting in I decded to follow his example and look for a pod cast to listen to.
I found this one, reccomended by CCP about solo pvp'ing, I've not really done much pvp I consider myself a noob at it, even with my very old accounts and deep isk pockets so I thought I'd check it out any way. https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=42133&find=unread This guy also has a you tube channel, after listening to the second podcast in the series I watched all the videos. My excitment and enthusiasm for Eve seems to have shot up a lot! I guess I too didnt really get somethings about Eve, especially pvp and im learning so much, joined a corp with one character and just have the other as a fun solo pvp roaming character... the difference a podcast has made is amazing! Now, Im not telling you that THIS podcast will help you, but that watching video's and listening to podcasts has helped me, a long time player.. re-discover eve, and it also helped a very young 'unlikley' player get into eve.
So if you WANT to get into eve but cant figure out how... or struggle or whatever, maybe the best option is to log off, and just spend some time watching videos or listening to pod casts.. on the way to work, or excersiing or.. in my case, before I go to bed. Things are falling into place and suddenly im starting to see things in colour, where before I saw grey. |

Now that you've played it, do you still think 100% voice is a great idea?
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 2/07/12 11:56:26 AM
Rather than asking if its a 'good idea' you have to ask if you would have preferd they paid for more devs instead of paying voice actors!
Voice over is something which should have come as an addition AFTER the game and ONLY if the game was successfull enough to warrant that expenditure of resource.

I hope Bioware doesn't cave to the number decline
General Discussion « Star Wars: The Old Republic 2/07/12 7:29:24 AM
They have a rediculous amount of money tied up on the investment of this game, it wont be going anywhere.
but It wont ever be the top mmo that people were expecting. Bioware just dont have the experience. |

Why isn't anyone gushing over this game?

Originally posted by AdamTM I dont disagree that it has improved and has more content... but your reaction is short term, it doesnt last. You cant play a game for a day or so then go raving about it on forums, you have to play it solid for a month. But I'll bet it wont even last you the week |

Originally posted by fony lol, yes. Apparently so ! Another MMO I saved myself from by not getting caught up in the hype by just waiting a month and seeing how it goes. You only have to wait a month and the truth comes out. Year or so later STO is still just as rubish, and a year from now SWTOR will still be rubish too. |

Its seems good at first, but after a few days you realise that your in a fishtank.
So much potential from this IP that crpytic screwed up just to make a fast buck.

Yeah, I know quite a lot of people who have done many trials, but never actually got stuck into the game until they played it with a friend or someone who can help them out.
Thinking back now, the only reason I got into it was because I had a buch of friends on teamspeak when I played guildwars, and they'd often talk about eve. So when I go into it I knew a lot of people already and they helped with a lot of advice and just answering noob questions. One thing is for sure, its best to actually talk to someone use voice comm's about eve, typing out explanations seems to cause confusion, or people easily forget, eve players enjoy talking about eve and have many tales to tell and many answers to quetions are not especially long or complicated but they do present you with a great deal of options and so the merits of each options will give rise to further questions. |

Originally posted by DoktorTeufel What you say makes no sense, Any vet worth his salt very rarly pays any money to play eve. You would also know that the last expansion was just about fixing those exact problems you mention. So, with respect, you dont appear to have any authority to speak on the subject and just dis-credit yourself. Even if they have lost 'some' subscribers over the past year.. over the year it will still have seen an increase on average, it hasnt actually gone backwards yet, and with the new expansion its picking up once more. CCP have indeed mistakes, but its still the only MMO where the CEO has stood up, admitted it, apolagised and then actually did something about it. You will never see that from Blizzard, Bioware, NCSoft, FunCom, SOE.
They messed up, they admited it, they fixed it... Eve carrys on like it has for 9 years. |

Why did TERA fail, and is there any hope of escaping that fate for its launch in the west?
General Discussion « TERA 1/21/12 3:17:44 PM
games succeed in korea dont succeed in the west, and games that succeed in the west dont succeed in korea.
Chances are, the reason it doesnt succeed in korea is because its too westernised, lol. Which is good news for us xD |

yea, people arnt interested in the amount of players because they are concerned there wont be anyone to play with... they are just using it as a way to measure it's health and making some pretty wild asumptions. Truth is, on average for the past 9 years population and subscribers has grown every single year... and there isnt a single other mmo that can claim that, and that alone is enough to determine its a completly different mmo that doesnt follow any patterns that others do. |

Its true that there has been a drop. But that drop as I said is only from bittervets. Actual new players to the game is still steady and always increasing.
Anyway, its single server.. with 30 thousand players online all the time, its not like your ever going to be short on people to interact with LOL |
|
|
If you can, I'd suggest setting aside more time to play initially.
Eve is completly different to your regular MMO, so there is a lot to get used to and a lot to learn, so try and make more time for it.. just to begin with! After a few weeks you'll know what you can do 'casually'
A friend of mine has recently got into Eve and suprisingly he loves to Mine!.. definatly a casual activity with enough interesting other activities to do (like exploration) for when you need something more exciting to do.
But as other posters have said, it really does help to play with at least one other person a friend, or even someone you know that might already play, or has played eve in the past. |

I think some veteran players maybe getting bored. But recently I've been running tutorial missions to fix my standings and in each system I went to I saw new players asking basic 'new player' kind of questions. This isnt a new thing either, every time I re-sub to Eve since starting some 7 years ago I always see new players. An mmo should really be judged on the new players it attracts as opposed to the old players it looses.. since everyone gets bored eventually.
I'd say Eve is definatly growing. and with people already getting bored of SWTOR , mmo players are starting to realise that RPG's are stuck in a rut and get boring quickly, Eve is completly different to an RPG so there does seem to be a bit of an influx of new players recently. |

I was going to wait a month and buy SWTOR, but more and more I see these comments on forums and directly from most of my friends.
Eve seems to be the only MMO alien enough and different enough to keep me interested. They say Eve is a game for older players too...hehe, so I think your maybe right about the age thing. |

Developing a game where every single NPC speaks audibly and the content is full of video sequences was bound to mean compromise in other area's
It makes you wonder how future expansions will be developed... seems to me like they would need to spend huge amounts of time just making new voice overs and new video sequences, compromising on mechanics, functions and game-play features. |

Originally posted by stayontarget Thats nonsense. Eve has had two expansion every year for years now, there hasnt been any complaint about 'no updates' the complaining was that Incarna was the first expansion where a PORTION of the community didnt like it, thus was coined the term 'bitter vets' because this complaint came mainly from Eve veterens, who only represent 20% of the entire eve community. CCP Turn that around in 6 months to produce what is generally regarded as one of its best expansions since Apocrypha. So your a bit mistaken about your facts and is actually evidence of how people twist things into pure nonsense. |

There is some mis-information here.
FW is not piracy. Its legal warfare. FW Does not spread to high-sec. Any war target entering enemy high-sec space is attacked by NPC ships.. you can survive for a short amount of time, but you wont be able to do anything practicle
To answer your question about RvB, yes its mostly High-sec based, but they are quite close to low-sec and sometimes when they are bored they will band together and go into low-sec or even 0.0
High-sec PvP is good to get used to the basics, like safe spots and following basic instructions from fleet commanders, also good to get used to fitting a ship for pvp (instead of PvE) However, the next natural step is low-sec and 0.0... its more 'real' pvp where your enemy will use everything they possibly can to kill.. no holding back... it is more frightening, but more fun :)
This is of course an option, but every player I know who has applied has had to wait weeks sometimes months to even get a reply, RvB is instant, but their 'training' is less structured.
