General: Top Ten Games That Should Be MMOs
News Discussion « General Discussion 4/29/09 1:17:49 PM
There are certain things that you need make up an mmo, while some of these games listed certainly have immersive quality that isn't enough. Two notable mentions I might also point out have some issues.
GTO? One of the most controversial game series ever and you want to give people the opportunity to live in it. No, no, no and ... no. Srsly.
An mmo is persistent, immersive and dynamic. It is consistently evolving and reinventing it self in modifications. You need a good frame for that in the foundation of the storyline and not a storyline that could potentially evolve out of control. That being said some of the suggestions by replies here seem much better suited imo for the job. Better yet there are some great fantasy novel series out there that would make awesome mmo games.

The way I see it mmorpg games have evolved but then something happend and that evolution became about new gimics rather than evolving quality. Then the rules of laying out an mmorpg set in and the newer gimics began to feel like newish things that were just plugged into the same frame. We now look at the past two years of new releases and I dont see any new quality worth mentioning. Some of them sure do look like they spent more money on hype than development. Promise them anything but give them only what you have to seems to have wiggled its way in as a rule of thumb. The obvious lesson here is that game company heads think we are stupid. I'm still looking for a game with quality graphics and animation, decent combat system that isnt more frustrating than fun and a large immersive world that feels like it belongs and responds to the story line rather than a setting for a bunch of npcs pacing around like ducks in a shooting gallery. Maybe it will never happen, I dont know.

Hero's Journey: Update on Hero Engine and Hero's Journey
News Discussion « General Discussion 4/03/09 6:11:20 AM
Thank you for this.
I know a lot of people [my self included] would be very happy if HJ got back into full time development. |

I have suspected for a long time ( I started watching the game 2 years ago) that HJ and its super slow development is a promo front for the Hero game dev engine. There may have been plans at some point to maybe see it though but I think it has served its purpose in promoting the game engine. They release some screenies and some concept art once or twice a year or so. Oh it also made an official list of vaporware awards this year ... along with duke nukem forever LOL.
As with a lot of companies they had lay offs not long ago [rumors from their own forums] so I cant see them putting much into it any time soon honestly. Its a shame too the ideas in the game had more potential than any others I have seen.

General: KingsIsle Reveals Self, Announces MMOs
News Discussion « General Discussion 4/30/08 9:11:18 AM
I think the ship on their web site is just their trademark personally, but who knows. I noticed they were hiring. I wonder how many emails they have received with questions sense the announcement went out LOL.I feel a twinge of that Vanguard era feeling. I hope this works out better. I hope they are basing their ideas on real experience in gaming too. So many of the newer games the last few years are buying into the accepted ideas of what gamers want and so many of those ideas are off base and please only a small portion of the audience. Here's to you Kingsisle. [raises an energy drink can] Winds at your back. |

The problem with the EULA agreement is this: Its complicated but in the end it says we ( the company) have all the rights and you ( the player) have none. You click yes and say you agree to that because if you do not you cant log in and play even though you have already paid for the service and committed months or even years of in game work to developing your characters. The EULA and other click to sign contracts that guard the gateway to virtual worlds are subject to change at the whim of the company and that is something you also agreed to in the EULA. If there were laws ( and there should be) that were made to control unreasonable agreements and contracts, then this would be a prime example of consumer abuse. We have become used to it but that does not mean that its ok. It is like this because there is little if any legal president to determine if consumer rights have been violated by said contracts, or even if the consumer has any rights at all. Perhaps some of our more cerebral gamer brothers and sisters should consider putting some explanation and complaints together in a way that those who have influence on laws could understand. This isn't something that companies will offer of good will. They exist for profit and nothing more. Believing in some kind of benevolence from an entity that has its birth in profit is the worst and most foolish kind of mythology. |

General: SOE Founds Scholarship For Female Dev
News Discussion « General Discussion 2/26/08 10:29:22 PM
Its true , things have not changed that much sense the 1950s. As a matter of fact women have lost some ground sense the male backlash of the 1990s. The kind of hate women remarks all along this thread shows it. It is not uncommon for scholarships to be given to young potentials where there is a deficit in a field. White males traditionally are first pick for companies because they will likely get along well with the current team because they are also male. What SOE is doing is simply taking advantage of the growing awareness that women are playing more and more. I have been in entire guilds consisting of women and met other women all the time in eq, eq2, wow , lotr. What SOE has become aware of is that more and more of their female players are speaking out in objection to forum trolls insisting that women do not play. Its simply a legitimate PR ploy and its only one candidate who is already in school for the gaming industry and will just get a leg up on her student loans that will cost at least twice as much. On another note it does not make the male player population or gaming industry look good with such a negative attitude toward women. Especially after the EA Mythic survey scandal last year where anyone filling out their survey who was not male and below a certain age was bumped from it saying they didn't need anymore information from them. |

I'm gonna have to agree with one of the other replies here and say the author has never played with real female gamers. Or didnt know when he did. Lets see I have been in MMORP gaming sense 2002 , Everquest, WoW, Everquest 2 and a list of beta testing on those and other games. Here is some of my experence on the issue at hand as a female gamer who plays female characters. I actually got treated worse than the gender benders, or *cough* certain kinds of rp ers or male characters. I didnt play the tease game so there was a tendancy to put me off once new guild members or members of a regular group found out I wasnt going to play "the game". I suppose If I had worked up a vocabulary of *tee hee*s and flirty responces that would have helped but considering how many personel tells trying to initiate suggestive conversatons I got when I wasnt being flirty ... well ... no, lol thats all I have to say about that. I'm only flirty with my husband and I kind of like it that way. Do I make pretty characters .. sure why would I want an avatar that isnt beautiful? Even in wow though you dont have to over expose your self that much if you dont want to. The tabards and shirts will cover any lacking armor in the right places if you want it to. I did do some experimenting on my own to see if there was a difference in gender treatment though and I actually found that when I played a male character (I tried this for a short time in both everquest and wow) I was actually treated better than when I played a female. I got a lot of statements that included the word "bro" and offered me lots of regrouping opportunities and gifts. I think the actual truth is that with many of the male players of these game they expect the female characters to be part of the intertainment and if you dont go along with that your not treated well. That being said I have a feeling that many of the gender benders are aware of that and are willing to play that game to get extra benefits from their fellow players. That does lend some validity to the OP, with regard to gender benders. Its important to note that many female gamers are not a part of this though and that what we are really about has not really been addressed by the gamer community IMO. Do we exist in significant numbers? Yes .. more than you might want to believe.
