You forgot:

Rift

-feels about 90% WoW

SWTOR

-Star Wars KOTOR (50%) + WoW (50%)

I've played both games for a fair amount of time. I'm not going to get in a big argument here; this is just the vibe I get when playing the games. I've played enough World of Warcraft that Rift is just too similar. Yea, the multi-specifializations are cool and so are the rifts, but to me they felt like features that could be added to WoW in an expansion (as in, it felt like I was playing a new WoW expansion). The fact that Rift (or even SWTOR) cant match the ambience, music, and character of WoW... I felt: why play this game when I can just play Warcraft?

SWTOR on the otherhand, feels a lot less like WoW. The biggest thing is the way they capture the Star Wars universe in the geography and in the story-oriented questing. It also just feels like a Bioware game because of the quest interactions (dialogue wheel, voice-overs). It takes a lot from WoW, far too much in my opinion, but its at least different enough that I feel like I'm playing a different game.

Why did I have to bring up WoW in here? Because its a common ground that we (for the most part) have all enjoyed and are just looking for a new game. In conclusion, I foresee myself lasting longer with TOR than with Rift because its (also) a great game thats different enough than World of Warcraft and it feels like Star Wars, which I am a big fan of.

I read the forums and I've played MMO's since they were just text based muds.  (I'm kind of old in gaming years).  Anyway, WoW took me by surprise.  I didn't think I would like it, but I really did.  The release was pretty smooth and the game throughout the years was fun.  They added content for PVP and PVE.

The TOR release was pretty smooth as well.  I liked the staged release.  I think long term this will be as successful as WoW.

Everyone keeps saying, well they don't have Rated Battlegrounds, or teams for Hutball.  They don't have full space combat, they don't have this or that etc...

I want all those things as well, but when you look at what this game actually released with it is alot.  The single player experience (Story line) is very well done.  The flashpoints are a blast.  PVP is good, they have good equipment and neat crafting system.  They tackled the aspect of allowing people to do content either solo or duo with companions.

It took years for WoW, EQ, EQ2 etc.. to put in some of their best content and I expect the same from TOR.

I'm having fun and maybe I will get bored in a few months, but then that next feature will be added and it will keep me coming back for more.

BTW, I loved UO the best out of all the games I ever played.  But, UO was the perfect game for a 23 year old smoking herb and working as an IT guy.  I wasn't married, didn't have kids or a ton of responsibility.  I smoked herb and played UO with my girlfriend and now my wife.  It would be real hard to compete in a game like that now.  I just don't have the same time to devote to that stuff, and I don't smoke herb anymore, so it would be much harder to mindlessly sit there and macro mining to raise str, or trap a nightmare to train swords etc...

When I retire, I hope there is a good sandbox game to play, but until then I'll take well done themeparks.

respect.

From a future perspective: the game might have sold more copies by doing it the traditional way.

However, they have a solid product with a lot of hype around it. While I think they're definitely taking a risk by trying something different, it says a lot about their confidence in the game. Its not like EA has never dealt with an MMO failure before... (so they certainly have more experience than any of the geniuses on this board).

Let's just see how this one plays out? I'll be enjoying myself in game with my preordered copy in a few minutes once the servers officially open up. For those of you buying the game tomorrow, good luck, although I doubt you'll need it as you'll be headed down sometime as early as possible tomorrow.

And for those of you who are not even playing the game or just don't like it; why do you even care? Go play something else, there are a lot of good games out.

Read thread title, blood pressure spiked, came in ready to flame.

AHH, what a relief, you're not a manchild. You guys should see the Bioware forums right now...!

This is when smart investors get excited about buying stock in Act-Blizz after it drops for a while.

Wow, apparently I'm not special - many people here also got in. It's gonna be a great weekend! Too bad I'm so busy with school I can't play 16 hours a day..... fjls;jkflasjkld

Add an option for Never.....?

looks OP

Your voice is really annoying, and seeing the character creation, and levels 1 and 2 isn't really all  that valuable. Useful when the game came out, perhaps... but not 2 years later.

Why is everybody so excited about this article? He has only pointed out the obvious. Incomplete, prematurely released MMO's are bad and we're sick of it. This has been the general attitude among MMO gamers for years.

It really bothers me when people refer to their "data".

It seens shady, yes, but if you log into BNET from the Worldofwarcraft website and go to Acccount, you can actually claim 7 days of free game time.

Now, I'm sure some of these emails are fake as well and they've strategically been released at the same time Blizz is actually offering the promotion. So be careful and never sign into your account through an email's link.

TL;DR:

If you want the 7 day trial, it exists, and access it through the website alone and not your email.

Thats two typo's today in the MMORPG.com news feed.

Honestly, I play males as a male because I take the character more seriously. It just feels awkward to be controlling a female character. My in-game character represents me in the virtual world, and I just can't enjoythe game as much when I know that someone else may think I am a female player.

Thought I completely understand your point with regards to the view. Some of those girl bums look quite nice. (omg as if he said that about pixels on a screen wtfbbq).

Another F2P japanese MMO? Uh, no thanks. The game is so bad that the several other F2P mmo's provide better options, considering we can almost safely predict the cash shop is going to be a pyramid scheme and a rip off.

WoW is the best.

Well Alex aka power gamer Furor (Fires of Heaven Everquest 1) it was a great interview, tough I'm very belied with the terms "expansion for the more casual gamer".

This term pretty much sums up while I will never ever go back to your game again.

Every patch, every expansion you've done so far has been for the more casual gamers taking away things from the more dedicated ones, fact.

Although I agree with you that the game has become more casual with time, and that it is a bad thing, you have misinterpreted his statement. I personally don't take from its meaning that the end-game content in WoW is getting even more casual-friendly. In fact, from what I understand, they are making it more akin to Vanilla days. I think he's just saying the majority of content is not focussed on the end-game, no matter how hard or easy it is.

K seriously, this is cool. Some people make every attempt to hate on this game. Go away, just play some other game that makes you happy and forget about this one.

This made me want to play the game again.
