It defeats the whole purpose of castle walls if  you can just fly over them.

Those who do not want to craft, they sell their labor points to crafters and with that cash they BUY CRAFTED ITEMS. Crafters, with their sales, can accumulate enough cash to constantly have enough labor points to craft till eternity. All playing what they want, all happy, all part of the community.

  If crafters can just buy labor from people, and craft all day long, then thats cool.

But then it just makes the whole limited crafting thing pointless.

  You can't just sit there and harvest/produce stuff 24 hours a day like you can in many mmo's.  That is what throws so many mmo economies out of whack.  Especially in the crafting systems where there is no interdependence between crafting professions.  You could be an armor maker and just mine ore all day and make all the armor you want ... just like every other armor maker your level.  Then as I said you end up with an AH full of the same armor selling for 1gp cheaper than the next piece.

I can't imagine anything more boring, especially since that's all we've gotten from every AAA mmo in the last 6 years.

This is the best thing I've heard yet about ArcheAge's economy/crafting.

 So what about the people that enjoy  crating and harvesting all day? They should just skip this game?

There is more to do than in most mmorpgs. Tons of quests, rifts,invasions,artifacts etc.  The  monsters also look cooler than the cartoony WOW ones.

The lack of global does make it kind of lonely though.

POTBS limited your labor and number of economic plots in a similiar fashion .. its economy was probably the best part of that game.

 yea in POTBS , you could only craft for a short time every day. And everyone hated it.

These work points is a somewhat odd system , but they are not that unrealistic. You can't really spend 18 hours a day logging timber, there is no way you can handle that IRL so it is not illogical that the amount of work your character can do in a single day should be limited as well as long as they don't overdo it.

 Don't give me the realistic argument. is it realistic to fight monsters for 18 hours a day? Is it realistic to be reborn every time you die?

no, it will just force everyone to craft and gather for an hour a day. The people who want to do it all day won't be able to. And the people who hate crafting and gathering will have to do it because it will be so valuable.

So it just makes everyone do what they don't want to do.

In a sandbox game, you should be free to do what you want. So I don't see why people are going to be limited in the amount of gathering and crafting they do.

Read the rest of this thread. We've already provided data showing succesful FFA PVP games in the west.

And yes, let's look at the OP... look at his first sentence, and thread title: "The one thing that could 'kill' this game's mass appeal in the West.......is the open world PvP, IMO." In case you missed it, he said.. OPEN WORLD PVP.

He didn't mention FFA PVP anywhere in his post. So sorry, but LMAO.

Also, as you are obviously clueless, this game will likely have both faction AND limited FFA PVP servers:

"there will be a PvP server where you can even PK characters of your own faction or alliance and a separate server where you can only PK those of the opposing sides.

"there will be strict penalties for PvP between groups within the same faction (e.g. going to jail for a certain time, being expelled from the faction and becoming a pirate faction if continuously repeated). A pirate faction can be an enemy of all factions."

{mod edit}

 You still can't name one successfull FFA game is the west.  Because there aren't any . {mod edit}Darkfall is a miserble failure.

as for strict pk penalties. those things have never worked in other games. {mod edit}

 Rift is faction based, not FFA.Name one FFA mmorpg that is popular in the US. There isn't one. {mod edit}

 This is 100% true.  PvP is a good thing to have but full on PK'ing is a huge turnoff to the western market.  Look at Asherons Call, it had servers that were White unless you flagged and 1 red server.  Same is true of DAoC, a game built on the ground up as a PvP based game, Mordred wasa failure and never reached the population of the RvR servers.

Again, proof?

AC1's darktide is now their most popular server.

Mordred was opened well after DAOC's release, which would account for lower subs. Besides, it was clearly designed for FvFvF.

Vanguard's team servers were merged into their FFA servers due to lack of subs on their TEAM servers.

Now, i'll refer you to http://www.mmogchart.com/Chart2.html

Notice UO: ~200k subs pre-tram.

EVE: ~250k subs in 08, now has over 300k subs.

 do you really believe this? people don't like being ganked every 5 minutes while leveling. Thats why WOW has10 million subs, and Darkfall has a few thouseand.

Eve has optional pvp, thats why its doing well.

when UO came out it was the only game out there , so people had no choice.

Now that people have a choice nobody plays open PVP servers.

{mod edit}

I'm starting to get less excited about this game now. It looks like they are making it for 5 year olds.

Do they have an Elmo mount too?

I haven't heard anything about archeage being free to play with a cash shop. That  would ruin the game. The ones who would do well in pvp would be the richest people. And whats the point of crafting if people just buy stuff from the cash shop?

They need to have important resources in the ocean. Then you will have lots of guilds building fleets to fight for the resources

1.) When is the release date? Anyone know?

 Its supposed to be released near the end of 2011 in korea, and early 2012 in the West

2.) Are there classes and levels in this game?

 Yes

3.) Is this game more sandbox or themepark?

Its a mixture of both

4.) I've seen a video of a group of players assaulting a city, is this city a player city or an npc city?

 There are 3 continents. On the 3rd continent, players can build their own cities, and siege and destroy other cities

5.) What are the pro's of this game? When compared to other MMO's similar to this one.

 City building and sieging. Its supposed to have a very diverse skill system. It has an advanced game engine, where you can climb walls and such.  Great graphics.

6.) What are the cons? We all know there are some, even if it isn't released yet.

 Trying to mix a themepark game and a sandbox game will cause some problems.

7.) Can I be a pirtate? Sail my own ship, attack other ships etc?

 Yes

8.) Please tell me I can level up through quests/instances solely, not grinding? This question only applies if there are actually levels in the game.

 There is supposed to be a lot of quests in the game.

9.) Please tell me this isn't like a sequel to Archlord?

 no it isn't

Graphics of this game look really good, as do the characters. I'm thinking this game is one to look forward to, as long as its not your average korean grind game.

We don't know how bad the grind will be.

Hmm, I played Shadowbane as well and found the lack of quests to be the demise for me reaching max level efficiently compared to current MMOs. Actually, was there even quests in that game aside from newbie island? Cause all I remember doing is grinding.

Leveling in Shadowbane was actualliy exciting because you had to keep a constant eye out for pk's. And at some point  a large group of enemies would show up, and you would have to fight to keep control of your leveling area.

{mod edit}

  No, I don''t love Darkfall. Where did you get that idea?

My favorite MMORPG was Shadowbane, where you could max out your character in a couple of weeks.  But the skill system was so diverse, I made hundreds a of characters, all of them unique.

. I am also intrigued by your one year character progression statement which makes no sense to me.

if you ever played a Korean mmorpg, you would understand

I'm already getting ideas for my first character name. Pauly Plaguegiver, Pestilence Pete, Blackdeath Brian,

Wouldn't the lack of trees cause the soil to erode? I think your area is going to turn into a dustbowl. Then you will have to move your tribe to a new area
