Not sure why you would want Black Isle to make Fallout Online. It's like wishing J. K. Rowling would have directed the Harry Potter movies.

Sometimes I'm lucky to get 2-3 hours gaming time a week, if any. I'm not going to pay $60 and have a game lock me out after 30 days. I would possibly consider paying a $15 sub without the upfront cost, but would much prefer paying $60 and getting whatever time I like to play the content, say to all but max level content, then paying to keep playing at max level for end game content which is regularly updated.

Frankly I don't know why there aren't more hybrid models out there to keep everyone happy, even, as I have suggested in the past, different kinds of servers - so sub players get to play together and buy2play or free2play on another. VIP-only servers say.

"My friend went ahead and purchased gems, which he then traded for gold, and used the gold to buy crafting materials. It wasn't too long before he crafted his way level 80"
I've never liked how you can level by crafting. The crafting xp and character xp lines should be completely separate. I hate how if I do some crafting I outlevel my current quests. Why do all games that I know of do this?

I wish they would just offer both models on separate servers to please everyone. The biggest complaint I hear from pro-subscription players is that it weeds out not so serious players, well if the B2P players were on a separate servers that would solve the problem. Subscription players who stop subbing would be forced to move onto a free server and players who start subbing would have the choice of moving onto a subscription server.

I do wonder if the resurgence to subscription is due to the limited mmo market on consoles. What has put me off the subscription model and I imagine many other PC players is that you can't sub to all your games or it gets too costly. Subscription locks you into a single game. This is not a problem if you are limited for choice as it was in the early mmo days on PC and as is now on the console, but later it will be a problem again imho.

Also I think the console market will be very small at first. I have FFIX on both PC and PS3 and the PC experience is far better in full HD. This means only PS4 and XBox One are viable consoles for mmos I think, and that represents a small percentage of the console market.

What I'm not confident about though is that ESO will go free to play anytime soon if ever. I think changing from subscription to free to play is unlikely to happen on the console and this will limit their ability to do it on the PC. Also B2P is only viable by selling many copies at full price like GW2 have done. You need to do it from the start. Once your games are selling for $20 to entice new players to the subscription model it becomes less viable to make it free to play without an obtrusive cash shop to unlock content, etc. More likely they will rely on the growing console market to make up for the dwindling PC market.

Until there is an abundance of mmos on console with players having invested countless hours in many of them I think they are unlikely to go free to play and catch the casual gaming market.

I hope I'm wrong because I don't want to go back to the sub days and having to chose between mmos on a monthly basis rather than when I feel like it. I like to play something different every week sometimes.

Getting back to my first suggestion, I think this would be an awesome compromise to make to be able to grab PC gamers like me as well as the emerging console market.

Just logged in and it's not available anymore. Missed out. It now costs 3500SC.
Disappointing news indeed. I guess now that WoW is haemorrhaging customers imminent MMOs are all vying to fill the gap. Problem of course is most of us can't sub to them all so there will likely be no winner out of this and they will all lose out. B2P is the only viable model as GW2 has proven. I was looking forward to this one as I felt it would make a good casual game to add to existing MMOs I play. I'll wait.

I've stated in many a post that GW2 is not that innovative. I guess im just gonna put it down to their Fanbase wanting it to win as much as possible instead of having it actually be judged on its innovation.

I did hesitate but in the end I voted for GW2 because the questing/event system had the most profound effect on me. Sure other games were innovative (arguably so anyway) but did they have the same impact?

Frankly I think gambling should be banned from games. Gambling in most contries is illegal for under 18s and also in most cases controlled, and for good reason. Sure you don't win money here but it can be just as damaging to gambling addicts. It's very hard for government to prevent this so it would be a lot easier if gaming publishers and developers would take some social responsibility and stop the practice. Gamers should exert as much pressure as they can to stamp out the practice.
I have to agree with that score. I think it does what it's achieving to be very well. Some will complain there's not much to do after level-80 but this game is not a subscription game and after playing it through some will stay, create alts, play WvW and socialise, others will leave and come back to it from time to time, and yet others will get heavily into PvP. I thnk that's a great achievement and I can't wait for expensions and more and more polish through patches, oh and the holiday events guild wars style.

The problem with The Secret World and Guild Wars 2 is this: I'm being told what to do and where to go...

I don't have any control of my destiny. Sometimes I want to shift the engine in neutral and just hang out. I want to plant a house, start a player city, attack rival cities, experience deep crafting, and start a player shop.

I can't do any of this in these Theme Park games.

ArcheAge, IMO, looks to be the sustainer of MMOs. We'll see, though.

Your opinion is very valid and clearly GW2 is not the game for you but I do wonder why you and many others feel compelled to comment like this. Imagine I said, the problem with a VW Golf is that it doesn't have 4WD and I can't take it off-road - it would be a pretty stupid statement because it's not what a Golf is designed for. At least you are not being rude and insulting in your comments. I hope ArcheAge is the game for you.

Rescue it? There's nothing to rescue, just enjoy it and its evolution. It has the potential to grow into a behemoth or dwindle to a healthy loyal following. GW had modest beginnings and grew over time. It probably peaked 2-3 years in. I predict GW2 will outlive WoW but only because WoW is so out dated now. Long live GW2.

Had it been buy 2 play only it would have been quite big I think. I tried the beta and had a lot of fun but I wasn't prepared to buy it and have to sub so I thought 'oh well I'll wait for it to go free 2 play'. In the end En Masse get nothing out of me. If it had been buy 2 play I would have snapped it up without thought. Even if I played for one month it would have been money well spent and I wouldn't have felt shut out of my purchase for not subbing. Buy 2 sub is a dead model and no longer works because we all have more than one MMO we are actively playing and the vast majority of us aren't prepared to sub to more than one game. GW2 will change that. Anyone currently making an MMO needs to adapt now or die.

The model needs to be sell as many copies as possible at launch to recoup dev costs and profit, then have microtransactions to keep servers running and make a modest ongoing profit + paid expansions for more profit. It's not much different to how most games work these days with game + DLC.

MMOs also need to scale better, seperate servers/worlds suffer because the player base is split and during low "season" the world feels empty. A dynamic system would be much better where we have one world and multiple instances of that world to control population and ability to move instances to play with friends/guild mates. Although multiple worlds are needs in GW2 for WvWvW they can merge PvE worlds if need because names are unique across all worlds.

Without direct player trading, how is this supposed to work?

Paypal. Buy a load of resources on some dodgy russian website. Receive them through in game mail (which circumvented gold sell restrictions because they are resources). Trade resource for gold. Voila. Sounds complicated though and would have to be much more competitive than buying gems officially

Hm that list seems more harmfull to legid players then buy/sellers.

How so? It only applies for the first 30 days after account creation. When you roll an alt you'll be able to transfer gold to them from your main assuming you've played 30 days. It doesn't restrict receiving gold. I fail to see how it can effect legit players. You don't even need an AH alt really.

It probably depends on how big a crafter you are on whether or not you will need/want to buy bank space. If you aren't into crafting you can probably get away with not buying a bank tab.

As far as bag space. You will want to buy or craft some bags for yourself. What you start with fills up quickly. So you have to develop OCD. Always have a couple stacks of salvage kits and break down stuff you don't need. Plus sending stuff to your bank.

I would have to agree with that and also it depends on how many alts you like to have. I'm pretty sure I'll use all my character slots with 1 main and 4 alts and without bank expansion that would only be 6 item slots for each character in the bank (5x6=30 from default tab), not nearly enough, so I'd say you'd want 1 bank tab per character you have at least which will cost you $30 to get 4 more - not too bad when you think of it that way if that is the minimum initial expense after 2-3 months play. Remains to be seen if I can live without the bag expansion slots on crafting characters but hopefully there's some gold to be made crafting and that can go towards the gems to upgrade.

No, not at all. A lot of people have this excahnge system totally mixed up. You will ALWAYS be able to buy gems with gold and vice versa. If no one bought any gems for 4 years you would still be able to buy gems with your gold.

Players do not sell the gems they have bought to other players. Not directly and not indirectly. It all just goes back into the system.

Thanks for the info Vannor. Do you have a source for this? I'd like to know how they determine the price then.

- Do they release a certain amount of gems per day/hour whatever and sell them at the demand price, i.e. if they are selling well up the price, if they are selling less lower the price kind of thing?

- In GW1 commodities would run out if they sold out (I assumed because people won't selling them to vendors to increase their stock but maybe they also generated some), is this the case here or would gems always be available at market price?

- Does the buying of gem with real money have any effect on the price?

- Will there be a ceiling price so it doesn't get out of hand once there is an abundance of gold in the economy and otherwise make it impossible for new players to afford gems before they too become millionaires?

Ok fair enough not everyone will need more than 5 but it won't make much difference it will still cost about $170 to upgrade you bank and bag slots for 5 characters.

Seriously, what you're saying basically shows you have almost no understanding at all how the bank/bag system actually works.

This has been brought up before, and debunked fairly thoroughly.  Have you not actually played the game?  Would you like me to explain in very thorough detail why this isn't actually an issue?

Thanks for the offer but I do know how it works. I haven't player enough to know how it will be needed in middle/end game. I'm encouraged by the response here so I will reserve judgement for now. I did make other points other than just the cost of those upgrades though.

You bought 1.  Way too many bags in that example... a ridiculous amount of bags.

If you're playing the game that much, I can't... can't even imagine.

After playing up to level 33 in a single beta weekend, I never had any more than 2 out of 5 bags filled.  You'd have to be the world's most disorganized person/crazy packrat to be like that.  You'd have to be keeping items you don't actually need (Like pickup items from heart quests), just to clog up your inventory.

Second, you don't need that many bank slots either.  If you're playing that much you REALLY need bank slots, make your own guild.  You can have up to 150 extra slots of bank storage.

You're also ignoring the collection tab.

Basically, it'd require almost no knowledge of the game + crazy packratting + an insane amount of playing for your nightmare scenario to even start to come into effect.

I'll grant you the character slots, an extra 3 for one of each class is pretty cool.

So now add that up and compare that to a year's subscription. :)

That is encouraging. I hope you are right and I won't feel the need to buy bank and bag slot upgrades. It certainly has been needed in all other mmorpgs I've played.

Even so, my point is that despite some people thinking they can play without paying any real money for gems, someone else is and they are really buying gold for cash, and there will be 2 class of players. Maybe it won't matter, I don't care about other players have more gold than me, I only care about my experience.
