Metacritic gives you a number and points you to all of the reviews that go into said number.  It's up to you to determine how useful that number is.

Is anyone else sick of the Borg? They already did the Borg to death on Voyager (literally) so can we just skip the Borg stuff now? Why can't they come up with more interesting content that isn't Borg related?

Better question...why can't they come up with multiple paths full of interesting content that isn't Borg related?

This contradicts Karen Traviss who was writing a Boba Fett novel but recently gave up because of issues with the storyline of the novel and the new live action series.

I think the money men are driving this genre into the ground, not the developers.

This is it exactly and, given the amount of money involved in developing a game, I'm not surprised nor can I blame them.  Now, clearly, their intention is not to drive this genre, any genre, into the ground as it would hamper their returns on future projects.  However, with the genre as large as it is now, there are always hundreds of thousands of people looking for a game to call home at any given time.  That alone allows them to release a product, sell a bunch of boxes in the first couple months, recouping development costs, and put the game on life support to milk a little money from.  Why bet on making money from subs when you make your money off the box, particularly when you've funding another game coming out in 6 months?

Good choice.  Right now, this game is not worth playing at all.  Sadly it likely never will be though because it's built on a crappy foundation.  They'll keep slapping on new coats of paint to try and keep people from seeing that crumbling foundation though.

Slap as many coats of paint on as you want, the house still needs renovations.  ...Well that house needs to be torn down and rebuilt on a new foundation but you get the idea.

My question is, will the supporters of this game think it's so fantastic when they introduce a paid 3 or 4 level quest chain like they're doing with CO--A game that is also woefully under-filled with content.

SWG implemented battlegrounds (battlefields) with GU 10, June 2nd 09. GU 10 patch notes have all the details.

To say that they gave up years ago, is simply not accurate.

@OP: I cancelled my AoC specifically due to that reason, siege performance has been atrocious since that update and I refuse to pay for a product that is only partially working after so much development time has been given.

Off topic but he's probably referring to the battlegrounds circa 03 when the game was good.

The OPTION to have player crews should be in game.  Let people run their ship themselves for all I care but MMORPGs should be about options and this is one option that should be in game.

I have no experience with most of the games you mentioned but SWG was the first MMORPG that I played from 2004-2006. It's interesting you bring up the NGE when the truth is it was brought around to "appease" the people who hated the game EG: Jedi as a starter profession, no more item decay, faster paced combat, no more standing in lines etc..

If you tried appeasing the haters of STO  an NGE is exactly what you would get and it would piss off the people that already like the game.So respectfully I say thanks but no thanks.

I have to disagree with your statement that if you appeased STO haters you'd get an NGE.  STO is already mind-numbingly simple with no reason to socialize or do anything other than kill kill kill.  If you appeased STO haters, you'd end up with a game with some depth.  You just couldn't shove it into the game after only 2 weeks of testing and just 2 months of development time as was done with the NGE.  No, if time was taken to properly integrate the changes, you would arrive at a far superior game.

Funny how people say "This won't be around in 12 months" or "Lifetime subs are just a ripoff to make easy cash"...

No game so far has closed as early as 12 months, even Tabula Rasa was around for 4 years, Matrix Online, 4 years. SWG, every week someone sets a new 'won't be around by'-date since 2005. Warhammer, still around, AoC, still around, Vanguard, still around...

NEWSFLASH guys: As much as you'd like to see it happen. These games stay profitable for a long time. They cut servers, personnel, expansions, updates before they really shut down a game. Even on 'life support and a skeleton crew', there's a "finished" product that yields money with a minimal subscriber base.

And as far as STO goes: I really don't expect any jaded bohooo-mmorpgs-go-down-the-drain veteran to join this game, but I'm sure as hell a quiet but huge majority of people _will_ join it and maybe Star Trek and essentially PvE can sustain a decent community. Trek nerds are mostly nice people after all...

Tabula Rasa ran from November of 07 through the end of February 09 that was 15 months, not 4 years.  Hellgate London....Auto Assault...

It's definately fun, this is something a lot of people seem to agree on.

Just ignore the haters and enjoy the game. Eventually they'll take their whining elsewhere and we'll still be having fun with STO.

Right, I must have missed the part where discussions of MMORPGs were reduced to the intellectual status of 13 year old boys. Don't like STO, you're whiner. What, you didn't play EQ, whiner. You like WoW, whiner. Hey, you disagree with me, whiner. Yep, great communication skills we've got going here.

As opposed to the constant "This game sux" "You are a fanboy if you like this game" "No true trekkie would play this" coming from the haters? You know perfectly well he isn't talking about those that give constructive criticism so don't even try going there.

While that is true I will say this, in my opinion, it appears that there are far more well thought out reasons why STO is a bag game than why it is a good game.  Perhaps the good stuff is getting lost in the noise as there are certainly a lot of playing trying the game right now that won't be around at launch.  I guess we'll see how that plays out in February and throughout the year.

Well that saved me starting this thread.. thanks.

OP took the words out of my mouth. I Betad both Champions (still subscribed and enjoying) and STO (from early closed, wont be buying)

I wont be buying STO becasue like the OP said this is a very dissapointing effort from a great company with a good franchise to work with.

STO is simply Champions with Star Trek Skins, it really is that simple. It really is that dissapointing.

I wont even bother going into detail becasue none is required. The fans will howl, those who get what im saying will nod.

Everyone though for pity's sake do yourself a favour. DO NOT PRE ORDER! wait until there is a free trial then look back on this thread and say "wow glad I listened to those guys, saved myself $50"

Have to agree 100%.  Particularly with the red section.  Do not buy STO!  Wait for a trial!

Hey everyone,

So I'm in the beta, and really liking it so far. However, I've got a question about uniform colors...I was under the impression that it was:

Yellow = engineering/security/tactical

Red = Command

Blue = Medical/Science

It seems though that the game has switched red to mean security/tactical and kept yellow as engineering, and also included red as command (as seen by the fact that the admiral and other captains are wearing red, and the tactical bridge officer position is color coded red).

So I'm just wondering if there was a change in the cannon, or if I missed something, or if this is a star trek online thing only.

Your only thinking about TNG. This is kind of incorporating all the shows into one.  Not to mention that you can make your own uniform and colors and can do the same thing for your bridge officers. so thats not exactly canon either, but you can make it canon if you want it to be.

TNG, DS9 and Voyager all stuck to the red is command gold is operations (which includes security) blue is sciences thing.  Enterprise went with TOS in which gold is command, red is operations since Ent was set before TOS.

In short: One mark in the "Cryptic has no clue how to make a Star Trek MMORPG (or any MMORPG)" column.

The good news is, more often than not, PC games based on the Star Trek IP have pretty much tanked.  This one will be in good company.

So true. I bought ST:Armada  (i think it was called that ) RTS. It was pretty poor.

If you thought Armada 1 was poor you should have played 2.  Armada 1 is Starcraft compared to Armada 2.

I'm a hard core Deep Space Nine fan (we call ourselves "Niners," the series writers even named the Deep Space 9 baseball team after us,) and I don't think I'll like this game much because of misconceptions like "The combat is highly reminiscent of what you saw in the later seasons of that show. The Federation is once again at war, and most of the game revolves around that (as did the series)." Saying such a silly thing makes it look like the author didn't even watch 83% of the series at all.

Liked "Way of the Warrior" and "Sacrifice of Angles" eh, Jon? So did I, but did you happen to catch "Duet," "In the Pale Moonlight," "Far Beyond the Stars," or "Trials and Tribble-ations?" These were as much the core of the series as the far fewer battle oriented episodes and they can even rank themselves as some of the very best of Trek, yet not a single battle takes place in any of them.

Cryptic seems to be aiming for the hard-core shoot-em-up fans with this game with non-stop combat, combat, combat. But that isn't at all what Star Trek is about, even the war based seasons of DS9.

I agree on all points.  Despite the fact that the latter half of DS9 was about the Dominion War there were not many episodes with battles.  More than typical?  Perhaps.  However, to hear defenders of STO talk of it though you'd think that every other scene was a battle.  Also, as you pointed out the majority of the best episodes of Star Trek, from all 5 series, don't feature combat.  I'm not saying that STO shouldn't have combat.  Indeed, combat should be featured in the game.  However, it shouldn't be 95% of the game.

STO is pure garbage.  It's a poor attempt at a Star Trek game and a poor attempt at an MMORPG.

Skip it.  I'm going to guess that you want more from a game than what Cryptic has been advertising.

So this past weekend, I visited friends for our monthly board game/RPG session. The host is a board game freak--he's got one of the most massive board game collections ever -- European games with strange, but innovative and fun mechanics, games written in foreign languages in which he has to scour the internet for rules translations.  He's sampled two MMOs, (mainly because I'm an MMO geek) but found them wanting.

My second friend is a chemist, a real newbie when it comes to MMOs -- we all played DDO for about a month (again, at my prompting), but that came to an end as real life threw us some curves.

They are not forum hounds. They don't follow the debates. They are Star Trek geeks however, moreso than even me.  So I mentioned to them this weekend about STO releasing in February. They both had only heard about it in passing -- as in, "Yeah, we heard there might be some sort of Star Trek MMO out there."

And to my utter surprise, through no more prompting from me than "I'm not happy with the direction STO's going" my two friends jumped in and started describing exactly what THEY, the non-mmo, Star Trek geeks, would like to see in a Star Trek MMO.

  1. Yep, Player crews
  2. Manned stations
  3. A bridge view
  4. Real time crafting mini-game for the Chief Engineer
  5. Explorable ships (ship interiors)
  6. events happening on board your ship
  7. Away teams (which I assured them, were actually in the game)

What really shocked me was that they came up with these ideas without any words from me, without any suggestions, nor encouragement. I just let them talk, because frankly I was thinking, "Damn, this is going to make a great thread" lol.

Not once did they mention:

  1. Wanting to be a captain
  2. Wanting exterior, over the hull, view
  3. Wanting Extensive combat.

There you have it.  Yes, a small sample size to be sure. Anecdotal evidence? Yep.   But fascinating nonetheless.

I'll throw my anecdotal evidence in as well.  My fiance and several of my friends feel precisely the same way.  They're casual trekkers (not Trekkies like myself) and I didn't I tell them about the game from what I've read online so what they said was basically stream of consciousness hypothesizing about a Star Trek MMORPG.  One person did go and look at the videos cryptic has put out (trailers and interviews) and was pretty disgusted at what he saw.

don't worry. The WOW trolls will crush this game's rep via forums.  They can't stand to have any  other game be popular.

Then again, because it is not a fantasy mmo, maybe it will be the Eve trolls that do it :)

STO won't need WoW troll help in killing itself.

Anyone with half a brain would realize that 150k subs is a success. It is also a hefty payday. There are quite a few publishers that would be quite happy with those kind of subscription numbers.

Note the qualifier, "...a well done Trek MMORPG..."

I didn't say 150k subs isn't a success.  It is...just not for a Star Trek MMO.
