Though none of those reasons outweigh one reason to not go: It's been hijacked by everything non-comic related.

Not a fan boy.  Don't really care how many subs they have.  I just don't see what's so hard to understand about the situation.  What would the end game be for Activision Blizzard?  Why would they continue to operate 900+ servers for a population of 4-5 million?  If what you claim is true, why would they have opened that many in the first place?  You don't buy and maintain that much equipment for 12.5 million people spread over 8 years.

You guys should do some research.

The 11 million posted on their website is the total number of subscriptions since 2004, not the current amount of players playing the game.

That is a patently false statement.

No it isn't it's the truth. Do some research.

http://us.blizzard.com/en-us/company/press/pressreleases.html?id=2847881

Press release annoucing 12 million players, October 2010.

Subscriber definition:

World of Warcraft’s Subscriber Definition

World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees’ territories are defined along the same rules.

----

So in October 2010, WOW had 12 milion players in the world according to the above definition. Research done.

Do you believe everything you read, I take it when you watch the news or read the news paper you believe all that too correct?. Do you honestly believe there are 11 million people playing world wide? then you must be delusional. If you do some research into how many active characters are playing in each of the servers there is only about 4 million, break that down into how many active accounts... you do the math  --> http://www.warcraftrealms.com/census.php

So you're trying to use CensusUI as a basis of an argument rather than statements that can be found within annual reports of a publicly traded company?

No.  It's not an MMORPG according to its developers so it doesn't belong here.  Same with GW and a number of other games.

They would likely be nothing more than the instances that pass as planets in STO.  Odds are most planets in the game will be that way anyway regardless of how many they have.  Hence the mention of major planets vs minor ones.  Even if they were large planets that are fully fleshed out, what would the value of those planets actually be?  Unless there were incredibly large numbers fo players on each server people would be spread so thin you may as well play a single player game.

Whenever I hear the title of this patch all I can think of is the area of Ohio I'm from...

Don't play RIFT; don't have any interest in it.  That said, I strongly believe this is the new normal.  When all you had was EQ, DAoC, and AC, the market was pretty small, players trickled in over time.  Today, at launch, you've got a few hundred thousand people banging on your door if your game is high profile.  Rather than players coming in over a very long period of time you've got everyone front loaded.  Of course there is a going to be a huge spike then a drop.

I hafta wonder, with all the viruses and everything populating the Droid marketplace why ANYONE would download ANYTHING from it.  I may not like the facist nature of Apple but atleast I don't have to worry that programs on there contain malicious spyware.

You don't have to worry about malicious programs on the App Store?  Why?  If you think a tester poking around with something for--at most--an hour is going to root out every piece of malware, you're sadly mistaken.

Also, your post amounts to saying that Trion would intentionally create a piece of malware with the hope that none of their users would ever figure out the program is doing more than just providing a login code.

Anyway, I wish more companies would provide these for their games.  I'm surprised we haven't seen one for EVE...

Way back when, LotRO was going to have a time-based skill advancement system perhaps similar to EVE's.

This is completely false. You're thinking more along the lines of investors...and there's nothing wrong with wanting a good ROI.

First of all there needs to be a correction right off the bad.  you sad grandaddy of the fantasy genre ????  Lotro only a few years old in mmo terms.  Sorry but were going to have to fail you right now.

You want granddaddy you go to EQ1, neverwinter nights or asheron[object Window]s call.

Sorry.

[object Window]

I[object Window]m sure he was referring to the books being the grandaddy of the fantasy genre.

STO is not Star Trek.  STO is an absolutely terrible MMORPG.  That[object Window]s probably why you dislike this game.

Well, everyone has their own ideas on what constitutes a Star Trek game, but.. in this case, i[object Window]d say your spot on.  There probably is hope for the future though, as Cryptic are moving more into the F2P market, given that STO already has a cash shop, it wouldnt be much of a stretch of the imagination to see this one going the same way in the next 2 or maybe 3 months. Champions Online, their other game is doing that apparently, and their next title Neverwinter is going to be a F2P microtransaction driven game too.. might well make their games more popular.. though that might be stretching the imagination a bit too

Question:  Why would going F2P give hope for the future of STO?  I guess it gives hope to those who do like STO but to those who don[object Window]t like it, won[object Window]t like it even after it[object Window]s F2P.

While I agree . I would add the caveat that it[object Window]s a bit of a stretch of the imagination to classify it as a MMORPG. Cryptic has become the Mo-ped of game makers . They[object Window]re fun to play for a while , but you don[object Window]t want your freinds to find you playing it. It like a Mo-ped leaves you craving more .

I knew when I was typing that in that I shouldn[object Window]t call it an MMORPG.  So, STO is an absolutely terrible game.  I even hesitate to call it a game...

I liked the sci fi aspect as well.  For some reason precu SWG was so easy to rp in.  I rp'd 3 characters with ease.  It never felt forced or phony.  For some reason in other games I have a hard time roleplaying, like there is a mental block or something.  I don't know what it is...

But in SWG I had a little back story and my characters each had their own seperate little personalities and even different friends.  Sometimes I would even take a step back and marvel at the fact that I could be 3 different people so convincingly and still be me.

I'd love to find whatever SWG had in another game and start rping again, where it didn't feel forced.  Maybe I just lost my imagination though...

You know, that's a good point. It was easy to RP in. I'm no "carebear", I always like to PVP. But it really was easy to RP in SWG. You may have hit on a good topic for a thead in another forum. What makes some games easyer to RP than others ?

The answer:  Reasons to socialize.  RPing comes more naturally when you're thrust into positions of having to socialize.  That was SWGs greatest strength; you had to work with others.

That's part of it. I Think it was also that there were so many things that were social. Almost every MMO tries to have a social aspect but SWG had them all over the place. For crafters all the best resources were on the most dangerous planets. This lead crafters to ask for escorts. Animal resources needed scout and ranger players to harvest them for the crafters. A POB ship needed a pilot and at least 2 gunners. And on and on. New MMO's try to force players to group and often leave it at that. I soloed LOTRO until level 18 before a really needed to group, and before that I hardly ever talked to anyone at all.

Well, I did say reasons and not a reason.

This game is so fantastic, it is selling for $2.50 at amazon, not even a year after release. I bet everyone who paid $240-300 for a lifetime sub is just tickled pink over it. And if it is so fantastic, why is next to no one playing it, and selling for less than the price of a burger? The free market does not lie.

Not at all. I am a lifer and have no problems with anyone selling it cheap. My only issues that I have as being a lifer is that if they do end up going free to play, I want to know how they will handle lifetime subs. I figure it will probably be something like lotro is doing. And lets get real, there is absolutely no way you can say that next to no one is playing it. Does it have 10 million subscribers, of course not. But as long as they are making money, then they have plenty of folks playing.

That's not necessarily true.  There is a difference between profitable and profitable enough.

Who cares? we dont own the company so we are not making money from it. From a gamer perspective it is true.

Those who care are the folks who play a profitable game that gets shut down (or flushed down the toilet in SWG's case) because the game isn't profitable enough.  I'm not saying it will happen to STO (nor am I saying it won't), I'm simply saying it happens.  From a gamer perspective, you should want games you like to continue operating, therefore, you should care.

They know how to make a successful sandbox game.

I concur.

I've played it.  I'll spare you a tirade and give you my top gripes:

  • It's not Star Trek in any way shape or form.
  • You mash the spacebar or the F key.
  • Two mission types:  Run around tagging things with the F key or kill 5 enemies in space, beam down and kill people, beam up and kill more enemies in space.
  • Heavily instanced.
  • Socialization completely unnecessary.
  • Terrible "community."

Every second of SWG playtime was more enjoyable than the best moments in any other game.  The lowest lows in SWG were leaps and bounds beyond the highest highs in any other game.
