I'd be interested to hear more about firefall, and even though its not an MMO, I'd like to hear more about what 38 studios is doing.

That's actually pretty interesting.

I would market this on college campuses....imagine THOSE battles!

Really, you should probably educate your self a bit more on the pitfalls of Windows if you truly think your practices make your computer a "fortress of safety".

About the only thing safer is Linux. If any of you says Apple, you're an idiot. Apple has backdoors, they're just not exploited because most people cannot be arsed.

In the hacker contest a couple days ago...Safari and OSX got hacked in 5 seconds.

Warhammer suffers from instantgratificationitus.  It will never be right.  Just like RvR in DAOC was never right after new frontiers.  As soon as teleporting and really, really fast travel to the fight was introduced, strategic RvR turned into a mage stand off at a random keep.

Mythic had it right before they revamped everything...after that they introduced a couple cool modifications that were buried beneath all the crap they added to make it easy for people.

Old Frontiers= exciting, fun, meaningful, strategic RvR

New Frontiers= Cool keeps, better real RvR, just a Lemming run into the minefield of mage spells.

Only RvR that existed after new frontiers was some small group warfare, and stealthers killing each other

War screwed the pooch from the get go. Hate to say it because I wanted WAR to succeed....but it's DOA

the problem with full open pvp is that there are too many a55hats in the world.  You know, the ones that will be level 900000 and gank the lvl 5 noobs until the noobs quit because it gets annoying real quick...then the a55hats wonder why their server dies and has no population, and move on to destroy the next game.

I've never minded pvp when you actually have a CHANCE at winning.  For example, if I'm out questing, or farming resources, and I get ganked by a guy the same level as me, or him and his buddy...I might die....I might die horribly and get all my phat loots taken, but at least I had a chance. I don't mind that.

Now...I'm lvl 5 trying to figure out how to play the game, and a level 90 loser kills me 45 times in a row and dances on my corpse for an hour.....that just blows.  It's not fun.  there is no explanation or reasoning to make it fun.

PvP is a blast, getting noob ganked by cap level players isn't pvp, it's just a bunch of asshats taking pleasure from fighting someone that can't fight back.  They are why pvp games fail.  They should just stick with counterstrike.

Oh, one more thing. An open pvp game needs to have accountability, but in the end only the community can enforce it, not artificial rules.  I say make an accounts characters share a surname.  All their characters that they ever make will have the same Unique last name.  This way, if they want to be an asshat, they can be hunted down and murdered every time they log in until they QQ and quit.  This way they can't run around ruining the game for everyone else, and just log an alt when it gets too "hot"

Last thing: The above was for a completely open pvp game.  In a faction game, separate the pve from pvp like daoc did...then anytime you come across an enemy they are open game, regardless of level.  In this instance they had the option of not being there, so there is nothing to cry about.

Actually, now that I think of it, you know what would be cool?  Faction PvP like bs scenarios and what not.

then....wait for it...make all the stupid scenarios same faction battles.  Guilds on the same faction could go play war games against each other, or even random groups made up of your factions memebers.  THAT would be better.  You could kick the crud outta each other, then team up and go take the other factions keeps.

Just give me a DAOC 2, or better yet, revamp the engine, graphics, and interface on DAOC and call it DAOC 2.  That'll be my dream PvP/RvR game.  DAOC was the bomb during its prime.  But without necessary upgrades, and the fact that Mythic sold out to EA, the franchise is not going to go anywhere.  Like it or not, DAOC had RvR right.  It had every little details right ranging from keep siege, to relics, to group vs group warfare, to raid vs raid, to persistent battlegrounds, to Realm Ranks & Abilities, to positional attacks, to 3 realms, to separating PvE from PvP, etc..

It would be a game that can easily be in the top 3 MMO in the U.S.  Unfortunately since Mark Jacobs quit, Mythic sold out to EA, this will never happen again.   Bleh.

I think I would like something that had frontiers like DAOC....but old frontiers, not the new lame one where you could insta teleport everywhere.  The new keep styles were cool though, where you could bust down walls as well as doors.  Get rid of the fast travel teleport BS and it would be cool.  I hate the lemming into battle, die, release, run back in 30 seconds..bleh.  Total Zerg Fest.  Now, when you had rez sickness and had to run 20 minutes through enemy territory to get back to the fight you had REAL battles, with strategy and an actual winner of the fight.

Instant gratification PvP sucks. (i.e. warfronts, scenarios, battlegrounds.)  They are an ok diversion for a minute, but not as the main PvP

Going to go with Camelot here as it was an awesome city.  Another nice one I thought was Freeport in EQ2. Only problem is that it was zoned and kind of killed it for me.  Everytime I saw doors I thought...shit loading screen.

I'll have to +1 this post! I remember thinking the exact same thing.  Freeport was amazing the first time through it.

Outside of that...I'm a huge DAOC fan, and didn't care for WoW much...but I'd have to go with Stormwind and Ironforge for best cities.

I didn't play in beta, but I can tell you I logged on last night at about 11pm eastern and the entire freemarch area was swarmed by death rifts. Spent 2 hours running around slaughtering undead and closing rifts. It was a blast.

don't know much more than that though.

I agree, 3 factions and a large END GAME area to fight over.

Not like WAR had, more like DAOC, very big, with keeps and 3 factions is a must!!

also would be nice if they would balance the classes a little bit so every PvP map I went into wasn't just 90% rogues.

I almost had a heart attack in WAR beta when I realized Mythic thought it would be a good idea to make the game nothing like DAOC. BIGGEST....MISTAKE...EVER..  When we screamed bloody murder in Beta, they tried to add the pvp in.  At first they were only going to have the stupid scenarios.

DAOC PvP was FUN.  WAR was....Hey, lets run to wherever there aren't any enemies and take THAT castle so we don't have to fight anyone.  It was kinda lame...and I was a pretty hardcore fan of Mythic.

You won't be able to customize DA2 you are playing a SPECIFIC character, not one you make up. So you can be a guy champion or a girl champion, that is it. This is COMPLETELY different than DA Origins. Not saying its bad, just a completely different take on it.

A third faction, and huge area to fight over. <cough>

Yeah, Cryptic didn't get Salvatore to write for them, more like WOTC got the idea to have salvatore write a series of books as a prelude to an MMO, then they got Cryptic to make the MMO based off of that setting.  So...WOTC reorganized the whole forgotten realms setting to have Cryptic make an MMO.

Well, I saw a cop show on tv once, and then this other cop show came out, I didn't watch it because it was a cop show too, so obviously it was pointless since I'd already seen a cop show.  I mean, some people say this one is funnier, but like, they both have cops, and guns, and they catch bad guys, so I was like....LAME, the first cop show ALREADY caught bad guys, so a few minor differences don't matter.  In fact, I never watch TV or movies cause everything that comes out has been done at least once before in one form or another.

First of all, the best D&D campaign setting is Greyhawk. Let's just get that straight... ;)

I was actually writing off Cryptic and this NWNO -- this Cryptic's track record is horrible. Let's not forget the best of Cryptic's talent stayed with NCSoft when the latter bought CoX from Cryptic.  That's why the new Cryptic games suck.

Having said that, finding out that Salvatore is creating the lore has sparked my interest again. Smart move on Cryptic's part. Perhaps this means the company is learning? If so, I will check out NWNO.

While much of 4e translates, I'm not sure how an MMO will handle all the pushing/pulling/sliding. While on the tabletop these movement affects can be of tactical signifigance, I'm not sure how they will be useful in a dynamic online setting.

So will NWNO kill DDO Online? It depends on how NWNO is executed. DDO has one of the most fun combat systems, and one of the most customizable character progressions in MMOs. If the NWNO character creator has the same flexibility as the DDI character creator, then it could be really fun. If NWNO has a fast-paced, tactical combat system like DDO, then it could be fun. If it has open lands to explore, and intricate dungeons full of could be fun.  The only known factor is that the story and writing will be good. That might not be enough.

for the most part, the movement stuff will probably get tossed...but pushing (knockbacks) pulling (that hand thing scorpion pull that death knights in WoW can do) etc can be put into play, and all the weird spell like abilities that all the classes seem to have in 4e, those will  translate to reactives and what not in an MMO.  Much more fluid translation than older rule sets. It could be good if they don't make it all lame.

So like, this play it online, and it's fantasy...and swing swords and do quests.  There are even magic spells! DuuuuudE! This game is a total WoW clone, cause if it's played online and has you know....stuff, it must have taken it all from WoW!

Ur MoM is a WoW clone.

<cough> sorry, had to get that out of my system.

I looked over the  4th edition stuff for the group I DM.  They killed table top.  The rule changes look to me like they are trying to make it more accessible to MMO conversion.  I guess that might be a good thing for the video gamer crowd, as the older DnD rule sets translated horribly to MMO's.

Honestly, I'm not too enthusiastic about it.  I love Salvatore, I love Forgotten Realmls...but this sounds just like DDO...which was a horrible game for an MMO.  All those instances...bleh. at least DDO finally went free to way it was ever worth 15 a month.

I'd almost rather they didn't try to make D&D MMO's anymore, they always butcher them horribly.

You are looking from the wrong angle here.

CORPGs (like Guildwars and DDO) are fine game when you play them with a few friends. They are not MMOs at all but rather a perfect oportunity to play a little with your IRL friends.

But these games are all about small groups like pen and paper RPGs. MMORPGs offer a very different kind of gameplay, both massive and solo. If you take a CORPG game for what it is, something rather close to playing Diablo online with a few buddies, there are a lot of things to enjoy.

If you expect it to be the same thing as a MMO ou will just be dissapointed.

But just like MMOs have CORPGs some strenghts, they are kinda something in between a MMO and a single player game. They can focus a lot more on story than a MMO and spend more work to make the small group into heroes.

I do however agree that CORPGs should not have a 15 dollar monthly fee. They should just like single player game be B2P, Guildwars already proven that you can earn a lot of money using that model without having a itemshop that sells useful items (they do sell Halloween costumes, extra bank space and extra character slots but I can live with that).

CORPGs like STO that both have monthly fees and itemshops is highway robbery and if they plan the same for NWN it wont work at all. CORPGs are closer to single player RPGs and should cost like that, even though an added RMT shop with fluff to cover some more bandwidth is OK.

Yeah, didn't mean to totally bag on DDO. It's a cool game for a box price.  You can play it once in awhile, and not feel like you're wasting money by not logging in frequently, it just wasn't worth $15 a month.

I log onto DDO once in awhile and play with a friend, about once a month, if that.  I don't mind the item shop in that.  I am not remotely interested in another D&D franchise game after that fashion though. I'd rather someone made another awesome single player like Neverwinter Nights was.  Not very faithful that Cryptic is the right studio for the job either.  The only promising thing I see about it is that Salvatore is involved.

Man, looking back at this is something else.  I remember playing DAOC and starting to hear people say WoW all the time.  Had no idea what they were talking about.  Then a guildie told me and got me in the beta.  I tested in the beta for a few months,

(I say tested...not just play4free) didn't like the cartoonishness of it and still liked DAOC's gameplay better.  Then WoW came out, my entire guild quit, so I followed. Quit a month later.....5-6 years later and WoW is some huge mutant gorilla on the block that overshadowed and killed pretty much every other MMO out there.  Who woulda thought it?
