I have the remote auction house app on my droid phone and love it, but i choose not to pay the monthly fee to be able to actually do anything with it. As is though it lets me see how my auctions and bids are doing while im logged off.

If these apps would either offer free versions or even an upfront one time fee I wouldn't mind at all at picking it up but ill be damned if im going to increase my monthly subscription to have these I think i pay enough. And yes I payed for the $6 authenticator which at least came with a pet and again was a one time fee and now you can also have that for free(sans pet) long as you have some form of smartphone with the authenticator app.

On the subject of remote auction houses...I'm against auction houses to begin with.  I think they are one of the ways devs catered to players request that they should not have done.  They are easy, convenient, and destroy immersion.  Yes, it took longer in the days when you had to physically go to the players house and their merchant to purchase items, but it kept you in the game.  I detest auction houses, even though they free up a lot of time to do other things.  I say do away with auction houses and bring back player housing, even if it is in areas like DAOC did it.

Two things I've long wanted to see in MMO's....remote guild chat and guild tools to manage the guild while not in the game.  EQ2 had some guild tools I believe that the guild leaders could use while not in game.

The reason for the guild tools....many successfull guild leaders have a day job too, and many of them have computer access at work, or a laptop from the couch while hanging out with the family that they use when not able to play.   When I was running guilds, or being a guild officer, I often found that I spent more time managing the guild than playing the game!

Guild management is a whole meta game on its own, and is much more complicated than many people think.  I worked harder at running guilds than I ever did at my day job.  Having tools to adminster guild functions, and be able to communicate with in game guild members would be a huge step forward.

I don't believe it should be paid for though, except maybe a one time fee for the App.  I also think it should be limited to guild chat and tells, otherwise your phone would probably explode from using it.  Also the apps need to be available on computers also, not just smart phones.

Other than my two cents, I agree with the article.

Rift is the best game similar to WoW, in my opinion it's better.

Rift is a pretty good pve game, but he's looking more for Arena and 1v1/2v2/ style PVP. RIFT doesn't really have that, and the class combo's in RIFT are different enough that there will always be a class that will Pwn another one.

Maybe wait for GW2, that might fit your style a little better.

There really aren't any good pvp games out there.  WoW's PvP blew hard, but arena's were kind of fun for a bit.

RIFT isn't gonna have what you're lookin for.  Can't think of any other game that has homogenized classes and arena's.  Some games have some of what you want, but lack in other areas.

RIFT dungeons and what not are ok.

Only honorable mention for 1v1 or small group pvp these days is Darkfall, unforunately.

Don't think there are any games worth mentioning that are balanced for small scale pvp.

I honestly haven't seen a game in recent years where crafting wasn't nearly pointless.(other than EVE)  I actually heard good things about RIFTS crafting, but haven't bothered to try it.

Honestly, has there actually been a game with decent crafting since WoW came out?

This is a growing problem in MMO's.  They are no longer really MMORPG's.

Quests are there now to shepard people to different parts of the game, or help them level, get gear etc.  But that is not what they are suppose to be.

MMORPG's branch from RPG's, which themselves derived from MUD's, which came from table top RPG's, ala D&D, Rolemaster, etc.

Quests are suppose to emulate the adventures game masters/dungeon masters would take you on.

As far as that goes, quests these days are epic fail.   They came from their humble roots and are now used as tutorials, ways to get XP, loot and to lead you by the nose from region to region.  In short, quests aren't really quests anymore. Even when a quest is well designed, most people overlook the story and just bee line for the phat lootz.

Unfortunately, the current generation of gamers, and probably all those to come after, don't know how to function without being led by the nose.  Quest =instant gratification now, it's the only thing they've ever known.

Don't know if there is a fix for this, but quests aren't really necesary for anything anymore, because games are Multiplayer Online......but there is no RPG anymore.

Vanguard makes me sad.  I loved my DK.  It's a shame they made such a mess of it.  I'm glad to see it will still be around for those who are still playing it though.

What I don't understand is why someone hasn't made something in a kindred spirit to DAOC. Not necesarily exactly the same, but maybe a game with similar depth.  I think that's what we're missing these days.  Old EQ, DAOC, AC etc had depth that is lacking now.  Todays games have lots of gimmicks and a loot train to chase.  But that's all. DAOC you had a developed PvP game that was much more than stupid capture the flag mini games, and the outcomes of pvp affected pve, and even some of the dungeons and what not you could do.  PvE wasn't all that great, but the open land dragon raids were pretty cool, and I have to admit, sometimes I miss farming a spawn rather than running around doing stupid quests all the time.  Why can't we have both?

Anyone remember Finns? or Redcaps? Why can't we have some of that AND decent pve quests.  I kind of miss open world dungeons too.  There's no reason you can't have open world dungeons and a few instances also.

Also.....when can we go back to crafting having need and meaning?  Um...that pretty much sums it up in broad strokes.

Link didn't work for me. Seems SWG forums are down?

Probably because Anonymous has been launching mass DDOS attacks on Sony for suing the guy that posted the PS3 hacks

I honestly don't know what Sony is thinking.  Somehow they manage to hang in there, but they are horrible at making and managing MMO's.

How many times in the last 10 years have you heard this: "Oh man, I can't wait to play this new MMO coming out...oh, wait...SOE just took over publishing rights.  I wouldn't touch this game with YOUR hard drive...."

I remember hearing people talk about WoW in the DAOC guild chat. I was like, WTF are people talking about?  Then one of my guildies got me a beta invite and I went off to test WoW for a couple days a week for a couple months.  The download torrent patcher was terrible. In fact, after about the third beta phase I couldn't even download the next patch and had to stop testing.

I thought it was ok, but too cartoony.  People kept talking about it.  I thought the druid changing into a bear was kind of cool, hunters hadn't been let into the beta yet.  I figured a few people would leave to go play it and shrugged it off as I went back to DAOC.

Next thing I know, my entire guild left DAOC either for SWG or WoW...the server was empty, even my former enemies no longer played.  I left to go play WoW to be with my guild, lasted about 3 months and walked away from it.  WoW wasn't all that great in the beginning.  It had better pve than DAOC, but PvP of any sort was non existent. Though the battles at Tauren Mills were kind of fun before they added all those stupid battle grounds.  I'm still sad that WoW killed so many other games.  It's over abundance of genericness and eventual ease of play killed the market like a giant tree in the forrest killing all of the undergrowth because the smaller plants can't get any sunlight.

Eh, regardless, I swore off anything MMO wise that SOE touches a long time ago.  I think they have the most impressive streak I have seen of demolishing the MMO genre.

It's interesting how often the terms 'boring' and 'repetitious' are equated with 'difficult'.  Thus anytime these two things are removed from a game in any way, the game is said to have been 'dumbed down' by those unfortunate souls who had to end up slogging through months of pounding out the same combination of keys that can still be used today to accomplish the same feat, but in only a week.  The difficulty is identical.  The key combination hasn't changed.  Only the amount of times you have to repeat it is different.  So things aren't dumber in most cases, just faster.

I think this is a brilliant point to make here, and its one thats really at the centre of the debate. It is quite clear to see that both sides have credible claims. However for me as a player mmo play has always been about the social interactions, and has been my main reason to participate. I can honestly say that my social experience in the genre has totally changed since the first time i loaded up and logged in.  Let me give you an example of this. As the World of warcraft is arguably at the centre of the "dumbing down" criticism ill refer to a point from its patch changes.

Back in August 2006 the patch 1.12 titled "the drums of war" was released allowing players to participate in cross realm battle grounds. personally this totally turned the way i played on its head. No longer did i need to work on my reptuation and skill within the server only battle grounds in order to keep my spot in the top pvp team on the server. In fact within a week or so i had totally lost contact with pvp buddies who before the patch i spent large amounts of time playing with and got to know well. I personally would put this interaction on a par with meeting someone in real life. Soon i was able to just leach for honor and not even participate. So for me i feel the changes to the games content that caused the removal of my own personal teamplay, Has dumbed down play for myself. regardless of the fact difficulty did not alter, as battlegrounds were still competitive zones.

Does anyone else have any experiences similar to this? or maybe the total opposite? has game changes made the social aspect better for yourself?

DAOC for me.  It was ridiculous difficult when I first started playing, and I was playing a ranger, which didn't get into groups easily.  Throughout leveling I made a lot of friends forming groups for the other misfits that couldn't get groups, even had healers messaging me when I'd log on wanting to know if I was getting a group going.  PvP was more fun also, because you knew your enemies by reputation after awhile, and they knew you (if you were any good.) Everyone was from the same server.

This went away when they started making leveling easier and solo-able.  Same thing happened in PvP when they made travelling the frontiers super fast with teleports to the fight and boats that would get you places quickly.  After that, pvp turned into a lemming run to see who could get killed by the wizards fireball the fastest, instead of having any strategy and planning. Massive keep fights, sneaking through the enemies territory to sack their keep and anything exciting just turned into a zerg fest at one castle or the other where people would just teleport to the fight and die over and over again because there was not much of a downside to getting killed.

FFA sounds great in theory, but the way it is implemented in most games allows douche bags to camp noobs until all the new players quit and the game dies.  The people that want it destroy it before it really has a chance to succeed. /shrug.

It's a shame too, Vanguard had a lot of potential

I'm waiting to see what happens with the bard soul.  I respecced one of my roles to mostly bard and it's just silly.  I can pretty much stand in the middle of a warfront and slowly kill others while buffing my team and pretty much never get hurt.  I'm sure the nerfbat will swing that way eventually

Still no review?

first impressions and reviews are different beasts.  They did a first impression already.  Don't think a review will be out for a bit yet.

It's a solid casual game. I'll be playing for at least a couple more months, but then again, I'm not in a rat race to cap level either. I only log on a couple times a week.

I'd like to see something like a newer, 3 faction daoc type pvp (minus the instant travelling instant gratification crud from new frontiers), and then have the scenarios/ esports available to play within your own faction, i.e. go against your friends guild.

Also have level restricted battle grounds like daoc had so people can learn to fight on their way up to cap level.  scenarios/warfronts...whatever, are ok, but I think they'd be better if they were advertised as a side show, which is what they are, rather than trying to disguise them as something that has any meaning.  I'd rather run a warsong gulch or murder ball against people in my own realm, then go to real war with the opposing realms.  Treating scenarios as something other than brief diversions seems kinda pointless, but they can be fun once in awhile.

Maybe make them only available during certain festivals, and not all of the time, to make them special. (i.e. have NO scenarios/warfronts most of the time) Bring them in as festival games or something.

3 isn't necesarily a magic number, but 5, 7, 9, factions would just be ridiculously watered down blah-ness.  The "magic" ingredient is the odd number of opponents.  with only two sides, if one is a lot more popular than the other....the game basically blows.  If you have  another faction, the smaller ones have the ability to team up against the larger ones.  Christ, if mythic could do it 10 years ago, I'm sure someone could manage it now instead of all this watered down stuff we get these days.

Building a character is the only sliver of RPG left in MMO's now....taking that away is no different than just making one really, really big server for an FPS.

Get rid of character building...even though people make their characters exactly alike....take away the ability to level, and you might as well not waste your money developing the game. I don't think anyone would play it.
