I just happened upon this article here: http://swtorrc.tumblr.com/post/5248694254/what-that-0-01-might-be  where it talks about what that small percentage could be that would extend SWTORs development cycle so that it releases in Calendar Year 2012, instead of 2011 as they are predicting.  The article is copies below:

What that 0.01% might be

Currently we have discovered that there is a 0.01% chance of the shipment/release of Star Wars:The Old Republic falling into January 2012. This chance is referring to catastrophic events, like these:

  •
  • Bothans steal the launch plans;
  • Companion’s AI program achieves sentience;
  •

What reasons do you think they'll have to delay the launch?

I Lol'd.  Skynet'd

Not gonna see that much anymore, games cater to the lowest common denominator to get the largest player base. I am sorry, you sir, are throwing off the grading curve.

Honestly, I think characters are becoming too easy to change as it is.  No one wants to pay for a mistake forever, but being able to change every 3 seconds, while novel at first, is just killing any recognition really.  Being able to change classes on a whim altogether is just going too far, in my opinion.

Rift is pushing the limit as is.

they stated their reason and to be honest its a stupid reason ,causing much more pain then any good.

Do they honestly think Sony  will drop their lawsuit against fellow hacker now?

It makes things even worse for that hacker now because every co operation and certainly every game company will now be behind sony to push on with the lawsuit .

Think about it .its exactly same reason why people do not give in to hijackers. Some hijackers actually are demanding (espically in 1970s) release of freedom fighters who were fighting for their homeland  but its generally accepted you never give in because they will just be more hijackers.

if anything this will make the government take a harder stance on hackers.no more few months in prison or even a job to track fellow hackers.Real hard time in a proper prison

Actually, the lawsuit with GeoHot has already been settled. They came to an agreement.

Ugh...catacombs was ok'ish...but New Frontiers destroyed PvP....bleh.

that email isn't about trying to get you to re-sub, it's an apology for messing up the world event.  Basically, stage 2 of the world event lasted about 30 minutes, therefore a lot of people missed out on it and didn't get a chance to participate.  Trion sent out the gift bags as an apology, and so that people had a chance to get some loot from the event.

QFT   Such a smart guy, that Sovrath.

I'm also closer than I appear when seen in a rearview mirror.

I'll have to remember that if we ever have the pleasure of meeting on the PvP field......

Does the population really matter to the theme park genre of games anymore. instanced battle grounds with people from other servers. Instanced dungeons withthe same. The population you see will only be in the towns. it's not like you need anyone to quest so really why ask this question. MMOs are heading towardds  the single player mentality. All anyone wants anymore is to see someone run by, know it's a person but god forbid they want to group together to take your xp/loot.

The only game that comment of yours is relavent to is WoW, WAR does not wrk that way, at all.

Well, it applies to more games than WoW, but for WAR, population matters if you are RvRing at end game, if you're doing endless trial and just doing the battlegrounds it's kind of a moot point.

As far as I can find there has been nothing new on it since last year, but there may not be until summer since the rumor was that it was to be released in late 2011.

They said late 2011, so late 2012 or 2013 would probably be a better bet for it...unless they are going to churn out pure garbage.  Pretty much every MMO I have ever followed came out at least a year, closer to two after the initial proposed release date...I'm just sayin.  Either way it is a bit early in development for any real info. I wouldn't expect to hear much for another 6 months or so.

The "bad graphics" argument is like kid bullys with poor imagination resorting to using looks as a source of mockery. Like "your fat" or "your ugly". Childish.

I don't actually recall anyone saying the graphics are bad....but referring to the video making the graphics look bad....which it did.  Anyone who has played WoW in the last 3 years knows the graphics are better than what that video depicts.

That seems reasonable Digna-but what happens when the politicians determine that 4 hours a day total is a "safe" number of hours for them to play.  Or that perhaps they shouldnt play on weekends since "family time" is more precious.  I am not sure how trusting politicians to make decisions about how we spend our time is a good path to go down.

That said-I could careless what happens in South Korea -but there have been stirrings of similar rules here-see San Fran banning toys from Happy Meals.

San Francisco is its own creature. I lived in the area for several years, and coming from somewhere other than San Franciso....they make the most ridiculous laws and focus on unimportant things while important things run rampant. They make laws where walking down the street and smoking is illegal, but they won't arrest you for smoking a Joint. They'll make laws about what types of grocery bags you can use, but turn illegal immigrants back onto the street after arresting them with no jail time served so they can commit more crimes...San Francisco is not a good example of government.

People might look funny at the Koreans trying to govern how much time people can spend online...but then again..I don't recall hearing many western stories about people dying in internet cafe's because they refuse to log off long enough to eat, sleep, go to the bathroom, etc.

Koreans have a different mindset that is frightening when it comes to gaming.  Probably has something to do with the popularity of Grinders over there too. Not saying I'm really happy with legislating how you play games...but....it's a different beast there.

DAOC and EVE, 2 games that got crafting right. Not because of their interesting mechanics but rather because the goods you make are extremely useful to the player base.

Which sums up why I dislike crafting.  I personally found crafting quite repetitive so I hated doing it, yet I also hated how some games put you at the whim of serious crafters who only received enjoyment from crafting because it gave them a sense of self worth and power over people who chose not to partake in it.

I think there should be a compromise.  There should be some easier crafting skills that are useful that people can do...like cooking, or learning skills to break down item drops into usable crafting components, etc.

But I don't think everyone in the game should be a legendary weaponsmith, or armorer or spellcrafter etc.

For some of the more heavy duty crafting...it SHOULD be a process to get there.  Honestly, I don't see a way to get around some of the tediousness without cheapening it.

If all I have to do to be a master swordsmith is do a few easy skill ups and buy a recipe...what's the point of even doing it, because everyone else can too.

Would also be nice if crafters were needed, rather than be added to a game like pvp usually is....as an afterthought so they can put it on the features list.

Yeah, one of my most memorable moments in MMO's came from crafting, in a way.  It was DAOC, I was still low level...guild needed me to run out to the mile keep at 3am because I was the only one on with the woodworking skill to fix the door.  I had to run, hide and sneak my way across the frontier, avoiding the purple aggro and enemy players so I could go fix the keep door.

The point isn't my personal adventure, it is simply the fact that I was NEEDED for my crafting skills.  Crafting now is more like a mini game money sink that isn't necesary, which makes me not want to waste time doing it.

Look at game dev's like Mythic.   DAOC had a very tedious crafting system, that quite honestly most of us who got to LGM probably macro'd at some point in time.  However, crafting served a purpose.  Every guild needed crafters who could make %100 qual weapons and armor, who could do spell crafting, who had enough skill to repair keep doors and there was a lot of money to be made breaking down drop weapons that nobody wanted.

Now, enter Mythic again, when making WAR.  They decided to do away with any crafting that made any sense, and the crafting they DID put in was very easy, but wasn't needed by the community at all really.  they focused so hard on making crafting less tedious that it was useless. People didn't want to do it because it was hard, so they made it super easy, and nobody wants to do it because it has been made either superfluous, or useless because it is so easy anyone can skill it up.

Crafting is suppose to be hard, in my opinion. If it was easy, everyone would do it, making there be no demand for crafters, meaning you couldn't make any money doing it, so what is the point of doing it at all?  Put that on top of the fact that in pretty much every game I've played in the last 10 years, you could take crafting out completely and no one would notice. They can just go run that dungeon(for the 14th time on a different difficulty level) and get the phat lootz. /shrug

Oh, and if anyone thinks the way games are launched today is totally different from games of the past, I've some land in Florida I'd like to talk to you about....

So...what's wrong with land in Florida....I live in Florida and I can assure you there is land here. :cP

Many of these things have been pet peeves of mine regardless of being an indie developer or a AAA studio.

First thing: Why is it that ANYTIME a game is introduced, we, as players know to add two years to the release date that the studio gives us.  How is it that a bunch of gamers know, that if you say your game is coming out next year, that really means we won't see it until at least 2 years after you promise it?  If your project management is so bad that you can't even get a realistic timeline, my faith in your abilities overall is diminished rapidly.  If this is a publicity ploy...it is a bad one, don't do it. Be Honest.

Second: Why promise gamers all kinds of things when you don't even know if your basic platform works?  Don't brag about stuff you can't deliver.  Seems pretty simple to me, and to thousands of gamers world wide, so how is it that the people actually making these games and planning them can't figure this out?

Oh, btw, just for the OP. Top things I hated about WoW:

The overly simplistic UI and stupid addons for everything, you almost didn't have to actually play the game anymore

The stupid battle grounds, if they're going to have them they could at least change them up once in awhile.

End game F*&%&^$ raiding as the only thing to do other than grind F#$#%#@ battlegrounds.

For the love of....whatever you love.....please make something more interesting.  Dungeons are fun once in awhile, but do people REALLY want to grind the same crud over and over again?  3 hour instanced pvp on a playground? how is that even fun?

Disclaimer: All of the above is my personal opinion, and does not reflect the opinion of anyone else....unless they happen to agree with me.

See, the thing is OP, for most of your points, what you see as a plus in WOW (and a negative in the other game is simply a matter of opinion, and many players don't care for how WOW has done some things.  I'll elaborate:

1) Many casual MMO players tell you they don't have time for longer term gameplay experiences, they want to be able to get in/out in a very short time, usually under 2 hours.  I noticed Rift designed their end game raiding (at normal levels) to be done in less than an hour.  Seems to be the preference of the majority of the gamers, which even Blizzard decided to follow.

2) Totally personal preference on this one.  I myself definitely prefer realistic physics on my characters and it just looks plain silly to me to see a character on-handing a Longsword above their head.  In fact, what you prefer is why many people decry WOW and say it looks too cartoony.  (think Looney Tunes and the large oversize hammers and stuff used there)

3) Another preference item, you prefer high fantasy, with fantastic looking Armors while other folks prefer a grittier and more realistic look.  And for some of us, we're not really that impressed with "game" gear, I never think to myself, boy do I look awesome. I just care about the stats it imparts but again, that's just me.

4) Controls - Not  a preference issue, WOW clearly has a great control system (dare I say unequalled?)

5)  End Game raiding - What theme park MMO's have left this out?  Rift has it, Aion has it. If anything too many games have it.  I despise end game raiding and would prefer to play MMOs that didn't have it at all.  The term "end game" shouldn't even exist.(IMHO)  So your assertion that "every" MMO should have it is a personal one.  Clearly my personal preference and not one that you and most others (apparently) share

6) It is true, there are many benefits to a FvF system, not the least being having a big team to come help you.  But I haven't seen that really work since the early days of WOW and back in DAOC.  There's little realm pride these days, mostly because gamers (and games) are so anti-social, most folks hate "strangers' in MMO's today and things definitely seem more small group (clan, guild, alliance) oriented and FFA is actually superior in these Us vs the world situation.

I was going to make a big 'ole post on this...but I can sum it up with ^^^^^what he said.
