I am sorry, but DnD is not to blame for the current state of MMOs. There is in fact a flaw in MMO being made today and that flaw is the simple fact that developers are giving us (the players) exactly what we asked for. We are curretly reaping what we have been sowing for years with endless forum threads about forced grouping and games being to hard and unfair drop rates and leveling being to slow, yes sir "that MMO" that is damaging the genre is exactly what we asked for it to be.

Ding Ding Ding! We have a winner folks! Give that fan a teddy bear!

EDIT: THe game uses words for genitals and human waste materials EXCESSIVELY. While I don't mind it once and then, it seems every 3rd sentence is like some sailor is supposed to talk. When even Kings can't use a single sentence without talking about feces or genitals... it's just absurd and disgusting.

Well, tbh kings using "flowery" speech is a thing typical for fantasy. Historically, kings were nothing like they are portrayed in official chronicle entries, which where usually written by their request and where simply propaganda.
What is more, kings where known for their harsh manners, the ability to quickly lose temper etc. In addition, in most cases in Witcher kings appear in not very public situations, like eg. parades, but during battles or small conversations where they are not bound by any protocols.
In addition, I'd like to point out, that the author who wrote the original Witcher story is interested in mixing history and fantasy, and this is why the themes in witcher are more gritty and dark and all characters are shades of grey instead of being good and bad. If you go and read history books you won't find many clealy black and white characters - every historical character is judged differently by different authors and that is I think what the developers of the Witcher wanted to convey.

Dude, I have a university degree in history. I know the REAL Middle Ages were bleak and... well terrible. That's why we have fantasy. As I see it in our world people are devolving back into medieval behaviour patterns again. Why would I WANT that?
I want to be the good guy, save the day, slay the monster, get the prince and have my statue in the kingdom and everyone lived happily everafter. I mean, being Shreck only is fun so many times, ya know. Or: Wolverine was cool before EVERY hero was turned into a Wolverine. It loses it's coolness when ALL is dark. Has to do with contrast and storytelling.

It pretty much just sounds like the themes and ideas and overall design of this game is not for you (gritty, realistic, vulgar, hard). It is fine if you do not like it. Just don't play it. Why do you feel the need to complain about it? It isn't for you. Play something that is.

Edit:

Also, the statement that there is no RPG element is patently false, and a little ridiculous.

I would love to see SOE take over cryptic and do some changes to STO.   Turbine should be dead last in the running.

I'll never touch NeverWinter if SOE gets involved.  I'm not that happy that Cryptic is involved.  Cryptic + SOE= #nailinthecoffin.

I'm not saying older gamestyles requiring grouping were necessarily better, but you HAD to talk to people, or you weren't going to accomplish anything.  Games are so easy now that you can solo your way to cap level.  Try doing that in a game like DAOC or EQ and it would take you years if you didn't quit from frustration first.

Times are different now, everyone wants McDonalds rather than a sit down restuarant, but people sat down at dinner and talked, now everyone grabs a cheeseburger from the drive thru and heads off down the road.  Symptom of the times, unfortunately.

In short, the only thing that would make me play ANY mmo long term would be a good guild/community.  Without that, boredom sets in after a month or two, doesn't matter what game it is.

Those days were fun, but I think they are long dead, unfortunately.  The instant gratification crowd wins in todays MMO world.  Get use to more WoW with shinier graphics, it's all you're gonna get.

For one, I would like to see real reviews, about 6 months into the game, with people that have played for that long.  Anything else should just be labeled "first impression" or "preview."

I think it would be interesting to see it from diffeent angles too.  I'd like to see a group oriented pve person, who will get a lot of guild play, a solo/casual pve type, a pvp person and sandbox versus theme park type of people.  This way you would see a perspective of the game from different play styles, and people could see, more or less from their play style point of view, whether they may be interested in the game or not.  So I guess a series of reviews to get an overall big picture would be kind of cool.

I'm not super excited about anything coming out, but Star Wars might be interesting.  I think it will be fun for a couple months at least.  Who knows.

lets face facts here. If games like this were remade today. they would be nothing like what they were before. they'd be made to fit todays current player base. A watered down version of a game you've played 100 times already.

which is what killed  DAOC. People say it was Trials of Atlantis, but really I think it was the fact that They turned pvp into easymode that killed it.

I can understand making pve fairly easy in DAOC, as the real end game was PvP, with a dungeon raid thrown in once in awhile. Instand travel and catering to the instant gratification crowd  killed PvP.

If they made a modernized version of DAoC 1, then I would be all for it. They just have to make sure they don't take out much of anything and leave it be. This is the MMO I've played then longest as it had the most for me to keep coming back to.

They'd have to get rid of new frontiers easymode insta travel for me to even consider it.  That killed RvR and turned into a bunch of mages standing around launching fireballs at each other.

Only open world pvp I ever saw in WoW since Vanilla and pre battle grounds is higher levels ganking lowbies. No real pvp though.

Only time that ever happened to me was the Hordes of the Underdark expansion for Neverwinter Nights.  I would spend more time making level 15 characters with prestige classes than I would playing.

It seemed to me that the problem WAR had was that the open world PvP was unpopular rather than that instanced PvP was popular.  I heard a number of people say that they did not like the scenarios but that world PvP in the game was even worse.

When I PvP it is as a test of skill so world PvP has little appeal to me since it emphasizes skills and tactics that have little appeal to me.  For me world PvP has little meaning since I can do what I want to do much better in a battleground.

The key to good world PvP seems to be to give the participants a meaning to their conflicts.  However, different  players will seek different meaning in their encounters and you have to figure out which of these player types you want to tap into.

The problem with WAR open world pvp was that they made two factions. If one side had a lot more people, they'd just play hide and seek all day instead of PvP.  Made no sense to only have two factions.  They commited a cardinal sin and only added real pvp in after beta testers threatened to dismember them.  For a company who made one of the most revered pvp games out there, they sure dropped the ball on WAR

I'm still having fun with it....but I only play about twice a week.  I'd be capped out if I played every day.

I actually found the graphics quite acceptable. One has the choice of the original avatar graphics (which are not acceptable) or a newer designed avatar graphic.

One can lose themselves in the world if they allow themselves that pleasure.

My issue with the game came more from the skills. For the short time  I tried the game I couldn't quite figure out what my skills were actually doing. So I ended up spamming skills as they came available.

It was also a little difficult for me to assign points. I think initially I assigned some points to single handed sword abilities when it wasn't needed for my chanpion.

still, one would see announcements of x keep being taken so there is a group of die hard fans playing this game.

It's a steep learning curve, but the skills in DAOC have way more depth and skill requirement than any other game I've played since.  Unfortunately after DAOC every thing is WoW GCD's...even WAR went that route.  Skills build off of each other in chains, you have reactional skills, positional skills....it was very complex, but beat the hell out of the "1,2,3,4" you get now.

I think a dungeon finder tool is fine, but I don't want to ever see anything that is cross server. I'd rather see server mergers.

I can't speak for all servers, but on Kaleida (pvp) I log on at odd times, like early in the morning or really late at night, and rarely have problems finding people to do stuff.  If there aren't enough people to slam rifts, I'll do battle grounds for awhile and work on quests while que'ing up.  I DID have to leave my original guild though, because I think I might be the only active player left in it, but I found another guild quickly while playing one of my alts.  I'm sure some servers are suffering population drop of some sort, it's natural, but surely ALL of the servers are not having issues.

Can't speak for two months from now, but I'm happy with the current scenario at the moment.

This is just what SOny would want to avoid. These are just a bunch of politicians using their power to play big boys on a bench to ask questions and seem relavent in our country about everything that does not concern them. Last time I checked Business is a single entity structure that does not have rules engaging them into a government plan of model workings.

Government wants to get it's head into everyones business. Sony is doing the right thing here not going in front of a congressional hearing, simply by saying we are our business and we are doing what we know to fix this, we don't need you slowing us down and preventing us from reaching our goal.

All these guys want to do anyway is just PRE smear businesses or people in an attempt to control people. Just like how they did with MLB and the whole steroid thing, they spent millions on that and for what? Less government and more control to the people I say.

I wish they would make a game where players play as the bad guys. I don't mean bad guys that wanna destroy the world I mean more take over the world types. Or maybe have a game that has 2 factions the good and bad together. Where depending on what side you choose you got the good or evil side. That would be awesome I think.

What I actually want to see, is a game with three factions, where everyone is the bad guy, and the good guys are all npc's. Bring the wild wild west/ dark ages back to games.

Give factions a meaning, not working to the same goals with political disagreements.  Why not make all factions hate each other, and the only reason they would be attacking the same NPC's is for control and power, not to save the world.

In the end, it is mostly semantics, a different story laid over a similar structure, but it just seems to make more sense to me, to be honest.

Lagged Again - DAOC

Trinsic Borrowers - UO

I remember Lagged Again! Those mids were vicious with their Savages.  Went head to head with them quite a few times when scouting for KoS and TNO.  Ah...the golden days of Lancelot server.   THAT'S what I miss in MMO's. Back when you could actually make a name for yourself.

Seemed in those days most of the good PvP guilds were on Midgard and Hibernia on Lancelot, while Albion had huge Zerg guilds that were a whole other challenge.  Wish another game like that would come out where you could build a name for your guild, or as an individual.  Really miss the days of hunting down specific players/guilds in PvP.  Sometimes we'd go set fire to a bunch of keeps just to draw them out.

On that note, on the Hibernian side I'd have to say KoS in their heyday were well known, Mistwraith, Dhead and the others.  I don't think they are running anymore.  TNO was pretty kick ass too on the Hibernian side.  I met the GM Cyce at a BBQ in Los Angeles, and would run with them on occasion afterwards, until WoW and SWG came out...which pretty much put the nail in the coffin of DAOC.
