Well, I think that your opinion seems to be a somewhat common one but it's rather misinformed.  First, I wouldn't exactly recommend a new player jump right into mining and/or trade without a good deal of research and reading first.  It's just not the strongest starting point for someone who hasn't played the game before or doesn't have friends to help them get a "crash course".  Here are my responses to your specific points:

1.  The idea that it takes months to skill up enough to participate is really not true.  Considering the skill and ability jump-start you get as a new character, you're given pretty good resources to get into the swing of things with only minor time invested.  You can easily be flying a cruiser with a good loadout of equipment and millions of ISK in the bank in less than a month.  You can do missions, mine (thought not necessarily in low-security space), and do a lot of trade and manufacturing if that's your favor.

2.  While the players ahead of you may have more skill points in total, their actual difference in EFFECTIVE SKILL will not be that significant.  For example, there are many skills that give perhaps a 2 or 3 percent bonus per level.  It's going to take exponentially more time to get that 5th skill level, but all the other person might have on you is a couple percentage points.  Much of the game comes down to equipment on your ship and the equipment types on the ship(s) you're battling.  A couple "newbies" could take out a veteran in a ship of the same class.

3.  Not everyone likes to mine.

4.  Tackling (which is EVE's equivalent of tanking I believe), is not everyone's role.  It really depends on the ship you're using.  The ships in EVE are much like classes would be in other MMO's.  There are ships with stealth, some with high shields/armor, some with close-range damage, and others with long-range.  The tactics you use depend on your skills and most importantly, the ship you're flying at the moment.

5.  While you're waiting for your next skill to train (which, as a new player, should not be getting level 5 skills), you could always do missions, trade, mine, pirate, or do factional warfare if you don't like standard PvP.  Make yourself some ISK to invest in better equipment if you feel outmatched.  While your AFK time in EVE can still be productive, it's not true or necessary that you spend months training skills offline so you can "compete".  You're not able to grind up to the most powerful ship in the game within your first month.  The game isn't like WoW where you can just plow your way through content and get up in levels so you can be "the best".

It's more a game of strategy, tactics, and patience.  If you're in a hurry, or are the type who wants to grind for a month straight to the "end game", then it's not a good choice.  What I would recommend to a new player is to read a lot, and ask LOTS of questions.  The rookie help channel and your starter NPC corporation chat are good places to start.  The game CAN get boring, but you have the ability to change what you're doing.

Just want to make a little correction about EW in eveonline :

In EVE parlance, a "tackler" is any ship fitted with a module or modules designed for inhibiting another player's ability to warp. Hence, tacklers are any ship setups whose main purpose in a battle is to stop the enemy from escaping, and either avoid the fleet or potentially regroup in a more favourable position.

just didnt want everyone getting misleaded on what a tackler does in eve

I play old schools games alright like golden axe , carnage  and diablo2 , but these games were the best we could get in the years they were made graphic wise i understand what people are trying to say when they talk about DF ... but the gameplay is good is that your only criteria for a good game ? i hope not

i played shadowbane when it came out and this game had bad graphics but it make me think what DF is trying to do because of pvp , SB had the best pvp i ever played imo and the classes were so unique the way you could play with them anyways the point is , even though DF seem like a game with strong gameplay feature they should not be the only reason to play a game were in 2008 people and bad graphics and animations are  no excuse.

this game remind me of shadowbane and roma victor very bad visuals and expect people to play the game because of pvp and some open lot system that rubbish go play eve instead and feel the pain of loss .

EVE = waste of time

waste of time for you for many it's one very good sandbox game where your free to shape the universe .

of course eve does not hold your hand and tell you what you do but it's a great game for the right person

am a beta eve player so when i see posts like this it boggles my mind how quick kids are to bash games

if you dont like fine we understand but dont call it a waste of time because it isnt maybe runescape was better for you ??

now let me make this clear, this game sucks,it sucks,it just sucks, got it?

its not even close to the best free game

it looks like shit, only thing it has is gore, and some rag-doll effect from the havoc engine, and if you like this game only for these 2 things you are a dumbass redneck who somehow got a hold of a pc,and by a miracle learned the basics of how to use it in a year

muonline is motherf***ing better, yah that's right even in 2008 mu is f***in better than this piece of shit game, and not muonline where u actually p2p, free muonline global where u got only 3 mofo servers to login, and p2p users get all the good stuff

you want some good games, well go play cabal, perfect world,2moons(this one has a lot of bot-ers tough),and cabal and 2moons got overpriced cash shops,in 2moons u pay as much as another guy pays/moth to get a reskill, you get a free one,but only one,and if you wana have top skills at all lvls you cant reskill only once

cabal tough doesn't need reskills, but it olso doesn't really need party's,unless ur high lvl,and even then u can't take you're time an chat in a party cause you will be combo-ing and shit, else everybody dies

i left this game after i tried to catch up to somebody and make a 24h skill train,my eyes hurt for like 3 days after that, now that fucking sucked,

and perfect world is like this:quest,quest.. quest quest quest, and some other quests and almost nothing else till you get sick of it,u get to a point where you got arrows pointing in every direction of the map, cause you got quests, and you have to do em,cause u can't lvl with no quests(it makes playing with friends almost impossible, cause its very hard for everyone to have the same motherf***in quest all the time)

now better yet go outside, don't play any mmo and have fun

now i tryed everything and they all suck monkey balls in their own way,p2p,f2p they both suck, suck the life out of you, just play something that's casual or don't play at all

why are you mad ? lol

try Ryzom it's a mix of fantasy and sci-fi , enviroments are nice and the gameplay is very flexible as you can switch roles as you please healer, fighter, caster ....

anyways i think it good plus it has a very deep crafting system.

Now now fanboys, I'm just stating my opinion. Honestly though, I was in closed beta for many months, and I literally stopped playing cold turkey about a month ago. The reasons for this were many. The game is just so bland and boring overall. Combat is stiff and unexciting, just plain unoriginal. Classes are uninteresting and not engaging. Animations are craptastic, seriously, it cannot be denied the way characters run is just unacceptable. The world design is so linear it kills me (this is a serious down side for me personally, as it was in AoC). Graphics are downright outdated,  though honestly this wouldn't be a factor if the gameplay were fun (Lineage 1 for example, which was 2d, kicked ass).

Now I'd really like to hear from some other long time Closed Beta testers, or just players in general. To me, this game is unoriginal, bland, and boring. I would never spend a cent on it.

P.S. the reason I'm even posting this is to save some people some money, is all. Also, to stop those who are super-hyped about it from being let down big time. It probably is not what you are expecting. Take it from a long, long term MMORPG player.

I tried every major mmo out there since 1999 and i even played dark age of camelot and you know what am 100% confident War ganna be a winner so i'll be there at the head start and you wont your lost bud .

Also , they will simply have to bring back the empire tank class or the game will crumble.

I agree the melee tanks that destruction have is quite scary .

I totally agree agree with Enigma , you guys are smoking some good stuff .

Some of you  haved played way too much warcraft and have never seen anything else but wow , first mmo maybe ??

I for myself been playing these game since dawn of everquest and dont understand all these reference to wow , anything that come out that new compared again to wow .

i get these posts about classes what do they compared them too ? , guess what wow again lol.

i used to play warhammer on PNP for years even before warcraft even existed so usiing wow as a reference is just plain dumb.

aye the tanks classes are nice in war , just wished healers didnt work so much with melee to be effective , specially when you cant get close enough to melee and get some healing power to oyur heals and such .

well anyhow i'll still go with the warrior priest at launch had quite some fun with him in the scenarios

i think healing will be very problematic in war , because alot of players dont understand how they work in war am sure mythic will make changes to this .

I remember when i first started playing doac way back and started getting into guilds in the game and they brough me  to a relic raid , at the time i was no way a pvper at all , boy did it give me the spark .

all i can say is that even if your not into full blown pvp warhammer and mythic set it up in a way it's easy to take part of it casually or whenever u feel like it .

i think they do it right , taking a keep is so much fun and more of course
