U can compare SWG and WoW all u want. It doesn't matter. We all have our perceptions on how this game is going. And with some people their personal feelings are going to get in the way. WoW is a juggernaught! its widly popular and I doubt SWG ever had the numbers that WoW does. although for some reason WoW plays alot like SWG.

And I would agree that this game was miss-handled. but if SOE was not making money off this game they would have closed the doors along time ago. Like when the subposidly 200K subers cancelled and crashed the server. Or when there was the SECOND mass exodas when WoW came out(along with the multitude of other games that have come out)

Sony is making money and Uncle George is making money. as long as thats happening then the game lives on.

I believe that its kinda impossible to compare SWG and WoWs population. 1 game is 4 years old and is still super popular, one is 6 years old and doesn't have the marketing that WoW has.

I feel bad for the SWG vets. Loving a game as much as you did to have it changed. I am sure that SOE took the hit when the lot of you quit. But from my guildy's(played both PRE CU to Current)  to my current G/F have told me up untill this last year the population has gone down.

I have seen new people log in and I have seen people quit.

I do believe that if your a vet waiting to hear that this game is closing do to lack of subs your going to wait for a long time.

Personally I think its time to do an SWG II and take it to the next level make it so everyone loves it....not that you can make everyone happy.

AS for my post earlyer where I said ALL I HEAR IS WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! I was joking but a mod didn't think so. So to all I offended I was joking. sorry to have offended. but seriously guys.....you do need to let it go. and be alittle more positive in your posts.

As for this thread I think its time to lock it with all the flamming going on.

Hello,

I'm going into my junior year of high school and I'm starting to think about what I want to do after college(I.E. career i want.)

My options as of late are history or phychology teacher, animator for either movies or video games, or magazine or video game writer/editor. My dream would be one day to be a successful game developer, but that dream is one that is difficult to attain and i don't hold much regard for it coming true.

To give you some backround knowledge of myself, I took a peronality test that is near 90% true to me. Analyze it and tell me what career you think i should pursure in any field.

"You like working and being alone. You like to avoid attention at all costs. You tend to keep to yourself, and not interact much with the people around you. You enjoy spending time with a few a close friends. You like to listen to others, but don't like sharing much about yourself. You are very quiet and private.

You are very practical, and only act after thinking things through. You don't like being forced to answer quickly. You have to evaluate the situation completely. You make decisions based on what you can verify with your senses.

You like to be deeply involved in one or two special projects. You like to be behind the scenes. You are very logical and fair. You feel you should be honest with others and protect their feelings.

You trust your gut instincts. You are easily inspired and trust that inspiration. You are very innovative. You analyse things by looking at the big picture. You are concerned about how what you do affects others. You worry about your actions and the future. You tend to use a lot of metaphors and are very descriptive and colourful in your choice of language.

You are very creative, and get bored easily if you don't get to express yourself. You like to learn new things. You don?t like the same old routine. You like to leave your options open."

So please, leave a comment below and tell my what type of job you think i suitably fit most, thank you and well appriciated ahead of time.

Sounds to me like you would make a great detective. Homocide maybe?

Weird that you say its better then ever, I just went back for the free 30 days and guess what not a soul in sight. This game is dead, let it die and get over yourself.

It helps if you open your eyes when you play. you would see other players! I think your the one that needs to "get over" your self. and get over the fact that this game is not going anywhere

MS did not own the rights. they owned the hardware. when MS got out of hosting.....Turbine didn't want to buy the hardware. they bought the hardware from MS to continue hosting AC. SO Turbine probably doesn't want to spend the money on setting all up again to make anything

Just because you hate it and quit along with the other 200k people that did doesn't make it a failure.

I can say with out a doubt Sony and Lucas arts would have droped this like a bad date if it was failing. how long ago did the NGE patch drop? how long has it been going? 6 years? and still going? think about it......

I think SWG is doing fine too, but you have to be a little more understanding of the people who were not able to recover after the NGE.

I went through a similar experience with UO many years ago when the game moved to loot based items from crafter based, I left the game and have not been able to pick it up since, despite returning on a veteran trial it just wasn't the game I remembered.

The NGE was the most traumatic experience in gamer history that I can think of, I certainly don't blame anyone for still harbouring a grudge.  I don't think I ever got over it myself, the anger I had from that day still drives me on to make sure it never happens again.

Badger your obviously the voice of reason. I agree with every post you make. and again your right. I like you dude yur always positive

I keep saying it. I love this game. I played pre-cu  pre-nge.....I hated it. I have been playing a couple of months now. I love it! its been a blast. the other night I was a gunner in a gun ship and had sooo much fun!!

I can understand why some people.....the Pre NGE vets... have issues with the game now. Things changed in EvE all the time since beta. alot of the cool things about EvE changed....hard to go solo ganking now. but I still love the game.

I think the vets feel betrayed because they lost their uberness. but I must say I have never seen a more bitter bunch! you all have become the laughing stock of this site!

I am sure what you say about some vets is "true" but for many others, like me, it isn't. Glad you like the current SWG, too bad you didn't like the old SWG, many, many more people did.

I am not a critic of SOE and the current game because i lost my "uberness", as you put it, but everything that was taken from the game the majority of people (who ever played SWG) liked better than the current bells and whistles, many of which don't even work correctly. I am a critic of SOE's handling of SWG bucause of what the game currently is and how it became that way.

Know how much I miss my "uberness"? I gave away my trader acc, a year and some back, with 4 billion (yes, with a "b") and an extra elder jedi slot. With 25% of those credits you could buy the best stuff in game several times over and be "uber" in the current game. That isn't the point. The point is who cares about being the "best" at anything in a bad game, or one that the most ardent supporter can not deny is in decline. The best (and the most functional) parts of the current game (and ones that supporters point to) are left over from the old days (namely crafting and space). Most things that have been "added" by the various devs since then, are neither as good, or work as well. What does that say?

I had a heck of lot more fun being an "average" player in a great game, than being a "powerful" player in a relatively shallow, linear, "iconic" game that SWG has become.

But its like I said one mans trash is another mans gold. you can't make everyone happy....obviously

But you sure can piss off most of 200k with one "patch". And have so many quit and trying to quit that it crashes the acct server.

SOE ably demonstrated that one.

Those few people SOE seems to be able to make happy with SWG, are growing fewer each week, plenty of threads about that on the o-boards. That being the current state of the current game. Seems that the de facto server merges were less than successful, with people on several destination servers wanting the free ride off. Oh, wait, they must be do that to search for the Gold you mentioned. /not

Only a matter of time until SWG gets the MxO treatment.

Couldn't tell you. Other than they don't want to spend the time or money to make it happen.

I am affraid that the AC franchise is a dead issue since the debaucle of AC 2. You can't blame Turbine though, it was Microsofts fault for pushing AC 2 out the door before they were ready.

We are stuck with the old AC forever!

In most cases, no one likes dying in their game. Whether it's having to run back to your corspe as a ghost, losing stuff, losing exp., or having to start back at your homebase, it's never fun to get wasted. However, what happens when you take the punishing aspects away from dying in a game? I shall present three different levels of punishment, and who would like them or not.

1. Light punishment.

You don't lose much (if anything at all), so when you die, don't worry, you won't drop that +5 sword. Mostly, casuals flock to these games like flies to a light source. This type of dealth penalty in a game gives a sense of more comfort rather than fear of being ambushed, thus the less hardcore gamer would appreciate this setting.

Pros: You're at more ease when playing.

Cons: Sure, you'll avoid getting wasted next time, but some people just like the thought that they have to be on their guard 24/7 to make sure that thief doesn't steal from them. It's not paranoia, it just brings thrill to the game. If you could easily lolligag through the game, well, where's the challenge in that?

2. Regular punishment

You lose some things when you die. This is a striking balance of punishment between light and severe, which can appeal to both casual and hardcore gamers.

Pros: It appeals to a wider variety of gamers.

Cons: It's not light enough for people that like the light death punishment, and it's not punishing enough for hardcores.

3. Rogue-like punishment.

A long time ago, a game existed called Rogue. This game brought an interesting concept which was not seen at its time. When you died, the death penalties were severe. You lost everything you were holding at the time, lost all your exp. you had gained fighting in the dungeon, and had to start back at the homebase. It was a death penalty designed to make you cry. Rogue-likes are games based on that concept and are turnbase-strategy based, but nowadays any game with this type of strict death penalty can owe its' thanks to Rogue, the first of its kind. It takes serious bravado (or a self-abusive personality) to play and love this kind of punishment in a game.

Pros: Like I said earlier, masochistic and self-abusive gamers will appeal to this.

Cons: Everyone else will definitely shy away from this type of punishment. Also, if there isn't any level restrictions in pvp, then high levels will usually rule the game by killing off everyone else and stealing whatever drops, which scares newbies from wanting to play the game.

In my opinion, there are way too many games out there with the light death punishment type. It does attract casuals, but what ever happened to strict death punishments? What are your thoughts?

Eve-Online. You die, you lose pretty much everything (particularly if you are ina good ship with a good fitting. That 'everything' can represent your whole net worth, and will usually represent a sizeable chunk

If there was any one who knows more about dying its most definatly Lallante!! he has lost more ships than any one in Curse Alliance!!! thats right Lallante I am exposing you!!! YOU HOOKER!!!!

WhyTF are we seeing another thread about this???? Its old news. Violate the EULA get banned that simple. rip off your friends in game......don't have friends anymore! simple as that. he got a life time ban.

EvE is and will be a giant gank fest if its not isk its loot. I can not count how many times I have seen people get ganked in one way or another....flyin afk in low sec space only to lose everything they owned or transporting corp loot to get ganked and lose everything. its a game people and you are not your ship or corp. so get over it

Looks lame. Like an out-dated Nintendo game.

The macros are not nearly the issue they once were, for a couple reasons. First is there are now many places for good xp, which means less crowding. Second is that leveling is significantly easier then it was way back in the day, so less people feel macroing is necessary to get to the top.

It really is a solid game and they continue to give brand new content every month, which is a nice perk that other games do not have. Basically if you managed to get caught up and try every piece of content in the game, you'd only have to wait until the next patch to try some more. But I still doubt more then a handfull of people in AC have actually completed all the content.

trial.ac.turbine.com

I don't think that I can do all the new stuff as a new character. there is just too much to do.

Go play Pong or Wii!

Please tell me how UCMs effected you? Did they prevent you from hunting? You could have joined the UCM fellowships, they are open to everyone.

It seems most people are just jealous of the UCMs gaining xp and loot. It's not like you couldn't UCM. The program was freely available to all.

I do agree the game would be better if everyone played legit. However, it's difficult to discourage people from macroing because of the way AC is designed; The static, fast spawns in dungeons give a lot of xp. Also the best items are from killing monsters.

Turbine could completely ban Decal, but Decal provides too many other benefits that make up for ACs inadequacies. For example, ACs in game map is crappy, so navigating is difficult. Decal provides better navigation plugins. There is no easy way to keep track of quests or find quests in AC. Decal provides plugins to suggest quests and track which quests you have done. Decals provides a tradebot plugin. So, we really have player run shops thanks to Decal.

I play MMP's to interact with living, breathing  players, for some reason playing with a scripted program is not quit the same thing.

I agree. I would rather have to compete against a living breathing player vs a decal scripted player for xp.

I never played AC,despite playing MMOS for almost 10 years now.

I rmember why after reading these posts....I had heard about the macroing that was going on and it turned me off.

Now is the time to play it then. because there is soo much room to hunt any where and every where. the only macroing I saw recently was the buff bots....and I am ok with those. not the leveling bots. but like I said I have not seen any at all.

So I have a hobbie and my hobbie is playing WOW, its great for something to get away with and I do have an 80 and one of the main healers in my raid guild, we are almost finished clearing 25 man. We raid a lot and usually the raids and what not gearing up my character has been getting between me and my GF. Today I think was the last straw when she came over and she was kissing on my neck and what not and I told her could she atleast give me 30 mins, because we were in the middle of a boss fight.

She got mad and left she said this was the last straw it was either her or the game, what do i do?

Dude I had a g/f the love of my life actually who hated EvE with a passion!! never wanted me to play it or Wow for that matter untill her son started playing. I stopped playing EvE lost standing with my game friends because of it.

She is gone but the games still play on. and I found a girl friend that plays games.

In my opinion Girls come and go.....but games live on. if she has an issue with you playing? kick her to the curb because she knew you played comming into the relationship if you change for her than you not the person she fell in love with. and you will find some one that accepts you for who you are.

I found this to be a pretty accurate statement...

================================================================

Gamer Bob says: MMOs suck.

People often credit WoW’s success because, in part, it’s a little bit of everything for everyone (in theory at least), and while that’s a great way to get into the genre, if you really want to focus on any one aspect you soon find WoW is somewhat limited. Yes WoW has PvP, but it’s limited by WoW’s PvE side, Blizzard’s somewhat disinterest in expanding WoW’s PvP, and by the fact that the engine is simply not built for it. Messing around in the BGs or arena is all well and good, but if you really want to PvP you play a game like Guild Wars, DarkFall, or WAR, depending on how far you want to take it. Same goes for the economy; WoW has an auction house and mods built around it, but no one is going to confuse the economic challenges of EVE or ATitD with making gold in WoW. Even for PvE, which is (or should be) WoW’s main focus, other games distill the formula and offer more focused gameplay, like the all-instanced PvE of DDO, the hardcore raiding of FFXI, or the casual do anything nature of CoX.

If we were to break down the MMO genre by category (raiding, PvP, economy, questing, graphics, sound, hardware demands, ect), and rate each game on ALL categories, WoW would likely come out with the highest overall total, yet it would not be the winner in any one single category, making it the jack-of-all-trades or most ‘mass market’ game. This of course is supported by WoW having millions of subs while everyone else is trying to hit 500k (or far less when we throw in more niche games like DF or ATitD).

What’s interesting is that overall, WoW players have NOT progressed from the entry game of the genre into other, more focused offerings. Aside from EVE’s continual growth, the genre as a whole has not seen subscription numbers grow from the height of EQ1’s popularity (500k-ish), and whether a game hits its mark (LotRO) or slightly misses (WAR), subscription numbers don’t vary greatly short of the massive disasters (TR, Hellgate). There are more MMOs out now with 100k+ subscribers than prior to WoW’s release in 2004, but it would appear that the majority of WoW players don’t move on to other games and stay. If anything, they try a game for a month, leave, and either return to WoW or leave the genre altogether.

Tourist jokes aside (not that the tourist problem is a joke, mind you), I’ve come to this brilliant conclusion: MMOs are just not that fun for most people.

I know, shocking.

With all the time we spend going back and forth on how X game is awesome and your MMO sucks, or how game Y would be so much better with feature Z, the majority of gamers are telling of us ALL our games suck. The whole genre, garbage. And in a way they are right. Why in gods name would I pay $15 a month to complete 100 kill x mob quests when I could do far more interesting tasks in a single player RPG? Why would I grind up an imbalanced character so I can PvP ‘sometimes’ when I can just get a FPS for cheap and have all-access to PvP of all flavors?

The ‘why’ of course is because I like MMOs, a lot, but WoW aside (and hence more support for the ‘perfect storm’ theory), most people just don’t. Beyond the 50-500k that WILL buy into your product, everyone else is just not that interested in the core ideas behind the genre, and short of abandoning that core (like Guild Wars does, and perhaps even Free Realms), no matter what you do you won’t attract and keep them. It’s not about how great your questing is, or how balanced the PvP turns out, or what form of character progression you go with, those who are not into the genre just can’t be bothered with the basics, details be damned.

And as long as developers understand this and stop trying to chase those who don’t care, the genre will continue on its path of success or failure based on the details, rather then the core. There is plenty of money to be made off those who DO care, and that base is slowly expanding, it’s just not seeing the massive growth WoW lead people to believe it was capable of.

WoW's success comes from great marketing strat. and the fact that its "Preatty" and attracts the attention of those that never played an mmorpg. ALOT of players never even heard of mmorpgs untill their friends got them into playing wow for the social aspect of the game.

And your missing the point of "1 mans trash is another mans gold!" in other words some people like MMO's others don't Some like end game some don't!

You can't no matter how hard you try make every person happy with a game.

So in my opinion...its not MMO's that suck.....its people suck!!

So I'm curious to know what you the player go about your name and why you choose the name you do. Afterall to me atleast , the name of your character is somewhat of an important aspect of playing the game. It represents you as an individual and gives a layer of meaning to your character. It's also something your stuck with the whole time your playing and have to look at alot and not something that can usually be changed so the decision is a big one. I always have trouble coming up with a name that I can agree on for more than a couple weeks after using it. So how do you the player come up with a name and why that name?

I have been a role player since I was 13 and I am 43 now. SO I tend to use names that I came up with back in the day of Strombringer and AD&D. I can usually make up a name. or if I am being lazy I will use a name gen. BUT I believe half the fun is comming up with something original
