I choose not to play Rift because I'm seriously am waiting for a different game, and in doing so I'm saving myself money. Why do people choose different car insurance? Why do people buy this car over that car? Its all the same.

I'm not about to play a game knowing full well that I'll be switching to another in a few months. I'd rather spend my time elsewhere. That doesn't mean that I personally hate Rift, but it also doesn't mean that I have to play it either. I don't "follow" the crowd, there's games out there that appeal to everyone's tastes, and we all so happen to have different tastes. Just stop generalizing and play the game you want to play, it doesn't matter what everyone else thinks of a game. Your opinion should be your decision. Don't worry about everyone else's decision.

Now, why can't people chose for themselves what is fun and what isin't? This is exactly why everyone has to try the game, and why they are making the beta so easy to reach for everybody.

People don't need you to tell them what game they should play. If someone told you to go back and give WoW (for example) a second chance or third or fourth, would you? Even if you are currently playing Rift? We all have our own choice. That's something you just have to accept.

I was writing something in another thread and it suddenly hit my that I dont understand something about the general MMO gamer.

Now Im going to use World of Warcraft here as its generaly known, but most MMOS function like this.. exept a select few but im coming to that later... so here is my Question...

WHY DO SO MANY OF YOU KEEP PLAYING AFTER AN EXPANSION TO A GAME COMES OUT, MAKING ALL YOUR HARD WORK UP TO THAT POINT MEANINGLESS?

Cause MMO's don't go on your resume. There's no 'work' involved. It's all in good fun. It seems like you're struck with virtual materialism. Being materialistic, be it virtual or real, is unbecoming my friend.

yes you are Right about one thing I see MMOs more as a virtual world. And I have to say that there actually is alot of WORK involved in for example EvE... Its not a joke that the game is more like a jobb then a game... But I like the challenge it brings and I studied economics so for me its a very fun passtime. I also like to blow other peoples shit up and make their day missreable... getting that long awaited Hate mail.. is something I look forward to after a good SCAM hits home or I suicide gank someone in highsec just to steal those 5 Plexes he was bringing to market. If Entropida Universe wasent such a fucked up game I would probably play it. Im hoping more games become Like it though so at some point some of us can just play GAMES to pay our BILLS... I dont think of games as fun pass time.. I think of it as a Virtual world were I Co exist with other people. And not being able to effect them or do anything meaningfull, takes away the hole reason for playing. I would not play Poker either if I dident stand a chans of winning something in the end..

Ps: those 5 plexes I looted gave me 5 months of game time... that saved me 14.99 $ per month for 5 months.. not a bad days work..

Umm...you do realize that people sell WoW gold for real money too right...Which equals to free game time as well....

So Blizzard lets you sell thier gold now do they? last I heard if you sold gold you got Banned? have they changed this? I think not...

taking those Plex ( player extended licences ingame) was perfectly legal and Sanctioned by CCP I cant get banned for it...

To make things clear a PLEX is a Player extended Licence with it I get one month of free Game time... So looting that wreck I got 5 months of game time.. You can buy Plexes from CCPs homepage, when you log into your account.. they cost as a much as 1 month sub per plex. Players with less time sell them to players like me for ISK (money in EVE) and I can play for free and they can have fun playing the game with there limited game time... Its a win win situation.. But you can also move them around and sell them at a higher price... This player was out moving his Plex around not jet chashed in.. I shoot him down and that was 5 months of free game time for me THANK you VERY much!!!

My friend does it all the time and is still doing it, he hasnt gotten caught. They may have shut down bot farmers, but doesnt mean they'll catch everyone.

I love how people say phasing started here and there (usually WoW).

Phasing started LONG LONG before that, just no one took advantage of it outside of particular instances.

The original use of phasing was with stealth.  When a player goes into stealth you tell all the other clients that you no long load them unless they are on your team.  This has been going on since the original EQ.  Then finaly someone said, hey wait a second we can use this for things other than stealth... like content!

Wala, it is now being used for content.

This is incredibly accurate and true - only difference is WOW devs do not know how to do it on the fly so they force you into your own instance to deal with thier incompetent developement that cant simply do what EQ devs figured out a long long time ago in a galaxy far away... Help me Bioware your my only hope!

+1

At least some people understand.

"Perfect World Entertainment's games are designed to be truly free-to-play and when compared to subscription-based games, offers players the best entertainment value available on the market today."

.....IDK about that......

Any grats to the dude who did it.

Phasing...heh...yeah

So they make "Phasing" in WoW. Which copies what has been done before and JUST SO HAPPENS to coincide with rifts.....but this isn't trolled or flamed...cause it's WOW doin it

mark me not surprised....

Are you implying that Blizzard copied Rifts in that area?

If you're not... then nevermind :).

If so, you're sorely misinformed, and allow me to correct you.

1. Phasing was introduced in WoW's last expansion, WoTLK which came out a little over 2 years ago. They've expanded/improved on it in Cata.

2. Blizzard didn't just decide "Hey, there's this game called Rifts in development that is supposed to have some dynamic events.. We need to copy them quick!" and then design, develop, implement, test and release Phasing into WoW in a couple weeks.  Hell.. was Rifts even announced when Lich King came out?

Ummm....even before that, try looking into Kithicor Forest in EQ 1. The Dark elves invaded with a bunch of undeads I think the leader was Lanys Tvyl or whatever. Now during the night undeads wander around the forest. Then check out Firiona Vie, another big invasion, the good side lost and ran into the forest to make a new outpost. Since then the evil races now occupy the encampment. So if you guys are really going to be calling companies copycats, you just have to look at a much more wider range of games other than WoW and the new upcoming ones. These were FYI live events set up by the GMs, not by some junk quest starting forced event.

Edit: I forgot to add, Phasing is not a new feature. Its been so long that any game out there hasnt done it in a while, and somehow WoW implements it in their expansion and people are calling it a new feature? Maybe some of you guys haven't played EQ1 in its early days, but still its nothing new.

What do those events have to do with phasing.  Those were live events, not phasing, they weren't quest lines that changed the world for the person on the quest based on their point in the quest in a way that people not at that particular point couldn't see.  Everyone saw those events.  In Phasing the zone changes for you because of your action but remains the same for people who have not done those actions.  Those events in EQ were nothing like phasing at all.

What other game had Phasing before WoW.  I'd never heard of it before lich king, that doesn't mean it didn't exist but just tell us which game had and where was it used.

I did play EQ in the early days and it did not have phasing.  It had events, live and scripted but not phasing.

Venge Sunsoar

edit:  actually the more I think about it, phasing seems pretty similar to music, where as the song moves along, new ellements are created and introduced.  Just an interesting sidebit.

edit - personally I think phasing is great.  It marriest the great stories of spg with the randomness and interaction of MMO's.  The bad part of most MMO's is that you can't have an effect on the world without it affecting someone else, and that effect is not alwasy good.  This way you can affect your world.

So just because its not quest oriented makes it not phasing? And by quest oriented EVERYONE changes the world repeating the same cycle...How in the heck does that even makes sense. Its a PERMANENT change. So in reality only 1 person or group should be allowed to make that change and no one else. Everyone picking up the quest and doing it over and over again just doesnt make any sense. Which is why EQ made it all the more better because once its changed drastically, you just cant go back and replay the quest and do it all over again. Whats the point in that?

So how come MMORPG.com doesnt have it listed up as one of the "recently added" games...or why haven't they added it on to one of their game list at all?

I like all the old school Ultima Online music, every city you go to has their own theme music, It was classic nice melodies. And sometimes while you're venturing out in the wilderness the music just starts playing. Now days you'll barely hear them play in the current state that its in. Oh how I miss those days. They should have kept it the way it was. Being 13 at the time, it made the game very interesting. I used to just sit next to my brother and watch while he was playing, and it made me feel as though I was a part of the game, haha. Britain city music was the best (just because I hang out there a lot) every time I listened to the music, it always brought out the evil side of me, I would usually log in my thief and steal from unsuspecting people. Sometimes I would scope around the many taverns in the area and hide in the rooms, waiting for people to run in and try to do a quick drop/trade off items so they can switch to their toons and pick up their stuff, but little did they realize I was about to rob them of their possessions and go back into hide mode.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qHRhq8bc-58&NR=1 This one was very good, I liked it so much better back when the screen was loading up a treasure chest to log in. It made me feel like there's some fun to be had!

Im leaning towards the Warrior with dual swords or the berserker. The warrior seems to have some nice fast attacks, while the berserker seems to be really slow but if the attacks hits it looks like it would hurt pretty bad. But im pretty sure I'll try out all classes first then really decide which class I wanna focus on.

To clarify, the combat system hasn't changed.

What this refers to is specific skills. For example, the archer has a multi-arrow skill, where you fire the skill at a mob and it "tags" it, you do this for multiple mobs and then the skill fires off hitting all the tagged mobs. But that is the only archer skill that uses tagging.

What they've done is expand this type of tagging to work for some healing abilities and a few other skills. You still have to aim, it just makes healing easier than it was previously. Most skills still fire off and head towards where you were aiming and can miss if you are bad at aiming, just like before.

EDIT: It is NOT tab-targetting / auto-aiming like WoW.

^THIS.

Everyone else on the same page now? ;)

Amazing how they all totally ignored my post :)

I wonder how many times people have to requote this for them to understand?

Ultima Online / Everquest switched back and forth. And also juggling 2 relationships at the time haha.

Aions crafting is the closest to VG's as you will find and some of the best gear in game is craftable no free trial though and its a massive moneysink.

Unless it's changed much since I played, Aion's crafting was extremelly slow and boring. I would sit in a crafting building for hours just waiting for it to go up by like maybe 100 points or so, and you just run back and forth between a merchant to buy ingrediants then click a button and sit and wait for a bunch of said gear to get done.

Yeah, Aion's crafting is BORING. Its not engaging like Vanguards. Doing Aion's crafting I buy all the materials needed for example making life potions. Buy x300 go AFK for like 30 minutes come back move mouse around so I dont get kick out of the game. Go AFK again. Then once you dont gain anymore skill points just change to the next higher recipe to make. Repeat the process. You can basically have max skills in about 1 or 2 days doing this. Other than the fact that you have to buy or craft your own expert/master item to get to the next level. If you're rich its no problem. Just a waste of time.

Csthao, you realize you can turn that option on/off... you can play old style bags or new.

Didn't realize that, I haven't touched the game in such a long time now.

2D for Ultima Online is just so much better. You're not limited when it comes to how much stuff you can stuff into 1 bag. But the 3D version you got squares showing how much you can put in. IMO its just all about your imagination, I see nothing wrong with 2D UO, yet I cant stand the 3D version either. Trust me, people want a real real 3D version of UO, but its just not possible. You would never be able to customize your house in 3D, like the way the 2D version does it.

And lets be honest, most people are just gonna play it as a stop gap before GW2 comes out.

And once GW2 fails to meets the unrealistic expectations people have for it, they'll be back.

However as I have never managed to create my own legacy of games who am I to judge him! I suspect you yourself though must have a porfolio of successful games that have worldwide acclaim.

Ultima and UO never had worldwide acclaim, it's was a strictly NA thing. Ultima series were pretty bad games too  compared to what was coming out of Japan. The US just never got exposed to those games so they thought Ultime was "da bomb", they were very mediocre RPG.

They were excelent game at the time ; and are still better than most of the trash being churned out (Graphics aside). You are just showing your ignorance.

I know a good game your tastes must be different.

So you think UO was only focused in NA?...Obviously you havent met many of the japanese players or the European players. I remember a few times how racist people were. Just because there were some Japanese players running around people hunted them like they were Jews in WW2. Camped their corpse wandered around NPC healers just in case they respawned. And people weren't even conned RED pks. They turned themselves red just to kill em for fun. UO was a bigger game than you've know it to be.

You know I had something similar happen. I was using 2 sli 260 gtx, then all of a sudden, there was a horrible smell, like plastic burning. I opened the side of my tower checked everything, reboot and noticed one of my cards was dead. Tried to turn on SLI again and it worked...Then a few months later it happened again, the same plastic burning smell. My screen turned black and rebooted. But when I turned it back on, everything was working again. Both cards were fine. To this day I still dont know what happened, but am 100% both times it came from my vid cards.
