"PotBS should have been replaced with Uncharted Waters Online. Much larger world, player base and more content set in the same theme."
Not if you want to play a game that doesn't contain anime-looking avatars or doesn't have a jrpg feel. |

WoT is not a MMO. That's correct. I'm in the beta.
Guild Wars is also not a MMO. Why is it still listed here? How many people at a time can you play with in Guild Wars? And the cities don't count; they're just glorified chat and server browser rooms like Diablo's. Massive refers to how many people at a time you can play with, not how many people total play the game. If it were the latter then online chess and online poker would qualify as MMOs. If you're going to get rid of WoT, get rid of the other games that don't qualify. Not doing that makes you look bad and/or biased and/or paid to promote certain games only. EDIT: In Guild Wars the entire game is instanced, or was last time I played. In games like EQ2 or WoW instancing is only part of the game, and you have the potential to see literally hundreds of players at one time in the same place in most of the world. Whether you ever do or not is irrelevant. In Guild Wars the only place you can see lots of players is in the cities, and the cities aren't really part of the game, they're just places to set up parties to go play instances. It's much like playing Diablo, browsing the server list and joining a game only it's done ingame. |

Gonna agree with Draf there, although I'm not a developer. The game is a ton of fun with 1.5 |

Atlantica Online: New Servers On The Way
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/10/08 7:23:07 PM
Originally posted by Ozmodan Sorry to break it to you, the game has had it's own forum for quite some time. Try clicking on the forum tab sometime. Just because it is not listed in the right hand column does not mean no forum exists for it. As to new servers, it is just a temporary thing. I still don't see what people see in this game, the combat is lame, reminds me of many 90's games. The client is not written well it has close to Conan like computer requirements. I suppose this is a good game for strategy fans, they like the chessified combat.
The fact that it's like many 90s games is why I like it so much. I totally love turn-based, party-based games. The rest of the game plays like your typical 3rd person MMO, but combat is where it shines. You don't get that kind of strategic and tactical gameplay from any other MMO. Combat is the greatest part of this game and you say it's lame :) I say combat in games like EQ or WoW is lame. You sit there and watch your character automate combat, while you occasionally tell him to perform an action or cast a spell. It's boring compared to AO. Chessified combat ftw! And I can run this game fine on my 6 year old computer, whereas I have no chance of running Conan. I struggle in Rome when it's arena time but that's to be expected.
Oh, and when I click Forum here, I go to the page that lists that left-hand column (what do you mean by right-hand column?) and the Pub and other forums. I see no Atlantica forum here. |

Atlantica Online: New Servers On The Way
News Discussion « General Discussion 11/08/08 1:00:31 AM
This is definitely my favorite MMO so far, and deserves it's own forum here at least. This game is so much fun and will become so popular that 1 new server won't be enough. The only thing that might put people off is the turn-based, party-based combat system. I personally love it since I grew up with those sorts of games. There's actual strategy and thinking required in combat, and I haven't had that in a MMO ever, not in this capacity. You do yourself a disservice if you don't try this game. |
|
|
I agree. I'm so hooked on Atlantica it's ridiculous. It's a MMO that actually requires strategy and thought in combat. Plus betting on the arena battles is awesome. Sad that not many people know about this game. It's easily the best MMO I've played so far. There's so much to do it seems I'll never ever get bored of it. |

What killed the game for me wasn't the controls, or the hardcore pvp. It was the fact that everyone had multiple characters and multi-boxing was common. Maybe I'm a bit too into roleplay, but hearing in guild chat that someone was gonna log on their other character, and someone else was gonna control two or more at the same time, ruined the immersion for me. To me it turned the game into a simple game and NOT a whole new world for me to lose myself in. But that's me. |

Star Sonata is right in some ways. But very wrong in other ways.
General Discussion « Star Sonata 12/07/07 7:43:30 PM
I just came back to this game after 2 1/2 years, and I have to say it's vastly improved. Especially the community. I want to clear up a few misconceptions. Those "bots" you see aren't your typical MMOG bot; they're "slaves" which are a direct ingame feature. I don't want anyone thinking people use automated 3rd party bots or anything. You see so many of them because higher level players can control many at a time. They have names like "TS198Giggidy" and "CS987Goo" Combat mechanics are fine. I don't have that "hit but miss" problem? You sure you're actually targeting what you're trying to hit? If you don't target it your shots will go straight through. That doesn't mean "aim at it". No reverse thrusters bugged me too after Cosmic Rift, but I got used to it. Infantry's Fleet zone doesn't have reverse thrusters either if I remember correctly. Lack of PvP is just because people aren't really doing it right now. Back when I played last time PvP was rampant, and you couldn't leave your slaves alone for a moment without some hotshot coming along killing them all. Oh, and f2p (free to play) players cannot PvP, or at least have a lot of restrictions. As for subscriptions and players being discouraged, it's only the f2p players that get discouraged. This is a game where you can do a lot up to level 20, but you really have to pay to experience it all. No f2p player has the right to complain about not being able to play past level 20 :) If you want to play a free game that let's you "do it all" then Star Sonata isn't for you. As a beta tester and former p2p, I can tell you this game has improved vastly. There's a steep learning curve (the basics are easy to learn though) but it's really quite a deep game. |

What would make you come back to EverQuest
Hogcaller Inn (General) « Everquest 11/13/07 2:53:38 PM
Classic server up to Velious only, perhaps with maybe a few of the new zones added to the old world if they fit and aren't unbalancing (I know nothing about them). Including Paineel and associated zones is an absolute must. EQ rocked up till Luclin where it just seemed to lose focus and direction. Classic, Kunark and Velious are the glory days of EQ at it's finest. Nothing but a classic server up to Velious could make me come back. And I would. |

Classic Server to Kunark, Velious, Luclin, or PoP? (Poll)
Hogcaller Inn (General) « Everquest 11/08/07 12:19:27 PM
I vote for classic/kunark/velious only, and no progression. No Luclin or beyond. Have the server start with both expansions available. I don't see why progression is necessary anyway; from what I remember neither expansion affects classic, and it would benefit the players by spreading out groups to help ease the congestion the classic zones would inevitably have. Iksar would also be available immediately. I'm really missing Everquest lately. I left some time after Luclin was released since I didn't like the direction the game was heading. I didn't even like the new character models (well some of them at least, especially the new trolls). I didn't like the "easy mode" book portals that completely destroyed the need for boat rides or ports. I didn't like how they gave the troll town to frogloks. I didn't like how the EC tunnel was no longer used for trading. The original game I loved was being ruined in my opinion. Classic/kunark/velious only might very well bring me back to this game. Having both expansions available right away would just be a bonus. I never had as much fun in a MMORPG than I did in the early days of Everquest. So, does this poll tell us there's a chance we may be seeing a classic server? WIthout Luclin or beyond? |

Infantry, Cosmic Rift, and Tanarus are Now Completely Free!
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 7/16/07 2:54:51 AM
Very cool! I used to play these games pre-p2p (and I even used to subscribe to Tanarus for $10 a month back when it was packaged with Everquest). They're totally addictive, and how can you beat 100% FREE? |

Hmm good question. I have a joystick, throttle and rudder pedals but I don't use them for Darkspace. It only takes place on a 2D plane in 3rd person view which at first may sound limiting but believe me is absolutely necessary! And it works wonderfully. You don't even realize it's all on 1 plane when playing. You can maneuver your ship just fine with the keyboard. Between maneuvering your ship and knowing when to fire certain weapons you have all the control you need. I've often wondered what Darkspace would be like with 3D space and controls like the Xwing series or Freespace. And it made me realize that the game would be way too complicated. You'd have to play the game to know what I mean. |

So you've been banned before? You're already a troublemaker? You will get a permanent ban. People do get warned first, usually a friendly warning that something's against the rules. But you might not warrant a warning since you've already threatened. There's nothing wrong with Kluth cloak. It's their special device. ICC get pulse shields, UGTO get flux waves and Kluth get cloak. I personally think Kluth are underpowered this version, so I have no idea where you're coming from. In case you missed it in Drafell's post, you will be dealt with severely for sabotaging. Darkspace is a great community and it's staff listen attentively to the players. But you haven't bothered talking about issues you have with the game. No, instead you choose to sabotage to make your point. You will be dealt with severely. Now, if you instead choose to voice your concerns in a civil way, you might be pleasantly surprised by the response. I recommend you try that instead :) We are friendly people but we don't take kindly to those who try to ruin the game. |

Awesome awesome movies! Maybe this will show people that Darkspace is not like EVE at all, but is in fact so much more exciting :)

A game that really needs to either get more support or be let die gracefully
General Discussion « DarkSpace 3/20/07 7:11:00 PM
Weird. I think DS's community is still the best online game community ever. People have fun and the lobby conversation does get crazy at times and hard to follow, but in general everyone is friends. |

It shouldn't be a contestant against EVE. Well yeah every mmo is a contestant against every other mmo, but EVE and Darkspace are too different to be in direct competition with each other for the same players and playerbase. EVE players may not like Darkspace's gameplay, and I know many Darkspace players don't like EVE's gameplay at all. The problem is people don't really know what Darkspace is all about. They don't know how it plays. All they see is another space mmo. Darkspace differs from EVE the way Shadowbane differs from Everquest (if you know those two games then you know what I'm talking about). Darkspace is a 3rd person PvP chess match on a galactic scale. In version 484 due for beta testing soon there will be more AI in the metaverse and thus more to do than the pure PvP we have now, but it will still be primarily a PvP game. I just don't like people comparing this game to EVE. It's not a proper comparison. You can't compare Shadowbane to Everquest since the two games have a different focus, play completely different and appeal to different types of players. Both are a pseudo-medieval high fantasty setting but that's where the similarities end. And you can't compare Darkspace to EVE for the same reason. |

I don't really consider EVE better. I don't like the skill system and how you have no control over how fast you can train, the fact you can get podded, the lack of control over your ship etc. Darkspace is a totally different game. You can't compare it to EVE other than the fact that it takes place in space. And I don't know what perspective EVE is played in but Darkspace is like a 3rd person FPS. EVE seems to be like a RPG in space while Darkspace is more like a FPS in space. All depends on what game type you prefer. I've been playing Darkspace on and off for 6 years now, and I still come back to it. You can just jump in and play (like a sandbox game) without having to do any tedious stuff like mining or running missions. In Darkspace you don't have skills, you have ranks and badges. The more you play, the faster you progress. You have direct control over your ship. There's no such thing as "podding"; if your ship is destroyed you lose some prestige but you just get another ship and earn it back (it's really no big deal). There's no "ganking" since there's no PvE element to the game...you don't have to mine for credits, do missions, hunt pirates etc. Its all PvP. Your "mission" is to conquer the entire metaverse, one planet at a time, and destroy your enemies' ships in the process. To me EVE sounds like an advanced version of Star Sonata. I'm not saying it's a bad game, but EVE and DS are completely different games. I've been thinking about trying EVE out, but when I read the manuals and player guides it just sounds like a tedious time-sink where you can't accomplish much without being part of a strong team and where there's a constant threat of being ganked. In DS you need a team too (you're forced to team up just by choosing one of the factions), but there's no time sinks other than the learning curve and no threat of being ganked. You don't have to search for rare items in DS; it's all available ingame by building at factories or salvaging wreckage from destroyed ships. Darkspace will appeal to players who crave a PvP experience where they pilot their ships directly. It will appeal to players who desire a "chess match in space" as each faction constantly struggles to capture, build and defend planets. It will appeal to players who don't want time sinks and don't want to bother with PvE elements or players who are super powerful just because they found the "mega rare laser of planetary doom". DS is team-based PvP, and only PvP with a FPS-type perspective. Not everyone can handle it. EDIT: People have to stop comparing this game to EVE. The two games aren't even remotely similar. I might wind up playing both actually. Darkspace will satisfy my craving for pure PvP space fun, and EVE might satisfy my craving for a space RPG. |

Hmm well I just resubscribed after an extended absence. The game really is a lot of fun. It's biggest problem is the fact that so few people know about it and try it out. They see games like EVE and automatically think that because it has so many players it must be great. That said, if you're not into PvP and being in direct control of your ship you won't like Darkspace. Unlike EVE you pilot and control it manually. But once you get the hang of it you become addicted. I've been playing on and off for almost 6 years now. It's the only multiplayer game I keep coming back to. That should say something about it's quality. No other multiplayer game has kept my interest for so long. |

Whatever happened to Wyvern at cabochon.com?
The Pub at MMORPG.COM « General Discussion 2/20/07 7:56:35 PM
It's still gone :) Anyone have any info whatsoever on this? I'm not saying I think it was a fantastic game (it was a helluva lot of fun but the rules and the terrible admins ruined it for me), but it's one of those addictive yet simple games. If you want to know the problem I had with the admins, I was the storm giant who got banned for accidentally summoning a shoggoth in the church from a scroll, then logging off. I found out the thing went instantly hostile and killed any new player that spawned at or entered the church. After I explained how it was an accident and due to lag (I used the scroll in one of those random dungeons as a desperate last resort after descending the stairs and finding myself surrounded by some tough monsters, but due to lag it didn't take effect until after I was dead and in the church), I was told by Arilou that I was a liar and that it was definitely done on purpose and that he didn't believe my "story" one bit. I would never do something like that on purpose, I'm not a griefer. Even though I played after this incident with another character, it always haunted me. It's the first and only time I've ever been banned in an online game, and the first time I was ever accused of being a liar when explaining a game occurance. I wanted to play this game again :( Bad admins or no. Untrusting admins or no. Power hungry admins or no. The game was fun and I actually had some ideas for some new areas to create, like I created for my old text MUD. |
