CoX :  City of Heroes/City of Villains.

#6 was combat.  Collision detection plus a true 3d world makes for an incredible combat experience.  Tankers can actually do they're job and protect squishies.  You can take advantage of height and flight!  Air combat is fun and adds a regular element (the z axis!)  that any game not set in space or underwater ever could.

Do the CoX trial at the very least.  I can't speak to EQ2 or FFXI but having played a few other games, I find City Of ____ to be a satisifying gaming experience for a few different reasons.

1.) It's not about loot which is typically the driver of most games, particularly WoW and its battlegrounds.  In CoX you get enhancements that drop from higher level mobs and can "slot" them for bonuses to your powers and there are a few high level "monsters" like the Hamidon (you'll hear the phrase "Hami run" probably) that drop slightly better ones but all in all, there is no equivalent uber loot.  The fact that you don't have loot as an objective means you ultimately play the game just to play the game.  The combination of powers and the ability to slot so many different enhancements means min/maxing just doesn't necessarily work.

2.) As an earlier poster mentioned, you have 5 archtypes to choose from.  Each is soloable, particularly since you can visit an npc that will tune difficulty/xp reward as you wish but this is the first and possibly ONLY game where the WHOLE party is greater than the sum of the parts.  Seriously, Cryptic managed to build very compatible classes that are fun to play and play with.  Due to the scaling of missions based on number of players, every class (controllers, blaster, tankers, defenders and scrappers) has its role but the composition can be tinkered enough that there is no necessary group formula.

3.) Speaking of mission scaling, Cryptic nailed the superhero experience.  Sure, our heros typically fight the one super baddie but often your fighting piles of foes.  Usually your hero can fight about 2-3 even conned bad guys and the numbers just grow with the level of your character and the size of your party resulting in massive, epic-feeling battles.

4.)  Customization and Immersion is a huge part of the game.  You can spend hours with the costume generator before beginning the game, plus you get additional slots at levels 20, 30, 40 and 50.  Aside from general grouping, guilds are formed a super groups with their own motto and costume as well.  When you switch into supergroup mode, addition "prestige" earned for conquests goes to the team rather than your personal pool.

5.)  The community is pretty much the best I've seen since starting on Dark Age of Camelot so many years ago.  Sure, like every other game you may have to turn off the broadcast channel but finding parties is extremely easy to do.  It may just be the genre of the game which lends itself to cooperation.

About the only things working against CoX is it is an older game now (almost..3 years old come this march I think) and content has been coming out slower (some will argue there wasn't enough to begin with.)  I think for the power gamers who are there to get the maximum level, they miss a good chunk of the game.  That isn't to say that mission maps get repetitive, they do at times but for casual gaming, CoX can keep you going for a long time.

If you enjoyed the single player "Freedom Force" games in particular, you will enjoy this one.

Edited for typos (wow, there were alot!)

I can see you guys going back using the free trials to see how life is there but why the heck are you PAYING them?!?  Sony could care less how much you complain so long as you fill their coffers. The fact that you pay for your dissatisfaction is mind-boggling and does nothing to change situation.

VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET!

I'm curious to see how this release will go.  With the lack of franchise on either screen (perhaps the books are still selling strong), either Trekkies will be starved for this game (which can lead to high expectations and a huge letdown like SWG) or it will experience an out of sight/out of mind syndrome.  I'm skeptical about the latter, but you never know.  The Trek franchise has been waning for some time althought the cancellation of Enterprise seemed premature.

Eh, I bought a refurbed dual-core from Dell for less than an xbox 360...  PC gaming isn't THAT expensive...

I dont think that you can play this game with your new pc on high graphics... Ace of Conan will be released in Direct10 and there are
no Graphic cards which can handle this ;). So if you want to have a good graphic youd better buy a Xbox360, its cheaper and you have a phantastic graphic!

Perhaps, but you're also assuming that the 360 will be able to handle conan's high end directx 10 graphics without a problem.  Remember, the xbox 360 was released in November 2005 meaning that you're expecting 2 year old equipment to run it as well as cutting edge.  In a nod to the xbox though, the gpu has 48 shader units and runs at 500 mhz although apparently it only "can do 4x FSAA, z-buffering, and alpha blending with no appreciable performance penalty on the GPU." (per http://techreport.com/etc/2005q2/xbox360-gpu/index.x?pg=2)

So we'll see ( ' :

Maybe I'm missing something.  It would be really nice if in the "Sections" box with 'Mail', 'Recent' and 'Active', there could be 'Replies' and it just puts together a list of every topic someone has replied to since you posted on it.  Limit it to the 200 most recent topics or something otherwise it's very tricky to watch threads even with alerts sent to personal email.

This needs to be resized better otherwise people with length profiles (e.g. lists like my profile) can get cut off.  Also, the close button probably isn't necessary.  I think mmorpg'ers can click the "x" ( ' :

At the moment the industry is stale and money oriented, run by dicks who have very little idea about how to make a good game.

Maybe in the future things will change. I hope we will see another Golden Age oneday.

Until then, Peace.

QFT

Had the same argument on boring games with a friend at work the other day. There are two things you can do about it, either fight it or go with the flow. If you find how to fight it let me know
Would that be trying the new technologies? Like Wii?

You fight it by voting with your wallet.  You reward the developers of games like Planescape: Torment and you punish developers like Sony for trainwrecks such as Star Wars Galaxies by cancelling immediately.  Please note the intentional irony of my choices.

Well these days I game with my 8 year old son, introducing him to games and playing them with him gets me a 'passive' or 'secondary' high, I get to see old games through new eyes which is nearly as good.

Currently I can be found on the Euro CoX servers playing Green Power Ranger to his Red, lots of fun :D

Pick a game you can still stomach and try to bring in friends/family who havnt played, even the most dull and overplayed game can be fun again with RL buddies.

That's just awesome ( ' :

I've heard that the book sucks too.

Bashing popular books is like cool, that's why people say they sucks, read them and they are pretty good, of course they are not close to the Chronicles of Pern serie (if you like dragons but dislike magic lol) that has a lot more depth to it, but well Anne McCaffrey got a lot more experience writting ;) (Cant go wrong with the first female writer to win a nebula award in 1968 for "Dragonrider" one of the chronicles of pern)

C'mon now.  Eragon and Eldest were entertaining books but they are far from great literature as you seem to agree.  They're TOTALLY cliche'd and predictable yet that hasn't stopped so many of us from rewarding Chris Paolini's efforts with out hard-earned dollars (I borrowed Eragon but bought Eldest, the final will be library check-out!)

Well.... LotR and Harry Potter did good... why can't Eragon do good aswell...

I thought only Video games gave bad movies

I agree on LotR series however I think Prisoner of Azkaban could have been better.

Goblet of Fire was a downright awful adaptation of the book and, generally speaking, was really poorly directed and edited which is a shame since it was one of the better books if not the best.

no chance of it flopping it will sell tons and do very well, just not sure about the staying power of it a half year or so down the road

Well, I think everyone here needs to consider what flopping means.  They can push a lot of units but that doesn't necessarily make it a success, especially in the world of mmorpgs where they need something like 18 months of subscriptions (hearsay number, I don't know) to be successful.

I think the LOTR title will sell it initially.  I can't comment on how well it will due because, hey, gotta play it first.  What I do think is that they missed the boat for the franchise.  The movies will be 3 years old and another quality franchise movie (either the Hobbit or a lame "prequel" based on disjointed tales from the Silimarillion) won't be ready in time for a tie-in.

Because a piece of string is breaking that means the entire Wii is a flop. Yeah, right.

Actually, my buddy looked up the system specs of the Wii. That's what I think is going to make it crash. They are..... incredibly sub-standard.

Sub-standard actually is what essentially is the standard for today.

Blu-ray support?  Are families across america ready to toss out their DVDs?  No.

1080p HD support?  Do you think that many HDTVs have sold?  Do you think people really are going to spend 2000 dollars to upgrade their tv for a game system?

Why should Nintendo incorprate bells and whistles and ask a majority of its targeted user base to pay for said bells and whistles that won't be used by the majority of them? Blu-ray and 1080p is for the early-adopter/fad following fan boi who can afford those toys. Even if they are wealthy, it's a small segment. The wii fits this market (which effectively is every family with a TV) for the next 3 years. By then, newer video technology should have saturated the market and it would make sense to upgrade and the costs of implementing those bells and whistles will have dropped.

Dark Age of Camelot.
For minimal investment, get Unreal Tournamnent: Game of the Year Edition. Like W:ET, it's an older game but it's a significantly active game server-wise with tons more mods than W:ET.

I'm surprised no one has said WoW.  If Diablo was ever made into an MMOG it would be a near replica of WoW.

Tons of useless items.
The only items worth using are from doing mephisto/Bhaal runs all day... I mean MC/BWL runs all day.
Socketed Items
Quick leveling
Pointless PvP

Go play Diablo 2 on hardcore mode and come tell me that PVP there is pointless. If Diablo is ever made into an MMO, I'll be the first to play it, so long as they retain the necromancer class as being able to summon a hoarde of skeletons

I was always fond of corpse explosion, particularly in the bug lair ( ' :<
Quickest way is to log into the router and set the ip of your computer to the "DMZ", then try playing.  If it works, then you should investigate a bit further into "Port Forwarding".  Check the website of the game and see if they recommend specific ports be forwarded to the machine that will be playing.  You then make the necessary changes on the router.
