What about you?

I played SWG(on starsider mostly) right after the NGE hit. on and off for years. missed pre-cu, and didn't even know about mmo's before then. sad to see it die. I've played EVE. I tried TOR. grinded an imperial agent high enough to get the most beautiful ship in TOR, the phantom. turns out, it's only beautiful while docked. the space game in TOR is so fucked up, the phantom looks like a purple pancake when you actually fly it, and the space mini-game itself isn't even starfox; it's starfox's asshole. my Z-95 starter ship in SWG was better. I tried entropia. good game, if you like a virtual casino, and you enjoy spending lots of money, because that shit ISN'T FREE. their space game doesn't truly exist yet. kinda bare bones. some ships, even caps, but the whole thing lacks, big-time. they say a space expansion is coming; we'll see ^^ I don't know where to go from here, but I'm sticking to what I said on this forum last year:

If I see one more fucking elf, I'll go on a jihad.

I mean it.

So it's tough all over man. allot of good people at these companys may not have jobs this xmas so i can feel bad for them.

Rift is a solid game BTW. i wish it had devs that could actually see what MMO gamers want and add it. there is so much to list, but housing comes to mind and some sandbox that could help roleplayers.

Still a good solid game.

Uh, yes, I'm aware it's a tough economy, I'm living in it too, which is why this pisses me off so much. they've no right to trick players into spending more money than they intended. why would you try to defend that kind of asshole behavior?

That promotion is very deceptive.

I got that e-mail; you can get the game for free, but pay the monthly fee right off, no 30 days free game time. on the link in that e-mail, you're taken to a page that clearly states that the $0 offer requires you to pay the monthly fee first..the deceptive part is the collector's edition for $10. it also requires you to pay the monthly fee right off, no free game time..BUT IT ONLY TELLS YOU THAT AFTER YOU'VE BOUGHT THE GAME. Further, once you've bought the game, you're told that the monthly fee will be charged upon first log-in. this may be important, considering the patch for this game is 9+gigs, you may not be playing for a bit considering your internet connection/rig. but, I was charged immediately for both the game, and the monthly fee, 2 separate charges, totally $24.99. So, if you play, know it's not free at all. That's intentional deception, and it pisses me off to the point that I'm not going to play. they got this cash, but, had they just been honest, I could've played this game for months. they could have gotten more. I won't reward deception, even if it appears that I'm cutting off my nose to spite my face. oh well..back to EVE..

guys, the magic the gathering thing was a bit of hyperbole. I'm not actually gonna play it. :) (although, I hear it's decent). some of the more harsh responses aside, thanks for all the responses. I see a lot of people feel as I do; todays developers and investors seem to only want to cater to the lowest common denominator, and I think that's very sad. in any case, I, also, have hope for TOR. I hope the devs see their mistake with the space game and give us JTL reloaded. we will see.

I started a similar thread last week..and, OP, I don't agree. I'm about to turn 42, been an mmo gamer since 2005, and the only games I've played in that time that were worth a good goddamn were EVE and neocron 2. everything else, and I'm talking exclusively MMO's here,(even though I found some mild enjoyment in some) was the same old crap, dressed up differently. There is no real difference between AOC, RIFT, LOTRO, DDO, and so on. same basic classes, some multi-classing, but the core is the same. the missions are the same. THE WORLDS are essentially the same. the lore is poorly defined, and shallow. I never got to play SWG before the NGE because I knew nothing of MMO's then. I wish I had; sounds like it was wonderful, even with all the bugs I've read about. nope, it's the games that are the issue, mainly the devs being put into a situation with investors, that doesn't allow them to develop the way they want. the moneymen want their money back, and to make more. they want the lowest common denominator because "good" doesn't sell as many units as "mediocre but good enough". Mcdonald's philosophy. sad but true.

hey all, just wanted to thank everyone for their input..I'm glad this sparked such a good conversation. I peeked my head into everquest 2 extended just for a hot second. made a lowbie brigand on the "bad" side and did enjoy how the world looked and so on. one small thing I got a kick out of, there were there little mini-tornadoes randomly, and, if one hit you, it threw you a fair distance. not sure why I got a kick out of that, but I did.  also looked at world of tanks but that's not really my thing; maybe world of planes when it comes out will hold my interest as I'm a student pilot anyway. I've decided not to completely give up hope, but, I'm also not plunking down another dime unless something really knocks my socks off. thanks again for the conversation.

Well, I've about had it. I've played all kinds of MMORPG's, EVE, EQ2, vanguard, ryzom, AOC, anarchy online, global agenda, beyond protocol, black prophecy, neocron 2(the best of them all, by a wide margin) SWG, matrix online, and many more.

nothing holds my interest. I've spent a lot of time, money and so on. it feels like I'm playing the same game over and over, with a different skin. EVE is a standout; but CCP lost my trust. once you're down to arguing about monocles, I pick up a book, ya know?

I'm the problem; my mind needs to be engaged(EVE did that but it's going down), I like sci-fi, I like flying things, I like virtual open worlds, I like persistence, I like player housing, but(and I can't stress this enough) IF I SEE ONE MORE FUCKING ELF IN MY LIFE I WILL GO ON A  JIHAD. I can't take it anymore. plus MMO's seem to all be going P2W, not just P2P. guess its time to hang it up. hell even SWTOR, with all the money in the world to spend, decided that a STAR WARS game should have space on rails. WTF..

fuck it. I swear to christ imma play magic: the gathering...

I need PvP

entropia, while I like the game, is the most expensive MMO in the history of the world. OP, unless you have mounds of cash to blow, don't play this. some people spends thousands(yes you read that right, thousands) of dollars A MONTH on this game. it's fun, but it's tedious unless you invest at lest, say 40-50 bucks a month on it, and thats the bare minimum if you want to have a good time in there..hope you find a good game, I'm looking too..

it can be difficult to get started at first, because EVE is such a complex game, but, if you like PVP, EVE is the best of the best. player-run economy, massive gameworld, politics, drama, treachery, backstabbing, asshats and good people.

it's like washington DC :)

my advice: do the tutorials, don't skip any part of it. there are a series of 5 10-part(each) missions that, by playing through them, will teach you the basics. ask a lot of questions in CORP CHAT, not rookie chat, you'll see when you get in there. EVE requires a lot of research to get right, but, I'll tell ya, no other game has made my hands shake like EVE. it requires a brain. be smart and trust NO ONE. have fun :)

well, I hope they do make space "free-fly", and they should have done so at launch. it's star wars, FFS, what were they thinking? and they could have saved themselves the 50 mil on VO, gamers will be turning it right off. gameplay is all that matters. VO is nice, but fluff(and, I would imagine, lag-increasing fluff at that).

It's certainly not washed up, but I've moved on. I enjoy flying my ship in games, not just orbit, approach, etc. manual flying via right-clicking the area you want to go to is there too, but its not the same as actually flying your ship like you can in BP and BSG(both of which I've tried as well). I played EVE for years and had a good time, but, I like direct control, and eve can't offer that. I had more fun in a BSG fleet battle yesterday than in any  EVE fleet battle I've ever been in (and I've been in plenty).

EVE. Period. I just wish I wasn't so terrible at it :\

impressive graphics(the guys who did STO should take note, because this is ship interiors done right), but, it's still space on rails, and rails are fail. they have the budget; they could have used JTL as a template and given us something truly amazing in space, instead of a (admittedly pretty) tack-on rail-fail. c'mon TOR devs, give us the whole deal in space, not a mcnugget.

Thanks for the info, also its the unofficial RP pvp server I think? the one you mentionned with overpopulation of villain. Also I dont care much about trolls, This game is incredible. Maybe in long term you will have to reroll some other heroes/villain, but for someone with a job and kid, this is perfect.

I love the action, graphics are so nice and not demanding CPU / GPU wise. I got a m17x r2 with single graphic and its almost maxed out with smooth frame rate, good optimisation.

Also Is there a lot of pvp in arena and stuff or its way better on PVP. Ive been rolling some toons on PVE server for now.

D&G is the unofficial RP-PVP server.

I'n on death and glory, confirming high villain pop, although I think its getting more even..doesn't matter though, because its fun. yesterday, I was missioning with my superman-inspired hero, found some giant gorilla boss-type thing sitting on top of a building. I engaged, and a villain jumped me during the fight. got away the first time cause the gorilla knocked me off the building after encasing me in ice, I came back, the villain got me, but so what. good time had by all :)

edit: actually, not sure if it was the villain who iced-d me or if it was the gorilla, but w/e

I've only had the game 3 days, and I've already rolled and re-rolled a ridiculous number of chars, both hero and villain-side. I think I actually had 6 chars made on one server, and I never got a message saying I had too many at once. probably 8 is max. and I can't decide what to make my main :(. I do know that the powersets are fun. I think I'll make a nature one now..haven't tried that.

First let me start by saying what follows is more of a guide to understanding the combat system,  how to spec a character early on to be competitive on the PvP servers, and the utmost basic understanding of combative tactics in DC Universe Online.

For those more interested in the discussion of why "Oldschool" MMOers won't get it, skip to the end.

In DCUO you essentially have 3 major kinds of attacks that you can utilize with your SKILL set.  Your skill set is essentially your weapons set, which is made up of combo skills and innate powers.  Each set is comprised of these things, and each of them have counter attacks associated with them.

When you start a new character, the most important attacks to have are basic, and available to you within your first 3 skill points.  To stay competitive in PvP you must get these first.

  • 1)   Leap Attack :     You need your leap attack.  This is usually a skill utilizing the holding of the left mouse button, or the Square button on the PS3 controller. (X on the 360.)

  • 2)  Block Breaker:   You need your block breaker.  This skill is usually done by holding the right mouse button, or Triangle on the PS3 Controller (Y on the 360.)

  • 3)  Combos:     You need your first combo set.  This may vary depending on the weapon skill you choose.   Your first combo could knock down the opponent,  knock up the opponent, or stun them.

  • 4)  Blocking/Rolling:   The last ability you need to know is how to block attacks which is set as shift for PC,  Right Button for PS3 and 360 (not right trigger)

Now for basic mechanics. I.E. Rock, Paper, Scissors.  Please use the list above for reference.

A)  When an opponent does a combo meant to knock down, knock up, knock back, or stun,  you block. This will result in them being knocked down.

#4   >   #3

B)  When an opponent notices a block and tries to utilize their block breaker,  you leap attack. This will result in you stunning them.

#1   >  #2

C)  When an opponent is blocking, you utilize a block breaker.  This will result in you stunning the opposing player.

#2   >   #4

D)  When you see an opening in your opponents defenses, whether they are knocked down,  stunned, or knocked up, utilize your combos to keep them from launching a counter attack.

#3   =  stun / knock back / knock down / knock up

E)  If you see your opponent block and roll,  use a leap attack to stun them so that they cannot get away.  This will result in you stunning the other player.

#1  >  rolling

F)  If you see an opponent utilizing a power that requires a charge time,  you leap attack or combo to interrupt. Very useful against healers. This will result in stopping the player from casting.

#1  or #3  >   Powers with no instant cast time

G)  If an opponent is trying to leap attack at you,  blocking will knock them down instantly.

#4  >   #1

H)  Lastly if  and/or   after you are knocked down,  stunned, etc.  use your block button to break out so you can continue fighting.  For stuns it may call for repeated hitting of the left mouse button.

#4  >  stuns/ knockback / knockup

Following these basic steps will get your foot in the door for all those looking to PvP or for those just wanting to know more about the combat system and how it can help you in PvE too.   PvE mobs will utilize knockbacks,  stuns, etc.  and knowing what these moves are and how to counter can be the difference between life and death.

Why do the "old school" MMO players not like this system?  Theres no specific class structure dictating an advantage.  A healer has no more advantage over a Tank who has no more advantage over a controller.  There are no rock/paper/scissors classes,  just attacks and counterattacks.

Theres no perfect mix of classes for your team members to win a battle,  only the perfect mix of skillful players.  Theres no click and wait for the next move,  there are only actions and reactions, and quick thinking.

Theres no instant combination to win,  nor are there pieces of gear that will overpower a player so much they will win every battle.  There are gankers who gank the level 9  when they are level 20,  and then the level 9 that kills the level 20 ganker.   With the information above you may not be able to win every battle,  but you'll make it damn hard for others to beat you.

Many games before this glorifies time spent and they have that time spent = your accomplishment both in the world and in battle.  Here,  a strong player can be known by his combative competency alone,  and he can do so way before max level.

In this sense,  the game is very progressive in terms of both combat,  and level disparity.  It may be quite possibly the most important part of the game,  and one of the major pieces they've done right that will keep players playing.   When the new blood coming in can be competitive as the veterans with just a little know how, it makes for a very engrossing game.

very useful. thanks. I noticed that, even just futzing around in pvp you can be somewhat competitive. I mean, I've been ganked by a 20 when I was 3, so that was no contest, but I just had a nice 1v1 air-to-air combat fight(which, let me just say FUCKING ROCKS) with a level 11 on my level 4 char and, although i lost, if I'd had some soder cola or some other powerup I probably had a good chance of winning.  the pvp in the game is good. it need some rewards, some tweaks, but, it's good. having a very good time :)

well, I got through the tutorial with a hero, and got out into the open world. gotta say, I love the game so far. combat feels good, like I'm fighting. takes some effort. like the graphics, like the feel of the game. destructible environments, able to thrown things, all good. movement(I chose acrobatics) awesome, love climbing up buildings etc. as far as pvp, got ganked twice by a level 20 and I'm only level 3 :) that could be an issue, if it happens to often. but, again, you don't seem to lose anything when you die so w/e. having a blast, thinking of making a diff kind of char now. I have alt-itis anyway, which also could be an issue. gotta say, it's worth the $50 in my humble opinion.
