What people are asking for here is a game within a game, I see a lot of comparisons between TOR space combat and SWG/JTL, but yet people are failing to mention that JTL was a full on expansion. A whole new box dedicated to space combat not a content patch, but a whole freaking box. People need to get over themselves and except it for what it is, just be lucky it's not like the space mini game in KoTOR, or better yet that there is space combat at all.

Look STO it has a fully fledged space experience and yet it is lacking in the ground combat department. ST revolves mostly around space and space exploration yet people complain about the lack of a ground game. When devs do these types of games it's hard to build them on two fronts, because time and resources are limited. MMO players in today's games demand to much, they want everything all at one time.

You people need to realize that there will be patches and there will be expansions, this I want it now mentality needs to stop. Apparently space combat wasnt that big of  deal for the general testers or the weekend testers, because I didn't see any  complains in game or on the beta boards regarding it.

Yes ground combat lacking in Sto but that is about to change now they working hard now to get good ground combat to now it has a new ground  targeting system. And Bioware really need a good space combat as well. sorry for my bad English

I don't think these responses are covering the facts accurately. I've been in beta for the past 3 months (ended today) and there are a number of things that lend itself to exploring beyond datacrons.

  • There are named elites that no quest will ever direct you to; you only stumble upon them if you go exporing. These named mobs typically drop a green item and at times a blue.
  • If you're a Slicer then you can go on the search for data terminals and you will find them in the oddest areas far out of your normal path. And with the retail build they no longer glow so you really need to keep an eye out for them or you'll run right by it because they blend in very well.
  • Other resources (at times rarer) for scavanging and bioanalysis.
  • I've located chests that spawn in odd areas and the typical yield is a green item and at times a blue. Some are in the direct path, others are far out of your way.
It's in the hands of the player as to whether or not they wish to be explorers or just stay on the beaten path. I personally like to search out every nook and cranny because I'm often finding something of note or immediate value so it's worth my time to check it all out between or enroute to a quest.

A different type of exploration is in the quest itself. I've rolled many characters of the same class during beta and "explored" the different aspects and quest choices and their repercussions. Playing a Sith with a focus on light sided questing or jedi with a view to the dark side yields a refreshingly different experience compared to the traditional routes.

The game is very deep in its own rite but no game can be everything to all.

No offense, but some chests, resources (that you can get other ways), and the odd monster?  That's it?

Honestly I wouldn't call that "deep."

Swtor has more content what wow ever hade at launch.

And I'll give you some reason's why;

- Just like when I read a book, I make up in my own mind how the hero will sound.  If it isn't even close it's a big kill-joy.  For those that might have read the Dirk Pitt books, just look at Matthew M (Dirk) and his side kick Al G. plus all the rest.  Nothing like you'd expect from the books.

- While no-name actors might be cheap, if you spinkle in any stars the cost goes way up.  A number of actors have said they actually prefer phoning in work for commerials (especially Japanese ones) instead of doing movies since they pay better in time spent.

- If you pick the wrong actor it bites you in the behind.  STO used the new Spock and the yells of outrage where such they redid the work with Leonard Nimoy.  In this case my first point also comes into play, Spock should sound like Spock.

- For a game without a voice back story be it SWToR or even Freelancer who you pick doesn't mean quite as much, unless my first point comes into play.  A dork still sounds like a dork.  How many of you would be saying VO's are great if your hero sounded like he'd been sucking helium?

Wall's of text a la LotRO - No.  Short and sweet like AoC - much better.  Ya VO's might be nice in a game but not; from a business point of view, if it ties up production time and a good chunk of your budget.

sorry but i dont aggre whit you this is only your opinion its time to take mmo to next level.

its must have now  no way that i gona go back to none voice overs.

Nice! thanks so much. nr 1. :)

Console ports are here to stay 90% of the games today are made for consoles. Thats where the money is. Most games are bought for the Consoles not the PC. Go to your local Best Buy or Game Stop and look at the Dwendling PC section, PC's will NEVER go away. To many uses. but as far as gaming goes, it has now taken the back seat. It's a hard pill to swallow, seeing as how the PC is Greater than any console could ever be. with a Console, Every user is on an even playing field. no longer do you have to check,"Is my system enough to run this new game?" Joe Shmo has a better rig so he has the upper hand. Damn, I have to upgrade my Graphics card to run this one.

All things of the Past with a Console.

I LOVE PC gaming, but I see the writing on the wall. At least us PC Gamers still have MMO's............ For Now,

yea and that SUCKS big time Console is PCs worse enemy thats why we dont gona see the real power of pc games.

Companions are a great part of any Bioware games, there is no argument here, they don't always worked perfectly, but at least good enough to not give you head hash, and i'm sure it will be the same in SWTOR. But the point the OP is discussing is still very valid. Companions are a must in a solo game, why make it a must in a mmo? I mean wouldn't it have been more logical that i could be the companion of the OP for example, I as a player, and not an NPC? Can you do that in SWTOR? No you cannot, and really i have just brought the first argument coming to my mind, its not like i have a team behind me thinking during months about game design, its not even my profession.

Which is what Whilan is saying. -.-

Companions doesn't have to be used. They are given to you and it is left to the player to be used or not.

From a game design point of view, this is like making every class a pet class.

EA/BW took it to the next level by introducing the story element.

Yea becouse the companions dosent do any huge impact to the game anyway you can craft by your self and you can solo whit out them to.

Gratz who get invite and make this game good! As an EU player I'm treated like shite by BW (we are getting into beta soon, very soon, imminent, asap, whatever) so I can only hope to play a polished and good MMO :)

No more so than the rest of the world gets treated by EU Devs when they create a game and test in there home areas first before opening it up to a wider testing audience.

Well maybe they are affraid get a to big negetive respons to the game here in EU what do I know.

This old news.

I just saying this http://nooooooooooooooo.com/

While many people will continue to rage against the notion of a release date slip, it's all good with me.  Regardless of SWTOR's release date, I know I can be enjoying some open-world rpg-goodness in the form of Skyrim.  I say let Bioware work the kinks out and deliver the best possible product and service on release day, even if that release is pushed back.  Heck, we've been waiting several years, we can wait a little longer.

I agree about not caring if the release date slips, but for different reasons.

SWTOR felt like it jumped the shark a few weeks after they announced pre-orders.  The longer they kept us holding out for a release date the less interested I became.  The longer they held out on subscription pricing details, the less I cared.  Now I find myself utterly indifferent to anything related to SWTOR.

I'm not bitter about a lack of release date, nor am I excited when I hear news about the beta.  I just don't care anymore.

And I personally don't think they understand how what they've done has made many of us feel about their game.   For this oversight I place the blame squarely on the heads of EA's marketing team.  They seem to think they can treat people like "mushrooms" and we'll eat it up.

Now that said, I have pre-ordered, but when I did so it raised the expectation that they would at least be prepared to set a release date.  Then if they really need to push it back, and can give good reasons (not we need more time to "polish" crap...), then its all good.  Failing to do so, however, makes BioWare appear like a bunch of paranoid amatures.  Which only serves to reinforce my "Meh!" feeling about the game.

Also, don't give me guff about appearing not to want them to "polish"... I was completely willing to give them all the time in the world.  Before they started taking money on it "ahead of time".  Now I want a date!  And I don't care if its some time in 2012, and they can't get the servers stable so its pushed into 2013.  I want a Release Date.

Without it I'm on the verge of asking for a refund (on my Pre-Order) and switching my interest to GW2.

I've never seen more demanding people in my life.

welcome to 2011 of course ppl is demanding then it comes to mmo genere the game companys out there compete about our money ither they doing it right or get lost so simple is it.

I have this really odd idea...I know its strange, but why don't we wait and see what it's like...There are some browser games that are good, and some coming out that sound good as well... Everyone has this STUPID idea that what they want is what everyone else in the world wants.

Just wait and see what the game is going to be.

Sorry but i dont belive in Browser concept.

I really do wonder though, in the recent interview they stated that they intend to attract in the veteran and competitive crowd as well? with a browser game? lol?

Do not underestimate browser based games, Battlestar Galactica Online showed us that they are innovative and almost as completely functional as most other non browser based games.

are you serious that crap Battlestar Galactica Online is a damn joke.

This is what makes me wanna cry. I don't want a game where my father will hold my hand... If I do stupid things I should be hurt, if I jump off a cliff I should die.
Whats up with the handholding?

Their goal is millions of players, not thousands of players. Things like killing your character are counter to that goal. It's a game, not a virtual world.

Sorry but what has this anything to do whit millions of ppl you dont think that ppl playing swtor anyway if your companion dies.

I to  pre ordered the CE edition

.....I'm just saying that it's not a good option for people that care about their guild more than they do about themselves.......  They defeated the encounter, the got the reward, they should have the opportunity to decide how it gets distributed.

THEY will have the opportunity to decide how it gets distributed.   YOU won't.  That's what's bothering you.  God forbid that everyone in the guild should have a say.  That just ain't right is it?

Jesus, i'm starting to think people have never been in a proper raid guild.  When the GUILD decides to have a leader, or to use DKP or to use /random 100, then it is THE GUILD that decided how loot is distributed.  When an item drops and is given randomly to someone in the raid, THE GUILD decides nothing.

If you actually wanted to have a guild vote on every single item, with this system - you CANNOT.

(And yes, I'm assuming raid drops are bind-on-pickup just as they are in majority of the games.  if stuff can be traded the system is a non-issue aside from making it harder to logistically manage)

thats why i say no to that old system its time for something new.

I like this very good  ide no more greddy ppl.

You know...to be honest this argument could be applied to just about any MMORPG (and most RPGs) for that matter.

Lightsabers are lethal and logically should kill very quickly.

You know what else is lethal?

Swords, axes, bullets, blaster bolts, arrows, magic fireballs, explosions, grenades...I could go on

And yet all of these things seem to just cause minor scratches that may eventually build up and kill somoene...but not for a long time.

Maybe but a laser saber is suposed to melt down a meter thick of enforced door, this scene is in every damn SW film, carton or whatever. This kind of scene stay on the people mind; So when they watch a SW game and see light saber being as efficient as nerf bat, it just doesn't work. You can claim all you want it is absolutly normal, the fact is; it is not, and probably for the majority of people, maybe even you.

It also sticks in my mind when someone gets shot with a gun and subsequently dies in that movie....what was it..oh yeah, every single action movie involving a gun.  Or when someone gets shot in the head with a shotgun and their head disappears.

The funny thing though is that Star Wars did a good job of desensitizing the audience to the lethality of blasters. I mean I think I've only seen a Stormtropper hit their mark once in the original series and when they did Leia (the target) survived with just a nick.

I know when Matrix Online was in beta many of us complained about the sub-par lethality of guns, and that was even in an IP where dodging bullets was common place.

After posting my reply I got to thinking the exact same thing.  People want to over value lightsabers but the problem is the people who used lightsabers were the three or four most central characters to the story if you remove the laser blasters from the stormtroopers you could say the same thing about laser blasters especially when they were in the hands of Han Solo,Lando, or Leah.

BTW didn't she get grazed in the head or am I just remembering that from spaceballs "my hair, you shot my hair.".

Yeah good point.  When people are whining that lightsabers aren't powerful enough, they are really just complaining that they don't have "main character power" in an MMORPG :).

yea you fan boys never whining good for you.
