And alot of people feel the way.  Hence part of the reason wow is doing so well... I like to think of it more as I am looking for more of a challenge then im looking for forced Socail interaction.

Either way.  Group or solo content.. I stick by the comment in my original post that being driven through the game by quests, takes something away from what we clasicly consider a MMORPG

On a personal level I have no problem with anyone doing anything solo.  If thats what you enjoy go for it.

All I am saying is when you remove the need for social interaction you lose something in a MMORPG at least in my opinion.  Its almost like we need two sub categories of MMORPG.  Group oriented, and causally social. But MMORPGGO is one hell of an acronym so mabye not.

Now im not making the comparison to hardcore vs casual gamers here.

Simply solo oriented content vs Group oriented content.  There is no reason you can not group and accomplish something in a 45 min gaming session.   A number of games over the years have tried to put in equal ammounts of group and solo Content and have suffered for it in the long run by not being able to make both happy.

Oddly enough quests are what I believe are killing the MMORPG. All the new games are going towards solo-able quests to move you through the content.   Which I think takes a lot away from the game.
Think about it this way. In every game message board there is a post about how they wish they could capture the feel of their first MMORPG.  No matter how much they might like a game very few people feel the same draw that they did when they first started EQ1. Now we can argue all day long about SOE bashing, bad customer support. Etc etc. I’m not saying the game was the best or that it’s better than anything else… All I’m talking about in this post is not being able to find anything that re-creates the feeling you had when you first started.

This could be a few reasons but I believe when you get right down to it. MMORPGS have lost their single most important corner stone. .. And that is social interaction. The game styles of the earlier MMORPGS led you to have to interact more socially. Because of that you made friends earlier and kept them longer, you made enemies too; you built a reputation that was good or bad. All because you got in that first Dervish group in the common lands hoping for the rings, or got in a CB group and fought your way tooth and nail to the castle.    Building those relationships early on is what draws us into the games, and keeps us there. Through bad patches, nerfs and terrible customer service.
When you don’t have to group up till you hit your 40’s you never build those relationships and even if you do they just are not the same.
Sadly this is not even close to as long as what my first post was supposed to be but.. I’m in a conference call now and I just can’t devote the time needed to re-write it all the way
But as for the title. Static camps and contested spawns.   I think are what helped generate those relationships.  Places where people congregated to adventure.
Now I’m not saying quests are bad.. I’m just saying that the current quest model leaves alot to be desired.    Back in the day your movement around the word was to help friends, destroy enemy’s or just because you wanted to go see a new area. Not because you were pushed in that direction. All of the newer MMORPGS to me feel like I’m playing a regular RPG and I’m progressing through the content rather than experiencing it.

Maybe that’s what I should have titled this post. Progression vs Experiencing is what’s killing MMORPGS.

/shrug I dont see classic eq server happening.  It would be nice but the man hours vs reward just does not seem to match up.

I am one of thouse that wants a classic server.  Or at least up to velious.

But no matter how much maddoc has tried to appeal to everyone on the progression servers.  Sony is still a company.  I truly dont belive that a classic server would generate enough intrest to have a whole server to its self .  Or at least enough intrest in the long run. People would show up play a bit and then once they had done everything they would leave again and sony would be stuck with a server that they couldnt even merge.

Now one thing they have been talking about is changing the requierments for the progression server.   Increasing the time between unlocks,  Or what events you have to complete to unlock the next server.  Is it a perfect solution?? no... but.. It would allow you to enjoy the classic areas longer.

On a side note if your looking for a new classic experience you might want to try one of the bigger emulators some of them are quite impressive.  PM me if your interested I wont post about it.

I was going to write a response to this… But after about 5 or 6 attempts at writing a constructive response, I just gave up.  An individual posts about a situation that displeased them (regardless of its veracity) and it devolved into a 7 page flame fest on multi boxing, grammar, and Sony bashing.    Minus the one person who actually had a constructive e-mail on some of the options you could take to either hit Sony where it hurts or be quiet and keep playing.   I kind of feel like I was reading a Clinton vs. Obama transcript.

Good luck to you all.

I wish you all the best of luck.

In general they have been upgrading the zones slowly.  I know the Dark elf starting zone and a few others have already had a complete overhaul.. Look good too.  I think GUK, freeport,  might have had an overhaul.

Its been a while since I logged in.  But there are just so many zones in EQ that its not going to happen quickly and I dont think they have posted any kind of timeline on it.

As for the model updates.   No real timeline on that either but I think they are currently working on the human models

Thats the impression I got.  But no timeline on it.   They have more or less maxed out the progression server now.

I thought it was pretty good myself.  But as always they never give out that much in the way of specifics.   I had to leave before it was over.  But the big things I took away from it were.

1) Healing.  They are going to look into making it more then complete heal chain casting,

2) There will be another progression server it looks like.

3) plans to upgrade char models.

4) Intiative to get old players to come back. (not much info on this one but it seems they are going to make catching up to your buddys a better experience)

There was quite a bit more but my brain seems to have locked up do to this confrence call im on, so I cant remember the rest... someone else can fill in the gaps.

I enjoyed the chat myself.   I thought they did a good job of answering some of the questions.   I was just a little disappointed in the lack of information on a few items.  Which I am sure had more to do with trying to build up some hype about the game and the upcoming changes then it was being intentionally obtuse.
I am actually looking forward to the upcoming game changes and the next progression server that will be released.   The game play in everquest has always been one of my favorite. I would love to see a re-influx of players. I would leave every other game in a heartbeat to go back to eq if some of the more glaring problems get resolved. Healing, catching up with friends, etc, etc.

Honestly I think as with most games and most professions in the world the EQII devs are overworked and underpaid.

Desert of flames does not see much usage any more it seems most people are either in the original zones or ROK so if they only have so many man hours in the day. Why would they focus most of their time on some of the more under used content?

On the useing the same content over and over.  I would have to say EQII is no worse than any other game.  WOW is terrible about it, EQ1 was even worse. I tend not to like the general char GFX in EQII less then many others but... its one of my few gripes.

Personally I give the EQ II devs props.  They came out with a TERRIBLE product initially and have systematically been working through the issues and making it better.  I love it now.  The sad part is a lot of people have moved passed it and left it behind when it has a lot to offer.

Personaly I dont think its lacking much.   I think the biggest thing working against it is.   It got off to a bad start and people just havent given it another shot

You should not have to enter your activation code again.   Just try and login using your old account.  It shoudl tell you the account is not active and prompt you to activate it, no need to enter code again

Alas sorry times for the smallfolk.   they are just fodder for the swords of the enemys.

when you take over the castle there should be changes in the small folk's clothing to the color of your guild... as well as guards in your colors.  not enough guards to turn back a seige but enough to keep out individuals and small groups

I belive there were some mods created for NWN and the Elderscrolls series.

Im thinking the best plan for the game would be to have it based on guilds... castles.. and politics.

Not instanced castles but live out in the open castles... where if your guild has the strength to lay seige to and capture a castle you can raise your flag above it and make it your own

but if you can keep it your guild can rake in taxes from your small foke.  The only problem is once you have it.. people are going to want to take it from you..

You will have to have suffiecient strength to defend it from rival factions, NPC bandits, wildlings etc etc.

Dont want to defend your own castle hire a mercinary company (PC GUILD) to do it for you.  For a price they will walk your walls... die for you ... but be carefull.. for a better offer they will turn on you.

there are just so many options.  each castle will be able to be a center for commerce.

Basicly i want to take the best parts from DAOC, Shadowbane, Planetside. and make it into a truly great game with all the lore from the books.

Anyone else think that George Martins Song of ice and fire series would make one hell of a PVP based MMORPG..

There is so much back story, history, conflicts, factions etc etc..  The lore in the game would be amazing...
