Wow, it will be interesting to see how this project at Georgia Tech evolves. Fascinating article. It'll be interesting to how this more academic, exploratory method to game design impacts the commericial MMORPG industry in the next 10 years. As is pointed out in the article, since they're not accountable to financial backers, projected release dates, or even consumer tastes, they have an amazing freedom that companies do not.

no way a new player will do all this to play this game

I think V:SoH is falling prey to the fact that it's one of the FIRST MMORPGs to require the system specs it does. A year from now, when a host of new games require similar specs for decent gameplay, that's when most gamers will probably sink the cash into upgrades. It does seem a bit silly to upgrade your system for one game if your comp is adequate for every other function you use it for. I've only been in BETA for the last week. My comp exceeds all minimum system requirements (though I only have 1G RAM) and play is just too laggy in populated areas. I feel your pain and I'm anxious to see how play improves as we get deeper into BETA 5. I think Sigil could've taken a lot of heat off themselves if the game were actually playable with the minimum system requirements, which it very well may be upon release. I'm sure a lot of folks who met the minimum system requirements, preordered, and are now experiencing the lack of playability in BETA 5 are just thinking that they may have thrown $50 bucks out the window unless they wanna sink a few hundred dollars into their comps. I think we should let 'em fume without jumping down their throats.

I defragged my comp, set all the settings to low, and everything else that people suggested on the boards, but this didn't help much. You figure your average comp user, unless you're a tech fanatic, probably purchases a new computer every 3-5 years. Basically, this game's player base (from a technological level) will have to be composed of people who have amped up their old system or purchased a high end gaming-oriented machine in the last year? I hope this isn't the case and they're just working out bugs in BETA, hence the lag for individuals whose system specs fall closer to "minimum" then "recommended." I'm really excited about this game and have enjoyed experiencing the small amount of it I've been able to thus far, but I personally am not going to sink money into system upgrades and/or a new comp for V:SoH when everything else runs on my machine fine and I'll be upgrading my system anyways in 6 months to a year. |
