Interview with Ju-hyun Jang, Producer, Aion: The Tower of Eternity

At E3 2006, a key member of Studio 5 (Aion's development team) walked unnoticed through the crowds around NCsoft's booth. He watched people's reactions as they experienced Aion: The Tower of Eternity for the first time. Asking a few people what they thought of the game, everyone raved about the incredible graphics and ethereal quality of the characters; there were plenty of comments that the game looked ready to release. He replied, "I can only see the flaws."

His reaction was understandable, given how much work had already been done on Aion, and how much more he knew had to be done to make it absolutely perfect. So straight after E3 the development team returned to Korea, and launched into the next phase of Aion's development.

They already had much more to add to the game, but feedback from show attendees and fans on the internet demanded more. Characters that flew occasionally weren't enough; people wanted free flight, the ability to go almost anywhere in the worlds of Aion. And if you can fly, they argued, why can't we have aerial combat? Clashes between factions in the sky, battling for the fate of Aion... so Studio 5 got to work.

Five months later, both free flight and aerial combat are in the game, and Studio 5 is working to ensure that they are a large part of players' adventures in Aion. But why is free flight so important? Where do you need to go in Aion that would be inaccessible by foot?

To understand the answer you have to understand more about the unique world of Aion, and where the game's two playable factions - the 'Chun' and the 'Ma' fit into it. To find out more, we spoke to Ju-hyun Jang, Producer for Aion.

A vertical plane

Aion's universe exists beyond the normal rationales of science. In the beginning, Aion was a single world, a hollow globe intersected vertically at its core by the Tower of Eternity. After a cataclysmic event that occurs in the game's pre-history, the top and bottom halves of the world are split in two, with the Tower of Eternity reduced to a shattered ruin.

Jang explains further: “The world of Aion resembles a globe, divided horizontally into two halves. The lower half is the world of the Chun, the upper half is the world of the Ma. So basically the world-map of Aion is not on a horizontal plane, like a traditional fantasy world; instead it's vertical. With this in mind, some parts of both worlds can only be accessed from the air - such as floating castles, and islands in the sky. Because of this, all of the player characters can gain wings."

Between the two worlds of Aion is another important location; the 'Abyss', an area of dimensional rifts where gigantic pieces of rocky debris are suspended. Left behind after the destruction of Aion's original single world, some of these rocks are used as military outposts by the Chun and the Ma.

This sets the stage for a unique Player vs Player experience within the Abyss, where free flight will be vital, and where stategic battles will be fought over massive fortresses. PvP isn't all Aion players can look forward to in the Abyss though; instanced missions will also be found here, as well as the server-controlled third faction, the battle-hungry Yong....

Q. Tell us about the free-flying function in Aion. How is it being designed?

Though I cannot discuss any specifics at this time, I can tell you we are trying to design this feature so that it has a unique feel to it.

Free-flying will be one of the most important skills players will learn in Aion. However, you won’t have to spend an extensive amount of time in the game to be able to learn this skill.

Q. There seems to have been a lot of interest in the character designs since E3. Can you also tell us something about character customisation?

A lot of people have remarked that our E3 demo characters were somewhat Western-style. This was deliberate; we built the E3 demo intentionally for overseas markets.

However, we're still committed to an art style that's globally acceptable. We've been refining the character designs, and we'll be unveiling characters soon in Korea that will be different from the E3 versions, but will still reflect that global art style.

In terms of character customisation, we will provide a very powerful character customisation tool – perhaps more powerful than anything else you’ve seen.

Characters in Aion can be very individual, right from the game's beginning. Each of the in-game professions will look quite different, but also there will be many options to change your appearance based on the equipment, armour and clothing a character wears.

Q. There seems to be a preconception about the worlds of the 'Chun' and 'Ma'. The world of the 'Chun' feels good, and the world of the 'Ma' feels evil. Is it this simplistic?

No, it's not that simple; it's not black and white, more shades of grey. A lot of users are thinking the world of Chun = good, the world of Ma = evil. But it’s not a simple concept of good and evil, or heaven and hell. The world of Chun is more alive, vibrant; the world of Ma is more somber... darker.

This is partially because of our current thinking about Aion's global environment. Right now, light streams down from outside the hollow globe to illuminate the Chun's world, but as the world of Ma is higher, it's mostly in shadow, as less light reaches it. This may change before release, but it's our current thinking.

Q. Tell us about the Yong.

The Yong are a server-controlled NPC faction, so players cannot choose to play them.

However, just because they are controlled by the server doesn't mean they are stupid; they can make choices, and players will never quite know what they are going to do.

For example, imagine a castle siege-style scenario, where one of the player factions, the Ma, is attacking the Chun faction's castle. In the middle of this siege, the Yong may appear.

When they arrive, no-one will know what they are going to do. They may have previously helped the Ma, but that doesn't matter; in the siege, they might betray them and help the Chun. Or they might help the Ma to siege the Chun's castle. Or... they might try and take the castle for themselves, fighting against both the Chun and the Ma.

The important thing to realise is that the Yong are not typical NPCs. They are the third faction in the game, and they have free will, which makes them very unpredictable.

Q. The Yong are just part of Aion's interactive gameplay systems; could you tell us more about them?

As mentioned at E3 2006, what we mean by 'interactive systems' is that the players and game world influence each other.

For instance, perhaps the Ma players on one server are generally more active in collecting minerals than the Chun players. As more Ma players dig for minerals, then they might discover a new variety of mineral. This mineral could be stronger than any mineral seen before, and could be used for the creation of various, unique items. This would be something happening on just that server.

On the other hand, what if the Chun players are more interested in hunting? They might be hunting in a location where baby dragons are appearing a lot, then suddenly find that no more baby dragons will appear - but stronger mother dragons will come out! And of course when new monster classes appear, they bring new item drops with them. There are many, many examples of how player's behaviour can trigger interesting events - all on individual servers.

These are small examples of our interactive systems of gameplay, which together will make up the unique experience of playing Aion. Every server can be different, and every player's experience can be different too.

Q. A frequent criticism of certain MMORPGs is that there can be too much 'grinding' in the game - the repeating of certain tasks for experience. Is that the case for Aion?

During development we've focused on not adding ‘grinding based on numbers’ to arbitrarily extend the lifecycle of the game.

In Aion, you won't have to repeat one quest 100 times or kill 1,000 monsters just to gain experience.

Q. Are you considering expansion packs?

Of course. For instance there might be an expansion pack making the third faction, the Yong, playable.

Q. Kinihiko Ryo is doing the music for Aion. Is the music finished?

We have received all our music from Kinihiko Ryo, and we're very happy with it. The 'Chun-theme' was in the E3 version of the game, and since we've received the 'Ma-theme'. Both themes are really perfect for the game, they strike just the right mood for both factions.

Ryo is a very passionate person. While making the music, he asked for lot of documents and information about Aion, because he believed that he has to know the game if he's going to make the music. I sometimes thought “Does he really need that kind of information?” He was that detailed!

What I'd like to know is, what is everyone's opinion on combat in the sky? I think it sure opens a lot of possibilities.

no one cares about these lame Asian games.. This is going to be another stinker like Archlord no doubt.
it looks really laggy
have a tic tac
its a mobile game?
it seems kind of like the same old thing from the description and the vids.

there was an Age of Conan developer posting on the DF boards a-while back saying if they think it can actually compete with AoC and don't they think its about time to release it. nobody thinks much of dF sadly.

I want to inform the players of PlayNC and how they are treating their customers.

They publish many of the best looking, best playing MMORPG Games on the market today but This company is MONEY HUNGRY.

We have 3 games from the company, Guild Wars, COH and Linage 2 and within the last year, this company has Nerfed all three games making 2 out of the three harder to level, slowing down hit Cycle Times to extend the game instead of producing more game content all to MILK the players out of money by prolonging the grind times to level, get skills and or powers.

New players wont know the difference but the rest of us know the difference.

On lineage 2, in addition to an XP penalty upon death, certain classes also get a combat penalty so you can not duo box and take healers with you while xp grinding.

If you question, rub Mystril the wrong way, he will BAN your Board (forum) account for even mentioning anything about this.

Folks I do NOT know about you, but there are alot better things I can do with my money than to be treated like this from that company.

If you are thinking about buying ANYTHING from PlayNC, DONT, spend your money on other things, within days of this post, ALOT of new games and a console will be arriving in stores that merrit your attention.

no one cares........

Ok, I know this has been discussed in other threads of the same kind but I think people have missed a major logistical point of a BIG problem of shadowbane. Ok sure, I buy the fact that exploits, hacking, lag, major crashes and lack of pve or (beyond city building)lack of overall content killed shadowbane BUT what was a major contributing factor was the amount of loss attributed to losing a bane and/or war. (AKA they lost everything)

I mean lets face it, the mere concept of a Player vs Player game is to destroy your opponent but in the world of mmorpg, the consumer demands of something on a grander scale. For those of you that followed the game, after the first year a wide majority of the major guilds fell apart after A SINGLE LOSS. Sure you can chaulk this up to being poor sports but in reality, it took them months and 24/7 farming, lots of diplomacy and hordes of 60s to build up a city that was worth a damn. And, in one fell swoop, they lost it all in a bane. Where do you start out after that? From the beginning?

And, while Darkfall introduces a different kind of citybuilding, ship controling, etc etc.. it still doesn't answer the question of major losses. I mean come on, you guys know how it works, they'll be major guilds that create huge alliances that will dictate who does what.

Is there anything from stopping you from losing all your trade goods if you're playing a merchant? What if you lose your whole ship and resources as a pirate clan? How long does it take to build a city around a clanstone? Is it easy to capture mines?

Now i'm not claiming to know everything, because I don't. But isn't it curious that clanstone sounds like bind stone? Or that resources in the form of mines supply the city sound like sb? Or how "Strategically placed clanstone claming an area of land," sounds like shadowbane's realm ownership system?

What happens when a 20member strong clan gets destroyed after months of work on their home city? They'll quit that's what. And don't think they won't because whole clans left the game after realizing they'd have to start from square one after a big loss.

What does Darkfall give as an answer to this problem? None.

In the meanwhile, keep looking at those 9 new screen shots which to me looks like more of the same.

-Syloc of Brotherhood of Shadows, Mourning Server.

discussing anything to do with darkfall is pointless because its 100% vaporware and will never happen to begin with..

Havent you figured that out yet???

actually some things they havent learned from Shadowbane is to not develop something for 10 years because it gets outdated and worthless eventually..  oh and not to use a bunch of amateurs who have no idea what they are doing..  what can you do..

Seriously though... whats the attraction to vaporware???  I remember when WISH and Dark and light were both hyped up to high heaven too.

darkfall is a pipe dream.. get it thorugh your thick skulls already.

I'm not saying that UCL is a bad university or whatever (I haven't even looked it up), but the fact that it is in London kind of tells me not to get there... London is EXPENSIVE (from what I heard), and it isn't the calmest of places... not quite the setting I was looking for...

Just something that came to my mind.... why do you must apply to college in England 6-12 months before the year start? Here in Portugal you simply apply by July, after you get the results of your exams.... thats 2-3 moths before the academic year start.... I just find it odd to have to apply before even having my end grades.... does it mean I can have really bad grades this year, and those won't count to the aplication?

No, your grades will actually matter. What will happen, is you will apply, and then they will tell you "OK, we like the look of you, and with your other achievements (musical instrument grades etc.) you need 2 A's and a B to get in here". You should apply to 3-5 universities in descending order of merit. So if your first choice wanted 3 A's, but you only got 2 A's and a B, you'd have a backup. Oh, and just to make the point, you need to start calling it 'university' or 'uni' if you do come here. Calling it college will confuse the fuck outta everyone because our college is your high school.

I haven't actually got around to looking at prospectuses yet, so i'm not 100% sure on a recommendation. My sister just went to Kent though, and she did mention them having a great IT department. Might be worth a look.

Good luck!

school is overrated

youtube is completely useless as an advertising tool. 90% of the traffic to a site like that is underage teenagers or just bums that won't give a rats ass about their ads. The only reason they bought it was because it had 40%+ of the entire internets video traffic...

it would probably take the next 20 years to recoupe 1.6 billion dollars from ad sales off of youtube.

please, think a little first.

The communistic governments this world has seen have been little more than a half step up from a dictatorship, often with disastrous economic conditions. For example, The U.S.S.R. had enormous resources, plenty enough to crush its only real opponent at the time, the U.S. Instead, it was poorly used, and the economy soon collapsed under its own dead weight. However, this is far from what the original plan envisioned.

In an IDEAL communistic government:

The ones who are best at making decisions that will ensure the well being of ALL citizens and the country in general are the leaders, IE: not the smooth talker that looks the best on TV, or for that matter anyone more interested in their own personal agenda

Every citizen works towards a common goal, the well being of everyone around them.

No one goes poor, no one goes hungry, there is no such thing as a second class citizen.

My question to you is, what happened? Do you think there is a flaw in the model? Or perhaps the fault lies in human nature.

My personal theory is twofold:

1.) The saying goes that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Leaders with the kind of absolute power given to them in a communistic government will inevitabley go "sour" if they weren't to begin with.

2.) Laziness, in a free market economy, the harder one works, the more reward for your efforts is given. In a communist economy, the harder a person works, the better off the community as a whole becomes, but that diligent worker does not himself get any kind of measurable incentive. So, why work harder than you have to if nothing gets any better because of it?

Failure of communism? Theres no such thing as no communism. Every government is a communism. Theres just lesser degrees of it.

And the answer to that is yes, i went thru a period of really disliking the game and thinking about moving on to something else cuase really, i felt let down by the game. but then i came accross the shammy! and what a diffrence having the right class can make on a game, the storie lines and quest even though similar to the other classes, some how felt right and how things should be. Now don't get me wrong Wow still has alot that could be improved and mabe over time they will get there, but lets face it theres not one mmorpg out there that really fullfills our rpg wants and needs to the fullest....is there?

WoW is such a freakin stale joke. I played Asheronscall 1 for 3+ years before i finally got bored. I played Wow for like 4 weeks before I got bored.

So i was playing archlord and i mentioned in shout that i got my X to play on my free trial thingy. and, she said the dardenst thing. she said, "I wanna stay up all night and grind". honest to god, and she did for the most part, she actually learned Archlord quite well and has a level 10 mage lol. plays on her own. when i mentioned that people started saying they would pay me gold for her # ...i was so tempted....

Archlord blows..  these Asian grind MMORPG's are only liked by people who have very little commen sense and are entertained very easily.

LOTR is another lame EQ , WoW clone and nothing else... That isn't speculation - It's FACT.

This is the link to MMORPG's latest Vanguard video in the News room:

I am curious what others who are interessted in Vanguard think of what I saw when I viewed it.

Some nice video...in a way but:

This video is leaving me a bit concerned about the playability of this game on most current "gaming" computers. If you watch the video closely it seems the computer SOE is using is REALLY struggling with pushing the graphics. Not so much on the flying scenes, but the scenes with walking involved over the terrain. It's expecially noticable going through the archway/doorway; at the edges of the screen the graphics get really blocky. The part just after the horse running in the sand seems VERY choppy in what looks to be a pretty wide open, basic town environment. The scene with the lanterns stretching across the darkened streets shows much the same "strain."  I wonder how performance would be with say 20-30 other people moving in the scenes.

I realize they are still bug fixing, sharpening code, etc,but I assume SOE is using one of the best systems they can buy. I worry about the "above-average-core gamer's" experience.  It didn't seem like it was a Google video problem.  I could be totally off base but this is what I observed, and as one of those players it does leave me a bit concerned.

Vanguard is upcoming junk just like 99% of the rest of them all are. Bunch of rehashed Everquest trash.

No matter which game I play, how many trials I download, how long I play, what style of game it is; I cannot find a game to play. I was brought to the "MMO world" in grade seven when I started playing runescape with some of my classmates, during grade 9 I discovered that there were many more games out there however I didn't have a credit card and this shortened the potential list a great deal. I looked around for f2p games and discovered MU Online, which I played for quite some time before I became bored with the grind and stopped playing. In grade 10 I walked into Future Shop and bought tMxO without knowing there was a subscription fee, I repackaged and retaped the box and was able to return it and keep looking. Eventually I bought Guild Wars with the money I got when I returned The Matrix and played that for a few solid months, I became bored and went back to MU, and then back to GW. In the end I managed to play GW solidly for quite a few months, I accomplished many things and became an experienced, wealthy player. That is when I became bored again and I am once again at a loss.

So you see I am now in grade 11 without a game to play, this is my conundrum. I may soon have access to a credit card however this still leaves me wondering which game to play, I have looked far and wide with futile effort for a game to suit my needs, I was told that some games would have been perfect for me had they not been closed down, changed or ruined. So I am sitting here at my keyboard ranting for lack of anything of greater use to do with this time, there is a list of games with enough potential gameplay to fill a lifetime but I seem to have no interest in any of them. Pretty graphics and a decent storyline are not enough for me, I want to play a game that is fun instead of being a chore. I want to play a game where gaining new skills is an accomplishment instead of a task. I need some gratification from the game I play and thusfar I have not found it.

So I turn to you, the MMORPG gaming community, and I request your help. I am not coming here without doing my research and looking for others to do the work for me, I simply come with my final breathe and request that someone supply me with a title that can quench my thirst for true gaming excitement. I would not be suprised if such a game did not exist, however I would like you to help me try and find it.

Played:

Mu Online, Guild Wars, (very little) World of Warcraft, EVE Online, Runescape, Maplestory, Lineage 2.

I have looked over countless others, including almost every title on the gamelist and I need your opinions on what I should be playing to fill the void. I would not be suprised if many other gamers were also in my current position and hopefully eventually a solution can be found to cease the boredom. Until then I think I may be stuck with some FPS games and browser flashes.

/Rant off
