Gear progression is fine. But you need to balance it at least a little bit so people with better gear are matched against similar opponents. Otherwise you get heavily lopsided battles where neither the winner nor the loser has much fun. The point is that close matches are more fun for everyone and the current state of GSF makes finding a close match extremely rare. Imagine a warzone where you have a team of lvl 10-20's vs a team of lvl 55's. How do you think that match would end? That's many matches of GSF right now.

I want to start off on the note that this game has plenty of other good things going for it.  SWTOR does a lot of things right.  Galactic Starfighter is NOT one of them.

If you view it as a small diversion from normal gameplay to waste a little time, you might enjoy it.  If you're looking for something that will satisfy your X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter nostalgia, this is not it.

This is one of the most unbalanced games I have ever played.  Matches consistently end with one team winning (1000 points) and the losing team having less than 100.   If you have a premade group, because there is no matchmaker to sort out pugs and premades, you will dominate the battlefield.  If you're a pug, you may as well just kamikaze into one of the satelites and hope you don't get fried by one of the 10 gunships waiting to one shot you before you can even get there.

To top it off, when you're new, you'll be competing against people who have a drastic advantage over you.  Yes, skill counts for something in GSF, but gear counts for more.  So be prepared to get slaughtered match after match before you'll have enough requisition to compete.

Before you all jump on me and claim I'm just flaming because I must suck at it, I've been on both sides of the one sided matches.  I've been the slaughterer and the slaughteree.  And by the way, being on the winning side of a massacre is just as boring as being on the losing side.  What's uncommon is to actually be in a close match.

To sum up, if you already like SWTOR and view GSF as a casual way to vary your gameplay from time to time, this is for you.  If you're thinking of returning hoping to see an awesome Star Wars space combat game, save yourself the time and keep looking elsewhere.

Experienced MMOer looking for Blackgate guild with a primary focus on WvW.  PST

I'll preface this by saying I played a lot of WvW in the beta events, but no sPvP.  So my view is just from a wvw standpoint.

I didn't think the thief was UP even after the nerfs.  If anything it was a little OP before and they got it pretty close to fixed.  When I played it though, my main focus was mobility, not glass cannon builds/burst damage.  I wanted to be able to move all over the battlefield to the point where it seemed like I was in multiple places at once.  The thief is able to do that.  Load your build up with shadowsteps and you can sow major confusion in the enemy ranks.  Not to mention it has one of the best if not the best escape potential of any class.  Shadow step + infiltrator's arrow = I just teleported farther than you can shoot.

If you prefer to run with the zerg, scorpion wire = insta kill in WvW.  One of my favorite activities was snagging the occasional over aggressive elementalist and pulling him into the middle of our group to be eaten alive.

You may not get a lot of kills, but there is no question about your value to a team.

This actually looks fairly good I wish more fantasy MMOs implemented mounted combat its a pretty awesome feature. I just wish they had gone to effort to truly capture the essence of the tolkien universe in LoTRO instead of this WoWish themepark port, its good and I will certainly give it a try but I doubt I will stick with it for long if I am honest.

Yeah, this game used to be great back when it was launched because it did exactly that.  You actually felt like you were in the Tolkien universe.  The whole thing just felt like Lord of the Rings.  They lost that somewhere along the way as they tried to appeal to a larger audience.

Once they added the Runekeeper class (that literally shoots lightning bolts) and decided to take a big dump on the LOTR feel, I knew my time was limited.

I love it.  For months people are asking, no, demanding, a release date.  Saying they're being taken advantage of, citing consumer rights, threatening refunds and all sorts of fun stuff.

As soon as a release date is announced we get, "What are they thinking?! This game will fail."

Have to disagree about siege weapon damage.  I think high damage is appropriate considering what you're being hit with.  Dodging is integral to combat in GW2.  Keep your eyes on the red circles and do your best to stay out of them.

Sounds like some great changes.  Unfortunately it looks like we're only getting 500 more gems.  So no server transfers for those who wanted to switch to a friend's server.  Other than that, awesome stuff.  It's refreshing to see a company that listens to player feedback.

Well as long as you don't care about playing WvW with friends you can play everything else on their server.

That's kind of exactly what I wanted to do, lol

The game isn't ready for release. Q4 2012 or Q1 2013. That is when we might see a release.

Either you're in the CB and you don't want to share or you just enjoy spreading despair. -_-

Logic! Look at the great frist BWE they gave us. Yes it was great but also look at how much is yet missing from the game. What we seen was only about a 1/4 of a complete game. They still have a long ways to go before it is all completed and I think they needed the money to complete it.

I atleast hope they wait that long and don't release it without all the features like other MMOs.

It was stated that the CB build was not the most current build.  They used the one that was the most stable.  Could be plenty they've got done that they just havent moved to the CB build yet until they get it relatively stable for testing.

I expect the next release date post to be something like:

"GW2 dev seen eating chicken nugget shaped like snowflake with 12 fries left on his plate!  GW2 coming out in December 2012!"

I was scammed when I prepurchased the next Harry Dresden book! I paid in full without knowing a release date. Even worse the author hasn't written me personally nor has he let me read rough drafts on the weekend!

Oh noes!

And Twisted Metal too! I musta got scammed there, I paid in full months before release without knowing a release date for sure, and it cost just as much as GW2!

I must be gullible I am scammed so often. In fact people tell me I paid for beta for GW2 when I don't recall giving any extra cash so I could beta. I must be dumb.

Lol.  +1 to Jesse.

I agree with you completely. Every player should be given choice if he wants to show or hide their name. This goes for WvW only. In structured PvP everyone see your name.

I think the issue with this might be that you'll have people with the same names on both sides.  WvW being from different servers and all.

This game had it's chance.

It was and will continue to be plagued by a series of poor design decisions that the devs have neither the resources nor inclination to fix.

It would be very difficult for this game to escape its poor legacy and missteps by the devs, which are all well documented.

The fact that the game is now free, in no way mitigates the problems that have plagued this game from the beginning and kept it from becoming largely successful.

Those problems, which I need not go into now, are largely still there, the only thing that isn't is a sub fee, having been replaced by micro transactions.

In the end, making an average game free does not make it any better, only theoretically cheaper to play (and that may not even be so in practice).

Pass.

I tried this game again after it went FTP.  First of all, I've never spent a dime in the item shop and am actively participating in PvP and RvR (endgame content).  Item shop is in no way required to be competitive.  The game does still have its flaws (most of the same ones), but it's not just cheaper to play, it's truly free in the real sense of the word which goes a long way towards helping me look past those flaws.

Anyone who has ever subbed at one time gets all the perks of having a fully subbed account, now without the sub.  Brand new players will have to sub once and then cancel if they want to get the perks, or be content buying from the item shop which is again unnecessary for competitive play.  But if you've ever subbed before it really is completely free, no strings attached.

I agree wholeheartedly.

This is the boon of a game balanced around being able to solo the entire story arc.

(Accidental double post)

This game has the potential to be awesome, but they ruined it with a huuuge grind.  If we just had to lvl a little bit (or at least not level doing the same missions over and over again) in order to get to the large scale clan vs. clan PvP, the game would be perfect.

They need to choose their focus a little better.  They fancy themselves mainly a PvP game, but make you go through a slow repetive and pointless grind before you can do large scale PvP.  I say pointless because there actually isn't that much new equipment that becomes available as you level, just better versions of the same equipment you already have.

If they want this to be a PvP game, they need to cut the grind in half so we can get to the good stuff faster.  With half the grind, I'd be sold on this game for sure.  As it is right now, I don't think I'll bother playing it on release.

Is it just me, or was Heath Ledger's Joker one of the facial customizations?

I played the beta for a while.  My only qualm was that it's a huuuuuge grind.  And levels mean everything.  Yes, it is twitch based.  But a lvl 40 has so much better equipment than a lvl 30 and you won't be competitive with anyone more than a few levels above you.  And the level cap is somewhere around 100, meaning you're going to be running a bunch of the same missions over and over again for a long time.  That being said, the actual combat is pretty entertaining.  So if you don't mind the grind, check it out.

I'm in the beta right now and, like the above poster mentioned, if they get the bugs fixed this could be a great game.  I share the same criticisms about the MMO part of it, but they haven't enabled PvP yet in the beta so I can't really comment accurately, that's planned for late May.  How the PvP is handled will make or break it.  The online kingdom is very cool and the game is definitely worth checking out just for that.  There are plans to add larger guild vs. guild PvP functions which may be more involved than the current PvP plans and address the concerns echoed by the above poster.

I would sum it up like this:  It's a RTS with a persistant homecity that you get to build from the ground up.  You can be attacked at any time (provided you weren't attacked recently as they do have a timer to prevent griefing) and can attack others in your region at any time.  Allies can join in.  You do have to travel with your army if you want to attack players in a different region.  The actual gameplay is very well done and makes for very entertaining battles where having a good strategy or tactical mind really does pay off.  Units can level up through combat experience and gain skill.  There's some very cool mechanics built in to this game, let me give you an example of a battle I've had:

My homecity is attacked by an NPC (they do attack you at times).  They've got me outnumbered, but I've made some provisions.  I've (manually, not just clicking a button) laid some oil slick on the field just outside of my city walls.  Using the 2 minute warning you get before the enemy troops arrive, I station my infantry inside my walls and my archers on top.  I toggle my tower mounted trebuchets to fire at will and set them as well as my archers to use flaming arrows/rocks.  I split my cavalry into two groups and position them on the farthest ends of the map on either side.

The enemy arrives and my trebuchets immediately begin bombarding them as they advance.  As they near my walls, some of the flaming arrows from my archers cause the oil slick to catch fire.  A flash fire starts which actually lights the nearby fields and farming areas on fire taking out a large chunk of their infantry and splitting their forces in half.  I order my cavalry on both sides to charge the far group while my archers continue to rain down fire on the near group.  A few of their ladders reach my walls, so I toggle the boiling oil pots and rock droppers (defensive fortifications) which douse them in oil and drop large boulders onto the area near my gates.  Right about this time, my cavalry swarms their far group trampling through the disorganized infantry and cutting a large path through them with trample damage, meeting eachother in the middle.  In conjunction, I open my gates and send my infantry charging out to engage the near group which has no where left to run thanks to the now large fire still burning behind them.  Send the villagers out and loot the bodies.

That's just one example.  The game has its shortcomings (more interaction/visible interaction between players would be ideal), but the dynamic gameplay is entertaining enough to make it worth checking out at the least in my opinion if you're a fan of RTS games.

When LotrO released the Rune Keeper, they basically ruined the whole Lord Of The Rings feel of the game by adding a class that shoots lightning bolts out of its fingers ala Emperor Palpatine.  So no, in my experience I generally don't like it when a new class is added.  Although with a little more thought and some better decisions, new classes aren't always bad.
