Maybe Turbine should add 10 foot swords and 12 foot wide shoulder pads. Then make all the character grotesquely out of proportion to the point of being cartoony. Then they could re-skin all the characters with flashy colors so they look like a bunch of clowns on steroids just the way Tolkien would have wanted it.

I appreciate your input. This has really opened my eyes to the error my post . In future I will take your post to heart before I request any information on a MMO.

Unfortunately I will no be able to avail myself to your future pearls of wisdom because I am fucking blocking you.

I don't want you to make up my mind for me but I would like some information.

I posted in the LFG forum and while I appreciate the 2 response I got. Well I only got to response for games that are still in development.

I am looking for a game that doesn't require much button mashing and moving around during combat especially PvP. What I have seen of the combat I like but how do it work in grouping and raiding with many characters on the screen? Also I would like an MMO that is not gearcentric.

I have started the free trial and really haven't done much so far because of work but what little I have looks good but I was wondering about further up the line what the game is like.

I tried Ryzom and think it is a great game but I am an old grognard and really couldn't get into the world or story. I prefer the more medieval look and feel, a more traditional fantasy. I suppose you would be hard pressed to find a more traditional world then LotR. That being said how does the crafting and gear situation compare to Ryzom? Can you mosey thru the game smelling the roses or do you have to race in order to compete with other players?

Thank you for any info.

Thanx I will MotG up.

Well I played the WAR OB and have played other MMos and I just can't keep up. I would like to try PVP but I had my ass handed to me in WAR on several occasions. I just can't hit the right key at the right time while moving and leaping.

I don't know if I am just getting old or if MMOs are now populated by 3 armed mutants but it is really getting me down.

This isn't just in PVP. PVE also. once my group starts wading in I lose track of my target and start getting slow as I start hitting the ~ or tab key instead of the 1 key. Most everything is dead before I can even get my sword out of the sheath if you know what I mean.

Is there a good MMO that isn't based on button mashing or one that has a slower less complex combat? Maybe one where you have to think more than use your hands. Hell, I know games advance but what ever happened to pushing "a" to attack and the monitoring you stats and group to make sure it was going your sides way?

And don't get me started on gear. When did it get so hard on keeping up with what is the best gear and why can't I kill that guy with this sword that has done me so well.

I really enjoyed WoW until I found out it was so gearcentric that I was 5 levels behind with gear I just looted or quested for.

Can anyone help me out?

okay so i took a peek at the Most voted games at the frontpage and saw 2 games - Shadow of Legend and Godswar Online with high ratings, i took a look at the hyping there.. needless to say many ppl already saw the false hyping at Shadow of Legend but also at Godswar Online when u look at the last 10 ppl with comments (excluding me) they all have created accounts since 12 march 2008 and have a post count of 0, 1 or hell maybe even a staggering 2 posts at these boards.

i would suggest to remove hyping, not completely, but just block it at certain games (if this is possible) where companies/fanboys create high hypes to attract some players, its just sad and unwanted

I have seen what you are saying, but I don't think you can block hyping on certain games becasue then you get into a judgement call which might hurt the innocent. Let say a game is coming out and someone posts that every one who is looking forward to that game should come to MMORPG, create a login and hype it. Is there really anything wrong with that?

What MMORPG should do is raise how many post you have before you can hype and also look a little closer for people that create multiple logins. Hell in order to hype or review you must have a rating of 100, I think it is 100,  and you get your rating up just by being logged into the site so it isn't hard to get to where you can leave a hype.

So is the reason people don't just dislike a game but hate and want it to fail is because of the frustration over the poor state of the industry? How will a game failing make the situation better? Instead won't a game failing  put it into the heads of devs "better not do what they did, just make a copy of WoW to be safe"?

I have been reading a number of threads on this site and I am amazed by the number of people that posted that not only will they not play game 'X', they want to see game 'X' fail, the servers closed and the devs run out of town on a rail. Why have people who don't like a game taken it to the next level? Why do they want to see the game removed from the world?

I can understand why SWG and UO vets are disgruntled, the game changed into something very different and all the time and effort you put into it was shot to hell.

But what about other games? Some newer games have had abysmal launches, and I can see why people would be reluctant to return to them. I can also understand why these people would have nothing nice to say about a game they paid for that did not follow thru on the hype. But what is behind the desire to have it totally shut down even though others may like playing it? You played a game for a few months maybe a year, it didn't live of to your expectations so now you want it closed down?

I just don't understand.

This article is just a voice for casual clearly the guy is not a fan of hardcore and want to shut us up becouse his narrowminded view tell us hardcore are 14year old screaming bastards who shout nonsens.

And he dont want that becouse then he and his fellow casuals/carebears have a hardtime playing, but i dont understand his concerns almost all games today are easy casual and carebear.

There is that term "Care bear" again. I find the term somewhat insulting so I am going to start refering to PVP fans as GPers. Now I know what GP stands for so I won't spell it out here so this post won't get deleted. Now I consider my self a "Hardcore" gamer because I play many different games and I play every chance I get. If your definition of "hardcore" is only people that are GPers and not "care bears" , because they only play one game and only every now and again and throw flower petals at each other when they are playing then you are sadly mistaken.

Yes you should play WoW. The game is fun, as has been stated it is not perfect but the only way you will know if it is your cup of tea is to play. The 14 day free trial has been suggested and unlike some games if you play pretty regular you will now just about all there is on how the game owrks and will probably have seen enough to know whether you want to continue. WoW is a simple game to start and the learning curve is low. Also, if some ass pisses you off, just ignore that, some segments of the community are less than desirable. I usually shut off the general chats when I enter a new area.

WHY GOD WHY!?!?

Yes, constant "this sucks"-whining should be ignored.
Yes, good thought on current mechanics should be digested, and here i disagree with the author. If a suggestion from a user is well thought and fits into the game, then why not? There are many things in Eve-Online for example the community suggested. Jumpfreighters, Electronic Warfare Frigates. Even the Triage-Module for Carriers, Jumpbridges..many, many ideas came from the community. Why discard that? There is nothing wrong with discussing additions and changes when you as a developer still preserve a vision for your own game, follow it - and discard suggestions that do not fit in.

I agree with the article but Bato makes a good point. Devs need to separate the screaming and yelling from the calm voices of reason. When the unwashed masses cry for more PVP 14 days before launch, devs should not be so quick to delay and then drop in some half baked PVP model that satisfies no one.

I think what this thread boils down to is that immersion, whether it is in a game or not, is what you make of it. A game that is totally immersive for one person maybe very shallow to another, you find your own immersion and if you can't you move on to something else. Sometimes it works for you and sometimes it don't.

TBH the graphics do look a little dated when compared with crysis and other top end games

Crysis is a FPS.. And Darkfall graphics look on par with MMORPG's released 6-7 years ago. Even AC2 which was released 6 years ago has much better graphics and animations.

we know that graphics don't mean anything compared to gameplay, and if darkfall produces what they say it will produce, then we'll all know why.

Ya but you know what?  Asheron's Call 1 has some of the best gameplay of a MMORPG but I don't play it. Want to know why? Because it has shit graphics.

Great graphics SELL THE GAME. Good gameplay keeps people playing.  You need both working together. No one is going to play a shitty looking game because it boasts good gameplay. They will look at the visuals first then end up assuming the gameplay is shit too because the graphics look so amateur and outdated.

Animations matter a whole lot too. If you have bad animations it ruins the gameplay experience. And DF's animations don't look like anything to write home about...

The arguement about graphics will go on and on. The thing is I think people for whom graphics are important assume that when someone says "graphics aren't important" that they would play a game with stick figures if the game had great game play. On the other hand when some one say that "graphics are important to them" for those who graphics aren't that important they assume that the person is shallow and not intrested in game play. To what degree graphics matter is personal taste. Everyone wants a good game and everyone wants it to look good. So in a way the arguement is moot. Saying one view point is better than another is useless.

Recently- I am seeing less immersion in MMO's. Travel times are cut in half by loading screens. Players complain about quest times taking to long. Players seem to be wanting more for less time involved. There seems to be "I want it now" mentality in MMO's these days.  I find this a process that will only hinder new ideas for virtual worlds. Has anyone else noticed this trend over the last 4 years?

I have noticed that it is incredibly boring to travel the same 20 minute road 100s of times.

When I get home from my 20-40 minute commute home from work, the last think I want to do is commute in an MMO.

So a lot of these factors you talk about are "improvements".

Dangerous travel is not boring.  The cross-Antonica trek in EQ1 was scary (especially High Pass and Kithicor).

The problem with these new MMORPG's is nothing is really scary, not even the dungeons.  Therefore, everything is trivial.  And boring.

I think this hits the nail on the head. There is no fear or really anyother emotion in MMOs. I agree the first time I started playing EQ and had to go anywhere my heart would pound my legs would go weak when something latched on to me. When I got where I was going I was so releaved, I felt that I had accomplished something. I suppose this is what I want in immersion feeling like I have worked hard to accomplish something, being scared. If all you have to do is click on an NPC or item and bam you are 200 miles away with no risk, if the death penalty is little more than 5 minutes of rez sickness, then it is more like a job, I log in, join the leveling race and then logout.  I play WoW now because you have to run some and my friends are there but I would like something more challenging.

Really would anyone play a game that once you logged in you were in a buildingless city where all the NPCs were lined up in front of you, you click on a quest giver and are teleported to a one room dungeon, where mob after mob spawns with a rest time between each mob, until the boss spawns. Once you kill the boss you recall back to the city and hit the next quest giver. No travel, no thinking, all right there.

Use google next time you lazy bum!

The requirements aren't completely accurate though. I tried it on a FX 5200 and it didn't work. I was getting less than one frame per second.

AoC will be DX9 or DX10.

Yeah, I know I am a lazy bum.... Thanx for posting them tho!

Looks like I wont have to get a new machine after all which is good.

I have V:SoH until the 20th and while I was impressed with the overall performance improvements the game still does seem unpolished. Is SOE working to just getting the game playable or are they also working towards tightening up the over all feel of the game? Sometimes it feel like an old F2P MMO as far as the way graphics interact. You see NPCs fighting each other at the beginning of one newbie zone and they are basically standin "in" each other. The fire also in the burning buldings in that zone causes no damage when you run thru it, whats up with that? I really want V:SoH to recover from its bad launch but is SOE working on the little details as well as the big picture?

If you really think about it Blizzard is in a perfect position to evolve WoW along with the community. If the community gets tired of gear whoring and wanted to move on to more of something else, Blizzard could easily transition the game towards that. Unlike many MMOs WoW is malleable enough to put in those changes, for better or worse.

I would rather it have less than cutting edge graphics and still do everything they say they are. I don't need to see the pores on people skin to enjoy the game.

I am really looking forward to this game. Warhammer does not intrest me for various reasons, but AoC really sounds great. I will wait until shortly after launch to buy, see what the response is. The game would have to be pretty unplayable like V:SoH for me not to get into it at least to try it out.

Can someone post the sys req for Oblivion or a link to them?

And what is this about direct X 10?
