No, everyone starts in Korthos village. Then you move onto the Harbour.

Not true: http://www.riftgame.com/en/products/return-to-telara/index.php?utm_campaign=return_to_telara_3_0112&utm_medium=email&utm_source=email_en&utm_content=learn_more_button

That right there is the mention. An entire page devoted to it, in fact.

Yes, same info as in the email. Where's the link to that page though? You'd think it would be one of the news stories on the front page. It's like they're hiding it or something.

You don't think it's anything as idiotic as they got their dates wrong do you? It's a free weekend offer that supposedly starts on a Thursday. Maybe it's actually tomorrow. Or maybe they just don't know when it's starting themselves!

Has anyone tried with a new account? Wondering if it's just accounts with previous subscriptions that aren't allowed access atm.

When does the free period start, anyone know?

Doesn't seem like it. There's a discussion on another forum about this, people wondering why they can't log in yet. Mdday here now and still no access. They really should have been more specific if it starts at some arbitrary  time during the day.

WoW has been by far the most popular MMO for years but it's never been anywhere near the most popular on here. That's because it has so many haters who rate it 1. Suspect SWOTOR, being a big, hyped game, also has its haters. I suspect people vote 1 without even having played it. I'm no fanboy btw, not tried SWOTOR and have no intention of doing so. It was probably no 1 because fanboys put it there overrating it. Now there's a backlash by haters. It's like the metacritic user ratings. Totally skewed by fanboys and haters.

It's 01:22 am CET and it says I'm not entitled to play the game (account already created and login accepted) on a European server. So it's not starting at 00:00 CET but at 00:00 USA east coast?

Well, it's after 10 in the morning now in the UK and I'm still not entitled to play. So it didn't start at 00:00 east coast time either. Not in the UK anyway.

I think statements like this thread's title makes people sound like old farts.  "Will music come back to the glory days of the 60s"  "Movies aren't the same anymore as they were in the past".

The thing is, any art form changes with time.  As people change, so do anything that they create and consume.  Games won't stay in the state that they are now forever.  They will change.  But asking for them to return to an old style is silly.  They will change in ways that we can't predict.

You want to keep playing games?  You have to adapt to how they are or move on.  Same with music, movies or anything else.  Either that or you can keep listening to that elvis vinyl over and over again.  I'm not saying that listening to old music or playing old games is bad.  I'm just saying it's unreasonable to want current media to adopt those old styles.

There are still artists creating music and movies of every genre out there. Even new classical-style music is being composed everyday. It may not be mainstream, but it exists. Therein lies the difference with MMOs. Those old-style games no longer exist. At least not in a recognizable capacity. There's certainly a place for the easy-mode theme park MMOs that seem to be popular today, but when thats the ONLY thing being made, its a valid complaint that something different needs to come along.

Your statement doesn't make much sense.  Yes new classical music is being composed, but it is not the same as classical music from the 18th century.  New music is completely different than Beethoven, Bach etc.  People who compose in exactly the same style as Beethoven don't get much attention.  It's been done before and why would you listen to some 3rd rate composer compose something in old styles when you can just listen to the masters.  And I'm not saying this new music is mainstream, it's not, but it certain does not ressemble older styles of classical music, even if people still call it "classical music"

Music has moved on, and is always changing.  So are games.

leojmreimroc is correct in everything he says. The problem also is that things from the past are never remembered as they actually were. All the flaws are forgotten. The contemporary is always viewed critically, however. And it seems to be just human nature to think everything is going to pot. People have thought this way since they thought at all.

I wonder how many servers will be left after GW2 release...

Pretty much think the age of MMOs is over. I throughly enjoy Co-op now more than I do my MMOs. There's just something to be said about sitting down with friends and blugeoning the crap outta things :D

So because you enjoy co-op play over MMOs the whole genre is finished? Like to make any more global predictions based on your likes and dislikes?

I've just had a couple of days of free play. It ended last night. You mean I have another three days free coming up end of the week?!

Can someone explain to me something about HoN and LoL? I've looked at the websites but I'm still unclear. Is there any kind of character development in these games? Or do you start from scratch in every match? Is there any ongoing progress or aims?

LoL has an out game skill tree for character development.

HoN does not and neither will Dota/Dota 2.

Both however have currency that you can earn to buy cosmetic items in the shops.

Hope that helps. :)

Yes, thanks. I see that on Steam they boast that RoI is the first MOBA game to have persistent character progression. Is that an option or not considered as good as HoN and LoL. Not sure I'd be interested in a game without character progression of some sort.

P2P has never suited me. I tend to dip in and out of games, rarely playing one for more than a couple of weeks at a time. Then I leave it alone for a few months. F2P means I can dip in and out of various games as I like.

Never played the first Neverwinter game, but I bought NWN2 in the summer sale on Steam. I tried a couple of the persistent worlds. In the first, immediately on entering I got someone telling me I'd picked the wrong class. In the second I got someone wittering on at me about not using WASD among other things. This, coupled with performance issues, caused me to give up.

Its the survival element my friend. Its the "post-apocalyptic" element. The zombies just add in some spice, you can't necessarily create an awesome action filled post-apocalyptic game where the apocalypse was caused by illness.

Now I'll agree, Left 4 Dead, games like that bore me. I can't stand shooting zombies for hours on end with 3 other people, I mean come on.

Now if I can join a part with 8-10 other people and even more on a regular basis and do that, ALONG with the challenge of surviving, water, food, maybe even hygiene, ect, then it makes it a lot more fun.

Absolutely. I wish there were an MMO or RPG like that. Zombie games always seem to go for the arcade shooting fest. The interesting part of zombie fiction is the survival aspect. Whether it's making a home in a shopping mall and looting it or living in a prison and securing the perimeter.

From youtube clips it looks like Dead Island mainly involves shooting zombie after zombie with a bit of skill point allocation.

I'm in the process of playing the first Drakensang game but a bit bogged down in the town doing the murders quests. Does it pick up soon? I was enjoying the atmosphere initially

anyone else find it humerous that wow has lost more subs in the last year then every other AAA mmo on the market has total added up?  /snicker

I think it's humourous that people on here should try to make such a big deal out of it. It's truly desperate.

threads like this just reinforce how WoW dominates western MMOs. Supposedly big MMOs liked LotRO only ever had 300k users! the fact it's still top dog, numerous times over, is a bigger story than that it losers some players.

i think more than EQ2

I doubt this, although I suppose EQ did have a lot more players initially. EQ2 never had more than 300k and it's retained players fairly well, still having around 200k.
