It is no AoC, TERA, or GW2 graphically nor was it meant to be. It falls comfrotable in between AoC and Aion in terms of graphics of games that are released. Vangaurd fans don't even go there. I played that extensively as well, sure it has some nice graphics and such, but it does not compare.

+1

Agree, Rift with all of the settings maxed out (as well as forcing texture fixing and the other high quality settings in the gfx card control panel) is between AoC and Aion, closer to AoC than Aion (Aion has some very poor stretched world texturing).

Its one of the top most beautiful mmorpg worlds, with all of the polish and details games like Vanguard are still lacking after years. They also did the texturing right, avoiding the plastic look you see in EQ2 or Vanguard.

As far as I'm concerned Rift is currently number 2 right behind AoC.

I hope you are letting Trion know on the Rift forums. They need this kind of feedback.

The sounds are good to me. Not exceptional, but still quite good.

And I am usually very difficult regarding gaming audio as I am playing on a headphone audiophile reference setup (PC digital out to a $1'500 balanced DAC -> out to a $1'500 balanced headphone amp -> out on a pair of balanced Sennheiser HD 650 headphones). That's almost 3'500 bucks just to get some proper sound on headphones, and this setup requires some very good source audio otherwise it just sounds bad as you can hear all of the details, especially the bad ones you usually can't hear on a cheap low end setup. But I have none of the problems you are having.

That said, I am playing a rogue, so I have never heard a stick. But everything else including fully spacialized 5.1 sound and music is some of the best I have heard in mmos.

AoC ok, but Everquest 2 and Wow? is this post a joke? I guess some people will complain about anything.

Update your gfx card mate and pump the graphics up.

Here on max settings with an nvidia gtx470 the characters look as good and as detailed as AoC and Aion (perhaps between AoC and Aion). But certainly better than EQ2 and years ahead of Fisher-Price Wow, Lotro and Co.

WHAT DOES IT BRING NEW??

A POLISHED/FINISHED GAME AT RELEASE!!!

That is surely new....

NO MMO is ever finished...

Of course, but what he is saying is that compared to other games that have been live for several years like Darkfall or Vanguard, Rift is only in beta and it's development and polish is already years ahead.

For once (at least since Lotro, was this the only other mmo?) we have a game that will launch in a release ready state.

Nice!

Thanks for the post Lobo, I would have missed it otherwise

What does this mean? there is no light at the end of the long long tunnel.

Sounds like every other mmo to me.

The difference is that Darkfall is one of the rare games like Lineage 2 or EVE where at the end of the tunnel you still exist in the world with player/clan politics and territorial control.

95% of the other mmos are just a quest and character development grind and there's no politics and no world to exist in.

Op, you might not like the game but I don't think you understand what the game was about.

It was about player interaction, controlling resources, cland solidarity or lack thereof, economic mastery.

The "grinding" was the mecahnic that allowed all that to happen.

It's the only game I've ever played where it felt like a world. A world with villains, heroes, good guys, bad guys and battles that felt like they mattered.

edit: and you keep talking about quests. Not a questing game. It's about one alliance closing down cruma tower and having to be forced out by players. It's about your alliance members being PK'ed in Tower of insolence so you gather our alliance to march to the top to destory the offenders. It's about your alliance gathering together to destroy the raid of another alliance only to find out as you rise over the ridge that they have a HUGE army formed and you get obliterated.

It's about the infamous players who would hold dion hostage, fighting gold farmers for raids, helping new players as they were often scammed, knowing the market place and using it to your advantage.

Quests?

No one did quests, at least not after you got out of the new players zone. You are entitled to your opinion but you don't really talk about what the game was actually about.

I agree, L2 is one of the best games I have played.

I have played many, and am currently playing Lotro and Darkfall, but my best gaming memories come from L2.

This game is a rare gem.

The EU client is the same price:

Nice deal

Glad the art is good, they keep updating it while leaving the rest of the game broken   Fix the bugs, duping, exploits, etc and stop working on the graphics.  They need to get their priorities straight and get a manager that knows what is important and get rid of henrik

Sure, while the coders are fixing bugs the art team shouldn't be doing anything.

I want to be ambushed by 2 guys and win the game due to MY skills, not my character skills.

Then you are playing the wrong game.

Because character progression is at the core of RPG games (DF is an mmoRPG). If you want to remove the character progression , FPS games is what you are looking for.

Not remove it, change it - it can be done and its been done.

I already play FPS games, I want to play MMORPG games with FFA PvP and full loot. If I wanted to play FPS id play Planetside. They have progression there even without PvE. Imagine what DF can have if they fix their PvP mechanics. hundreds of thousands of people!

Ok, but what you are proposing is not the solution.

You are complaining because other players are stronger than you because of character progression, and you want to win thanks to your own skills.

With this you are only adding a greater injustice to the game. Because some players, even if they play 24/24 will always be less skilled than the others. They will never have a chance to catch up.

At least with DF everyone one has a chance to compete (even if less skilled or disabled IRL). Everyone can work on their character. Of course it's not perfect, but neither is a game based on player skill. DF is both.

As a noob, im being forced to do something that I do not want to do and I have very little chance of resisting it.
Thats not sandbox from my point of view.

Sounds like real life to me..... IRL you are forced to do things you don't want all the time (forced to go to school, forced to work, forced to pay taxes, etc... ) with "very little chance of resisting it.

RL being the greatest  sandbox of all, your point doesn't hold much water...

You are not forced to do any of that. You make your own choices. You think you are forced to do it because you think "better education=better future". Its true to a point, but not a fact. Even the law, you arent forced to obey it - but you will suffer the consequences. DF is more anarchic then real life because the consequences are.. practically non existant. What consequences you get for farming noobs? You get better standings so you can gank more of your own people. Maybe you get ganked by some guy who protects noobs and lose your gear - thats not as bad as a noob losing their gear. There are practically no consequences for being mean in DF. I'm not talking about hacking, just using standard DF mechanics for bad behaviour - noob killing, noob farming, kill stealing, corpse stealing, mount stealing, etc etc. Vets lose little, noobs lose a lot.

Nope, IRL you are forced, with "very little chance of resisting it", as you said.

You can refuse to go to school and refuse to work, but then you won't have much of a life. Just like in Darkfall.

But in DF there is more freedom than in the real world. Because IRL, if you gank noobs you can't play the game anymore (either you abide by the rules or you get killed or you go to jail); this isn't much of a choice is it?.

So looking at it this way, DF is more of a sandbox than real life.... it's just that compared to RL, DF is still laking many of the tools to play in the box.

If I fight in PvP where we are equals or even if not but I had the choice to retreat, but didn't take that choice - that is fine by me.

Again, you are contradicting yourself.

If everyone would be equal it would not be a sandbox.

If I fight in PvP and I am not equal and i had no choice, no way of escaping then that is not fine by me.

You want a game with your own rules: everyone must be equal. This is not a sandbox.

In a sandbox all players are different. Some will be stronger than you, and some weaker. Just like in real life.

As IRL, you have the choice to improve yourself to catch up to the stronger ones -> in this way you are equal.

In the 2nd scenario, no matter how often I bank - one person enforces their behavior upon another without the other person able to resist intelligently. Its like kicking someone when they are down and unresponcive. I cannot break this down into simpler terms. Its an issue of the concept of unfair competition. Banking often is just a damage control to prevent some loss (items/regs/mats), but it will not eliminate the unfair advantage one person has over another.

No. Of course you can play intelligently.

An intelligent player will adapt to the situation. For example, by teaming up with other players or getting into a clan. Or moving to an area policed and protected by other stronger players, etc.... just like in real life.

As for "unfair advantage one person has over another", again it's just like in real life, the greatest sandbox of all.

No news regarding the environmental sounds which where suposed to be patched in "shortly after the June 2010 expansion"?

Yeah this topic has grown into something stupid.

If it took them (was it 10 years?) to create darkfall, and AV has like 12 employees....and it takes over 6 months to get a small patch towards the yet-to-fully-release expansion.....how long would it take for them to make a new game?

We will all be too busy on our hoverboards and playing volleyball on the moon to care about video games by then.

It took AV 6 years to make Darkfall, and they had 30 employees, they have at least 12 more now(developers, they have many more Q&A and GMs, but they don't count).

And it took 6 months to release an expansion, not a patch. Since the expansion a week or so ago, there have been two more patches. Sooo... check your facts.

Where are you taking this number from?

1 or 2 weeks ago one of the community liaisons (which are part of the AV staff) posted in one of the threads on the official forums that AV currently has 30 employees.

If you remove customer service and other staff, this shouldn't leave more than 20 developpers.

And it took 7 years to make the game (some even say 8). I have never head of 6 years before.

Also, we had no game update for the last 10 months, not 6...

First, during development, Darkfall had about 30 devs. Since release they hired a few more people. Once they moved into their new office building, they hired more people.

The game was in development by Aventurine from Summer 2003 and entered openish beta around December 2008.

And no, the game has had several patches between the Expansions you seem to be forgetting. Some important enough as adding in strong boxes and the portal shard system.

I.

2 weeks ago, October 6th, 2010: "The team consists of around 30 people all in all."

http://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?p=4545845#post4545845

II.

It took 7 to 8 years to make Darkfall, not 6.

Darkfall developpment was announced on 29 August 2001 by Razorwax. In October 2002 a new company, Aventurine, was formed and Razorwax was integrated into it.

Darkfall was released on February 26, 2009.

III.

And again, last expansion was in December 2009, so it took 10 months for this exp. Not 6 as you said. But yes, the strongboxes and portals where nice additions nevertheless.

Yes, you will hurt your friends if you aren't careful.

There is no friendly fire toggle.

Likewise, when a mob shoots at you, it will also damage other mobs if they are in the line of sight (or if the mob shoots magic nukes, other mobs will also get hurt).

From my understanding the details are not exactly known becuase this expansion represents a series of expansions that overall represent a list of changes they have talked about.

That said what we know for sure is the following:

1. extensive addition to the dungeon system

2. new terrian graphic updates.

3. treasure hunts

4. at min. a few more mobs.

Other players might have watched it all closer than I have and can verify specific such as new crafting is for this specific expansion I just dont know. that said much more crafting and 'class like' specialities will be added eventually if not this expansion specifically.

I usually dont watch the news as close as other do so hopefully someone will post better info for you.

5. New mount for mahirims

6. New faster mount for every race.

7. New housing spots in existing villages.

8. New villages.

9. New ship.

10. Bugfixes for old bugs.

Geeez aren't you guys following the game anymore? How could anyone forget the most important improvement of all.....

11. FUNHULKS!

12. and the new "use flags" system (see above link for details).
