Although it wouldn't matter for me as I am, by far, the slowest leveler in the history of everything, I can see why some people might be upset after paying an extra fiver.  Other games have capped the levels, but I don't think they charged you for the pleasure.

I have a GeForce 7800 GT, 2 GB RAM, and an AMD Anthlon 64 3200+ processor.  On the medium settings that were default it ran okay but sluggish.  I switched to low and it runs much better, though there are still laggy areas and some minor graphic stalls.  It doesn't look awful on the low setting, either, so I'm okay with it.

I'm not going to upgrade anything until this computer is drawing it's last breath.  I'm getting stroppy about games telling me what to do with my computer!    In any case, this game needs a lot of spit and polish.  Maybe by  that time (I have a feeling it won't be by the launch date, either)  I'll have something nicer.  Not fussed about it at the moment.  Anyway,  ,my husband is putting together a fancy shmancy PC for our main television this summer and I'm more excited about that than by ANY of the MMOs coming out this year.

BETA is the keyword to look at for all you "jump to conclusion no time to let the game mature kthxbai going to WAR" kids. I bet WAR will have the near same reaction of people saying "OH ITS GOING TO SUCK BECAUSE ITS BETA AND THE FULL RELEASE WILL BE EXACTLY THE SAME!"

Beta and full release might not be EXACTLY the same, but I bet they'll be close.  Even MMO history repeats itself.

There's a nice game in there somewhere but after playing the FP open beta and keeping in mind that this game is released in under three weeks, I expect launch to be an epic fail.  The cries of "it's beta!"  and "there's a debugger"  just don't hold water at this point.  Well, they never really do, but there you go.  If you hold your breath for a miracle patch, prepare to die because they just don't happen this close to release.

People with decent gaming machines are reporting stalling graphics,  tedious loading times, lag... flashback to AO.   There are HUGE memory leaks which Funcom seems to be blaming on the debugger, too, but I'll bet real money they're still there at release and are still the size of the Grand Canyon.   They can spin it all they like, as usual, but launch day will tell the truth.

I still want the pretty box, but I have a feeling it'll be sitting on the shelf for several months while this game cooks.  When it's done, I think I'll like it.  I may actually turn off gore though, because it's almost silly in it's extreme.  I don't need that to enjoy a game.  I wish they had been a bit more realistic.  I haven't seen nipples yet because I think they have them turned off.  I did hear, however, that they need fixing because they poke through your clothing.   How awesome is that?  It made me laugh!  I'm also not crazy about the early level clothing and a lot of the hair styles and body markings.  That stuff is really trivial, though.  Please bake this game more!

PS  I won't be unhappy if I'm completely and utterly wrong and the miracle fairy patches the hell out of it!

:)

I don't think Funcom even has an office in the UK so I'm not sure why they'd mean BST.

I'm also a big FF fan but didn't like FF11 after the first several levels.  MMORPGs which have no solo play, are doomed today, at least in the US and Europe.  Their server populations sort of prove it.  People who are pressed for time, want to play for short stints of an hour or so, are just plain out of luck with games like these.  There is also a very large and growing population of people who just plain enjoy solo, duo and/or small group play.  I know that kind of pisses some very vocal people off, but what can you?  It seems to be what most people want.

Yes, but Spain is lovely so you still win!

My husband and I are in the US for right now but we live in Britain.  Even with BST and the loopier DST (which they keep changing the date for), it takes me a second to look it up.  Maybe Funcom doesn't have internet?   Even though I was just teasing, it's still kind of sloppy.  The US should just give up and declare daylight savings time to be in effect all year.   It gets longer and longer every year, anyway.   Or get rid of it.  Either way is fine!

How reassuring that Funcom can't tell time.  Oh dear!  Hopefully they're better at other stuff.  Even if they have a stellar open beta launch, we can always throw time in their face if they piss us off.

I think I'm lucky in a way.  I have no preconceived expectations for this game.  I never read the books, comics and the one Conan film I saw, I didn't like.  I can't help thinking that if you loved all the stuff associated with Conan, it'll be easier to disappoint.  I haven't done anything but pick up an open beta key from Fileplanet to which I was already subscribed.  Hopefully, my lack of preparation will pay off!

you have a beta key and your writing on a topic about an mmo and you have no preconceived expectations..  think you need to re think then re word lol...  no ofense

Hehe... fair enough.  I meant that I have no preconceived expectations as far as lore is concerned.  I don't know the lore so I'll be seeing whatever there is of it for the first time in the game.  Of course, after a bajillion years of playing MMOs, MUDs, and the like, I have reasonable expectations as far as gameplay, content, mechanics, etc. is concerned.

And thanks for nice words, Pixeldogmeat.  (what a name!! )

They've stopped bothering with batches so it's open all the time.  I would say that at this point in time, if you subscribe, you're in.  I guess most of the people who wanted to get into the beta enough to pay for a Fileplanet subscription have got theirs.

Thank you very much,

Do you mean you want to get in the beta test, selma?  I'm not sure there is a way at this point other than subscribing to Fileplanet or buying one of those ebay accounts, which is very dodgy.  If you know someone who preordered, they get buddy keys which I assume will be like a free trial once the game is released.

You know, if you have Comcast broadband, you might not have to pay at all.  I remember that you get a free Fileplanet/Founder's Club/etc... account included.  We've had an FP account for years so I never bothered, but I remember seeing the promotion not so long ago.

Well, this far along in the AoC beta, with release just around the corner, they're probably not as interested in the actual testing of much besides their server loads.  They just want bodies in their doing stuff to weigh them down.

As for being a small group of dedicated testers and not people who just want a free look... meh.  They'll get a mix of both and get the data they need.  They always start with in-house testing and add as they go along.  I'm sure they to keep the numbers under control for what they need done.   Picking random testers when they start needing a lot of people seems to have always done the trick.  It's only in the early stages they might choose people manually... after that, it's probably automatic.

A lot of people like to think they'd be a better tester than the average punter off the street who's just looking for a game to play, but chances are, you'll both play a part.  They'll be people playing and data collected.  Some will look for  bugs and some will just stumble over them.   A lot won't even bother making reports, but they'll still add to the telemetry and feedback.
