The Battle.Net RealID Poll & Discussion.
General Discussion « World of Warcraft 7/09/10 12:43:05 PM
I think Blizzard must be a wee tiny bit concerned about the reaction. My husband canceled last night and Blizzard Customer Service called this morning. Once at 8:04 AM, which I didn't answer because Caller ID showed it was from "Unavailable" and again at 8:42 AM, which I answered because the screen read "International". (our families are in Europe) I took the name and number from a Mrs. Howell (yes, her first name seems to be Mrs.) for my husband although he doesn't seem to be inclined to call her back. She had an American accent. In any case, he did mention when he canceled that it was due to his concern with privacy. I was going to resub for the new expansion but won't unless they change their policy. I'm a little bothered about the Facebook association, too. |

Moderating this forum would deny us all this personal love! No one wants that. |

NHS Dental care may be freely available in the UK, but it's not free. You do have to pay but nothing like you do for private dentists. Complicated dental work might be rather pricey, too. And it's not everywhere. Freely available although you might have to travel rather far to find an NHS dentist in some areas. There might be a long waiting list for anything other than simple cleanings and procedures. They reformed all this in 2006 and you would have thought conditions would be better, but they aren't. Now, the way the NHS dental contracts are written, a dentist gets the same money to extract teeth as to do a root canal or other more complex, invasive procedures. Some dentists won't do root canals, they tell you to either have it pulled (even though they could save it!) or go private. This is a big political issue with promises from every party these days. Still, if you look at people under 30 or so, for the most part, there's a vast improvement in the condition of their teeth.
There's also not such a rush to fix a crooked tooth as there is in the US. It's okay not to have abnormally white teeth, too. I think some people confuse not perfectly white or straight teeth with unhealthy teeth. Healthy teeth have varying degrees of "whiteness". (some American's get their teeth bleached so white, it's scary looking) It's not rare for American parents to set aside a savings to account for their children's braces before the kids even have teeth. Teeth seem to be an obsession here, but at least it's an obsession that leans towards something mostly healthy. Having said that, the state of British teeth is generally still much worse than in the US. There's probably more Prozac in British tap water than Flouride, which might explain why people aren't as fussed about their teeth in the UK. :p
Regardless of whether my husband and I live in the US or in Britain, we get anything other than cleanings done in the US, even though we go private in the UK for dental. The dentists are just generally better here and all the cool new cutting edge tools are more common. One thing that's always frustrated and confused me is why dental isn't considered as medical for insurance purposes. Having bad dental health can absolutely make you ill. Edit - I don't understand why this is in politics! |

No moderation at all, of any sort. Untill it's possible to punch someone through the internet, fend for yourselves. As nasty as some people can be to each other, it's obvious they mostly enjoy the freedom to verbally argue and take virtual jabs at each other. Why ruin the fun? Also, I really can't imagine the site would agree with any sort of moderation. It would be insane on their end. I hear people whinge about moderation all the time, so why invite it into a forum where you have the freedom to say what you like with impunity? I don't consider cleaning up advert spam and the like to be the sort of moderation the poll covers. If it is, then yes... by all means... clean up the adverts. They're irrelevant to everything.

So what do you guys even get out of this forum anymore?
Religion & Politics « General Discussion 7/03/10 1:03:13 PM
I think game forums should be moderated, since it's the point of the site and you really need to have at least a modicum of order. As for politics & religion, no. It should be left unmoderated or ditched. Political forums get so volitile and nasty, that moderators would spend all their time dealing with it and it's not this site's primary function. Most of the game boards I've visited that have even an iota of credibility, have either no politics forum or an unmoderated one. It's my opinion that people should fend for themselves when it comes to politics. People who can't handle opinions contrary to their own or personal abuse by other posters, should avoid this sort of thing. I go to one serious political forum that's just about politics which has very light moderation, and one serious gaming forum where I avoid the politics section entirely. I'm in guilds with those people - I'd just rather not know if their politics suck! :p
As for xpowderx, I don't believe anything he posts is an actual opinion of his own. I think he now just uses the account to get reactions from people. Since he's given up his uncredited cut and paste behaviour (I think he has), he doesn't seem to be able to string words together to make coherent posts anyway. He should definitely consider taking up plagiarism again. At least then he sounded as if he had two brain cells to rub together, regardless of how vile what he stole might have been. I don't think he'll hurt anyone because I don't think that even the people who respond to him actually take him seriously. |

It doesn't bother me. I find the "lol" before and after every sentence or posting in silly colours much more annoying, and that doesn't even bother me much. If something is so badly written that I can't understand it, I skip it. I don't really understand why people let grammar and spelling distract them when the read forums. If I can understand a post and it's interesting, I figure I'm already ahead of the game. I would be a wreck if became annoyed and felt compelled to correct every poorly written post, especially on the internet where a lot of people are basically learning English on the fly. |

Is Israel's naval blockade of Gaza legal?
Religion & Politics « General Discussion 6/03/10 7:19:40 PM
They aren't terrorists, they're activists. There's sort of a big difference. There were politicians aboard. A Nobel peace laureate. An American was killed. At least thirty one Brits were onboard including a Scottish journo. A professional diver from Greece. An 80 year old American film producer. Yeah, they really sound like a bunch of dangerous terrorists. Israel even knew they were coming. As much as those people might have intentionally put themselves at risk of a dangerous confrontation, Israel over-reacted to the point of idiocy.
And two people were killed by "warning shots" before anyone even boarded the boat. Some warning shots! I might try and whack a soldier with a stick after that, too. |

A friend of mine at university had his out. I think he was about 25 or so. He had a rough time of it. It was really painful. Once it started scabbing, his breath was just atrocious. He was very self concious about it. It took him a good three weeks to recover. He says he wouldn't do it again knowing what he knows now, but you probably don't always have that option. |
