Best MMORPG able to be played with (don't laugh) dial-up?

However, I live in a rather remote location, it is literally impossible to have cable/dsl out here. Also, I am aware that I could get a satellite connection, and if I ever run across a deal where they'll do the installation for free, or for considerably less than it normally costs, I'll definitely get it. I'm just not a proponent of paying $400-700 dollars to have some guys come install a dish. So, thanks, but no thanks on the advice. If people like you would worry about being more constructive (or not posting at all), it would surely help keep the count of needless posts down. |

Best MMORPG able to be played with (don't laugh) dial-up?

I was hoping some of you could offer your insight for the best MMORPG to play with a dial-up connection? I'm currently playing Last Chaos and it is fun, but I'd love to have a good backup for when it gets too monotonous. I do prefer 3D games and am not interested in playing Runescape (or similar games) or Guild Wars (lost interest). Thanx in advance for any/all suggestions. |

Taken into account all that it might offer, IF Darkfall ever releases it will be THE game to play, imo. |

General: SOE Announces New Spy-Themed MMO
News Discussion « General Discussion 2/09/07 3:07:10 PM
Very interesting indeed. Slowly, but surely the MMO universe is exploring other genres. Whether or not the game turns out to be anything special, it's a step in the right direction.

My vote is Dreamlords! Other than that, Conan & PoTBS are on my 'must play' list. |

I have every positive hope possible about the game, at least at this point. However, confidence in the team(s) that will be in charge of the game and, even worse, the team(s) that control will most likely be handed off to long down the road.....that I'm not so sure of. I just hope the company is open minded enough to learn from their and other companie's mistakes. |

I've read a bit about the game and taken a mild interest in pursuing it, but I would really like to get some opinions from people that actually play the game before devoting any actual time to it. From what I've seen/read it seems like a decent enough game. Questions are pretty much the same as they usually are for these kinds of games:

95.5% of your poll (at time of this post) says it all! GW!

I think a bit differently of it. To date, the current UO still holds a very large share of player subscriptions. It is not #1, but it is still giving the new games a run for it, subscription-wise. With all those hundreds of thousands of people who still play, there is more than enough there alone to consider a new UO. Now, think of the other hundreds of thousands who over the past nine or so years either 1) left for more up-to-date games 2) left because they feel one of (the many) major updates they did to the game didn't agree with them or 3) simply got tired of a UO where everyone owns everything and insurance makes it too easy to keep precious items and pretty much puts thieving (an entire class) out of business. There are MANY people who would, at the very least, be more than happy to use a trial subscription to give the new UO a shot. I honestly believe if they kept key things and obliterated the things that were heavily controversial from their release, they could do a truly great thing. I don't know anyone who didn't enjoy playing UO for the first 2-4 years of it. I know that some of the newer things such as some new areas, insurance, elves and others were not widely accepted or enjoyed on a mass scale. Basically to sum up my opinion, I would say this: Base it on early UO to start. Keep some of the mounts. Keep PVP as it used to be (not sure how it currently is). Forget the new areas. Ultimately, take us back to the time when UO was a complete experience and new updates didn't hinder any classes or skills whatsoever. Make it balanced again. Give it a complete visual overhaul with a sophisticated 3D engine. In closing I'd like to say, I've played many MMOs and receieved the most "complete gameplay" from Ultima Online. I feel very strongly that if and only if they brought the game back and restored its original luster with an up-to-date engine it would continue to offer enjoyable gameplay for millions of people for at least the next 4-7 years. |

I quit UO for good (I thought) around four or so years ago. For a short while after that I played some of those 'other' shards. *cough* Lately, I've been thinking (and thinking and thinking) of playing official UO again. I know it's changed and God knows I hate insurance, Anyway, LONG LIVE UO! At least until they day they give it a comlete engine overhaul and get rid of some of the annoying newer changes. On that note, long live hope! |

General: Editorial: What's Next for EA Mythic?
News Discussion « General Discussion 10/12/06 1:14:16 PM
I have to say, I would be most happy with either a new or updated space mmo or a UO 2 type game. I most definitely agree that EvE needs competition and we need MORE mmo diversity! A company churning out a high-end, well thought-out and put together space exploration/combat (pvp & some AI)/trading mmo would most likely end up with a helluva hit on their hands. Especially if they went a step further and included FPS PVPing when one was on one of the many planets or on a space station (or even in a colony/city/etc.). I mean, who doesn't love exploring deep space, taking out other players' ships, starting a space-bar fight and/or smuggling supplies to warring planets? Alternately, it's obvious the majority of mmo fans are still interested in fantasy games (hence the majority of mmo titles being fantasy), although as time goes on this continues to change. On that note, UO 2! I know there are mixed feelings about it and all. However, if they did go for a full 3D engine it could be very very enjoyable. If they would do that and, at the same time, bring some actual skill-based PVP to a 3D engine, while keeping the original ideas/concepts intact, I believe many a UO veteran and those yet to discover the world of Brittania would have even more years to come of kickass gaming! I admittedly long for the day to be chopping wood in a mist-covered forest, possibly outside Yew, when a testosterone-filled PKer rushes up on his nightmare and initiates PVP with me, without my consent. Or to wake up earlier (or stay up later) than I need to just to be one of hundreds of people trying to snatch a rare to add to my ever-growing collection! Long live potted plants and fruit baskets! |

My good old standby is Ultima Online. I played that thing for over nine years and although I haven't played regularly in a long time, it always feels like 'home' when I go back to it. So many memories made long ago . . . *daydreams* |
