It's times like these I wish I was a multi-millionaire. I'd buy stocks until I had controlling interest, do a hostile takeover, and shut it down. |

Are you people looking forward to getting screwed? Are you gluttons for punishment? This is why idiot devs get to stay in business. They just shut down and start a new company and the lemmings follow right behind. |

Plus it was Max Schaefer who paid the laid off employees one month salary when they were pink slipped. He didn't have to do that since FSS was incorporated, meaning no one could come after the personal assests of the owners. I want to see what Runic Games comes up with, but with a more critical eye.
Being incorporated protected them from investors and customers. It did not, however, protect them from the Department of Labor or from employees. THAT is why money was given to those employees when they were pink-slipped, not because it was the right thing to do. Once again, Flagship was covering it ass, nothing more. |

Laura was the only CM here that I ever honestly felt like talking to past the bans and complaints. She was personable, and approachable with anything. And somehow she was able to see past the asshole I normally present to the forums, and talk to me as an equal in gaming and in general, never "looking down" at me from her staff pedestal. We had many communications through PM, chat, and on the boards; from discussions of bannings/warnings I received ( God bless her for being able to find logic in some of my tirades ) to just good ol' banter about whatever games we were playing. Including convincing me that a daffodil-picking dwarf by the name of Sir Ladyflower Ironforge was just as viable and valid as any traditional axe-wielding dwarf. I cannot, unfortunately, have the audacity to call her my friend as our relations never reached that personal of a level; also, I would not tarnish her image by claiming her to be friends with an ol' sourpuss such as myself without her being here and able to defend herself against such an atrocious accusation. But honestly, I wish we had reached that level known as friendship; for there would have been no higher honor that I could think of. May she find a golden gaming table in Heaven so that she may continue to enjoy her passion unabated. Rest in peace, Laura.
Jon, Very nice memorial, Jon. Being a close friend of Laura undoubtedly made the task harder on you than normal perhaps, but you pulled it off smashingly. Kudos to you. |

Anybody ever thinks of asking me to fight a mob in a game for 18+ hours, there better be a substantial real life paycheck involved. |

Well, after dumping all the suckers who bought Hellgate in the wind, the idiots did exactly what I figured they would do: http://www.gamespot.com/news/6195738.html?tag=result;title;0 Flagship castaways form RunicHellgate's Seattle studio alums and ex-Mythos devs Travis Baldree and Max Schaefer found new shop focused on action MMOGs. During this year's E3 Media & Business Summit word was widespread that Flagship Studios had shut down. After days of silence, the Hellgate: London studio confirmed that it had indeed given "most employees" the pink slip, but would remain extant as a company. Now comes word that some of Flagship's castaways have landed a new gig. Over the weekend, several members of the studio's Seattle studio announced they had formed an independent studio, Runic Games. Heading up the studio will be Travis Baldree, director of the forthcoming free online RPG Mythos, and Max Schaefer, a founding member of Flagship and Diablo creator Blizzard North. In a brief statement posted on the studio's bare-bones Web site, Runic Games' founders announced they "intend to continue to use their expertise in the Action-RPG MMO genre to create the best games in this market." They also promised "announcements about forthcoming projects will be made in the coming days."
So now, they'll be suckering a new group of players to pay for their next bullshit. And that part I outlined in green just shows how truly full of shit these guys are. |

Well, that's the risk they run taking 7 years to make a game while having all of their features open to exploitation by other companies. If Mortal Online, or any other game, comes out with the same or more features touted by Darkfall before Darkfall hits the streets, Darkfall is dead in the water. But, since I sincerely doubt Darkfall will ever release within the next 10 years, I'd say they might as well give up now, because they WILL be beaten to the punch. |

When AoC completely tanks, it will take AO, and Funcom as a whole, with it. There is a reason they've stopped talking about the new engine: it ain't gonna happen. |

The problem is the most popular representation if made into a game would be "Cowboys and Indians". Considering how ridiculously politically correct society is now, do you think an honest representation could be done? Indians would be suing because they were depicted scalping soldiers, smoking peyote (ah, drug use, there's a mature rating now ), raping settlers wives, getting drunk off 'fire water", etc. ( which would all be factual representations of activities during that time ). The white people would all be suing the devs for depicting them as slave runners, "savage" hunters, taking Indian land, raping and pillaging Indian settlements/camps, spreading disease through blankets in an effort to commit genocide, etc. ( which would all be factual representations of activities during that time ). 99% of all the things which would make a game based on the Native American culture interesting to gamers, and especially mmorpg gamers, would be forbidden due to overbearing censors, idiotic useless parents who want someone else to be responsible for their children, historical "revisionists", and political flunkies. |

The doc said I had "shocked ( don't know if that's any better descriptively ) the nerve. She said it basically sends the nerve into a frenzy, constantly sending out pain signals but gradually decreasing in severity until the pain finally goes away. From what she said, a herniated disc means that the spongy material between the discs and spinal cord is pushed out, like jelly when you squeeze a donut. The brace is supposed to keep my neck stable and relieve the pressure while the material that was squeezed out is replaced. But I'll know more after I get the full exam Wednesday. Possible spinal injury is what scares me the most about this, but from what the doc said from the x-rays I don't appear to be in any immediate danger as long as I follow insructions. But hey, thanks for the scare. |
