IMO, SWG was never good. They ruined EQ. EQ2 was a huge flop. I fail to see where they have improved Vanguard. Please, tell me what good SoE brings to this genre?

No, just because they are publishing some upcoming games that have potential doesn't mean a thing.

You just gotten better at the art of Hyperbole +100

While Gates of discord sparked EQ1's decline it was inevitable anyway . Remember the next generation of games L2, COH, WOW and even SOE's own EQII were just over the horizon.  The old girls decline was inevitable.

Oh and about EQII being a huge flop that's just you're wishfull thinking old chap. Regardless of  if you like it or not just like WOW, EQII isn't going anywhere or a while.

Crazy Kids.

*Sigh* ok now we're going to play the pretty graphics vs AI card game now..

Nah..we want them both and there's absolutely no reason we should have to choose between the two.  Besides the advanced AI option isn't available anyway.

While the thread's title implies a consensus agreement where none exists I'll dance.

1) EQ1 pre GOD (PVE)

2) DAOC  (RVR)

It's just a little hard to believe that people are actually recommending this game to others.  There are many reasons I don't like it but I won't list them here since it'll become a wall of text, but I just want to know if those people recommending EQ2 have played other mmorpg's?  Other than being in a good guild of friends I don't see any reasons to recommend this game to anyone.  So have you EQ2 players tried any other games, and which ones?

Do tell what title(s) you'd recommend instead..Oh and please something other than the usual suspects.

While not the best in any one area, In a sea of mediocrity EQII is lacking the least . While not a ringing endorsement i'd certainly recommend the trial.

MMORPG.com does not like VG.  Review = 6.9

It all makes sense guys... don't worry

Bet you wouldn't have said that if the numbers were the other way around!

I certainly would have as both are better than 6.9 but neither deserve an 8.5 either.

After playing them both I agree LOTRO is certainly the better of the two but not that much better...

Hmm good topic.

I've felt the least cookie cutter in CoX &  MxO. Honerable mentions also to EVE, SWG & EQII.

There's little debate that the PS3 is technically better than the XBOX 360.

The real question is if it's $200 to $300 dollars better and that answer is a resounding no. As we saw with he previous console generation The XBOX was superior to the PS2 in every category except the one that matters most.

Game Quality.

Isn't it funny how life turns the tables on ya?

Todays linear, hold you're hand, candy land gameplay is easy enough already.

At it's core death penalties are punishment for stupidity & lack of planning/ strategy. You wanna go all Leroy Jenkins into a room full of  mobs  fine but it's gonna cost you and or you're group / raid valuable playing time.

Granted there are exceptions like really difficult raid encounters but even those more often or not can be overcome with proper execution. How many times after dying have you said to yourself "Damn that was stupid I should have known better."

We all have.

In the anonymous, virtual MMO world death penalties are the single best way of hold one accountable to a group. They also serve as a gage to playing ability or how well someones paying attention. If someones constantly dying or causing  group /raid wipes their either not too bright or their ability is suspect.

Either way you're better off without them.

With the advent of the new invention system the above quote describes the CoX experience to the tee. You could spend you're entire CoX experience never touching, buying or creating special enhancement and you wouldn't be gimmped at all.

You would however be missing out on allot...I spent time looking over the new IO sets and come to this conclusion. The beauty of  the IO's are they're more about eliminating weaknesses then being uber.

While not a full recovery from the I5 / ED debacle, Cryptic has done a good job adding more replay value to CoX.

/Agree

CoX is the only title I curently pay for. Any well made title that allows you to log in and play for an hour and actually see progress is golden.

I also am enjoying Grenado Espada as well. I do like fast paced action and this one fits the bill. Sadly though, other than Aion & Spellborne nothing grabs me. Perhaps AOC will surprise though.

There will be no true 3rd generation MMO until someone, anyone really takes AI seriously. Until that day it's all more of the same in a prettier package. I've remember smarter AI in EQI's POP raid content than 80% of what's out atm.

1) Think of grouping with you're buds and every so often you get a glimpse of something following you. Next thing you know Bam out of the trees an ambush!!

2) Imagine trading some goods in town when all of a sudden arrows come flying out of nowhere taking down injuring you're friends and NPC's. That's right the Mobs are raiding YOU.

3) Imagine Orcs ore some other group putting a bounty on you're head for camping them. How would it feel having their most elite  tracking you down putting you're party in even greater danger. Imagine choosing group mates based on how badly the Mobs hate them.

That my friends (among other things) is my idea of true third generation fun.

Gooney,  While in theory these are good points sadly I must tell you from experience.

By the time a title reaches Beta stage it's usually too late for wholesale changes for finacial reasons. In fact for better or worse most fundamental changes to MMO's happen post release like SWG, CoX, EQII. The results of those changes have been mixed at best.

Usually you're core base has been established by the time you reach beta stages. It's usually a matter playability & execution that decides how many new fans you draw in. In other words you usually sink or swim by the time beta arrives.

Truthfully, how often have you actually been pleasently surprised enough to change you're opinion about a title you had no intrest in?

Truth is unless you've an established IP,  you're using an original vision plus legacy & focus group data as a meter.  As we've seen in the past even that doesn't assure you'll make it.

53) Fans of the genre in general are not allowed. A love or hate opinion of all MMO's is prerequisite including but not limited to the following titles. (UO, EQ1, WOW, EVE, SWG, VG & LOTRO.)

54) All posts must be based on kneejerk reactions & steeped in hyperbole for maximum effect.

55) The use of logic, reasoning  and sevility are strictly forbidden, this law shall be vigorusly enforced.

56) Any MMO not allowing 24 hour max leveling is herby deemed an Asian Grinder...(even if it wasn't created Asia.)

They must think white people go home at the end of the day and relax on their throne after a hard day of whipping black people.

You think far too highly of yourself mate.

The fact that you even bothered to post such ignorant drivel proves you've been watching far too much TV.

l actually feel sorry for you.

I think the OP's original post was quite clear and it wasn't until it was twisted and hijacked that things ran a foul.

Sadly one of the few negatives of the internet is it serves as one of the last bastions of ignorance & stupidity without fear of conseqence.

Now...I too appreciate the fact games like Vanguard, Guild Wars, CoX etc offer diversity as I believe more choices are always good thing. but make no mistake I also subscribe to keeping with a title's lore. Translation, I don't want to see people of color in a title just for the sake of doing so.

However  we can clearly see that so vigorous a defense of  Tolkien's lore is a mere smoke screen for more dubious intentions.

Nevertheless It boils down to this..

As this genre grows we're going to see a myriad of titles that will shift  from the fantasy realm. What that means to you the consumer is you'll be able to experience more cultures and backgrounds.  Trust me the more you learn about people it helps you to appreciate our differences and that's a good thing.

Now...If you're one of those who harbor Ill will towards a particular race or ethnicity than perhaps MMO's really aren't for you.  Online games are NOT safe havens for childish bigotries.

*Sheesh*

So in games i have to say NO! to black Vikings, Germans ect.

You really need to some other higher power mate and work on that venom.

If you think for one minute anyones even cares about trying to force anything on you you're both twisted and missinformed.

Good grief grow up.

Look at the trouble Islam is causing and tell me they aren't trying to force their twisted relgion on the rest of us.

Good grief grow up, the OP just gave kudos to VG for having diverse selection of races. Ah but as so often the case the post get's highjacked into some rambling dietribe.

stop comparing wow to eq, they are equally bad.
Find a better game to compare wow to (it shouldn't be hard to do).
Listening to eq players brag about wow's "leetness" is like listening to a virgin brag about how good his sex life is.
Play a real game then talk.
What game would this be?
DAOC.

"It [EQ] was only time-consuming to the max, that's it. "
Go back and play more EQ takes more skill more thought,,, still if you look at daoc it takes even more, more so when you look at what skill does for you best place to example this is in PVP.
Ask the question what do i have to do ... how much to my actions / timing/ choices affect the outcome of the battle. NO game beats DAOC in this aspect, you can totally own or be owned just based on the target you pick or your other actions during a fight. People who have played many mmos (IE wow) do not understand this much , because, personaly choice has little effect of fighting outcomes... as equip has a larger impact then player skill.

In regards to PVP or RVR you would be correct, DAOC was head and shoulders above EQI.  To be honest PVP in EQ always felt like an afterthought.

However... when talking about how you're actions effected battle in a PVE setting EQI surpassed DAOC easily.
