The fact is WAR looks like WOW.

You can come up with excuses all day long, but it doesn't change anything.

 /Agree.

Honestly I've no idea why people are starting these WOW apologist posts  anyways? All this drivel about WOW having deeper skill than XXX is not only false but really who bloody cares?

WOW is a fun starter MMO which can be played on a toaster which is exactly what Blizz meant it to be. The kid next door doesn't care if xxx title looks like whatever as long as it's fun.

Besides Blizz didn't create WOW to be the end all be all of MMOS anyway. They created it to get every video game playing teen you know to at least try MMO's.

Mission accomplished.

A and CoS are, I think, not going to be broad enough or deep enough.  Nor do they have the necessary IP to be a wide draw outside the mainstream.

AoC is being done by Funcom, who have proved year after year that they are unable to put out, or fix, their badly flawed AO product.

So, that leaves WAR.  Being produced by Mythic, who made the very (for the time) successfull Dark Age of Camelot.  At the time, EQ1 had ~450k subscribers, and I belive DAoC achieved (before WoW), something on the order of  ~250k to ~300k subscribers.  Some of those were taken from EQ1, and some were new.  But, DAoC was the second only to EQ1 MMORPG until WoW took over.

So, I vote for WAR

Good IP
May bring in new MMORPG players from Miniatures WAR community
Known good company developing
Vast experience in PvP and PvE environments

With all the hype surounding them I'd bet surprised if both WAR and AOC didn't garner more subscribers. However  the OP asked what upcoming MMORPG would be the best... Not the most popular, but best.

Experience in former titles doesn't guarantee anything as there are plenty of examples on this site that prove that.

My money goes to TCOS or AION as I tend to like the talented underdog.

Ding..Ding..Ding...I think we have a winner.

I'm 37 as well so old T & Kirk bring that ole skool warmth to my heart.. Even if I wern't an MMO player I'd feel better if cats I grew up watching (MR. T & Captin Kirk) endorse a title especially with the sicko's on the net these days. It might not solidify my decision to let them play it but i'd at least concider it.

As I recall post A team era Mr T was always preaching stay in school and love yo mama fool!!

Summary: Those commercials aren't for you kiddies, their for you're parents.

Excellent marketing Blizz...

QFT ..

Perfect World, Granado Espada, RF Online and Guild Wars especially are as good if not better than 90% of these vaulted P2P titles. Tell me..where is this vaulted P2P parallel universe you speak of?

Cause I can't find it..

Hyperbole aside there is a point to be found here, I just didn't find VG fun...at all.

While VG has some of the most beautiful environments ever seen in an MMO it lacked soul. Conversely WOW  is simplistic and looks like it was made in 2002 however levels 0-59 were some of the most fun I've had in an MMO to date.

Presentation & flash aside, above all a title has to be fun. For instance..long boat rides got old with pre Luclin EQ1. What numb skull thought bringing that little diddy back would be a good idea?

Oh goodie we get to travel the beautiful ocean.....again.....for 15-20 minutes.

That's what I mean, some companies focus too much on bells, whistles and how you should play their game they loose sight of why we play games at all.

Fun..

There are definate playstyle differences however one thing to look at is NCSoft and SOE parent companies are both Asian. There are only a handful of "true" or "pure" western games. The money for the risk of making games like Tabula Rasa and EQII did not originate strickly from the west.

Indeed and I imagine in the next 3-5 years this won't even be an issue at all. People forget MMO's are still relatively new hence the current stagnation or "growing pains". Not to mention games like Aion are on track to meld the best of both worlds.

The West's substance and polish combined with the East's Style & grace are closer than we think and In the end it's the MMO player who benefits.

For there to be a quote "winner" one has to be head and shoulders above the other and this is clearly not the case. As it stands today both Eastern and Western styles have holes. Holes that can only be filled by one learning from the other.

Really...

While WOW is a good game it offers nothing that can't be found in EVE, EQII, FFXI or L2.

Fact is no MMO currently on the market offers anything that really separates it from the pack. At best you're picking games based on personal preference and at worst the lesser evil. It's no coincidence we're hearing the growing discontent among players and vets especially.

For instance...

My current favorites are CoX, L2 & PW.  Now think about it for a minute..none of  my favs offer anything that can't be found in EQII, WOW, EVE or LOTRO. Yep the same holds true for you're favorites as well because in the current landscape it's more about presentation & packaging than anything.

So people trumpeting any one title as the end all be all these days is silly at best. When someone drops a title with true advancements in AI, battle mechanics, armor & skill customization plus audio to match those graphics then bring out the trumpets.

I don't find it coincidence that games built with both PVE & PVP in mind useually have tighter gameplay mechanics, fleshed out skills, AI and balance.

Remember there's no greater opponent than another thinking human being..

I wouldn't worry about the "hardcore" crowd at this point.  Right now, almost the ENTIRE freakin genre is aiming for the unltra-casual crowd, and, well you can see the results...

Yep, i can (IMO) better games.

*Sigh*

it's like listening to these hardcore Libarals & Conservitives battle it out neither realizing the majority of us think both are silly.

The truth is many of us want something in between. Simply put the majority of us have families and resposibilities so the 4-6 hour grinds of EQI are no longer an option. However make no mistake many aren't satisfied with the current crop of spoonfeed garbage either.

Hopefully a title comes along that provides the challenge of old school titles ( UO, EQI, AC, DAOC) only without the huge time commitments.

Why is WoW so popular? Because it can be run on the most shitty computers you can think of...and even Macs(which should be put in the shitty category). Being able to run a game will almost guarantee sales.

This is such a simple point...yet most MMORPG developers have not grasped it.  To get WOW sub numbers your game has to play well on a sub-standard computer.... my Dell 600 laptop from work with integrated graphics card can play it..... heck, even EVE won't do that....

Designing your game to run well on a $3K rig is not a forumula for financial success....

Not pushing the envolope isn't either..WOW's popularity has whole allot more to do with it being fun than system recs.  Besides if you can afford something less than 4 years old you shouldn't be playing MMO's anyway. That's why they make platform consoles.  Simply put If Vanguard was fun people would play it. If D& L was well made people would be playing it.

There isn't nor will there ever be a WOW killer just like there wasn't an EQI killer or UO before that. The idea that somehow a well made title has to be killed is just plain silly anyway.

Let's see.

Currently Installed: CoX (Heroes & Villians) ,Granado Espada, Perfect World, RF Online & Archlord. Add EQII to the list when Kunark drops.

Recently uninstalled Tabula Rasa (Ok but kinda just there). Also another Beta (NDA) that people are pinning their hopes on....l apologize on the publishers behalf  in advance.

Yea I miss my EQI mates (circa 2000-2004) as well.

While I had the pleasure of working with four of them in RL I still miss the ones onlineas well. Kinda sad when the character of those met states & countries away surpass many  in real life.

RIP Val.

I subscribe to the hybrid theory..

Paladin / Shadow Knight  types you know the Jack of all trades master of none stuff.  Versatility is a must for any game I play MMO or otherwise.

MMO's didn't evolve from cowardly cheap tactics like ganking lowbies and spawn camping but it still goes on.

Hence my only problem with FFA PVP. Sadly this isn't circa 2000 when high levels would hunt down scum lowbee campers and teach them a lesson.  Sadly as long as such cheap tactics are allowed FFA PVP will never prosper.

It's a shame too because no NPC can match the tactics that are required to face a thinking human being.

My vote goes with LOTRO & Vanguard.

Granted  WOW did an excellent job creating a mostly seamless world. However both LOTRO & Vanguard manage to do it while pushing pretty poly's around.

With that criteria You've still a few choices with Perfect World & Guild Wars being the most obvious.

Now if you're a bit more flexable might i also suggest RF Online and Sword of the New World.

While RF Online does have  Sci-Fi elements that really depends on the faction you play. The Cora are pretty much standard fantasy fare.  Now Sword of the new world is a Baroque era (17th Century) MMO but again has plenty of fantasy elements.

This is easily the best it's ever been for F2P titles. Many of which at least rival the current crop of P2P leaders. Yea..yea..I know that's damming with faint prase.

I wouldn't say LOTRO is in steep decline however I agree smoothness of launch doesn't net you brownie point's. For Pete's sake that's the bare minumum we should expect.

Also since when did you get an immunity pass for an MMO's duration because of a smooth launch?

Aside from AI, & graphics 90% of what you'd need  to make the ultimate MMO already exists with the four masters of this genre. The first publisher to take the key elements of each and combine them will have a pot of gold on His/Her hands.

1) UO

2) EQI

3) AC

4) DAOC.
